      Project Cars 2 had top-notch physics and was best in class, by far. However, it's reputation was being ruined by people who didn't understand cars, knew nothing about vehicle simulation, and thought FFB = physics. These are the people who would play garbage like iRacing, and then run around talking about how that unrealistic pile of crap was a "true sim", because it was 10x harder than real life. Right now, the best simulation in terms of realism, is Assetto Corsa Competizione. The first Assetto Corsa is trash, with nothing but fans of it's FFB to speak highly of the game. But Competizione, is a big step forward, and even more realistic than Project Cars 2.

    I'm glad a former Stig finally addressed my biggest gripe with a lot of racing sims and sim games in general: Artificial difficulty. Many sims try and distinguish themselves by making controlling whatever vehicle it may be harder than it is in real life. You hear this a lot from real world pilots how if planes were as difficult to fly and land as they're portrayed in sims, we'd all be dead. Similar to what the Stig said about driving in the rain. There can be challenge, but it should be organic and as obvious as it sounds, realistic. Not forced just to have the title of simulation vs. game.

    • @ajrichar0
      @ajrichar0 2 месяца назад +5

      Kazanori Yamauchi said something similar re Gran Turismo. The act of driving isn't so devilishly difficult that it's impossible, as hundreds of millions of people do it every day. Even pushing those vehicles at speed around a race track can be done without those same cars suddenly becoming impossible to drive. But hearing that said by someone like Ben Collins with his clear driving and racing pedigree is very welcome.

    • @GamerMuscleVideos
      @GamerMuscleVideos 2 месяца назад +1

      I think there is a degree of designed difficulty
      However I think the difficulty in flight and driving sims comes largely if not mostly from the technical difficulty of making things behave naturally , lack of data, lack of development time and overly complex physics models that are then hard to design or get a specific result from.
      You will notice across most sims , it's a compromise between responsive input and snappy movement and balanced stability/smooth movement but then delayed response.
      Ben Collins comments are things people have been saying for 20+ years with sims.
      Ben and Nicolas Hamilton both gave the exact same feedback when project cars was being developed , all sims have real drivers basically saying the same things as feedback but driver feedback is effectively irrelevant to weather or not the physics engine will end up driving naturally.
      GTR2 , AMS1 , NKP , specific mod cars for RF1 work by people like neils husinkveld largely addressed many of the issues. ( Even if those sims are less complex than lots of the newer sims)

      iRacing is already behind many other titles regarding graphics and probably only on par with others regarding physics. However what they offer what others don't is an extensive and well managed racing calendar/schedule that always guarantees you one race or another at any given time. And I don't see another Developer overtaking them with this.

    • @ahicracing884

      @@TonysRacing600 kings can always fall.
      Chances are many who play iRacing regularly have other sim installed so not 100% committed to iRacing.
      If another game with better physics and graphics can get enough traction to crack the online racing then many will at least try it.
      The cost of switching is so low others can make a major dent into the market.
      To me, iRacing real strength is the sunk cost. People don’t like switching where they believe they’ll lose what they already spent.
      It’s why gambling is so bad. I’m down a £1,000 but one more bet and I’ll win it back.
      I’ve spent £1,000 on iRacing. If I switch now that money is wasted.
      Looking at the numbers still playing Assetto Corsa a new entry could win over the non iRacing market initially. Build its user base to a point where the match racing is as good as iRacing but with better graphics and physics making it worthwhile for iRacers to at least trying it.
      If it scratches their itch they some of them may stay. Then, more may come.

    Ben is right about how tyre models in sims are so often too peaky IMO. It's rubber on tarmac and in a lot of sims I feel like it changes suddenly to hard plastic on tarmac when breaking traction. But I guess for most people this feels more realistic so I've learned to live with it. Still I'm glad Ben worked on PC2 because it really still feels like a breath of fresh air to hoon around in that game. In the end it's a matter of taste really. It'll always be an approximation of some really complex stuff. And most modern sims get close enough.

    • @41BOT
      @41BOT 10 дней назад

      I agree with "often". But it is more often IMO that tires are on the opposite in simulations. I haven't played iRacing for years, but when I did it definitely had tires that lost way too much grip when sliding immediately after peak slip angles. In AC tires are little bit lacking grip drop when sliding IMO, but that also depends on a car, comes close though. I think rF2 is best at it, although it also has a lot of cars that does come to that a little differently, early rF2 ISI cars were pretty good IMO, although also I think each car is to be discussed individually, some years ago before they updated their tire parameters logic S397 (later developer of rF2) had their cars too much biased for sliding, thus to achieve best possible times they needed to be driven a bit too far past peak slip, later IMO they improved tires greatly and now they are much closer and tires were actually made to loose more grip with greater slips.... so I would say that actually in simulations tires have too little change of grip level when transitioning from peak angles to full slip.
      IMO it is pretty easy to observe IRL how much cars can take on turns before starting slipping, and then AFTER that before slipping very hard. There are a lot of variables to that that makes it not that straight forward topic. Tire compounds, the velocities of sliding, the temperatures impact, the way tire rubber shear works, the conditions of road surface, the structure of tire. Besides tire aerodynamics plays quite a big role. The setup of car, the way chassis works and how masses are distributed....
      Coming back to tire. The plain simple ratio of static vs sliding friction does a lot for how progressive and controllable car is at transients of limits. Thats in physical tire models. The problem about giving cars too much high slip friendly physics is that normal good grip needs to be curbed, made worse - so the total grip and thus car pace would remain realistic enough. Some people confuses that with tires sliding too much. No - then tires slides too little, but they slide too early and too easily. Devs might often be inclined to set tires this way, because otherwise, as you say, tires might seem if they are made of hard plastic as soon as they slip, because some tires actually should be this way - developing insane amounts of static friction, and once past peak slip angle the moment whole tire contact patch is sliding no more static contact remains, lots of tire friction goes away within few degrees of slip + if aero stalls and it is high speed, it will be unlikely to recover this car without impressive reaction and evasive action on point.
      Have to look IRL driving footage, usually it is simply visible how fast these tires speak at over the limit. Unfortunately sometimes simracers want a tire that performs like most modern wide super soft racing radial slick, that at the same time would be as porgressive and controllable as narrowish 60s bias ply hard compound tires. Not to mention also that modern cars also are heavy on downforce, and downforce has a tendency to stall too on high yaw angles, resulting in even crazier grip losses.

    What would draw me over from iRacing or would make it the best Single/Multiplayer sim would be the following:
    1) Improvements in VR without the need for top of the line hardware
    2) Improved and accurate incident assessments. i.e. another driver contacting you should not result in you having an incident point assessed. This happens in iRacing a lot.
    3)A true AI Steward. One that can accurately evaluated an incident and determine who's at fault realtime and then perhaps assess penalties for the at fault driver such as: drive through, next race grid penalty, financial/safety rating penalty, etc based on the rule that was violated.
    5)Accurate and realistic FFB model. Ideally the ability to load the correct FFB setting/profile for the specific vehicle that accurately replicates the feeling of the real car. Today us sim racers still have to guess what the appropriate FFB strength and FFB characteristics by tuning certain wheel base parameters. I want to load a profile based on my wheel base and get a realistic idea what the real wheel forces feel like when driving. But if the user does want to tune they can.
    6) And of course all of the features like iRacing already has i.e. accurate weather physics. Speaking of weather the ability to get realtime weather from perhaps nearby weather stations.

    You could make such a variety of events like a targa florio or a touge competition or a hillclimb or rally, ovals or anything the open world can take and keep the game alive
    Obviously it will be super pvp
    oriented but it would be fun to start with a lvl 1 slow car like a mazda mx5 or and fictional slow car and built it through quests crafting and genrally pve stuff, being able to sell and exchange parts or livery through an auction system

    Ian Bell, I'll buy it if PS5 PSVR2 support! and I will definitely stop considering buying Asseto Corsa Evo. I am totally with your vision, VR, good multi and good single modes, all I heard from this video is what Im a looking for a very long time. Do it ! I want even be your PS5 VR pro tester !

    I-Racing weather system is a must have!

    • @thatfirstone
      @thatfirstone 2 месяца назад

      Is their weather system good? From what I know about iRacing, the guys at iRacing aren't very good at anything besides marketing, and inspiring fanboys. Their simulation has been garbage for the longest, and still isn't that great. I mean, iRacing still doesn't even have tyre flex, and their aero simulation needs a lot of work, judging by their GT cars. Project Cars 2 had a very good and highly advanced weather system, and I doubt iRacing's implementation comes close to that.

    Saving mid race feature, to accomplish 24-hour race without staying for whole day in front of pc ;)
    Goals are matching my expectations, we'll see how end results in future.
    Currently the best game for me is AMS2, because its improvement from PC2.

    Would be good to see a sim that focuses on retro cars and series. Outside of Assetto Corsa mods and Automobilista 2 there is very little and in those I'm not sure how accurate the handling and quality control is. I've got an AC mod of the entire grid of the JGTC 2000 season, it would be amazing to see something like that but with the resources of a whole studio behind it and a better idea of what the cars actually handle like. Might seem niche but those cars and liveries are iconic in Gran Turismo so could get some serious interest.

GTR2 was the first sim i owned that for me properly into sim racing, and project cars 2 definitely pulled me further into soon racing, i know i shouldn't get my hopes up yet, but i can't help but be excited and have high expectations for this title

    If they can port well to PS5 and PSVR2 they can have my money now.
    They don’t have space for a proper gaming pc set up now with kiddies etc so that is what I’d really like.

    It's actually quite simple what it takes:
    Hardware:
    VR support
    Full motion support
    Muti Screen Support
    PvP:
    Fair ranking and ranking for AI
    Realistic license (focus on NO crashes)
    Racing based on license than ranking not vice versa
    Group league where at least once a year wipe is made for the ranking within the group ( See real soccer league in Germany )
    Multiplayer:
    Easy to set up multiplayer server
    Fill up races with AI for missing drivers
    Software:
    very good AI
    Several car classes, open wheel and sports cars
    All known tracks
    Own liveries
    Good graphics
    Mandatory that you can only drive from the cockpit view
    NO addons allowed (all same condition)
    different setups only from the manufacturer for all (same conditions for all drivers) NO custom setups
    Physics:
    Laser scan tracks
    Realistic physics
    Realistic sound
    realistic force feedback
    It can be that simple and all others would be history ....

    Assetto Corsa somehow makes every car feel at least twice less powerful than it should be. For example, some random 400hp car barely spin tyres in a straight line on 2nd gear, this just drives me nuts as this still the best sim out there...

    • @memememine1
      @memememine1 2 месяца назад

      @@viktorianas that's funny I find that some cars have too little grip. For example I used to own an e90 m3. In game the e92 m3 spins more than mine ever did. And I only ever ran regular tires on it (pss and ps4s)

    • @viktorianas
      @viktorianas 2 месяца назад

      @@memememine1 you are probably talking about lateral grip, but I am talking about longitudinal, 200hp cars in real life destroy tyres in 2nd gear with brutal clutch release, in AC is just a short spin and that's it... UNLESS you go drifting or sideways, this physics issue is mostly irrelevant in racing though. Here like in this video is IMPOSSIBLE for me do in AC... ruclips.net/video/0GYey8rjtko/видео.html

    What Ben Colling said is the biggest issue with iRacing tires since the very beggining and they refuse to fix it. At this point I could even go as far as to say they cant even fix it, its been broken for 15 years. He said its a problem with sim racing but no, thats a very specific iRacing problem, AC is not like that, rF1-2 isnt either, AMS1-2 isnt. What pisses me off even more are the clown fanboys who defend this shit like they are iRacing shareholders or something, its a literal cult, especially on their forums. Meanwhile everyone with more than a single braincell aggrees that it is a massive issue, you literally cant go over the limit, if you do you will be sent into an uncontrollable slide and then spin with zero chance of recovery, thats not how cars and tires work, there is no defending that shit...
    Any game that has realistic on limit behaviour already clears the driving part of iRacing by a long shot. Its fucking baffling to me how the hell is it even possible that there is still no competition for the online part of iRacing, I would honestly drop it immedately, it pisses me off how expensive it is, how they refuse to fix 10+ year old ongoing issues, their garbage netcode, their randomized damage model and on and on. AC Evo, these guys, at this point anyone, I don't care, just please get it right and force some competition that moves things forward.

He promised a bunch of stuff for Project Cars 3, kept bragging how it was ten times better than PC 2 in every way etc. In the end, we got one of the most disappointing racing titles ever. I'll wait until I play this one and see for myself. I suggest you sim racing fellas do the same.
