  • Volkswagen no longer offers diesels, Chevy steps in to fill the void. The diesel Cruze is very efficient with the E.P.A. rating it at up to 48 miles per gallon. Tom Voelk checks to see whether that’s true. And you thought that diesel was dead in the US…

    I leased my 2 daughters each 2017 gas versions of the Cruze. Very good handling, quiet for the class, solid, great fuel economy and after a short time you won't notice the stop start system. It is very smooth. A seriously underrated car often overlooked by those blindly following the herd to a Toyota or Honda dealership.

    I insist, the evil twin its one of the best parts of this videos, it gives your professional and serious reviews a dash of style and fun, pretty much like the late 90s Top Gear, seriousness overall but with that smash of a joke, amazing review as always, however how good is the suspension, considering Washington every rain season sinks in more potholes than fish in the sea...

    • @VPoje
      @VPoje 6 лет назад +5

      Depending on conditions, at 75 mph im between 47 and 71 mpg. It's hard to have perfect conditions, but i often get over 50 mpg. On a trip i did last year of 256 miles of mixed roads, but 80% was highway, i finished with an average of 54 mpg. When i cameback, i was in a rainstorm, my average droped to 45 mpg.

      Driven Car Reviews my 2017 gas model gets 46mpg Highway. The diesel is supposedly far better. Btw, the Cruze Premier (gas only) that I have has a different suspension than the other ones and outhandles the civic by a lot. It carves corners like a wrx.

    I love my Volt. Loved my Bolt EV. The Volt rear seats are too small and cramped with no passenger slide through. The Bolt was too limited in the winter and didn’t have enough highway chargers... the Cruze diesel seems to be a good solution and is simply limited by the prices of ad blue and diesel fuel.

      I bought mine for $22,500, but it's the sedan version. Hatch is nice, but like he mentioned, 4K extra includes the TDI engine plus all the other features, such as leather seats, upgraded infotainment system, heated wheel, etc. So it's not like it's 4K just for the Diesel engine. Otherwise it's definitely not worth it. I get close to 60 MPG on highway providing it's not going up a hill. On a flat surface, it's close to 60 MPG in real time.

    It’s way better to underrate a vehicle’s fuel efficiency than overrate it, even if both are wrong. Ford is learning that with the ecoboost engines. But it definitely should be rated at 50 mpg highway for the auto as well.

    It goes to show how much you really know about these cars. You can override the auto stop by putting the shifter into L mode and shifting all the gears. Even in that mode it runs as an automatic. As an owner of the 2017 gasoline model hatchback I can tell you it corners like it's on rails. So your perception comparing it to the Honda Civic is wrong.

    I really want to buy this Cruze deisel hatchback, but 30k is absurd. The main reason why I won't buy one is the price is stupid high. Comparable Civic hatchback is 6k less. C'mon GM, lower the price,. We love hatchbacks, Ford stopping production of all theirs, you could take the market , just drop the price a bit more. Great review! As usual. Always a quality review. Hello from Bothell!

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  6 лет назад +1

      Ah, local guy! I highly suggest talking to a Chevy dealer about the price. GM tends to set MSRP high and then discount deeply.

    • @BoopSnoot
      @BoopSnoot 6 лет назад +1

      Ami vs Jap cars have always been that way. They overinflate the MSRP to make people feel like they are getting a super deal. Contrast that with say a Subaru dealership where you're going to pay maybe $300 under MSRP and no wiggle room. The craziest I've seen are Dodge trucks. Getting $10K off sticker is the norm.

  • @ducfandan1117
    @ducfandan1117 6 лет назад +1

    Really incomplete on the hybrid vs diesel blurb. The hybrid system (in general) is better in city situations where start/stop happens frequently... this is where electric energy recovery works well. The Cruze is going to be superior for highway drives. More oomph for passing, and operating a diesel steady-state for longer time intervals is where that thermodynamic cycle really shines, while a hybrid is just lugging around a bunch of dead weight under those circumstances.
    So, honest pros/cons given... I wouldn’t be caught dead in a Prius. The anti-enthusiast car. At least GM offers me the choice of a manual in the Cruze TD, while for hybrids the Volt is a vastly better looking car (in addition to being more dynamic in handling, and more user-engaging in energy management), and for EVs the Bolt (while ugly) has very good specifications and performance.

    • @navigator1383
      @navigator1383 5 лет назад

      hybrid will need a new expensive battery eventually (possibly costing more than the value of the car) . Diesel will not.

    Wish this was the VW 2L turbo diesel. This 1.6L by GM is underpowered in this application. Not surprised as GM seems to just show up to the party and not really try to bring anything. Had potential though. The price tag is way too much.

    • @bmw803
      @bmw803 5 лет назад +2

      The price tag is in deed a bit high for the hatch. But even if it's a 1.6, it's not underpowered. It delivers quite some power for the size of this engine. But, since it's a daily commuter car and not a race car, I don't give a fuck if I save 1.5 seconds to get to 60. It's not meant to race others and to compete in a drag race.

    I would very much like to replace my VW diesel wagon 6speed with the Chevy Cruze Hatchback diesel 6speed. But I can't get test drive!! I live in Northern NH 7 ½ miles from the Canadian boarder. My Chevy dealer (2 miles away) says the closest 6speed diesel in Maryland. Over 600miles away! Chevy, whats up with that!!
    The automatic transmission has the auto-stop-start system, for me that's a deal killer. It wasn't working for him because he was in “L”
    I like driving, I want to control my car, I pick the gear, not some random program changing gears when it wants to.
    Hooray,,climate control is not automatic! Again I like driving too much to even let some program guess at what temperature I should be at!

    Too bad Chevy is still lagging in the industry. Being the owner of a Hyundai, I beef with the Cruze’s lack of optional non-halogen lights (DRLs don’t count) and their tiresome interior design, which looks classy in some places and childish in others. The GM font is really harshing my mellow, too- the same font in the 2018 Escalade’s gauge cluster is printed on the dash buttons in an ‘87 Century. Once GM makes something with an attractive interior and less sober looks, I’ll start appreciating them for making cars other than the Camaro and Corvette.

    • @wilmotown
      @wilmotown 6 лет назад +1

      Kenneth K ???

    • @wilmotown
      @wilmotown 6 лет назад +1

      Kenneth K Hyundai has more coherent interior design, at least in the current design language of cars like the current Elantra, Accent, Tucson, Kona, etc. The dashboard of the Cruze, like the leather upholstery and the stitching line across the passenger side, looks fantastic, and most of the controls are comfortable to use, but they don’t blend well with the archaic-looking shifter and fisher price center stack of buttons. If you get into an Elantra you’ll notice that the buttons are all incredibly logically laid out, the infotainment system is easy to use without employing a tiresome font or some older-style iOS5-esque icons, and the shifter isn’t too big and ugly or too small and useless, not to mention it fits well design-wise with the rest of the interior. And on LED lights, why would I take on the liability of replacing bulbs, possibly dealing with an error message in the dash or a mangled part, when I could just go to Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Subaru, or VW (Don’t think the Focus or Sentra have the option either) and get a car that has them as an option? True enough, most of those brands don’t sell compacts with LEDs, just HIDs, but the difference between HID and halogen is much larger in my experience than that between HID and LED.

    • @wilmotown
      @wilmotown 6 лет назад +1

      Kenneth K The connectivity features like what? What does the Cruze offer that other cars with similar systems (I don’t mean to keep coming back to the Elantra, but like BlueLink) don’t? I admit my opinion is based on my personal experience, having driven both the Cruze and the Elantra and now owning the Elantra, but it just seems to me that Subaru and VW and Hyundai and even Toyota are putting out more mature interior designs than Chevy. Cruze certainly outdoes the Focus on that front, though, not to mention the equally poor 2017 Sentra. The Cruze isn’t necessarily poorly designed, it just seems like the hallmark of a well-designed center stack is one that you barely have to look at to use (this is where Honda and its 2015ish volume slider fail) and when I drove the Cruze I found the buttons on the back of the steering wheel felt cheap, not to mention the odd rubber-covered thumb controls with almost imperceptible tactile bumps on the front of it, and that the center stack was kind of distractingly designed with lots of different-shaped buttons in their clusters, plus the fact that the screen itself had pretty unintuitive menus and no shortcut buttons. I liked the perhaps more boring, but more intuitive, design of my Hyundai, of the Mazda3, of the Jetta, and the new Impreza. The Cruze’s interior felt like a mild step up from the lower-trim Focus I tried. In my opinion, Hyundai, Subaru and Toyota make better looking center stacks than Chevy. On a less subjective note, Hyundai’s system is much less clunky to use.

    • @wilmotown
      @wilmotown 6 лет назад +1

      Kenneth K I like my 2017 Elantra Limited for many of the same reasons. It was a dealer demo, so it had about 5000 miles on it when I got it, but it’s backed by that 10/100 warranty from the date I bought it that Hyundai buyers love so much. All that means I got a 28k car for about $20k after the dealership gouged me for some fees. Coming from my dad’s 335, which I learned to drive in, it’s slow, but with adaptive cruise and lane keep assist, nothing’s easier to drive in traffic. HIDs are bright, LED running lights look awesome, and it gets 38 or 40 to the gallon if your commute doesn’t involve going over 65 mph, at which point that figure will drop into the low-mid 30s. The nav and radio stuff is incredibly easy to use, there’s plenty of cargo room, and it has enough pickup off the line that I can get ahead of traffic easily. It’s an excellent car that I wholeheartedly recommend, and I see myself definitely buying another Hyundai.
