Does every BMW have to be a knife-edged “Ultimate Driving Machine”? The 640i Gran Turismo is not. Instead, the Bavarians offer up a GT with all day driving comfort and a useful hatchback design. Tom Voelk drives a well-optioned version and asks the question “why not this instead of a base 7 Series”?

About Tom:
Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting. Авто/Мото
Just bring the 5 series wagon already.
Exactly!!!!
One reason why i like this show because of its beautiful shooting location. Feel relaxed while watching the review.
@Ahmad Faisal. It's all done with green screen and CGI. Tom actually lives in Oklahoma. :)
@@stephenhendricks103 hope that Bimmer not CGI'd too :D
Actually, according to the spam I get, the internet seems to think I live in Muskogee.
You, too? I thought it was because I actually DID grow up in Oklahoma and my mother was from Muskogee. :)
It's all the subliminal messages I insert. I need to work on one that makes people want to buy me a Porsche Taycan.
Great review as always, Tom!
Make wagons great again! Great review, and awesome editing with your evil twin!
Tom's reviews deserve a whole looot more views. Seriously.
Shhhh, I'm trying to keep this channel a secret.
Great take- like it better after your review!
Always fun to watch
Only car review channel that actually gets me to smile ... multiple times ... every video. You should copyright the way you shoot these and call it, “schematic for presenting normally dry video content by way of visually compelling editing with witty delivery of various puns and/or jokes.” I’d be perfectly happy to license it from you
Well, as long as you're laughing with me and not at me you can have the license for free leebee1100.
As I’ve made it known on my other comments, trust me when I say I’m laughing at your competition, not you lol
Good stuff TV!!
A great car that you never have to worry about getting stolen.
As always great review Tom. Thank you.
Thanks tj!
That's how you do objective reporting. Love your work Tom.
Hi Tom. I guess i'm going to sound like a broken record, but I love your production standards.
Beautiful area that you live in.
Look forward to your video each week. Please keep them coming.
By the way, don't forget your bro in the back, LOL.
Thanks man. Yikes! I gave the car back without checking...
It’s just absolutely Perfect for me. And I’ll be buying one before this year is out!!!😉
Great review. The best car I ever owned was my 1987 Saab 9000 Turbo hatchback... the market at the time couldn’t understand the concept of a ‘luxury’ hatchback, maybe they were just 30 years ahead of their time 🤔
@che von (sigh) Saab was ahead of its time in many ways. I had three and I curse GM every day for what they did to a great company.
They were.
Yes I had one too and loved it!
Loving the evil twin banter in this piece!
The Audi A7 seems to be the most direct competitor and if the two were side by side I'm not sure I'd even see the BMW. Your reviews are always great but the camera work in this one had an extra splash of awesome in it. Watched it twice just to appreciate the angles, framing, and action shots.
Well, I enjoy the shooting part much more than the on camera part. Cars are as much art as they are engineering. Got to love the visuals.
High on my list of desirable practical cars. I'd love to daily this car.
I am currently driving a 2017 Subaru Outback. Previous 2 vehs 2003.5 Hyundai Santa Fe and 1994 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer.
Lots of people drive wagons and hatchbacks here in Canada. Smaller, more economical cars are sales leaders, albeit not for long given crossovers. I live in an upper-middle class neighbourhood and most of the cars are compacts. Lots being hatchbacks and wagons
now you can do an ET trunk capacity test, LOL!
:)
3:52 "This being..." ??? C'mon Tom! You're much better than that! Otherwise, great review, as always!
0:42 I think BMW prefers the term "sport-back." I like the look and the Audi A5 and A7 carries it well too. As did my 1987 Acura 5 door Integra... but people called it a hatch-back in those days. 😀
Hey Tom!! Love the review like always just so you know, BMW is changing the way Apple CarPlay is billed. Starting on 2019 models CarPlay is a subscription through BMW connected drive. New BMWs with a navigation system will get one year free and then CarPlay will be a yearly subscription
Yeah.... wonder how that's going to go over.
Despise the car; enjoy watching the review!
Tom, again, you're such a diplomat calling this one not only practical but also more "exclusive" 😂
Agreed.
While this seems to be getting no love in the comments, to be honest, in person it's not the "fugly" car people seem to think it is. Far better looking than the 5 Series GT and Crosstour. And again, I think automotive writers live in a different world, we enjoy seeing something different and don't worry about the car as an investment as much as the purchaser might.
@@DrivenCarReviews Hey i'm glad you say that Tom cause I do agree this is somewhat better looking than the 5GT (although that's not saying much). Oh and ironically, I kinda liked the Crosstour!
Anyway, most seem to agree this 6GT is practical... and I must remind one and all that it is NOT practical, for most, to spend $84k as tested on a family car !
I just couldn't make any sense of this 6GT until you Tom, so brilliantly mentioned: it's got Exclusivity 😉
Tom, You are "far better looking" than Woody Allen. #DamnedWithFaintPraise I'll take the 5 Series wagon (on lease) any day.
For those intrigued by the gorgeous scenery in Tom's videos, just know that the Puget Sound is full. No more room. Period. Of course, we'd love to have you visit and spend money. Here's a hint. Plan your trip for January; it's the best time. Really. Just remember to bring your raincoat and umbrella so the natives can identify you as a tourist. :)
Stephen is right. Come here in January if you want the real Seattle. I'm looking forward to 8 months of photographing cars in the rain.
You talked me into moving! ;)
gene978: Tom forgot to mention the expected eruption of Mt. Rainier. Gonna happen any day now.
Away from Seattle?
5 Series Wagon, please!!
Someone screwed up on the production line or at a supplier somewhere. At 0:15 the BMW roundel is crooked. It should be rotated 90 degrees to the left so that "BMW" is aligned with the M letter and also aligned with the air nozzle at the top of the wheel.
Tom, I have to ask you this after watching you & your btrother for so long, how much toilet paper do you have at your house, lol? Do you give toilet paper out as gifts to people? When you do a meet up, you could autograph rolls of toilet paper and just toss them out into the crowd, lol. Anyway, thanks for all the great vids.
I have the normal amount. Really. I would give it away to charity if I didn't just return it to Costco after I was done.
The average housing price in San Francisco peaked at $1.6 million last April, and it's around $1.4 million now. That's 880,000 people in 49 sq miles. In the surrounding Bay Area, it's just under $1 million. For Seattle, it peaked at $840k, and now it's $740k. That's 730,000 people in 84 sq miles. No thanks to those tech workers in both our respective regions.
BTW, it's also very smokey in summer, at least out here on the dry side.....
Tom, as always a great review. Any idea who the target market is for this? I like the design and practicality. Not a wagon guy, but I agree, the ubiquitous nature of sedans and suvs lacks any type of distinction. Thanks
Hey, I just review them. The product planners seemed to think there was a market or this wouldn't exist. BTW, while I don't think this is the best design to come from BMW, I feel it's far from the worst. A big improvement over the the 5 GT.
@@DrivenCarReviews I agree it is a big improvement over the 5 series version, which incidentally I've seen very good deals on if one can stomach the design. I sold cars for a brief period and when I was in the business, would study target markets and would sometimes be surprised who actually would end up buying a given vehicle. Ex. The Honda cross tour would ostensibly seem like a good vehicle for a family vehicle. Turned out that a surprising number of buyers were males in their 50s downsizing from full size SUVs. Thanks again for your reviews, the production values are some of the best on RUclips.
Tom, Will this be available in an Oleg Cassini edition like the 74 AMC Matador coupe which undoubtedly inspired it? ;)
:)
I didn't see any Matador-like orange trim or carpet on the BMW site. But for a price...
Good sport.
Those were the days, Cartier editions, Bill Blass editions .....the list goes on.
Givenchy editions....
"In My Dreams" the 5 series wagon would be available in the States. 🤘 If I was a BMW executive, I would fight "Tooth and Nail" to offer both the 3 and 5 series wagons in the States. 😛
They would argue that they are already available... as the X3 and X5. As much as I like wagons (and manual transmissions) the general public just isn't keen on them. The marketplace decides.
the 3series wagon is available in the states; starts at a whopping $45k (330i xdrive ONLY) and you get it ONE way...but why is the 3series $43k+ anyways, not a good deal; however, 98% of all BMW drivers are leasers anyways so no one wants to stay in them for the long haul , just a new car every 3 years until the end of time (the never-ending car payment)
the 5 series wagon SHOULD be here, but got killed off by the X3/X5 as people want to sit higher even though they will never take their "activity" vehicle on any "activities" I don't agree with BMW on any of the vehicle ops and despise the X1/X2/X3. I believe they have lost they way, much like Toyota...coincidence?
Driven Car Reviews So no one got my Dokken puns? ☹🙁😒😟😭
I'm sure I would have... if I listened to Dokken.
Judging by 6:45 , I thought you did :) Oh wells.
Tom, can you review a Buick please?
Regal GS
I did not realize they still made these squashed CUVs. BTW Wagons Rule, hatchbacks are a compromise. #OverPricedCrosstour #SaveTheWagon
@Right Lane Hog Apparently you somehow missed the Kia Stinger. I share your affection for wagons but we're obviously a minority in North America.
Stephen Hendricks, Wagon lovers are an oppressed minority. As for the Stinger, that is much more of a lift-back sedan in my view.
Right Lane Hog. I wasn't comparing the Stinger to a wagon. I was comparing it to the BMW 6.2 GT that I thought you comared to a "squashed CUV."
Got it.
Great car, BUT I do like the new A7 more, it looks a little better and I REALLY like those dancing lights it does. haha. And the double touch screens in there.
Have not seen one in person yet. Sadly. I always loved the design of the first A7.
Will you review the 2019 Ford Ranger when it comes out
Yes, I'm scheduled to go the event mid December.
@@DrivenCarReviews awesome thank you sir by the way big fan of your work
Gorgeous leather, but I shudder to think that the Auto Stop/Start feature is NOT DEFEATABLE. Btw, did you actually release your evil twin?...or should I call the ASPCA?
I thought u finished with Kitchen remodeling. How is it ?
Very close. I just used the new GMC Sierra Denali to take the final load of junk to the dump.
Is that the one with cool tailgate?
Yup. And it is pretty cool. I used it a number of times. You'll see....
honestly, have a pretty big crush on the BMW GT cars...any recommendations on getting a decent used one?
I'd try Cars.com. Not very many of those though. Be patient.
Driven Car Reviews good thing I don’t have the cash quite yet! Patience will be easier that way 😉 Thanks for the advice, Tom!
World First! 2X4s in a BMW.
I doubt that. I'm guessing there have been hundreds of lumber yard runs in X3s and X4s.
Well, dozens at least.
😅Anyone. Reading this review 5 years having passed will notice the style has got more contemporary with age - but BMW does not import them anymore.
Why are all reviews based on the dynamic handling package, even though almost no one bought it? There are only 4 used examples in the entire US with it right now.
6:53 iPhone with a headphone jack OMG good old days
Hey, my 6S keeps on working and I got a free battery replacement. Hard to justify a new one. Would like to have the camera of the XS though.
really wish i could afford one.
"Don't move here"... haha! I think you mean you don't want more Californians; I'm sure you'd love more of us east coasters :-).
@alliejr Think again. :)
I think there are more midwesterners than Californians here. I seem to run into a lot of folks from Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Minnesotans of course being the smartest and best looking...
Minnesotans, exemplifying the concept of "Midwest Nice" are especially welcome here. They easily pass the etiquette test required of all Seattle immigrants.
Liked for the video, not the car.
First watch, first comment, as always, awesome review Tom
06:52 Still rocking an iPhone 6/6s eh??? 😆😆😅😅
Yup. Still works like new.
That`s a liftback, the wagon on the other hand is more practical, why don`t they bring it instead?
I don't like modern BMWs. Tbh I'm not too big on modern cars period. I like watching review videos though. But for now I'll think I'll stick to my 80s sports car
Hey Tom
Can you review the 2019 Audi A7 ?
Want to. Haven't seen one in the press fleet yet.
Hey, it's the BMW Crosstour!
Lol hmmmm Alex on Autos gonna get you
Why is this thing $40K better than a loaded Stinger GT2, spec for spec
Good point
great review, hideous design.
no V8
Frameless Windows??? Ehhh
Over $70K and you only get 300 HP? German cars are a definition of a rip off !
That does not look like it’s worth 80k
This thing is a hunchback like all BMW GT models
Styling is subjective, but with wagons making a mild comeback I would assume BMW would want in on the action instead of this weird looking thing.
BMW GTs are, as usual, unbelievably ugly.
Yes.
Over Priced.
You're Trunk tests are a joke lately . You can easily fit way more bags of toilet / bounty paper than what you show ....
Why BMW, why?
BMW is hot garbage. The perfect car for emotionally withholding soccer moms.
