2017 Chevy Cruze TD 6-Speed - Diesel Powered Daily Driver

  • With diesel options dwindling in the US, Chevrolet looks to swoop up buyers looking to trade in their TDI Volkswagens with the 2017 Cruze TD. With up to 52 MPG, a standard 6-speed manual or 9-speed automatic, and a smooth comfortable ride, this new efficient member of the Cruze family should be a solid choice for the anti-hybrid buyer.

Great to see that this generation Cruze TD has a spare tire and manual.

  • @DriveAndBeDriven

Once again, neat review. The Cruze TD seems like a pretty solid alternative for those who aren't looking for a hybrid, but need a bit more efficiency out of a traditional gasoline vehicle.
Overall, I believe this was a pretty smart "card" for Chevy to play. This new engine choice - available in the Cruze - should bring even more consumers into Chevrolet dealers. Also, that saddle brown interior color combo looks quite "upscale".
From one car enthusiast to another, keep up the great work! 👍🏽

It just sucks that Chevy won't make the Watts-Link suspension standard across the Cruze lineup - it would give them an absolute advantage over cars like Forte, Elantra, and Corolla

You won't forget that it's a diesel when you open up the fuel hatch :) It's hard to miss the green cap with "diesel" printed on it and the blue DEF cap right beside it.
Anyway, I still own a 2017 Cruze diesel I bought new, and I'm still loving it. It's definitely nice for long trips, a real money-saver. It has also been pretty reliable. I've had problems with it not wanting to start in very cold temperatures, though this may have been a fuel issue or due to not driving it enough to charge the battery sufficiently, and I'm talking temps well below zero as well.

I have a manual gasoline Cruze. I think this may be the same trans., looks the same shifting. Now that mine is broken in, it's a lot better than when it was new. If the experience I had with my old Sentra holds, then changing the fluid to Amsoil will better the shifting quality even more. It's okay. Not a sports car, but very good for a daily driver.
The thing this Diesel may do better than the gasoline cars made in the emissions era is, quickly spin the RPMs down between shifts for smooth and fast upshifts.

The statistics are that manuals don't sell. While this might be true to some extent, manufacturers are simultaneously giving fewer and fewer options to potential manual buyers.
Diesel gets better FUEL mileage because it's engines require a higher compression ratio. Also, diesel is more energy dense than gasoline.

This doesn't compare to a Mercedes but you must drive a car with Mercedes new 2 litre diesel. That thing is astonishing in how quiet and smooth it is especially in the new E Class (E220d). It is smoother and quieter than quite a lot of petrol cars you'd call quiet. And it really goes. They just mastered the efficiency of that engine and even in the big E Class, it uses tiny amount of fuel. A friend of mine averaged an astonishing 4.2 litres per hundred kilometers with 4 passengers and luggage on a long trip (that's about 56 US miles per gallon!). I love the E220d. That gives a range of about 1500kms (or 930 miles!!) on a tank of fuel. It is a wonderful thing. Diesel cars really are just special. Until an electric car can achieve this kind of range in that kind of car and be charged in 5 minutes, then bring it. But diesel will have to just live on. It is awesome. And there is never a wierd exhaust smell or anything. Oh and the torque is just wonderful.

    • @97I30T

KentB27 I don't know why they don't. With the Adblue after treatment solution, it is very clean. I also suspect that if they do offer a diesel in the US it'll be the 3 litre V6 diesel (E350d). The US seems to prefer larger engines in larger cars and quicker 0 to 60 times even though the 2 litre is more than anyone will ever need. They also have a new inline 6 cylinder diesel (to be named the 400d) that can do 0 to 60 in 5.2 seconds while still only using very little diesel which will probably replace the 350d engine. Anyway. I enjoy modern diesel cars for their efficiency, range, towing capability and torque. I hope they stick around.

Mercedes did not receive approval for their diesels in the U.S. from the EPA. The U.S. EPA is really cracking down on diesels as a result of the VW scandal, so much so that it's making diesels near impossible to receive approval. A petrol engine is very easy to approve here. A diesel is not. Only the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van is available with a diesel, and even then, the EPA granted an exemption for Mercedes to sell that here. Their passenger cars, not at all, at least for the 2017 model year.

Not only does a TD Cruze owner has to fork out the extra money for the diesel (the hatchback TD is over $31,000.00). But he must also factor in the DEF fluid cost consumption per mile into the 52 MPG to get the true cost per mile (like the big rigs). The cheapest that I have found DEF is $5.79/gallon at NAPA. Diesel fuel cost per gallon is up there with the high octane gasoline (check it out).
Diesel Emission system reliability over time is another factor to be considered. Newer Class 8 trucks have a lot of, "REGEN" problems that derate the engine power and mileage when the computer sees an emissions fault.
Also, the TD Cruze engine uses a timing BELT. Not a timing CHAIN. Timing belts have gone the way of the dinosaur in earlier gas 4 bangers and should NEVER be used on a diesel where it not only drives the cam shaft, but also the high pressure common rail fuel injection pump. For do-it-yourselfers, try changing the black tar crankcase oil that has to be done more frequently in a diesel, than a gas engine due to the soot. I'll stop there.

    • @bmw803
      @bmw803 6 лет назад

That's from an American perspective. You cross in to Canada and diesel is lower than regular gas. I have the 2017 TDI and I paid 22,500 for the sedan. DEF is not expensive. I bought 2 jugs ( 2.5 Gallons each ) and 1 jug can last between 4 and 5,000 miles. It doesn't use much.

cgrscott the 5.7 Diesel was not a gas conversion. It was designed as a diesel from the beginning. The majority of its reliability issues were due to, firstly a lack of a water separator, secondly a quick release into the market so mechanics weren’t able to be trained properly how to maintain it, and thirdly people were not used to diesel engines so they would more than often put gas in them or not understand how to use the glow plugs.

People who cannot remember what type of fuel their vehicle requires HAVE NO BUSINESS DRIVING. All that electronic braking and lane change assist and backup camera crap is also super annoying.
