I have ran the closed lid on my 18 GT A10 for two years almost. I have zero complaints and love the results.
Do you daily drive your mustang?
@@314BighomieTv Could have easily.
@Vince Vince closed lid, No.
You act like they talked about you and your car like they tagged you in the comments
Having a naturally aspirated 2016 GT when I installed the Ford Performance Stage 2 package....87mm throttle body, CAI and the ProCal tune low end sucked.....I had Livernois write me a 93 octane and 91 octane program....These fellas in Dearborn, MI. are in my opinion one of the very best at writing tunes and very humble about it......That being said they're tunes absolutely woke this Coyote engine up throughout the whole power band......All you really need to know is Livernois is across the street from Ford Performance HQ and they have a great relationship between engineers.....They were able to locate my lost as built files from they're own data banks....
I can remember when Chrysler, Ford, and GM had the cold air system back in the late 60s and early 70s. GM had the ram air, and the cowl induction systems, Ford had ram air, and Chrysler had the air grabber, and ram air. some was the hood shaker hood scoops, some built into the hood, and some with pop up hood scoops. it would be nice to see those type of hood scoops again.
So who'd of thought a sealed system would work better in real world conditions....besides all the engineers at Ford who've spent millions developing them...
Yet the 350 use a open one...
Manufactures use closed air boxes because they have to meet federal government noise levels, using a closed air box can be made very quite. An open air intake will be louder and likely to loud to meet federal government noise standard.
@@diecast118scale7 you can’t seal a open element filter… the reason they dyno test so high is because EVERY dyno is hood open, I’ve seen cars with the hood closed loose 10hp PER run ( within reason) with the hood closed… having a SEALED intake with the inlet in a high pressure area it will ABSOLUTELY out perform a open element filter
@@Texas_Road_Warrior yepppp unless you completely route the intake out of youre engine then yes but now you worry abt debris and weather 99% of cold air intakes make you slower
@@diecast118scale7i domt think thr feds mandate intake noise… its not enough noise like an exhaust.. i think they do closed air thinking the customers want quieter cars. And they are lower maintenance and paper filters probably clean the air better.
Manufacturers should dyno test their products with the hood closed
They do, which is why mustangs come with a closed-lid system from the factory.
@@allenklingsporn6993 Don't the Mach 1 and GT350 come with open CAI though? The Ford Performance one.
@trappy chan they do. 10-14 gt500s did as well. It don't really matter as long as it's done the same both way. People bitch too much about hood up hood down you can't properly simulate the airflow with the hood down. Those fans are not gonna be like 100+ mph worth of air coming through the front.
If your intake isn't "sealed" all the way to the intake nose, all you're doing is sucking in engine heat.
I have ram air
Even cruising around 35 mph you’re basically pushing out the hot engine bay air through the hood vents and getting the cooler air from underneath the motor. This will show on the IAT gauge unless it’s over 100 degrees outside.
There's alot of wind blowing through.
Not true at all, the under hood heat is extracted as air enters from the front and under the car, it is not a bubble that just sits there, if that were so engines would overheat in short order if the under hood air had no escape path.
Do you actually think that while you’re driving there isn’t any outside air entering through all the openings in the front of the car and wheel well? Try to drive through a river and let us know how airtight your engine bay is, Einstein. 😂
What y’all really need is to open up the front grill for the silver bullet. Factory grill limits how much air you can put through the intake snorkel. Maybe try to cut out the grill. I’d be really interested to see if you can shove more air by grill delete.
This modification was done a while back. With the bumper removed you can open up that whole area to really maximize the amount of air going into the air box.
@@LongStroke351 You do know why Ford designed it that way right??? 1: It was to prevent drag and 2nd they did a rain and snow snow driving test and I actually watched that video where rain had destroyed the CAI and complete engine compartment when they allowed more air and opened up their grills to allow more air to enter. I have always thought myself and wonder why we only have a few holes in the right hand grill to push air through and most was blocked?..It was purely designed to let air in and keep the elements out at the same time! The only functional hood I've seen was from Cervini where both of their hood ducts were redirected straight to the CAI which is surprising because imagine those ducts passing water to your CAI on a rainy day?
@@peterwho9380 a little rain going into the CAI will do nothing but steam clean your combustion chambers. It will not harm the engine.
@@LongStroke351 and plus high performance filters can stand mist as well so if a little bit of water gets on the filter its not going to hurt anything besides help getting the inlet temp down because the air hitting the mist will cool it down in results will help with inlet air temps in some conditions
@Peter Who? It's fine and velossa tech offers a ram air snorkel that would work great in conjunction with the closed box setup
Learned 30yrs ago in NHRA Pro Stock - every 10° chng in a N/A induct. system bout 1% change in pwr. Cooler air = 1% increase obviously on same track temps that we could race on. (not @ zero degrees in other words). Hotter induction air of coarse goes the other way. How close this is to street driven stuff may mathematically be similar. Not necessarily real world. We used tightly sealed hoid scoop to carb setups.
(well, sorta.. some tricks 3 decades later we still dont discuss)
A CAI goes to the bumper area a few inches from the gnd... your discussion is about a short ram intake inside an airbox vs in a engine compartment...
Ambient Air intake. Never seen a CAI pull in air colder than ambient.
You are right👍

For Cold air intake Whats best for HP gain. Closed, Top open or fully exposed?
So at this moment my 2017 mustang GT with and auto-6speed x-pipe, 3.55 gear with your pro-flow cold-air with insert in , factory tune it ran 12.36 at 115.78 mph. Will the closed air box with your tune and 120mm opening improved my time . Hoping to improve to a 12.20 ET is it possible. Thanks Scott Boda.
I basically have your setup in my 2016 with a closed airbox and a Lund tune. I’m running 11.95 right now
Matthew Goodall wow! This is a great ET what is your M/H on that pass and what your shift point. Are you 6-speed auto or 6- manual. Thanks!
@@matthewgoodall4752 Matthew is your mustang and automatic 6-speed also, did you have your stock air intake before or and aftermarket one. What were you run for time before the STEEDA CLOSED LID. THANKS!
As I have gotten older I prefer closed lids. Though I currently run open air because it’s what came with my supercharger.
STEEDA SHOULD THINK ABOUT A CLEAR LID FOR THE BOX . IT WOULD LOOK NICER
Like the Roush???

What does max effort cold air intake mean?
Before buying any aftermarket cai try this..especially if a 15-17 gt(not sure about newer grilles)...drop a k&n in the stock air box then carefully dremel out the rest of grille plastic restrictions..noticeable gains right off...so quit paying money to suck huge amounts of hot engine bay air
Is it works?
Agree. The 98-02 LS1 camaros had many free mods worth decent gains. One being the ",free ram air mod" and cutting out the foam where the air inlets were blocked off. Our cars have a few as well.
Hmmmm I have a 2015 gt premium. I think I’m gonna try this 🤔🤔🤔
the whole grille plastic ? or what parts exactly , I feel like it will look off
Can we get closed lid cold air for the s197 coyote please🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
We’ll run it up the flagpole! -Chris
@@steedaautosports If you build it, they will come.
So I'm looking into going the all motor route on my '18 car and a ported CJ from Bret Barber is happening..
Only issue is I plan on driving the car a lot. Obviously Scott said the closed lid setup is a "max effort" type deal that can get some idle surging.. In that instance, would that not be something you'd suggest for a car that might see a lot of daily duty?
Intakes are kinda' limited once you introduce that oval throttle body into the equation. It's either a heat sucking PMAS or JLT or this closed lid setup that may or may not have iffy MAF signal.
Do you make a closed air intake to fit the 2019 BULLITT ?
Is the Engine Control Module (ECM) able to change the setting as it adapts to the new Air Intake?
Hey Steeda, I’m in Florida where’s it’s very hot and I see IATs of 130-140 in stop and go traffic , is this normal ? I have the Steeda pro flow intake , closed box with thr insert removed. Tuned by Lund
Yup normal. I can get up to 150 at times.
U on E85 becuase i was just told to put insert in after data logging on 93 tune without insert and getting the ok to get the flex and e85r tune which says steedaBOXNI in name of tune thus meaning NO insert u would think. And i ask them should i put the insert in. So i do. And then go to drive and car goes into limp mode becasue the pos insert hangs out and when air going in it probably causes air to get all fckd up flow wise and that happend. But thankfully it happened right after leaving so i just pulled a u and back in garage in 30 seconds. So now im thinking wtf and probably going to have to put stock cai back in and perhaps i can use the k&n filter that came with the steeda box intake and use that in my stock box intake . Steeda should of put way more thought into this crap . Im a 20yr journeyman machinist and no one is selling me on this bs air flow with the insert in.
@@Matt-xy6cf holy run-on sentences lol. Jk. Im tuned with Lund and I never had any issues brother. Insert out, always has been. I’ve been tuned with Alex Flores and Brandon and never any issues.
@@Matt-xy6cf I do not mean to insult your intelligence, but this does happen often; make sure your mass airflow sensor is facing the right way.
@@BadgerGT500 Yes it only goes in one way due to bolt pattern one bolt is slightly off more to show that its one directional. Also Why did Brandon literally just tell me yesterday after data logging on 93 with no insert which i didnt go into limp mode on. He just told me to put insert in and i was going to go get e85 then download e85 tune and when i left car went into limp mode . Why wouldnt he let me data log with insert out esp when that was my 93 data log . The tune even had SteedaboxNI in the naming (ni for no insert) Believe me your not insulting any intelligence. Im basing all this on logics. So yea he sent me the stock cai tunes which he said dont need data logged. And im about to put 93 tune on then run out of gas then flex tune. Yea i wanted to do the steeda but the insert fcked me and he said it needed to be in. Do u run a air straightener with steeda closed box or just how it came. U get good maf readings on flex tune? OR E85R tune? Why dont he recall others doing just fine with no insert to let me know then?
I don’t like how the air filters color fade.
What would Steeda recommend for a 2012 Boss 302?
I've never understood the concept of calling an open air intake a "cold air" intake, when it's drawing all the air from a hot engine compartment.
I dont mind smaller gains while retaining my warranty
Would these fit on a v6
So Steeda can I order a lid or is there even a lid for a 2017 Mustang GT Proflow Steeda intake non-tune.
570hp with no blower? Wow. Makes my gen1 with 10lbs of boost making 531 look weak.
How r u making 530 with 10 psi? U must not have good fuel or any supporting mods at all. That shit matters alot.
@@midnight347 well that was at the rear wheels, and it had a blower that wasn't efficient.
7:01 where can i get that american flag decal on that black mustang?
I heard Steedas maf signal on there 2015+ closed air box is not great.- Lund said their maf isn’t great so beware.
Our Closed Box CAI is a max effort intake, as explained in the video. Sometimes this can cause some idle surge, as you mentioned. If you're looking for the best of both worlds when it comes to looks, a clean MAF signal at idle and decent power increase, then the open element intake is the best for you. Hope this helps! -Chris
I have the pro flow box on my 2019, WITH the insert removed, tuned by Lund and I have 0, drive ability issues. Only very small detail I encountered is that the MAF didn’t 100% seal where it goes on the intake, but I added some permatex gasket maker and it’s good now.
What does the insert look like or where does it have to be removed because I am looking to buy one soon
White panda it’s inside the tune right by the MAG, it basically rescues the intakes diameter right where the MAF gets its reading. You’ll see it, can’t miss it.
I have no issues with my closed box with no insert. I added a airflow straightener in the tubing right before the MAF and it stabilized the readings very well especially at high rpm when data logging.
how can i get one in california
Have it delivered to someone you know outside CA....
What wheels are on that blue mustang. Never liked the look of the 2018 till i saw that 😍
Those are the Velgen VF-5 wheels
@@steedaautosports thanks
Was your closed air box system ever modified to change the position of the MAF sensor? Steeda indicated a while back that this would be happening due to some inconsistent signals and I'm interested in picking one up.
For the CJ applications we have an additional location on the intake tube.
@@LongStroke351 But not for the stock throttle body ? So what intake should i run for best flow using stock throttle body, keeping intake temps the lowest, using e85 lund tune , annnnnnnd maintaining proper MAF signals . Because my car went to limp mode with insert in. Insert was out with 93 tune that i just drove like twice to data log it , then they said i should put it in for when i put the flex tune then e85r tune on and the insert u can tell the air is not going to like coming into it and going around the outside of insert then working its way back in tube most likely causing turbulence issues around maf sensor . I asked them if i can try stock cai with the filter that came with the steeda closed box. Or perhaps ordering another brand of closed box. But im not a drag racer , or even take my car to a track to burn the stock pp1 breaks out the first time would be my luck . But i do like track style driving vs drag. so reason i went with closed box was lower intake temps. Just wish more engineering of air flow logics was designed into the intake . But perhaps just the size of the i.d. is literally what makes it a pain kind of.
I have the steeda closed box CAI, it's great!
I have the INJEN closed intake and it delivers also fantastic power and throttle response!

@ 100mph that closed lid talk is VOID🤯
WILL THERE BE ONE FOR 11-14??
Why open lid at all if it closes against the hood, anyway?
Is it just for looks?
For sound?
Been wondering about this ever since buying my new Bullitt (which I love, btw) but have never really found an answer to this question.

Good tips Scott excellent.👏😎
The stock air box flows better than both.
Actually the grill where the air intake is located has a solid area in front of the air duct creating a low pressure area that allows the engine to ingest more air. Similar to how a race car will use the low pressure area at the base of the windshield to intake air.
High pressure not low pressure… high pressure is higher than atmosphere ( compressed ) low pressure is suction ( vacuum ) against atmosphere
Getting diesel truck results. Bolt ons can add a lot of power to our diesels.

100% - without changing the headers on an '18 S550, a CAI aint gonna make any extra power than the oem intake. Claiming 30 extra horses? Thats just sales talk.
@@DennosManCave WITH A TUNE not by itself 🤦♂️
I have a Cobra Jet Intake on my 14 and would love to have a closed lid intake, can you make one for the 11 -14s.
Serious make it a people will buy it as there are NO others on the Market for the CJ intake. I'm in Florida and the IAT are causing numerous problems in stop and go traffic. I've had to replace two fans and make numerous repairs to the fan switch. I have to make sure I pull it apart and clean it and re-lube with dielectric grease and re-crimp the connecter or the fan stop working. edit: oh if the fan stops so does the AC and that sucks in 80 to 90 degree weather. I believe the system is working overtime due to the high intake air temps.
You can use the same closed box one for s550s on a 11-14 mustang gt, just gotta do some mild changes to make it fit ive been told
Will your re-tune void my 19stangs warranty?
Yea
@@jpadilla0515 No it wont. What're you even talking about?
1. There's no such thing as a 'voided warranty'. There is, however, a warranty denial. For example, if you throw a blower on your car and blow the engine, they will still service your radio. Your warranty isn't voided, they will chose to deny the claim if the warranty claim is because of a modification.
2. Tuning your car does not void your warranty in general. Ford knows who it's customers are and it's customers tunes their car. I have NEVER had a Ford dealership deny a warranty claim because the car is tuned. If anything, they've only asked me to return it to stock before they service it, if it was safe to do so.
I have a question.
A serious question i have a 2016 mustang gt premium that i am working on and looking at putting a CAI hoping to tune it for 91, obviously i want to squeeze more power out and whatever other pros it comes with.
My problem right now is two things water and heating inlet air temp increasing. I want to do a cold air intake but have the vents that are right over the intake box, my car is ceramic coated so big blobs of water tend to pile and fall off the car (idk if its gone in the vent havent seen it happen, but thats my fear). So i wanted to do a closed lid CAI and a dry filter, because i live in east Washington with a lot of desert. My other problem i have seen people say its not worth doing for the slight power increase because when you stop or idle for a long period 10-30min your inlet temp increases (which presumably is bad).
Another question the first kit you recommend is it a dry filter or oiled.
Hi there - All valid points, but the water pooling won't be a problem. My 18 GT had no issues with an open lid intake and I had it ceramic coated as well. If you're stop-and-go in traffic, then yes, intake temps will naturally rise. However, we designed our open lid intake to seal against the hood, so it's essentially a 'closed lid' intake when the hood is shut. The Closed Lid is definitely our max effort intake and performs the best at speed, but you can't go wrong with either option. Oh, and oiled typically always performs better than dry, just need to make sure you maintain the filter. Hope this helps! -Chris
@@steedaautosports I think so, so basically buying a CAI is about a bigger filter and a bigger diameter tube thrusting more air into the engine. And with a tune bringing more performance gains 30+hp/torque? And essentially from my understanding a closed lid intake would be better as for the performance aspect because it eliminates any inlet temperatures increasing from engine bay heat. So on 2015-2017 it would be somewhat better. So I'm curious why is the open lid intake better for daily drivers? Than the closed?
May want to change title to: 2018-2021....
It wouldn’t run those times if it was a manual transmission car!
I was looking at getting this for my 10 year old Fusion Sport... Then I seen the price! Holy Hell! Where is the value at? $330 dollars for a dryer hose and an old tin lunchbox. I'll have to pass. If your product was halfway reasonably priced, you'd have another customer right now.
You clearly don’t understand the cost of developing, manufacturing, inventory, facility and employee costs, yes all of that goes into pricing a product.
So basically this is a way overpriced Drop in Filter 😹
Yep, just use a drop in with the stock air box
And much larger intake tube and mass airflow sensor.
It’s not a motor. It’s an engine. Cmon man
