You can think what you want of Ian Bell, but starting a new risky sim adventure (initially with he's own money) is quite admirable. Other game dev veterans would have called it a day and gone to other pastures...And the fact that many of his former employees are in that adventure is quite telling

Especially that competition is getting fierce in 2024, AC Evo alone is a huge problem for everyone else.

I was working for Ian Bell for about 16 years as a track artist. Our paths separated few years ago but I still think that he is one of the best bosses I ever had. He always kept his word and he was taking care of us when things went sideways. I just wish him (and the team) the best!

No matter what you think of Ian and his endeavours, there's no doubt that he and his team changed the game and set standards for SimRacing with ProjectCARS even with the niggles, and I for one am glad that UE is no longer being used, it just doesn't suit SimRacing at all.
Happy to hear confirmation of car expansion, it's too easy to forget motorsport history as younger generations come through. For example, one thing that never bothered me about pCARS3 was the lack of pit stops, many don't seem to realise how many race series DON'T/DIDN'T use pit stops and I for one always found them boring (In-game AND in real life/Karts/British MOD saloons/ThunderSaloons/Tarmac Rallying.) I just want to race to the flag and enjoy the joiurney there, side by side with others. (They are of course needed but still...)
Regards the physics/realism, pleased to hear this as well! I'm really hoping more than anything that Straight4 can actually produce realistic 'Slow speed' physics, this is where every single simulation out there falls on its arse. This and throttle/brake mapping/torque.
PS: Opel MANTA 400, especially in tarmac rally spec please Ian so I can relive days gone? Either way, looking forward to it especially having won games for life. ;-)

GTR 2 is still my favourite sim game, far better and more realistic lap times than Project Cars 2. Don't know why EA, Codemasters and others make so many non-real fancy games that ruins racing passion. GTR 2 was great and POWER & GLORY was even better. Thanks for your time and great interview with detailed questions ❤

It was not called Project CARS Sideways, it was called Project CARS Revolution. "Project Sideways" was a jokingly suggested name for a rally prototype ("sideways" because rally, obviously) that never went into production. If you look at the MadBox concept images that Ian released it actually says "Project CARS Revolution" on the blue ones, that was meant to be our little teaser.

  • @danardisimracing

Good to see this is back on track after those silent months. Interesting tie-up with the new publisher too.
I have a lot of time for Ian's projects as the PCARS 1 and 2 games were my first entry into more serious sim racing vs 'racing games' as it were. Aside from the force feedback implementation which I think had it's issues, the games hold up very well as simulations even now. Complex tyre, suspension and damper models plus the era-defining weather system. Not all the car and track assets were of the same quality which was another small gripe, but overall I think it's looked on very fondly and many took the same path as myself afterwards to titles like ACC which built on what PCARS had done.
Looking forward to seeing more of PMR now that it's back under way more publically.

I know this would never get an exact answer at this early stage but my main interest in motor racing games always centres around the content; namely what tracks, specifically obscure ones, are going to feature? The oddities in games like Automobilista and going back a few years in Race Pro and Toca Race Driver 1 were what those games had over everything else on the market.
Nowadays every racing game features Circuit de Catalunya, Silverstone and maybe somewhere like Red Bull Ring which really doesn’t set my pulse racing…

I'm open to it being good, but after all of Ian Bell's hot air (to put it mildly) around Project Cars 3, it's very much in a "I'll believe it when I see it" space. Had a lot of good times with PC2 back in the day but Bell's burnt out just about any goodwill or benefit of the doubt with fans.

PCars 1 and 2 are great games. Yes, they have some flaws but they delivered some of the greatest simcade experience out there. The LiveTrack system alone is still un-matched, and is currently used by AMS 2.

    • @JZStudiosonline
      @JZStudiosonline Месяц назад +2

1 is still pretty rough, but genuinely 2 is by far the most complete race sim to date. It has single player, seasons, weather, live weather (until the API broke), time of day, night, 24 hour races, AI that's mostly functional, in depth vehicle tuning, default setups that aren't ass, multiple classes and interesting cars, decent track variety, VR support, triple screen support, decent wheel support, dynamic track surface, etc.
Most other sims are missing a LOT of those features, and PC2 actually drives pretty well too. Hell, it even has rally stages including snow and ice.
Like what else did you want from it?
