Good one guys! I love the old stuff and, yes, Heep deserves a place amongst Led Zep, Purple, and Sabbath. I can't have Easy Livin' in my top 10. I used to like it and it's sort of the Heep gateway song. It was just vastly overplayed in the great state of Minnesota when I was growing up. Free-n-Easy is like another version of Easy Livin' to me. Heep had an interesting sound and lyrics. Kind of mythical and medieval and you didn't hear lyrics like this again until Rainbow emerged. I wouldn't describe it as "nasty," but I'm old, lol. Maybe that means awesome. I really think it's one of the most "transporting" soundscapes I've ever heard, something you hear, sense and feel. Sublime piano transitions leading you in and out of that haunting slide solo, which captures and transports you through an intimation of infinite space moving around you. Especially in analog with the headphones on, no drugs required. Really an amazing, trippy composition, so many moods. Demons and Wizards is my favorite album. Byron had a voice from the gods and a genius for inflection.

Yes man. Been lookin for someone to say that. One of my favorites. First got into them probably about a month ago when I saw Firefly in my record collection and realized I have never check it out so I went to listen to it and just fell in love with them and started to check them out more.
Agree with you, Pete! UH have a totally unbelievable amount of great openers. My personal 10: 1) Gypsy (considering all: the riffs, the form, the production, and the fact that it was out in 1970!!) 2) Weep in Silence 3) July Morning 4) Sunrise 5) Look at Yourself 6) The Park 7) Dreams 8) Come Away Melinda 9) Into the Wild (I seriously cannot believe they wrote a song like this after being around for over 40 years) 10) Free Me
My Top Songs: 1. Spider Woman 2. Easy Livin’ 3. Look at Yourself 4. Into the Wild 5. Angels Walk With You 6. Lady in Black 7. Grazed by Heaven 8. Stealin’ 9. Southern Star 10. Wake the Sleeper
Okay Pete. A future challenge for you: Top 10, 15 or 20 favorite.. BANDS of all time! Classic rock, progressive, jazz, pop, heavy metal, doom metal... Everything!
I’ll never forget reading the Rolling Stone Record Guide edition from the early 80’s. They gave every Uriah Heep album a “worthless” ranking in that book. They described them as a “mutant Deep Purple” and described David Byron as the worst and the most irritating lead singer in all of rock. To me that description sounds great. That was probably the best recommendation to me. Thank you Rolling stone for making me a Uriah Heep fan.
With Rolling Stone, all through the years,70% of the time, whatever they say is no good,I like and will become classic and whatever they love,I hate and for the most part will be forgotten in 10 years.
My list... 1. July morning 2. Tales 3. Paradise/The Spell 4. Gypsy (live 73) 5. Stealing 6. Wonder world 7. The Wizard 8. Rainbow Demon 9. Easy Living 10. Circle of hands.
I seem to recall UH being labeled the poor man's Deep Purple. LOL! I have the same opinion, I love both bands. I wish I could have seen Heep in the Byron era, though I love all eras as well

Sympathy is my favorite Heep song. In my opininon Deep Purple, Rainbow, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, UFO are the biggest hard rock bands ever.
David Byron is one of my top-5 rock singers. return to fantasy circle of hands july morning rainbow demon easy livin' sweet lorraine dreamer sweet freedom weep in silence universal wheels

I love all musics Uriah Heep !
It is so great to know there are Uriah Heep fans in the US. And also that someone other than me appreciates The Magician's Birthday (the song). I think Hensley was (is?) a phenomenal writer. I read that he tried to use chords in all scale degrees in the key when he wrote the song Wonderworld. That's a great challenge though not necessarily a good idea musically. I haven't analyzed the song. But I got drawn to the band initially because of two things: David Byron's voice and Gary Thain's bass
1. Return to fantasy 2. Bird of prey 3. Wonderworld 4. Easy livin' 5. Look at yourself 6. Stealin' 7. Gypsy 8. Sunrise 9. July morning 10. Lady in black
1. Gypsy 2. Look At Yourself 3. Sunrise 4. Lady In Black 5. One Way Or Another 6. Shadows Of Grief 7. Circle Of Hands 8. Rainbow Demon 9. Weep In Silence 10. Paradise/The Spell Honorable Mentions: July Morning, Return To Fantasy, Fires Of Hell, High Priestess & The Wizard and about 20 others
From the top of my head, the most impressional but in no particular order: Fallen angel, Sunrise, Circus, The Wizard, Paradise-The Spell, The Magician's Birthday, Illusion/Masquerade, One way or another, Footprints in the snow, Tales, If I had the time
I saw "Free Me" on German TV when I was 11 or 12 years old. A little later my grand dad bought me my first ever LP "Innocent Victim". A long rock and metal career should follow. ;-) Anyway: Innocent Victim is by no means their greatest album, but "The Dance" has a place in my heart.
Coming in late to this show, but what a great find. I 've been watching a lot of the back catalogue from you guys and loving it, but was so overjoyed to see another American giving some love to what is definitely one of the greatest bands of all time. I hear way too many ridiculously fickle people that refuse to accept any Heep since Byron got himself fired. Yeah Byron was truly great, but Bernie is pretty great also and has something Byron never had, a great work ethic. 1 song I would like to mention is Circus from Acoustically Driven, especially the video, with Ian Anderson on the flute. Absolutely fantastic. Thanks Pete for all the great videos you have put out. Oh, and an afterthought, Salisbury on vinyl is the only way to go. The mix got messed up on the CD and is way too screechy. The remastered CD version is a LOT better but still can't compare to hearing it on vinel.
Almost impossible to compile, but this is a possible list of my top 10 Uriah Heep songs: 1. The Magician’s Birthday 2. Salisbury 3. Return to Fantasy 4. Midnight 5. Look At Yourself 6. Shadows of Grief 7. Traveller in Time 8. Sunrise 9. Gypsy 10. Pilgrim P.S. All my other possible lists would only contain songs of the Byron years (1970-1976).
I am going to do my top 5 here Pete. I only know their stuff up to Abomiog. #5.Hot Night In A Cold Town #4.Salisbury #3.The Wizard #2. July Morning #1. Stealin'.
Haven't really listened to too much Uriah Heep (though I've been trying to get into more of their stuff), but I like Easy Living, Gypsy and Lady In Black.
1.) Sympath 2.) The Hanging Tree 3.) Rollin’ On 4.) Wise Man 5.) The Wizard 6.) Weep In Silence 7.) Sell Your Soul 8.) Son Of A Bitch 9.) July Morning 10.) Hot Persuasion
My list is slightly different than most people's, mostly because I really love the Lawton era. 1. Sympathy 2. July Morning 3. Wise Man 4. Lady in Black 5. To Scared to Run 6. Free n' Easy 7. Stealin 8. Gypsy 9. Sunrise 10. Free Me
Uriah Heep is the most underrated band of all time. Also I must disagree about David Byron. He to me is not only the greatest Uriah Heep vocalist but the greatest vocalist in rock period. Not including metal. Thank you for reviewing this band as not many people do and this was a great video.
CHEERS!!!! with Coke or Black Beer ???
The funny thing about Uriah Heep is that I doubt any two fans will ever pick the same songs for a top 10. Their catalog is so deep and varied, different fans prefer differing aspects of the band, fans joined at different eras, and the band itself had so many members that contributed interesting elements to their recordings. I can't even come up with a top-10; it changes often. I agree that there is good stuff from all eras.
First: Nice to see someone else drink (gulp/guzzle) beer the same as me. Heep was one of my bands back in the day...but I only own Look At Yourself thru Wonderworld...was just revisiting Demons And Wizards over the weekend. Glad "Poet's Justice" got an HM. Thain is killing it (as usual) but Box's rhythm guitar playing is just masterful on this.
Too hard to pick from all eras - so Top 11 from the 70s. 1. July Morning 2. The Wizard 3. One Way Or Another 4. Tears In My Eyes 5. Suicidal Man 6. Choices 7. Dreammare 8. Time To Live 9. Been Away Too Long 10. Stealin 11. Paradise/The Spell
One of my favorites is Circle of Hands...great vibe and lyrics....today is only yesterday’s tomorrow!
Gawd your mate is mighty thirsty!
Looks likes they're chugging Guinness to me.... why not eh?
John Hodgson lmao that’s funny, not sure how anybody can drink Guinness tho

I love Paradise/The Spell. Such a nasty song. And Byron is incredible on it.
That haunting slide solo still gets me forty five odd years later.
@@alanthorne3921 Agree! I get chills just thinking about it.

But sympathy sung by Lawton is one of my faves
Yes man. Been lookin for someone to say that. One of my favorites. First got into them probably about a month ago when I saw Firefly in my record collection and realized I have never check it out so I went to listen to it and just fell in love with them and started to check them out more.
@@quinnmitchel4075 Lawton was also a great singer
He sounded a lot like Dio in my opinion

I have a long-lasting crush for "Circle of hands", one of my top-3 songs ever.
Man, your really pumping out videos. Hehe... Love it. // Mr. Swede
They hated Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Rolling Stone is full of insightful visionaries, or so they think.
pre press. They were awesome. Check out Byrons vocals on bird of prey.
the persons of rolling stone shit they must die by cancer

Just came here after seeing the Heep albums thru the decades vid. Ryan looks like an Englishman here. 😀
Kudos, gentlemen, for listening to 26 Uriah Heep albums! That certainly must have been torture, I mean, a pleasure.
Sympathy is my favorite Heep song. In my opininon Deep Purple, Rainbow, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, UFO are the biggest hard rock bands ever.
My favourites are July Morning and Sunrise and Pilgrim.
But their are so many from this talented legendary British group.
They've played "Rainbow Demon" two days ago in Dortmund. I didn't recognize it. They played it a lot heavier than it is on studio.
You guys have strong lists here. I would put July Morning on mine somewhere. Whatcha think of that song Pete??
David Byron is one of my top-5 rock singers.
return to fantasy

1. Pilgrim. First tune I heard by the band, still my favourite to this day. So heavy, so epic.
Circle of Hands dudes, the 73 live version, Bludgeon Riffola @ the end!
You mentioned Think it Over. The original version with John Sloman on vox was far & away his best performance
My favorite Heep song....Circle Of Hands Live...

Uriah Heep is my favorite band with UFO !
But I got drawn to the band initially because of two things: David Byron's voice and Gary Thain's bass
uriah heep LIVE is great

2.Return to Fantasy
3.The Wizard
4.Stealin'
5.Easy Livin'
I tried to do a Top Ten playlist. I am finally down to 50 songs.
Almost impossible to compile, but this is a possible list of my top 10 Uriah Heep songs:
1. The Magician’s Birthday
2. Salisbury
3. Return to Fantasy
4. Midnight
5. Look At Yourself
6. Shadows of Grief
7. Traveller in Time
8. Sunrise
9. Gypsy
10. Pilgrim
P.S. All my other possible lists would only contain songs of the Byron years (1970-1976).
I am going to do my top 5 here Pete. I only know their stuff up to Abomiog.
#5.Hot Night In A Cold Town
#4.Salisbury
#3.The Wizard
#2. July Morning
#1. Stealin'.
Love the Heep t.shirt Return to Fantasy is my favourite Heep LP

7. Stealin

Thanks for the your comments about heep but my favourite is pilgrim and Out on the street (John Sloman)
Great show Pete. I have to agree. John Lawton was the best vocalist Heep ever had. Too bad he has passed on now.
Uriah Heep is the most underrated band of all time. Also I must disagree about David Byron. He to me is not only the greatest Uriah Heep vocalist but the greatest vocalist in rock period. Not including metal. Thank you for reviewing this band as not many people do and this was a great video.
Not the best singer, but still a great performer with a really charming vouce
I Like most 70’s stuff, but July Morning is Heeps Stairway to Heaven.
CHEERS!!!! with Coke or Black Beer ???
The funny thing about Uriah Heep is that I doubt any two fans will ever pick the same songs for a top 10. Their catalog is so deep and varied, different fans prefer differing aspects of the band, fans joined at different eras, and the band itself had so many members that contributed interesting elements to their recordings. I can't even come up with a top-10; it changes often. I agree that there is good stuff from all eras.
1. Pilgrim
2. Sympathy
3. Bird of Prey
4. Dance (sic!)
5. Easy Livin'
6. Salisbury
7. Look at Yourself
8. RtF
9. Tales
10. Sweet Freedom
Формула счастья = UriahHeep+SonsOfAnarchy
What about July morning??
First: Nice to see someone else drink (gulp/guzzle) beer the same as me. Heep was one of my bands back in the day...but I only own Look At Yourself thru Wonderworld...was just revisiting Demons And Wizards over the weekend. Glad "Poet's Justice" got an HM. Thain is killing it (as usual) but Box's rhythm guitar playing is just masterful on this.
Too hard to pick from all eras - so Top 11 from the 70s.
1. July Morning
2. The Wizard
3. One Way Or Another
4. Tears In My Eyes
5. Suicidal Man
6. Choices
7. Dreammare
8. Time To Live
9. Been Away Too Long
10. Stealin
11. Paradise/The Spell
Love Machine is my favourite Uriah Heep song
