while Uriah Heep never reached the level of success afforded their immediate contemporaries Zeppelin, Purple and Sabbath, a lot of people dont realize today just how huge this band was in the 70s on a global level, especially in Europe and Asia. I saw them in Sydney Randwick Racecoarse with support from Cold Chisel...My fav band still today , saw them with Bernie at Doncaster Shoppingtown in a non publicized gig, only 200 people, one of the best concerts i ever attended. Thanks for showing the love for this geat band Pete..Long Live Uriah Heep

You're right dude, critics hated Heep. They were tough on Purple and Sabbath at times too. Critics just hated the fact that such raw, heavy music was stylish and popular. They prefer cheesy, weak pop music. I'm glad I'm not a critic.

    • @Lee.Higginbotham

Critics are the same then as now. Snobs who see arthouse movies and drink craft beer with horn rimmed glasses who think rock n roll is art 😆. Anything made by regular people for regular people gets pissed. I think what really pissed them off back then was that all the serious musicians played everyday people music. Jon Lord wrote fucking classical music for christs sake. It exposed them for the assholes they were who cared more about agenda and social engineering than actual music.

Heep were the second ever band I saw live. Queen were the first (1979 Crazy Tour in Birmingham), then Heep in early 1980 in Swansea, South Wales (my home town). They were supported by Girlsschool). Heep should have been my first, but I got the Queen tickets at the last moment from a schoolfriend who couldn't go. I was 15 at the time and loved every minute. Their drummer at the time (Chris Slade) appeared in our local drum shop on the day of the gig too which was awesome. Happy, happy days :-)

Really enjoyed that, thx. UH fan since the early eighties as a young teen. Thankfully my older siblings had great taste in music and I remember rifling through their vinyl collections and at first being taken in by the artwork then the music of so many 60’s and 70’s bands. One song returns to me time and time again is ‘One Day’ off Sweet Freedom. I find myself singing it when watering the garden or washing the car. It has such a jaunty, sing-a-long melody with great heartfelt lyrics. Anyway, thx again and great to hear all the stories of the other Heep fans out there.

I first saw Heep play in 1971, I believe. Before Look at Yourself and Demons and Wizards. I've seen them twice in the last 5 years with their current line-up of Box, Shaw, Lanzon, Rimmer, and Gilbrook. Their current album Living the Dream is perhaps their finest since their glory years of the 70's. They also have more than a few very good DVD concerts out with special guest artists that are part of my collection. What can I say. I'm a fan and always will be.

    • @DSpeir-pi6tm
      @DSpeir-pi6tm 5 лет назад

Mike Reiss first off I apologies for rambling, but I'm just curious . Are you referring to these band as being obscure just because they didn't get a lot of air time ?
I'm just wondering what your reason for obscurity is . For instance people in the past have ask me if I know any Zeppelin tunes . Since I'm usually jamming on acoustic in a live setting I will play " Friends".
I've been ask before why I would pick such an obscure Zeppelin tune . The answer is simple, it's one of my favorite Zeppelin acoustic jams . It's a perfectly legitimate Zeppelin acoustic jam . So what makes it obscure ?

I was born in '67, and I didn't really have any way (well, or interest, I was a kid, after all...) to discover new music that wasn't already played on my country's one radio channel, for the first ten years of my life, or so. But my mother's youngest brother did have several of the early Heep albums, and my younger brother and I used to sleep in his room when staying with our grandparents over the odd weekend (he was sort of not mentioned much to us kids, as he found lots of women to temporarily move in with at that time, I learned later...). Heh, the seventies! ;D
Still, all I knew about Uriah Heep when the 80's came by, were the David Byron years. And the one thing most commentators forget to mention about the 80's, is that around that time, the 'Nice Price' LP's really hit the record shops (at least in Europe)! I first got Fallen Angel from some record club deal to get a bunch of unknown albums at a very give-away price. And then I got Firefly not too long after as a cheap Nice Price album (normally at around half, or less, of the price of a normal LP). I really learned to love John Lawton's vocals during that time, even if I still thought of David Byron as being the 'proper' sing of the band... ;P
I slightly later got the Ken Hensley solo album with "Brown-Eyed Girl" on it, but it still took a decade or two before the first solo album by Hensley (Proud Words...) was available to buy (for me), with many of those rerecorded out-takes from earlier Heep albums.
After that, I went more after anything having to do with Purple, Rainbow, Black Sabbath etc, but I still remember that I really loved Abominog when a class-mate hit me with that one out of the blue during the late 80's! After that, there was just too much to keep track of, so I only learned to like the later Heep records about 20+ years later. Oh, well, I now love everything Heep, and I love a lot of other things, too! :D

Not sure why discovering your channel took some time. This was another great one! Lots of cool songs and I think most folks probably discovered them by hearing Easy Livin' on the radio. That song is to Heep what My Woman from Tokyo is to Purple in that there is so much more depth. My fave: Magician's Birthday closely followed by July Morning.
You bring a lot of context...why only so many songs could fit on an album as it was a pre-digital media age. Your format is great and I feel like I am listening to a TED talk but about a much cooler subject. Take care and stay gold!

Heep were the heavy band to also have big vocals. (Before Queen). On the early albums you can tell they were on to something but it wasn't quite there. They were still kinda Spinal-Tapish. But Demons and Wizards -- along comes Gary Thain, and they took it to another level. And that level was never matched.

Uriah Heep's 'Sweet Freedom' is my favorite of theirs, 'Stealin' is still one of my favorite songs of all time... that little laugh Byron does after the lyrics 'I done the ranchers daughter and I sure did hurt his pride' seals it for me. As a side note they did a world tour with T.Rex opening for them that beat out Led Zeppelin for top grossing tour, early/mid 70's

I heard a Mick Box interview not even 3 years ago and he was pumped! He was a major influence to me on guitar and if I'm not mistaken he also sang a lot of the very high parts. I was lucky enough to be in a couple of bands who weren't afraid to cover some Heep tunes and I must say that they have a certain frame of "feel" to their music. Such a unique chemistry and mixture of rock/classical/psychedelic.... stuff.

    Great stuff Pete,
Shame you had to rush towards the end. I got into heep in the 80's 1st two albums were abominog and head first then got very eavy very umble and look at yourself. Heep are so diverse with their music over the years and an underrated band. On the rebound great 80s tune for dancing to on a night out. long live heep.

Yeah, they have such a huge catalog and the clock was ticking...didn't want to go much over 30 minutes. So many great albums to discuss, and those later ones are indeed excellent and not to be missed!

Been pulling out my old classic Uriah Heep records since following your site and really getting back into the group. Whilst some of the later Heep is ok it is nothing compared to the classic years of Byron, Box, Kerslake, Thain and importantly Hensley who wrote the majority of the songs. Best albums Look At Yourself, Demons and Wizards, Magicians Birthday, Very 'eavy Very 'umble and Salisbury

Aye I was watching a vid from 74 and they did the rock medley which was cool for them being so heavy and philosophical to break out on some old American tunes..That was great.

Never heard a bad Heep tune but I never got into Langhton Uriah Heep much. I had all their albums at one time or another. I need to give them another listen...I do like Abominog though! Great work on the history of Uriah Heep!!!!🤘😝

I'm a Sarumite from Salisbury and you may not realise that the tank on the cover is relevant because a few miles to the north of Salisbury is Salisbury plain, which is owned by the Ministry of defence and the Army use it for excersises.Yeah, it's a cool album to be named after your home town. It's an ancient place. The original town was on a hill goes back to the stone age. The Norman bishop got fed up with the garrison there and built a massive cathedral a couple of miles away. They haven't built any tall buildings so the 400 ft spire dominates the sourounding river valley. It's an odd sort of place. If you like old stuff you should visit! There's a deconsecrated church there which used to be an arts centre. In the 1980s and early 1990s loads of bands played there. Indie rock was the main genre, but metal, neo prog and punk and reggae bands all would pay there. They would have great Christmas bashes where they would have national touring bands that played original music. One of those was my first live gig in 1988! I've seen my favourite band Hawkwind here many times at the city hall which is really great. It's always busy around the Summer solstice with people visiting stonehenge for the sunrise which is 8 miles north. Of course the original free festival there was synonymous with Hawkwind friends and relations. It ended violently with the police attacking the travellers on the peace convoy at the battle of the bean field.

Uriah Heep did not split right after Conquest, they toured, I saw them, they still were awesome in 1980 - as they surely are now. The studio material has its ups and downs, but they were always fantastic onstage. Very very special place in my heart, even if they messed up here and there and are not the best band the world has ever seen - title occupied by Gentle Giant. Heep forever!

Great history Pete - well done!! I've been a huge Heep fan since the early - mid 70s. I've seen them with different lineups when they've come to Australia. The current band is fantastic (live & studio) - & it's good to see such strong material on the last 2 or 3 albums. They went thru many fazes in the Hensley era - & if you take the albums on the strength of the material (& not the styles of music they were doing), i would put Wonderworld & Conquest as the 2 weakest. Sorry, i disagree about High & Mighty - even with it's 2 or 3 lightweight poppy tunes. "One Way Or Another" is one of their ballsiest songs & a true Heep classic - listen to Kerslake's drumming & Wetton's bass!! "Weep In Silence" is also right up there as one of their very best songs. Thanks for taking the time to put this together!! Tiger.

I love Uriah Heep and highly recommend The Godz and all that pre-Heep stuff. All the Uriah Heep albums through 1981 I listen to almost every day. Killer songs throughout the catalog and I hear the 2000s albums are great too. Ken Hensley was a epic songwriter and great slide guitarist and keyboard player. I highly recommend URIAH HEEP!

Hey Pete. I'm really liking these videos. Brings back a lot of memories. I'd love it if you'd consider doing a "History of Journey" one day. Was just relistening the 'Next' album, a phenomenal piece of work that I'm sure you like as well. Anyways.... thanks a bunch and keep trucking!

First non-Byron album I heard was Innocent Victim. There was two things I noticed immediately 1- wow, you can really hear the bass on this. As a bass player myself, I thoroughly enjoyed that. 2- call me crazy but it sounded a lot like Meatloaf to me. Not a bad thing by any means, just very different than what I expected.

However, doesn't sound like Meatloaf to me. Not a fan of Meatlof but love Innocent Victim and Firefly.

Uria Heep was also heavely influenced by Vanilla Fudge in the early days. I believe that's important to mention.

Great Video of my all time favourite band...Were you aware of The cd of the original line-up called "Live in Zurich 1971"...its a Dodgy recording quality wise, but features a 13 min version of Why and an 18 min band version of Salisbury and a 12 min version of Gypsy...Well worth trying to get hold of a copy, as it is(to my knowledge) the only live recording of the band from this period.....Thanks for posting the video....
