The sublime solo by the truly great Andy Powell on Sometime World is one of the all time gems ever !!! Bought Argus in early 70s & when I heard Andy's playing on that seminal album I couldnt believe how pure & emotional twin lead / rhythm guitars could be !!

Great job, Pete! I 'm 66 and was privileged to hear WA from the start on FM. What a time to be alive! To hear "Phoenix" for the first time on the radio. There were new great bands coming out almost every week and they freaking played them on the radio! What a concept... I was able to see the original lineup twice and the Laurie Wisefield version once. Great memories, great band. I once blew up both of the bipolar crossover capacitors (they were literally exploded) in my custom-made hifi speakers by having the volume too loud when starting 'Vas Dis' from "Pilgrimage". I still listen to them regularly. Their writing and talent have stood the test of time as well as anyone out there.

Wishbone Ash was huge for me in my youth and I love the old classics and some of the early Laurie Wisefield material. Thanks for bringing up the post-2000's catalog. There is some *really* good music in there. Like wine, they get better with time. Really been getting into Clan Destiny lately.

Excellent homage to Wishbone Ash. Thanks Pete. Saw them live in a small club a couple of years ago and they were sounding great, just as good as we know them from the olden days. Shame about the courtroom battles and backbiting though!

I was gonna wait to say anything until the end since i love this band sooo much. Then in all honesty you admitted it was in the '90s you got into Wishbone Ash. At least you found them and dug them. Well done !!
me, Christmas present in '73 for Live Dates. Great album, Andy Powell on the V, Ted Turner on Strat, LP C and Lap Steel.
Fave tracks for jamming later are:
    Warrior
    Ballad Of The Beacon
    Blowin' Free
    Throw Down The Sword.
This was all i had for years. Saw Argus as a kid in '72 but for some reason never bought it.
    NICE T-shirt, btw !
Bought Four on used vinyl (apparently the disc before Live Dates). Hardly played it.
DID buy Argus. Its awesome. At the time i rec'd LD, we'd go to Oregon to camp on property my parents bought then, 10 acres undeveloped. Went there in Oregon to visit family about 8 years ago and rented a car for the trip from the bay area.
I brought this disc for the drive up the 'road' that our property was on. In a way thankful i couldn't find it. Still the same tree lined 2 lane road i remember. It had been nearly 40 years since i was there.
    Argus was the perfect soundtrack.

I am from northern Wisconsin with limited radio stations back in the 70's so most bands broadcast were very mainstream here. Only by word of mouth did you hear of other bands. But one station carried the king biscuit flower hour that had amazing bands we did not normally hear. That's the first time I heard Wishbone Ash. It must have been at the time of the New England album as a lot of those tunes were on there. I was enthralled by the guitar work and am still a fan. There are albums I need yet to explore with this band. Thanks Pete this gives me incentive to check out the discography in more depth

  • @bluedream9668

Pete - Thanks for mentioning Martin Turner's band. His band has, in my opinion, the Wishbone Ash sound and feel. His drummer Tim Brown swings like Upton, Marty is the voice, bass, songwriter and producer of WA. Andy owns the name, and I have seen his band many times. They are good, but the vocals, although are very well done, they are not Marty. Joe Crabtree is a not a legato swing drummer that Upton was and Marty has Tim Brown. Check them out on video. They swing, jam and sing WA. Badass if you are a WA fan.

Great stuff Pete, and nice that you covered so much of their recorded history. In the early to mid 70s they had one of the best catalogues in rock and were huge in the U.K. Perhaps they were another victim of punk but even before then they struggled to match the sheer brilliance of their early years and the rock masterpiece that was Argus. Tremendous rhythm section with Martin Turner and Steve Upton and a beautiful twin guitar front line. When Ted left, Laurie Wisefield really lifted them again for a few albums. What really marked them out though was the songwriting on those early albums.

I saw Wishbone Ash at the first concert I went to in August 1972. They were the second warm up band to Alice Cooper who was on his "School's Out" tour. The first band was Ursa Major. I don't remember much about them. But when Andy Powell walked out with that cool Flying V I took notice. I probably didn't pay too much attention to them as I was coming to see Alice (who had a great band) and I didn’t have any of their albums. My first WA album was 'Wishbone Four (1973)' after a review in Stereo Review magazine. Next was 'Live Dates" and then I bought their first three albums. ‘Front Page News (1977)’ was the last album I bought except for ‘Noveau Calls’ (1987), so I have some catching up to do. I saw them again in 1975. They were the headliners with Kansas and Aerosmith as the warmup bands. Kansas backed out, not wanting to be #3 and were replaced by Bob Seger. Big improvement in my opinion. All the bands were great, especially WA. The review of the concert in the local paper the next day said it best about WA, “Where lightweight band fear to tread”. No theatrical smoke or prancing around on stage. They walked out on stage with no fanfare, dressed normal, and played great music. Ticket price for the show: $5.50

You just listed 10 of my most treasured records of all-time. As they say, you "get it."
I will be buried with my copies of 'Be Good To Yourself Once a Day' and 'Argus.'
      Absolute masterpieces.

Saw these guys backing up The Who at The Mississippi River Festival in 1970, I think. Phoenix and Handy are my favorites. First album is my favorite album cover of all time.

The first bars of the frist track on the first album announced Wishbone to the world in majestic fashion. Blind Eye for sure would make my top 10.

Great video! Their catalog is immense and narrowing down to 10 would be impossible for me. One thing for sure is they always had great guitarists to complement Andy. Ben Granfelt and Mark Birch were absolute monsters and I was fortunate enough to catch them live a few times during their stint. The box set called Distillation is an excellent place for beginners if you can find it! They should have been much bigger but they preferred to encompass various styles like you mentioned and sacrificed commercial success in a sense. The result speaks for itself.

Excellent video as usual! But, wow, just listened to the GROUNDHOGS...."Thank Christ For The Bomb" and "Blues Obituary" first time ever!! They never made it ? Do you have their stuff ? Love it. You know more about them ? Best regards from Germany.

The debut (Wishbone Ash) and Argus are rather different and both very good. I recently found "New England (1976)" in a store and got it. Also a strong album. If you start to think that lots of rock sound more or less the same. Wishbone Ash is a very interesting band. Very melodic yet takes directions which most bands doesn't. Glad to see that Wishbone Ash got some love here!

Been stopping to check out each song as you mention them. Somehow, they snuck under my radar screen. I’m aware of the band, but never gave them a listen. That’s changed now...
    Awesome songs...

One band that I never really got into. At the time of getting into bands your friends shared what they think you would like. Wishbone never crossed my path however, remember them always being on The Old Grey Whistle Test. BTW, in the background in your collection from the left seven down and one across looks like ABACAB

Phoenix at No1. There’s a shock. F.U.B.B. Would definitely be in my top ten. Also, from Whishbone Four, No easy road. Very blues oriented.

Wow! Cannot believe nobody mentions the Number The Brave album as one of their best. I think the title track is one of the best songs they have ever done. It would be in my top 10 for sure! I have been a fan since I bought the Just Testing album back in 1979 and I do not think they have a bad album.

"LORELEI"! That's my #1. Well, OK, actually I think "Time Was" is truly my #1 and "Lorelei" is 2, but when you made the comment about "should have been a radio hit" in reference to "No More Lonely Nights" I thought: "that is what I ALWAYS think about 'Lorelei'!" It's got all the earmark elements of an enduring FM Radio staple including an awesome intro/buildup, a majestic chorus, and a mind-blowing Laurie Wisefield guitar solo.
    Man. What a cut.

hey Pete... having been a WA fan from day one and catching several tours in the 70's - after you disclosed you were introduced to them in the 90's I was ready to attack your top10 with a vengeance. well... no need as I believe you understand the essential ash material was with the 1st 2 lineups with Ted Turner and then Laurie Wisefield. They were gold from 1970 to 1980 .... some intermittent quality stuff later but never to capture the initial impact of early Ash. Anyway... I enjoyed your video.

    4 Time Was
    5 Phoenix
    6 Living Proof
