    I have the Hyundai and can say it is hands down the best I have had so far. I had a few issues at setup but that was me not the equipment. The customer support was great and guided me through. It is very quiet compared to my previous model and almost 6 months on no issues at all. I would definitely recommend.

    Hi Keith, I have an ABAC baseline (yellow) 40l belt driven compressor about 3 years old and it’s one of the best I’ve ever used. Airflow is good and as long as you drain the tank (I do it but-weekly) water is no problem at all. It’s quiet compared to other compressors, belt driven comps usually are and I have to say, if recommended it in a heartbeat. The brand is good and the build quality is spot on 👌🏻 great video, always love your direct and honest approach with these tool decision vids👍🏼 stay safe!

    I use the sgs 50 l compressor with an ani hvlp spray gun with a good quality hose and fittings, I spray with pu enamel and waterbased never any issues. You can build a simple box insulated with rockwool to dampen down the noise.
    Personally I'm not a fan of the lvlp guns, they just don't perform aswell as the hvlp . Hope this helps 👍

I bought the same 50l MonteCarlo from a company called PJL Allsorts Ltd for £200 incl. free delivery. I got it off their eBay site as it was less for some reason, but I had no issues. It was delivered quickly and it’s been great ever since. This is just my experience, I can’t speak for others.

    Hi great video, personally would go with the ABAC as I have sold them in the past after sales is very good with spare parts available. I know that the Hyundai products can be hard to obtain spare or get technical help. If you are in Norfolk give a Ernest doe branch a call (Wymondham, North Walsham or Fakenham) they are dealers for these machines and although not in stock will be able to get you a price on ordering.

    Hi Keith, consider making a small , weather proof enclosure located outside, possibly behind your workshop. Put the compressor in the enclosure (which could also be soundproof) and feed the connecting hose through a hole in the wall. This would save space and ear ache:-)

    I'm looking at the Hyundai myself (50ltr twin pump). I noticed they are a bit misleading on the specs. Looking at the spec sheet it states Air Displacement as 10 CFM, and air flow in brackets as 7 CFM, the latter being much more realistic, I'm sure you'll agree. This seems to be quite common to see piston (or diaphragm) displacement specified separately to flow, but then Hyundai seem to have been happy to let people assume that 10-11 CFM is the flow figure by publishing the displacement figure in the "features" list. 7 still meets my requirements mind.
    Great video by the way, very helpful and objective. Thank you for making it.

  • @RB-ck3xr
    @RB-ck3xr 3 года назад +11

    On these amateur / diy pumps the cfm usually refers to Free Air Displacement (FAD) ie the swept volume of the piston(s) at atmospheric pressure which is misleading.
    I would be looking at 4hp (3kw) minimum for single phase use. You might try looking at Compair units. Motor power is related to output, a higher power motor will give a higher output

    • @samrix5793
      @samrix5793 3 года назад

      Which compairs are under £250?

    • @RB-ck3xr
      @RB-ck3xr 3 года назад +6

      None that I know off but remember "you only get what you pay for" and "buy cheap buy twice". FWIW, our compair (150l, soft start 5kw) is over 30 years old, run daily, drained daily, serviced regularly and still running as it did when new. I wonder how many of these amateur/ diy pumps will still be going strong 30 years from now.

    • @johnb9003
      @johnb9003 2 года назад

      FAD stands for Free Air Delivery, and this is the volume of compressed air that an air compressor will actually discharge as a result of the compression process. CFM is typically a third less than displacement or swept volume

    Can not really comment on any of the specific compressors mentioned in the video but maybe just a word of caution regarding the whole setup. I have a 50 litre compressor from aldi, which at least on paper has a more power and higher cfm output. I used it with HVLP gun (amazon around 40 GBP) at first for painting furniture and I was not pleased with it, because the tank is just too small and it pretty much has to run constantly. So I bought a cheap LVLP gun from amazon (around 30 GBP) and tried that, however only saw a marginal improvement in compressor running time, but the painting was slower as I had to reduce the amount of paint on the gun to avoid the orange peel look. As far as I know it is supposedly bad for compressor to run continuously the rule of thumb I've heard is supposedly 1/3 of the time running, 2/3 not running.
    The other things that really bothered me about it running pretty much constantly are:
    - the noise (probably less of an issue for you since you're looking at the silent ones),
    - smell of engine/oil after a while of running (my shop air quality monitor was showing very high number of particles and severe pollution) After spraying for an hour or so I couldn't wait to pull the mask of and the air in the shop was too polluted because of the compressor running (even though my air filter was running all the time), so it wasn't healthy to work on something else without a mask, while the panels or cabinets were drying. Maybe wouldn't be an issue if you go for an oil free one
    - in longer spraying sessions (30 min+) condensation trap would get full and I would get water coming through and onto the piece I was finishing/painting. Very frustrating!
    I am not trying to claim that you'll be facing all the same problems, maybe a better spray gun could fix a lot of the problems but I just didn't want to sink any more money into finding solutions that I wasn't confident that they will work So I finally decided to bite the bullet and bought the Fuji turbine and gun from Axminster, after seeing a lot of positive reviews online. I am super satisfied with it, just holding the gun it is in completely different league, but the price also reflects that.

  • @foxglovemead
    @foxglovemead 3 года назад

    Thanks for the review - which is helpful especially for a first-time compressor (FTC) buyer. I did end up ordering the Hyundai 50L because it is particularly quiet. Your review mentioned the SIP versions - but with so little info to go on, I also decided against it. The ABAC isn't so quiet, so your review helped in not choosing this one. Where I went a separate way (I also have spreadsheets with colouring) was to include the Orazio and Hyundai. They may be similar, but that's not a reason to reject them both? FWIW Orazio and Hyundai are the same prices but it's easy to ask for a discount with the Hyundai. Both these models now have twin outlets and the Orazio has a wing nut on the drain now? All compressors seem to operate the same way e.g. it pumps up and stops and then starts again at a lower limit. Mostly there is an output regulator e.g. pumps to 7 or 8 bar and set an output e.g. 5 bar. If there is a big swing e.g. 5 - 7 bar between off/on, how do tools that need something in the middle work e.g. 6 bar for a spray gun? Perhaps they all allow up to (say) 6 bar but work at a lower pressure (within reason). Until you mentioned a low volume sprayer I had no idea there were different types - something else to look into. Thanks, Keith again, for all your videos. Simon

    A quick Value Engineering lesson. You are buying: Max Pressure, CFM at Pressure, and warranty. So establish a system to award points based on those items. Figure out how many points each compressor rates, and divide that by the cost. In the US there is an ASTM standard of how to rate the CFM, and it is at a set pressure. I’m not sure if the EU or UK have something similar. Personally I’d just evaluate on the CFM per Dollar.

    Just had a look at the ABAC Vs the Hyundai, the ABAC has max pressure of 9 bar, the Hyundai only has 7 bar, I'd prefer to have 230l at 9 bar of the ABAC, than 300l at 7 bar of the Hyundai, as I'm not likely to need to go above 200l bit the extra 2 bar would definitely come in useful. I say this as an owner of Hyundai welding equipment that I'm very happy with.

    As an update, I purchased the Hyundai 50L silent compressor. The first unit to arrive had to be returned as it was not in new condition. Reading the reviews on Hyundai at Pembroke does not make good reading, they have very poor service reviews and something clearly is wrong there. However, the second unit arrived promptly and along with all the other Hyundai products I have bought has turned out to be a fabulous piece of kit. It is really quiet, recharges in 65 seconds and easily keeps up with a spray gun.

    Worth noting that the 'Silent' model is called the ABAC MONTECARLO OS20P UK - 2HP 50L SILENT AIR COMPRESSOR & the non silent model is called the ABAC MONTECARLO O20P DIRECT DRIVE OIL-LESS 2HP 50 LITRE AIR COMPRESSOR. They appear & are named very similarly. This I didn't realise so ordered the non-silent model in error. Any easy mistake to make to the uninitiated, but the quality of the unit is certainly very impressive, although mine was delivered without any front rubber feet. The dB rating is louder than my old slightly smaller AirMaster compressor & am after the quieter model so will return it. Also with noting it connects using the Euro coupling as opposed to 1/2” BSP (not surprising since it’s an Italian brand).

    Hi Keith, I have had several compressors in my time and I would tell you to avoid Scheppach, SIP and Swan as I had trouble with all of these makes, my choice would not work for you as I was given a large garage compressor when a friend of mine decided to retire and give up this business. I now have the air flow etc. to work my spray guns with power to spare so I am happy on that account but I did get a phone call from one of my neighbours asking me to turn off my compressor as it was stopping them from being able to sleep, I apologised because it was late and I could not hear it as I worked in Norway for a while so when I bought my house in the UK I insisted on getting treble glazing in even though I had to pay a premium for it, it is standard in Norway and one of the benefits is that you can’t hear any noise from outside.

    With air flow (CFM) you need to make sure you're comparing apple to apples. Some manufacturers like Hyundai are advertising the Air Displacement CFM which is not the same as what your tools will be getting FAD/Free Air Delivery (CFM). That Hyundai actually only outputs 5.28 CFM which is hidden away in the spec sheet.

    Thanks for an honest and really detailed review, if it helps, from their eBay site I have so far purchased from Hyundai ; An electric start Lawn Mower, a 70cc Chainsaw, a petrol Hedge trimmer, a petrol Earth Tiller and now I’m going to add a 50litre Compressor thanks to your review.
    They are based at Pembroke Dock and the packaging and delivery time on every purchase has been first class. I’ve had no problems with any of the equipment I’ve bought. No, I don’t work for them or have any connections (honest) . I need something quieter than the unit I’ve got ( Aldi )

    In this video I choose a new air compressor by comparing specs and reviews in order to determine which is best for my needs. My critera was as follows: small in size, reliable and good quality, quiet running motor, good airflow (as high CFM as possible) and with a budget of around £250.
    I compare the following offerings currently available to us here in the UK : ABAC Montecarlo OS15P OS20P and Pole Position OS15P, Bambi BB24, 24D and 50D, Clarke Shhh 100/24 and 50/24, Hyundai HY7524 and HY27550, Orazio 24l and 50l, Scheppach HC24si and HC50si, SIP QT24/10 and QT50/10 and Swan DRS-207-22, DRS-210-30 and DRS-215-50.

    Hi Keith. You really need the largest CFM available for your budget for spraying otherwise you will always be waiting around while
    the tank pressure builds up to resume spraying. It's frustrating I went from a 9 to a 35 CFM many years ago. The extra cost in
    the unit saved many hours of lost production time and running out of air half way through a large job. Great comparison work. Tony

      Hi Tony, as I'm only spraying small items (typically pieces of furniture) I'm hoping it won't be an issue. I'd rather have something silent and small and compact and wait for it to refill than have something noisy that I don't have space for.... I won't know until I try it though 🤷‍♂️

But the other tank doesn't need to be right next to the compressor just piped up to it. Could be outside and if you put a fitting outside you'd be able to air points outside. Instead of trailing loads of air line from the garage to the shed like I have to. Or sell the old one and put the money against the new one.

      @@hansdegroot8549 For trades it isn't actually that high, £85,000 in 2020 is 'only' £1,635 a week in turnover which really isn't that much. My point was that if you are a tradesperson you don't really care about the price including VAT as that isn't ultimately what you are paying as you claim the VAT back so you want to know the Exc. VAT price. Hence why most websites that are predominately used by trades people show the Exc. VAT price and then add VAT as seems to be what happened with Keith in this video.
      If you look at Screwfix for example, it has the option on their website to toggle VAT on or off at the top right of their site. It is on by default which to me indicates they mainly have retail customers use their site but trades people can easily switch to Exc. VAT.
      I get Keith is unlikely at the moment to be VAT registered but I was aiming to explain why sites price their products like was seen in this video and to make the point in response to the original poster, Michael Kelly, that such pricing shouldn't be taken as a negative in terms of customer care, you could argue the opposite in that they are trying to make their websites as user friendly to the people who use it most. But you could then potentially think that the site is aimed at trade customers more than retail customers and as such may not be as good/use to customer service for retail customers.
