  • A few days ago we had the chance to go to our first ever football game here in Germany! Our local team, RB Leipzig (no hate in the comments please!) had a test match against Liverpool. While the result of the game was...less than ideal...it was a great experience for us and we're excited to go back once the season is officially underway! In this video we share some observations on our first time at a German football game.
    #americanfamilyingermany #lifeingermany #germanfootball #rbleipzig #redbullarena #leipziggermany #firstfootballgame
    About us: At the end of July, after a long time of hoping, dreaming, and planning, we sold or gave away almost everything we owned and left the United States to begin our journey with four children as an expat family. We moved to Leipzig, Germany, a beautiful city in the state of Saxony. This is our story.

    Thank you all for watching! Let us know in the comments what your favorite thing about going to a football game is. And in case you missed it in the video description, please keep the RB Leipzig hate out of the comments! We know not everyone likes them, and that's ok with us - we're still excited to support our local (Pokalsieger) team!

If you support Leipzig at an away game the opponent fans will smag the shit out of you. And that’s not supposed to be hate, it’s real. RB Leipzig is shit and is really extremely hated in Germany.

    Hey Sir :) If any of your kids is interested in sports and soccer. It is probably the best way to make a lot of friends for the whole family and especially the kids if they join a youth soccer club for playing soccer. Teamsports are always a great things for kids you know that from the states. There are plenty in every city. I have met tons of my lifelong friends there :) You might have probably known that, but in case you have not its really really great. I jsut mentioned it because there isnt really sports in the schools here at least not to the extent like in the USA with school teams and all. Its all little private sport clubs. Best regards PS: Not only with soccer although it is definitely the most common sport here. Handball is second and its really fast and entertaining. Boxing is also popular or Ice Hockey depending on the region. There are a lot of sport clubs in each city and I bet every child can find a sport they like if they are interested and choose to do it :) The best way to make friends and sports always teach important rules for the life. Maybe they already foudn something? :)

    • @OnwardMJ
      @OnwardMJ  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the tip, it's something we are going to look into for the younger ones (the older girls aren't really into sports, but have their own hobbies). It is a funny difference how in the US sports are so connected to the schools and here they are completely separate. I like the convenience of sports being something that you can do after school in the US instead of having to go somewhere else and all of that, but as a positive you will probably meet more people from outside the school that may have a higher level of commitment to the sport with the clubs here.

    You perfectly described one of the things I love about RB which is that you can go with the family and watch a game in peace. Some other clubs have problems with hooligans for an example a familiy member couldn't go with his little boy to the station of Eintracht Frankfurt out of safety issues. So we invitate them to Leipzig and watch a game and they loved it.
    When you go next a game, I recommend that you look if is a "Hochsicherheitsspiel" ( a high security game) which is when there is a higher possibility of violence because of different reasons. When it is such game they have more security and police escortnig the fans to and back from the station. So those games are less for a family.

    • @OnwardMJ
      @OnwardMJ  2 года назад

      Yes, we heard that RB Leipzig is a more family friendly team (and it's one more of the many reasons we love them despite the hate they get). I didn't know about Hochsicherheitsspiel, thanks for the tip. Is that something that they would display on the website when you're buying tickets?

    Although it would involve travelling a bit, and the opposing team to have a less well-known name, the atmosphere in several other stadiums (e.g., Dresden) is usually far superior to RB Leipzig, as fans of those clubs really identify with their club, and have done so for many, many years in most cases.
    This is not "spreading hate about RB Leipzig", but the (shall we say) "special structure" does have an impact on atmosphere and other aspects, no matter how successful they are.

    • @OnwardMJ
      @OnwardMJ  2 года назад

      I can understand that, and we may have to do that sometime. While I love to support my local team and I love the players we have, having studied at a university with an incredible (American) football culture and tradition, I know that there is something special about it. I just don't agree with the hate that RB gets. I mean, if you're going to hate a team, can't we all just hate Bayern München for winning all the time?

      @@OnwardMJ I am not sure how familiar you are why RB Leipzig - the club, not the team - is not exactly liked by most fans. If you want, I can try to explain the main reasons. Yeah, that would be a problem trying to go to a game with kids. We know that RBL has done a great job of making the atmosphere family friendly, and we appreciate that.

    The magazine "the week" once titled "germanys most hated club" and that has a reason.
    I don't want to go into details or spoil your experience. Nice to hear, you and your fam enjoyed the football adventure.
    But if you want to dive in deeper into (real)football/fanculture, you should think about visiting an away game or just visit a match of Borussia Dortmund, FC Union Berlin or Dynamo Dresden if you don't want to drive too far.

    • @OnwardMJ
      @OnwardMJ  2 года назад

      I've seen some stuff about it (something about the 50+1, the corporate ownership and less of a club ownership) but I never get into all of that. I enjoy watching the players and the team, and I appreciate their talent and the fact that they might give Bayern München a challenge some time. While it would be great to see one of the more traditional clubs, I've heard mixed things about the fans and the atmosphere in the stadiums. (Including 'fans' of one club attacking players after relegation). I'm also a big fan of supporting my local team, wherever I live. I think it's a great way to connect with the community, and there are certainly tons and tons of fans of RBL here.

    In a testgame the result isn´t important at all so nobody cares ...those are games where the coach is just trying out tactical things and to give certain players the opportunity to play in front of a crowd who usually don´t play or just barly play during the regular saison and in order to integrate new players who came fresh to the club into the team....it is just training under game+crowd conditions so to say and it is simply part of the so to say "finding the starting 11" process for the next season...

  • @tzutzumo

    It's nice that you were able to gain that experience. It's something special in europe. Yes there might be some violence at the games. But as a fan i haven't experienced that personally and my club is know for more agressive ultras. But as a fan it's rare that you get into a fight. Fights are more between ultras. From my perspective it doesn't matter where you made that expierence. Especially, because some clubs are so big that they are no clubs anymore. They are some sort of mega companys, but still pretend to be better than RB. LOL I don't care from wich club someone is a fan of. I go to games for the feeling of community. To experience something together with others or like minded people. To have some fun. And after the game we(our fans and those from the opponent party) party together. No matter who has won. In my city we have 2 big competing clubs. If we always would fight against each other, we would always have a bloody deathmatch. But we haven't, because most of us all want to enjoy the game. If you want to go to a game again. Please do and have fun!

      Good to know it's not as common as we may have heard. And I'm glad someone acknowledged the fact that other clubs are basically mega companies! We will definitely be going back. Wanted to go for the Supercup tonight, but couldn't get tickets.
