Join host Pete Pardo and special guest Chris Alo as they put the finishing touches on the history of Black Sabbath, and show off a bunch of their collected Sabbath memorabilia.
What a fantastic series of videos. I can’t believe I didn’t watch these until now. Great stuff guys. (We Soul Our Souls for Rock ‘n Roll is a great best of.)
Pete, you guys owe it to yourselves to go see "Into the Void". Yea, yea, tribute band...but, note for note, they play the first 6th Sabbath albums with exact precision. The mind blowing part for me in seeing them is that it was felt... seriously felt, the vibe that the boys had in Birmingham when they were growing up and writing/playing the early Sabbath songs. They didn't have stacks of amps back then and the Into the Void guys truly capture the essence of how the music was written and played. Been to see them a few times and they never disappoint and it's a great time to get the Sabbath fix in an intimate setting. See you at a show soon!?
Chris' collection is amazing. Those couple of backpatches are very requested recently among battlevest patch maniacs and can easily get astronomically expensive! The revaluation vintage merchandising has experienced lately is truly impressive.
In early 80s UK, the peer pressure was to get your denim hand embroidered. The Mum's of Heavy Metallers, Proggers and Rockers would spend their evenings filling the back's of Wrangler jackets (and some Levi) with Zep Swan Songs, Motorhead Skulls and 2112 etc. The aim was to have a massive centre piece and resist bought patches. Mental!
I would love a new Tony Iommi solo record with past Sabbath singers guests you know Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes and even Tony Martin. That would be awesome. Great video as always
@@ModernDayWarrior2112 Absolutely!! The only deluxe edition of a Tony Martin album so far is The Eternal Idol, but the rest of them so far have not been made deluxe editions. There is a concert that Black Sabbath did in Moscow back in 1989 that is pro shot that would be perfect for the second disc for The Headless Cross deluxe edition and make them audio. They also have a pro shot concert from the Cross Purposes tour that would be perfect for the deluxe edition of Cross Purposes. Hopefully they have other live songs or unreleased songs for the TYR deluxe edition and the Forbidden deluxe edition. I definitely hope to see these four studio albums of Tony Martin have deluxe editions soon hopefully and they would also be remastered for much better sound too.

Awesome video. Really cool seeing all the Sabbath memorabilia. Past Lives has a nice mix of live stuff from the original era of the band. I really like the songs from the Asbury Park, NJ show from 1975. That full show is definitely one of Sabbath's most well known bootlegs.

Pete, Another pithy band retrospective. Yourself and Chris have since inspired me to purchase the Deluxe Edition of 'The Eternal Idol' and am looking forward to its arrival. I have been a fan of Badlands for years yet because of the circumstances surrounding Ray Gillen's extracurricular activities, was always a bit shy of supporting his legacy. Well, my ethics weakened and need to finally hear the album as recorded with him for myself. I have, however, yet to purchase (or even hear) a copy of 'Dusk'...perhaps the last recordings with Ray before his passing. Cheers to you both! Brent
What's cool about the Iommi solo albums with various singers was that Ozzy sung on one of the tracks, so it sort of was a partial Black Sabbath song. I'm not sure if Geezer was on bass for it, but cool none the less. MASSIVE fan of the Dep Sessions (the '96 bootleg demos and the official 2004 re-recorded version), as well as Fused (2005), which imo had way better riffs than what would appear on Sabbath's last album with Dio only a few years later. You guys should also check out a brutally heavy collaboration Glenn did with Dario Mollo. The name of the band is called Voodoo Hill and they released 3 amazing albums together. Very Sabbathy.
@@hm_nn_5633 You can't help but love Budgie though. They were like the heavy, grungy, Welsh version of Rush, but they predated Rush by about 3 years. For my money, I would say my 3 favorite albums are In For the Kill, Impeckable, and Power Supply (special mention for Night Flight).
Really enjoyed the early ‘80s discussion in Part 2, as I grew up in Jersey and was obviously into the same stuff, seeing “Purple Sabbath” at the Spectrum, Rainbow-Scorpions @ MSG, etc. Any chance of a “Deep Purple History” future video set?

as they mentioned @ 24:23 Black Sabbath (Tony Iommi) recorded a full album of material in 1985 for the 7th Star album tentatively called Star of India ..with a different singer and ALL different lyrics. NOT Tony Martin.. NOT Ray Gillan... but.. Jeff Fenholt. In 1991 I was a live sound engineer and our production company was hired to provide sound for Jeff Fenholt who was playing a Christian music venue. At that time Jeff was a born again Christian. He DIDN'T rise to fame because of any association w/ Sabbath though. I think he sang in the original production of Jesus Christ Superstar back in the 70's and I think he even toured in the broadway production. During this show I did in 1991 Jeff would give his "testimony" as to how he had been living a life of sin and booze and drugs and sexxy time with unmarried womanz ... and ... he said he even sang for Black Sabbath.. I was mixing the front of house sound and my ears instantly perked up. In fact, I almost burst out laughing (LOUDLY). The church was filled with a very quiet captive audience. And it took quit an effort on my part to keep my yap shut. I'm a HUGE life-long Sabbath fan ! Been listening to Sabbath since 78' saw Ozzy live w/Randy Rhoads .. And I had NEVER heard of him singin with Sabbath. I squelched my laughter though. He then went on to talk about how several members of Slayer had been recently "saved / born again" but they never revealed it for fear of losing money. Again I almost burst out laughing (LOUDLY) .... because I'm a huge Slayer fan .. especially in 1991. In the end I kept my mouth shut and mixed him. Actually "mixing" him is not the right term. He didn't have a band. He was singin' along to pre-recorded tracks on tape.. So it was just 2 channels for the stereo tape and his vocal channel... all thru a 32 channel Soundcraft console. I had a full sound system (20,000 watt PA) a full rack of processors compressors / EQ's / Fx units. I remember thinking what a waste of a PA system. But hey ... they paid $1500 in 1990 money ! Just one of the many weird gigs I did back then. He was actually a decent singer. Good strong vocals and a good sense of pitch. Although his monitor mix / stage volume was insanely LOUD ! So loud I almost doubted he had been saved... cause no God fearin' man would be playing that LOUD thru monitors.. .lols.... Years later I heard the Star of India tapes. Dang if he wasn't right about "being" in Sabbath. The Star of India tapes w/Fenholt have been uploaded to youtube : music.ruclips.net/video/o5miT1Hxr8E/видео.html
I don’t know why you think Never Say Die is so bad? It is my third favorite. It has a different sound but I do like Sabotage and the first one better. I live in Atlanta now but when I lived in Montgomery Ny I would go too Rock Fantasy at least once a week. Steve is a great dude! Miss that place.

At around 25:00, he's blatantly misrepresenting Jeff Fenholt. Fenholt didn't 'milk' the association with Sabbath. And he never wrote a book about it. If anything, he downplayed it, actually. He only ever said he was in a famous Rock Band, and answered that it was Sabbath when pressed. Jeff Fenholt was a famous millionaire before ever being called into Sabbath, as he was the first guy to play the lead in 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. They put him on the cover of Time Magazine for it. He doesn't need to 'milk' the Sabbath connection, because he's much more well-known for something else entirely. Also interestingly: Fenholt confirms Seventh Star was intended as a Black Sabbath project from the beginning. Not an Iommi solo record. The fact that Iommi bought the rights to the Sabbath name shortly before The Seventh Star came out seems to support that.
Did you guys happen to mention the Live at Hammersmith Odeon album from 2007? It was taken from The Mob Rules Tour and sounds a lot better than Live Evil. Unfortunately, I think it's long OOP. www.discogs.com/Black-Sabbath-Live-At-Hammersmith-Odeon/master/302717
I CANNOT pick top 5 Sabbath OR Zep records because it would be like picking a favorite child for me. I love them all for what they were. I have something to say about the last two OZZY era records, but I also wanted to say that to me, there were two Sabbaths; OZZY Sabbath and the REAL Black (Dio) Sabbath. To me, RJD was "the perfect" singer and very much the essence of what Sabbath was all about from day one. Obviously, Dio was older and not living in the Birmingham area of the UK in the late 60's.. JMO. Having said that, I don't believe Sabbath would have made it as a huge band without Ozzy in the early 70's. He was the perfect fit for their early success. Now, about Technical Ext. and NSD: I totally get the dis of both Technical Ext and NSD, though I am personally fond of both records because of the band changing a bit. I have spent more time on an attempt to understand why Sabbath went the direction they did on these records than I should have (different topic)… I have four reasons why I THINK the band changed at this point in their career; 1) The band was becoming a three piece with Ozzy on his way out the door, especially by NSD. Bill doing a lead vocal on NSD was a signal that the brash, charismatic lead singer could be replaced or even just deleted... 2)They were watching a ton of bands sell massive amounts of albums recording more song oriented material. They wanted to appeal to more people; You know, sell more records... 3)The effect Rick Wakeman had on them as songwriters and musical craftsmen was very evident in Technical Ext and NSD. His influence and the introduction of keyboards to Sabbath tunes was most likely a que to the guys to grow musically. 4)The amount of money they collectively needed to continue their substance abuse was getting larger... Both Iommi and OZZY mention this in their memoirs years later.. They needed to sell more records for dope.. Simple formula is make more accessible music.. TOTALLY JMO...
I think I can forgive you guys for not liking *Technical Ecstasy* or *Never Say Die!* 😊 Although I will disagree with Chris on the latter's title song: I think "Never Say Die" is an absolute barn-burner that starts the album off wonderfully, and with high-flying spirit. The problem with the rest of the album is...well, the rest of the album. Although I do sort-of like "Breakout/Swinging The Chain" (I said sort-of), the rest of the album sounds flat, is poorly recorded, and - in the immortal words of Circus magazine in 1983 - it was the work of a lethargic band. Still, I love the title song, and "Breakout" sticks in my head so well that I think it should have closed-out the album by itself. Oh well!!
Pete, have you read the book Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, by Garry Sharpe-Young? It's a combined, slightly expanded edition of his books on Ozzy's band and Black Sabbath 1979-1995. It is large, lengthy, and has everything (and more) you could want to know about these musicians over this time span. Terrible editing, but a goldmine of information.
I think it is a little bit silly that Tony Iommi felt obligated to alter music history by having a different musician rerecord the drums for "The DEP Sessions" just because it was discovered that the original drummer had a gay teenage lover.
The Iommi album from 2000 with all the guest vocalists featured Ozzy Osbourne on one of the songs and Geezer Butler was on bass which was a reunion song of Black Sabbath without Bill Ward!
Bill Ward,Laurence Cottle bass guitar session bassist who played bass on Headless Cross and Ozzy Osborne played on Who's Fooling Who Tony Iommi solo album in 2000 not Geezer Butler.
You need to bring on Chris Alo for more shows!

Ozzy solo retrospective?
Did you guys happen to mention the Live at Hammersmith Odeon album from 2007? It was taken from The Mob Rules Tour and sounds a lot better than Live Evil. Unfortunately, I think it's long OOP. www.discogs.com/Black-Sabbath-Live-At-Hammersmith-Odeon/master/302717
Ugh, we forgot to talk about it again!!! But yeah, great sounding live disc!!
Oh well! Maybe in Part IV! ;)
UFO sighting at 7:48. Not the band….
my top 5,
1. paranoid, 2. black sabbath, 3. Heaven & Hell, 4. Master of Reality, 5. the mob rules
Now, about Technical Ext. and NSD:
I totally get the dis of both Technical Ext and NSD, though I am personally fond of both records because of the band changing a bit. I have spent more time on an attempt to understand why Sabbath went the direction they did on these records than I should have (different topic)…
I have four reasons why I THINK the band changed at this point in their career;
1) The band was becoming a three piece with Ozzy on his way out the door, especially by NSD.
I actually like the Forbidden album
Have you done the History of Led Zeppelin?
I think it is a little bit silly that Tony Iommi felt obligated to alter music history by having a different musician rerecord the drums for "The DEP Sessions" just because it was discovered that the original drummer had a gay teenage lover.
No Sabotage??😀
I Love That era. very cool Album megalomania. Symptom of the universe.
waw no motorhead why you don't like them?
What... No coffee mug ??
The Iommi album from 2000 with all the guest vocalists featured Ozzy Osbourne on one of the songs and Geezer Butler was on bass which was a reunion song of Black Sabbath without Bill Ward!
Bill Ward,Laurence Cottle bass guitar session bassist who played bass on Headless Cross and Ozzy Osborne played on Who's Fooling Who Tony Iommi solo album in 2000 not Geezer Butler.
Sadly 2024 and no Hughes\ Iommi project
The biggest problem is Tony helth
1st Iommi didn’t sell cuz it sucked. Iommi doesn’t even do so much lead
It's half a decent album, it started leaning out half way thru then totally fucked out , the Billy ldol & Ozzy songs were piss poor.
