General Comment. Loving the Deep Cut Dive shows. Have created a playlist on the streaming service I use and as I watch the shows I add the songs to the list. As this grows it is fast becoming my go-to playlist. What a fantastic combo of bands to toss on shuffle. Always look forward to these episodes!
Great to hear Pete and Martin talk passionately about a band that's never really got the dues they deserve, despite them being name-checked regularly as an influence for many bands and musicians. Derided by swathes of the British press in particular, but loved by a core of die-hard fans. Their renaissance over the past couple of decades has been astonishing, and their live shows are among the best you'll see. Spot-on comments about the legend that is Mick Box.
I still have not watched the show I will do it later but here are my deep cuts 1. Why 2. Sunshine 3. Choices 4. A year or a day 5. Pilgrim 6. Suicidal man, but what is most important is that albums that Uriah Heep made from 2008 Wake the sleeper to Living the dream are trully fantastic and a must have for all. For me Heep now days makes the best music from all classic bands.
Thanks to both of you! So interesting to see so much different songs being chosen. It says a lot about the quality and versality of Heep's songs. Shadows of Grief is a masterpiece of a masterwork Look At Youself! (happy to hear that someone think like me that this album is phenomaly produced and Iain Clarke's playing is incredible) In fact, I always thought that Look at Yourself is out this world. Perfection! Some Others tracks: Dreams (Wonderworld) Sail the rivers (Studio track from Spellbinder) Kiss of Freedom (Into the wild) A year or a day (Return to fantasy) Shelter from the rain (Sonic Origami..Box's solo pffff) Angels walk with you (Wake the sleeper)
My Top 10: - Knocking At My Door(Living The Dream) This song from their latest album shows they still rock -Kiss The Rainbow (The Outsider) Great lyrics and music -Spirit Of Freedom(Sea Of Light) One of the best songs from their 90s era, great uplifting lyrics -Tears Of The World(Wake The Sleeper) The best song from their 2008 comeback album -Into The Wild (Into The Wild) This title track is a bad ass rocker - Southern Star(Into The Wild) Another great song, it has Sabbath vibes. -All For One(Different World) -Walking In The Shadow(Very 'Eavy, Very' Umble) -Dreammare (Very 'Eavy, Very' Umble) -The Park (Salisbury)
1. Hot Persuasion (I also love Abominog and this was an early favorite from me... I get an Aerosmith vibe from the song, albeit with added textures that only Uriah Heep could offer with John Sinclair's keyboards, the band's signature backup vocals and one of Mick's more aggressive solos.) 2. Between Two Worlds (I've just heard this recently and I think it's a stand-out track from the very competent Sonic Origami... Been diggin' it a lot lately!) 3. Footprints in the Snow (An odd but pretty song in the beginning that really picks up on things during the pre-chorus to become a melodic powerhouse; Mick shows you around the end just how musical a simple bend can be.) 4. Been Away too Long (Nice ballad-type song with a tasty wah solo from Mick... Funny you guys mention Rainbow at the end of the video, this is one song in particular that sounds like it could be sung by Dio... Great vocals by John Lawton.) 5. Salisbury (Only one I'll slightly cheat on- a title track that I was surprised to discover that it's been played a few times... Anyway- total MASTERPIECE... Not many bands can offer an epic suite of this magnitude, utilizing an orquestra for an almost cinematic sounding experience... The climax is unbelievable, with Mick shredding amazing leads back and forth in a groove context between repetitions of Byron's ghostly, more classical-inspired vocals... For newcomers to Heep, DO NOT avoid this song for its length like I did when I was younger... Salisbury might be my favorite album nowadays.)

Thanks Pete. The problem I have is I love this band so much it is difficult to know what to classify as Deep Dive so some of my favourites that don't always get the recognition. 1 - Real Turned On - ('eavy, 'umble) A great rock song and using both guitars. Hensley playing slide before his solo, the almost Thin Lizzy like twin lead and then into Mick's solo. 2 - The Park (Salisbury) A great vocal performance by Byron to hearbreaking lyrics by Ken (My brother's dreams once here did soar , Until he died at the hand of needless war) 3 - From Magician - Blind Eye. Fairly straight forward song but I love the way it moves between the minor key verse and major key chorus. 4 - Have to go with Pilgrim. So many great tracks and different eras, thanks to Martin and Pete for a great show. Difficult to pick just 5 tracks. I never really considered The Other Side of Midnight is being like a very heavy Foreigner, but that's a great observation from Martin. 1 Son of A Bitch 2 Hot Night In A Cold Town 3 Rich Kid 4 I Can See You 5 One Way or Another.

I figured that we'd get one of these knowing how much both of these guys like this band. Yay! "Pilgrim" from Sweet Freedom "Free 'n' Easy" from Innocent Victim (I know this got played live a bit, but... too bad!) "Hot Night in a Cold Town" from Abominog "Wake the Sleeper" from Wake the Sleeper "Dreams of Yesteryear" from Living The Dream Such a great band. Thanks, guys!
“Working my way Backwards” UH Deep Tracks: 5: War Child (WTS) 4. Poor Little Rich Girl (Equator) 3. It Ain’t Easy (Conquest) 2. Choices (Innocent Victim) 1. Footprints In The Snow (High & Mighty)
God I can't stand Conquest. Bless your soul and more power to you. Sloman was the wrong guy at wrong time for UH circa 1980. Half of those tracks sound like TV theme songs from the period. It just never worked for me. Idk
Too many to choose from so i'll just do 1970 - 1980: 1. One Way Or Another 2. Here Am I 3. Circus 4. Been Away Too Long 5. Why 6. Lucy Blues 7. Choices 8. I Wanna Be Free 9. Shadows & The Wind 10. Feelings
Hard to find deep cuts for Heep, because some of my friends seem to know all of them. But how about these? 1. Illusion/Masquerade 2. Shadows Of Grief 3. Fallen Angel 4. Mistress Of All Time 5. Running All Night (With The Lion)
In the day, I took the best of Demons and of Magician's Birthday, and struggled painfully to just pick the best 45 minutes on cassette. For the other side I put the entire album Medusa, by Trapeze. A lot of people don't know about that one. Any of you might be pleased to give it a whirl. It's also very hard rock with swell melodies and mood. IOW, much like Heep was to me.
love heep...love martin...such knowledge...you guys work well together...a few select heep dives i just dig...'shelter from the rain' from sonic origami...'the outsider' from the outsider....;falling under your spell' from living the dream...peace always guys...rocky
Uriah Heep are a true treasure for music lovers. From my favorite Heep album “Return To Fantasy “ 1- Shady Lady 2-Devils Daughter 3-Beautiful Dream and finally that great B-Side that Martin picked Shout it Out. Great show!!!
Bruce Franklin Thanks under appreciated masterwork in my opinion. The title track is my favorite Heep song of all time. They still perform it live to this day.
If I had to choose, I would actually go with a John Sloman song, "Love Stealer." Probably the most hated era of the band, but to be honest, on this one track, I just love the simple bulldozer riff, those amazing classic harmonies on the chorus...classic. I also really like "Think It Over" from Abominog, I always liked Pete Goalby's version of the song better than Sloman's. Picking a Byron era track...I'd probably go with "Suicidal Man," probably one of the heaviest songs in their catalogue.
Thanks Pete and Martin another great show - hard to think of only a few deep cuts for Heep as there are so many - one that I like from a lesser liked album of theirs is Fools from Conquest (that had been recorded during the Five Miles sessions with John Lawton) - and there are times where I quite like to listen to that album and though I do think John Sloman was never going to be the right guy, at the time I was open to it as I loved Lone Star. My favourte Heep era , because many (though not all) of my favourite albums were from around the same period in time when I was mid to late teens and early twenties (i.e 76-85), is the Lawton era and Abominog, though I agree that Heep have been at the top of their game since Sea of Light. Nice to hear Pete saying that he likes Heep more than Zeppelin - got me to thinking about my favourite bands and for every one of them I preferred them to Zeppelin - talking about Heep, Purple, Yes, ELP, Camel, Rush, Rainbow, Tull, UFO, Priest, Maiden, Saxon, Schenker - the list goes on. I've never thought about which is better just which ones I prefer to listen to and not that I dont like Zeppelin I just prefer listening to others before them.
As much as I tried, I couldn't pick just five, so here is my top ten: (1) Pilgrim (2) The Shadows and the Wind (3) Midnight (4) Roller (5) Chasing Shadows (6) Cry Freedom (7) Only the Young (8) Tears of the World (9) Into the Wild (10) Rocks in the Road
I am guessing that you guys don’t like Salisbury 1971. I really never hear you comment on it and I heard that Martin gave it a terrible review. Well like you always say what some people hate other people love .. it’s all subjective. I bought that album when it first came out and my girlfriend and I played it to death. Then we threw a big party in our apartment and filled the bathtub with ice and beer and listened to that album. That girlfriend became my wife and that album is the first one on my Uriah Heep playlist. Yes I am old and so are they and we both still rock...
Heep's finest hour? I chose 5 deep cuts and 3 are from Salisbury. Time to Live, The 16min. epic with the legendary solos of Box and Simon the Bullet Freak (from US release).
@@ramonace4770 Free 'n' Easy is one of the all time greatest riffs. I'm old enough to remember when that album first came out and radio adds played Free with the legend 'It's a Monster!'
@@63mckenzie Agree! I remember "Free me" beeing played on the radio. "Innocent victim" was the first Heep album I bought, I was blown away by "Free'n'easy" and loved every song on it. John Lawton is such a great singer.
My Uriah Heep deep cuts are: Byron era: Simon the Bullet Freak,Green Eye,Silver White Man. Lawton era: A Far Better Way, Free'n'Easy, Whad'ya say. Shaw era: Golden Palace, Across the Miles, Kiss the rainbow
Love almost everything done by Heep, but mine favourite 5 deep cuts will be all from Byron era: Dreammare Shadows Of Grief Poet's Justice Seven Stars Shadows And The Wind
AWESOME "Falling in Love" from Fallen Angel Great song I always loved that one a fave of mine too I saw them on Don Kirshners doing that song! And on "Think it over" the single they released Originally with John Sloman is actually a better version, The Goalby version has too much synth where the Sloman version is more stripped down and heavier, I Bought the single from the fan club in 1981 and waited for it to arrive in the mail!
Hi pete. I love Uriah Heep. I think theyre in my top 30 its really hard to choose top 30 but i think theyre mad players and musicians (in a good way!) Ps it was great to see you Pete on the guitar hack livestream yedterday with Jeff young. It was a great hour!
I'm surely in the minority but I LOVE the Lawton years. Sure, no real prog at that point but man, John's voice is just too damn great to overlook. Hell, the proggy Heep stuff was always less interesting to me than the more conventional material. 01) Walking In Your Shadow 02) Seven Stars 03) One Way Or Another 04) Rollin' On 05) Roller Honorable mention: Put Your Lovin' On Me
Shadow of Grief is a MONSTER of a track, in my top 5 faves. Need to look into the post Byron eras, lost touching the early 80s and when I thought to look into them a few years ago they had 800 albums out and it seemed an overwhelming task to dive in...
You nailed it gentlemen. Just because Zeppelin or The Who was huge doesn't mean they necessarily rank above UH, Rainbow, Budgie, Sabbath, or other less famous or less drooled on rockers of the day. It seems to me that a bit of critical bullying is a badge of honor for bands of that era (or most eras LOL). Hell, Iggy Pop and The Stooges made the critics and industry throw up in their mouths in the early to mid 70s. Now they are worshipped as Gods of the underground rock laboratory, from punk to industrial to goth to glam to grunge. People don't always seem to have the best taste in music.
Yes, definitely Pilgrim and Shadows of Grief. Some others you didn't include: Echoes in the Dark Beautiful Dream Weep in Silence Illusion Across the Miles
I am beginning to think that there are certain bands that you have to be a man in your mid-50's or older to really love. I listened to all of the songs you guys recommended. There is nothing wrong with them. I actually like a few Uriah Heep songs very much, but there are more that I hate with equal passion. This was a good show and will certainly help people learn more about this band. I know I SHOULD like Uriah Heep, but I also know I don't and never will no matter how many chances I give them. Things don't grow on me. It is either an immediate affinity or aversion when it comes to music.
my exposure to heep was hearing " the wizard " in ,72 on the " radio ". hear we go. 1 dreamare 2 shadows and the wind 3 simon the bullet freak 4 poets justice 5 if i had the time.
Still very new to this band because they were never really promoted in the US ... I made a playlist of the Deep Cut selections but really now I'm more curious to check out this Abomonog and more of the 70's stuff - especially the Wetton era.
They were pretty big in America for about 5 years, but unfortunately they have been kind of forgotten by the masses in America through these many years.
Sea of Tranquility I am sure I am. I didn’t get into Heep until my 40s when a Russian friend introduced me to their old stuff. Absolutely love the Live 1973 album. I don’t know how I missed out for so long. I’ll have to check out some of their recent albums.

My all time favourite Uriah Heep song is “Why” It was a B side of a single. Real deep cut.
I agree totally
(1)"Why" -Out of four different versions, the Extended (10:34) is by far the best ... My favorite bass line EVER!

"Free 'n' Easy" from Innocent Victim (I know this got played live a bit, but... too bad!)
"Hot Night in a Cold Town" from Abominog
"Wake the Sleeper" from Wake the Sleeper
"Dreams of Yesteryear" from Living The Dream
Such a great band.
Thanks, guys!
MY FAVORITE BAND ! 1) ILLUSION 2)CHOICES 3)IM ALIVE 4)BLIND EYE 5)QUESTION
Very cool!! Interestingly I saw Uriah Heep in 2018 and they played Shadows of Grief. It was awesome!
i totalloy love the Livin the Dream ALbum it is right now my most played CD. Purples Whossh is getting alot of play as well.
“Working my way Backwards” UH Deep Tracks:
5: War Child (WTS)
4. Poor Little Rich Girl (Equator)
3. It Ain’t Easy (Conquest)
2. Choices (Innocent Victim)
1. Footprints In The Snow (High & Mighty)
God I can't stand Conquest. Bless your soul and more power to you. Sloman was the wrong guy at wrong time for UH circa 1980. Half of those tracks sound like TV theme songs from the period. It just never worked for me. Idk
My best of all my Heep favourites :
1) If I Had the Time
2) Circus
3) Been Away Too Long
4) Something or Nothing
5) Wake Up, Set Your Sights
I love Heep and Conquest and Sloman even kicked ass. My guilty Heep pleasure right now. Conquest Rocks!
Too many to choose from so i'll just do 1970 - 1980:
1. One Way Or Another
2. Here Am I
3. Circus
4. Been Away Too Long
5. Why
6. Lucy Blues
7. Choices
8. I Wanna Be Free
9. Shadows & The Wind
10. Feelings
01] Shout It Out
02] Hot Night In A Cold Town
03] T-Bird Angel
04] Weekend Warriors
05] Night Of The Wolf
Hard to find deep cuts for Heep, because some of my friends seem to know all of them. But how about these?
1. Illusion/Masquerade
2. Shadows Of Grief
3. Fallen Angel
4. Mistress Of All Time
Looking forward to the next Uriah Heep record!
Great show for a great band. Thanks
High Priestess, Poets Justice, I Won't Mind, Woman of the Night, The Dance.
Uriah Heep are a true treasure for music lovers. From my favorite Heep album “Return To Fantasy “ 1- Shady Lady 2-Devils Daughter 3-Beautiful Dream and finally that great B-Side that Martin picked Shout it Out. Great show!!!
I always have thought that album was overlooked and not appreciated enough. All the tracks you mentioned are great.
Bruce Franklin Thanks under appreciated masterwork in my opinion. The title track is my favorite Heep song of all time. They still perform it live to this day.
MAGNIFICO...GRAN CONVERSACION DE DOS MAESTROS CONOCEDORES DE MUSICA: MARTIN Y PETE
What about Circus from Sweet Freedom?
that was one that I considered also.
1) Shadows of Grief
2) Weep in Silence
3) Beautiful Dream
4) Been Away Too Long
5) Against the Odds.
As much as I tried, I couldn't pick just five, so here is my top ten:
(1) Pilgrim
(2) The Shadows and the Wind
(3) Midnight
(4) Roller
(5) Chasing Shadows
(6) Cry Freedom
(7) Only the Young
(8) Tears of the World
(9) Into the Wild
(10) Rocks in the Road
Nice to see Trevor Bolder's Only the Young making your list. His tunes on their albums up through Into the Wild are all great.
My favorite Return to Fantasy.
I love Salisbury actually-it rated pretty high on my ranking the albums list for Heep.
Ανδρέας Καποδίστριας Awesome...that title cut I still love and that was the definition of progressive rock🎸👍
Sea of Tranquility That makes me very happy ....Love your show I never miss it
Pilgrim is my favorite Heep song. Great choice!
Damn, and The Hanging Tree is my second. holy crap. Same page.
Roller and Free' n' Easy. Two of their greatest rockers.
Great choice! "Free'n'easy" is just awesome! , my favourite Heep song along with "Rainbow demon" but not quite a deep cut as they often play it live.
@@ramonace4770 Yeah it's my favourite Heep album. A lot of strong songs on it. Love the John Lawton period.
@@ramonace4770 Nice to talk to someone with good taste!
My Uriah Heep deep cuts are: Byron era: Simon the Bullet Freak,Green Eye,Silver White Man. Lawton era: A Far Better Way, Free'n'Easy, Whad'ya say. Shaw era: Golden Palace, Across the Miles, Kiss the rainbow
Love almost everything done by Heep, but mine favourite 5 deep cuts will be all from Byron era:
Dreammare
Shadows Of Grief
Poet's Justice
Seven Stars
Shadows And The Wind
AWESOME "Falling in Love" from Fallen Angel Great song I always loved that one a fave of mine too I saw them on Don Kirshners doing that song! And on "Think it over" the single they released Originally with John Sloman is actually a better version, The Goalby version has too much synth where the Sloman version is more stripped down and heavier, I Bought the single from the fan club in 1981 and waited for it to arrive in the mail!
Pete is so right about the Abominog album and the vocals being very Lou Gramm. Almost sounds like a lost Foreigner album at times.
Magicians Birthday, in the background. Nice one.
Hi pete. I love Uriah Heep. I think theyre in my top 30 its really hard to choose top 30 but i think theyre mad players and musicians (in a good way!)
Ps it was great to see you Pete on the guitar hack livestream yedterday with Jeff young. It was a great hour!
It was!!
@@seaoftranquilityprog HELL YEAH!
I'm surely in the minority but I LOVE the Lawton years. Sure, no real prog at that point but man, John's voice is just too damn great to overlook. Hell, the proggy Heep stuff was always less interesting to me than the more conventional material.
01) Walking In Your Shadow
02) Seven Stars
03) One Way Or Another
04) Rollin' On
05) Roller
Honorable mention: Put Your Lovin' On Me
When Byron got fired, they found an equally amazing singer. Firefly is great!
Pilgrim from Sweet Freedom is a song from another level in anoher universe!!!!
- Time to live
- Shadows of Grief
- Dreams
- Been away too long
- I'm Alive
Excellent episode! Thanks so very much.
Yes, definitely Pilgrim and Shadows of Grief. Some others you didn't include:
Echoes in the Dark
Beautiful Dream
Weep in Silence
Illusion
Across the Miles
One from each singer: Beautiful Dream - Illusion/Masquerade - Fools - Weekend Warriors - Fires Of hell
The song why,I never heard it before, I can't stop listening to it and its 2020
My fav band since 1973
The Park (Salisbury)
Echoes In The Dark (The Magician's Birthday)
Weep In Silence (High And Mighty)
I'm Alive (Fallen Angel)
Hot Persuasion (Abominog)
Pete is right. Mick Box is very 'eavy yet very 'umble
Simon the Bullet Freak👍🏻
Love in silence
Great song
I am beginning to think that there are certain bands that you have to be a man in your mid-50's or older to really love. I listened to all of the songs you guys recommended. There is nothing wrong with them. I actually like a few Uriah Heep songs very much, but there are more that I hate with equal passion. This was a good show and will certainly help people learn more about this band. I know I SHOULD like Uriah Heep, but I also know I don't and never will no matter how many chances I give them. Things don't grow on me. It is either an immediate affinity or aversion when it comes to music.
Simon The Bullet Freak, Lucy Blues, What Should be Done, I Wanna be Free, Rain, Mr.Wonderworld, Shadows of Grief.
my exposure to heep was hearing " the wizard " in ,72 on the " radio ". hear we go.
1 dreamare 2 shadows and the wind 3 simon the bullet freak 4 poets justice 5 if i had the time.
Great Show!!
Pilgrim is the best song of Uriah Heep ever.
1. Wonderworld
2. The Law
3. Rollin' the Rock
4. Sell Your Soul
5. Suicidal Man
Still very new to this band because they were never really promoted in the US ... I made a playlist of the Deep Cut selections but really now I'm more curious to check out this Abomonog and more of the 70's stuff - especially the Wetton era.
They were pretty big in America for about 5 years, but unfortunately they have been kind of forgotten by the masses in America through these many years.
Other side of Midnight
Red Lights
Sell Your Soul
No Return
Illusion
Into The Wild
Take Away My Soul
I Hear Voices
Stand Back
Bad Blood
Why? is my deep track. The B-side from The Wizard. I have the original single, I love it
Pete, whens the next deep cut dive coming?!
I confess to being a “David Byron era” Heep fan that hasn’t really taken any serious interest in anything they did after 1973.
You are missing out!!!
Sea of Tranquility I am sure I am. I didn’t get into Heep until my 40s when a Russian friend introduced me to their old stuff. Absolutely love the Live 1973 album. I don’t know how I missed out for so long. I’ll have to check out some of their recent albums.
Try listening to The Hanging Tree. Because of this video I listened to this for the first time today.
One Way Or Another
Beautiful Dream
High Priestess
One Way or Another (don't care if it was a single, it was forgotten unjustly)
Shadows of Grief
Rainbow Demon
Great picks ! I would add Illusion from Innocent Victim
Ken hensley is a Legend not Mick box Ken hensley wrote All their classic songs u Give him No credit Mick box is a mediocre guitarplayer Gary thain is a Legend genius bass player David Byron was great
Why, time to live, a year or a day, one way or another, rollin the rock 👍🏻
If I had the time, rain, love machine, prisoner, seven stars
Tried to limit it to only 1 song an album. Heavier and lighter songs, which Heep were great at both.
Bird of Prey
Time to Live
Shadows of Grief
Tales
Circus
I Won't Mind
Beautiful Dream
Free 'N' Easy
I'm Alive
What is a good place for someone to discover the best of Uriah Heep?
Hmmm...the Live 73 album is perhaps a great place to start, as it contains a wealth of some of their more known songs, but man, there's SO much more.
@@seaoftranquilityprog THanks. I will start there!
The Hanging Tree is on Blood on Stone Anthology castle release
Blue phantom, nektar, gomorrah, eloy, message and grobscnitt started metal prog along with the uriah gods!!
