- Racing against the AI in your favorite simracing titles or racing games can be fun, but sometimes it breaks the immersion when it fails. We thought it was time for a deeper analysis with different categories to see what the status of "computer racers" is on track in seven major racing titles in 2024. Feat. @EmreeRacing

Do you prefer to race against the AI or other players in multiplayer modes?
I love myself a casual AI race, mulitplayer is like Call of Duty, you have to be ready for 'people', people with bad connection and also bad tempers. Divebombing doesn't happen in AI races and if you, just like me, get enough enjoyment from AI, I would recommend AMS 2. AMS 2 really has strong AI that fight for positions. Gran Turismo is a good second for me because you have Sophy AI. You basically teach it your race crafts and it tries to tackle your style depending on your difficulty level
Coop! Do a Co-op List! 1. AMS2 2... um... we'll see what LMU does for this. 3. Rent a server?
Both. Online racing is more demanding mentally obviously, so not always in the mood for it. AI racing is a good way to just chill and practice your racecraft without the competing aspect.
im 40+ casual gamer and dot'n have time for online so good AI is very important for me.
AI. I have so little time to race that I need to be able to race what I want when I want.
ACC’s AI is awesome if you like getting pit maneuvered on constantly.
You got me in the first half
and its also amazing to not have any competition because they just don't battle you at all
Raceroom adaptive AI, you have to run 3 races in a class for the adaptive AI to be correct. So you will run a couple races with it way off before it locks in to the correct difficulty.
Emily is such a great presenter. Speaks naturally, intelligent and knowledgeable. Such a breath of fresh air for RUclips content.
once you pass a car on ACC it just gives up and backs off out of sight. terrible A.I
I race against Sophy all the time, its great way to find out how fast are my builds. Sophy is not very competitive in BoP races, but it is very capable in 500 - 700 PP road car races. If I win against Sophy in a road car (without BoP) I know I will dominate online lobbies with that tune.
All the time? How do you race against Sophy in cars, races and tracks where it's not available?
@@dazonyt8094 "All the time" can also mean often.
Honestly GT Sophy is there as a sneak peak to be released in GT8 probably, but as far as we can use it, it's great.
You can also see a few videos of it racing the fastest drivers on Grand Prix Turismo TV and it's impressive.
Gran Turismo having by far the best AI, but that you can only race against in a very limited and specific capacity is the most Gran Turismo thing ever.
Similar to how GT7 weather physics are awesome but also only available on a few tracks 💀
It's still work in process, so I kinda understand that. But the worst thing is that the normal AI sucks.
Agreed, Sophy has various levels of difficulty, and even elite drivers have trouble beating it.
Nope... in GT the ai are running on rails...
iracing ai is really good
Which is surprising considering the nature of their service! -Michel
Yeah, shame you've got to pay a subscription to use it
@@Stfguacthat's a positive about it. Keeps the kids away.
@@saffaboy2007 What does that have to do with racing against AI?

Ams2 has the best feel for me when it comes to close racing with AI. LMU is a lot of fun for that, too, but unfortunately, there's not as much content as ams2 has yet.
agree
AMS 2 ? U mean AI crashing into u all the time when trying to overtake you in impossible places and u even can't avoid it when you know its coming...
@@sebq998 sounds like a hard skill issue
@@Wyn3e skill issues ?? When AI tries to pass me at immpossible and not logic places because of their unreal physics while driving ie. Sauber c9 flat out at "Bunreville" or racing Indy at Indianapolis when u cannot correct your race line... its jus reckless AI driving.. not sklii issues.
@@sebq998 seeing how everyone is loving AMS2 AI including myself... it's a 100% skill issue
I guess I am just a lucky PC owner. I have not had an issue getting any of these titles to work properly, excluding GT7 which I do not own. The hate towards LMU kind of shocks me, I find this to be a very good title and I think the AI in this game is quite good. I imagine that if LMU gets the opportunity to be a finished product, it will be a must have piece of software. At the age of 75, people do not need a senior simmer like myself driving in on-line races with my turn signal on through out a race, so I race off-line vs. the AI exclusively. I would like to see all games put more emphasis towards a real active AI, but that is just the rantings of an old man. Your articles was a fair look at the different titles, I just wish you had not come head on into configuration issues, that most likely shaped your opinions.
AI in LMU actually has 3 settings - skill, aggression and spread. So you can actually set what's the percentage difference between the best and the worst AI driver.
Good video for the introverts among us though 👍🏻
on your F1 adaptability footage: to be fair, that was magnussen...
Nice comparison.
Best AI - definitely AMS2, that is my go to sim offline. Online ACC but it has horrible AI very track depending, sometimes AI is raceble at best but there is no fun in this. Heard iracing AI is good but I don't consider iracing a sim worth sinking into as it doesn't simulate tires properly at all.
Oh wow...Le Mans Ultimate is broken....what a shock...
I like the emoji gameplay feature in GT7 to give you feedback on the AI's attitude.
Hi! Love the video! What's the tracks on 12.47 minute (open Wheel cars)
The problem I’ve had with LMU is when you’re passing say a GTE car in a hyper car the AI will defend like you’re passing them for a place. Even on straights when there’s no reason for them to move over as you’re lapping them to defend
I've never enjoyed racing against AI as much as in Grand Prix 4. Unpredictability, fighting side-by-side. Out-braking. They were doing everything.
You can also have custom ai files in Ams2, very usefeul if youre doing a formula season. Makes each car on the grid drive differently and better simulate the drivers you wouldve been going against
I love iRacing AI and how much you can customize, but do agree with you about iRacing having a difficult setup. I guess it's trade off for how much you can do with iRacing AI, but they definitely need to come up with a better UI layout for it.
AMS 2 AI is very dependent on the track but when it all clicks it's really good. In multi class raced it does not really work though.
yeah, ams2 ai is really hit or miss depending on the track, on suzuka they basically always take to the grass on turn 1 when you're side by side and they take your position since they still have grip on grass (lol ai physics), when it works it's pretty good but the usual ai shenanigens are fairly common in this game still.
Feel like Sophy in Gt7 is a demo version of it.
They probably will release a fuller version of it later in the games lifespan or in Gt8. where you can customize it or use it to do a few stints in a long race.
I enjoy the AI in ACC very much. Especially how the lapped cars get out of the way, they know and respect rules while also race each other. It's a realistic, lively feeling going against them.
You left out Forza Motorsport though, love to hear your opinion. 🤣
i always tell myself ill run some ai races in iracing to prepare but i never do, i just jump into the online races
I have tons of fun experience with AMS and ACC.
I have not used all of the titles listed but I have raced all of the SimBin titles before Race Room took them over (GTR, GTR2, Race07, & GTL). I also have AC & ACC, pCars 1 & 2, rFactor 1 & 2, and AMS 1. The best overall experience that I have had though is iRacing. Be it racing online, AI, or Time Trials (which I do most of the time). The AI is VERY hard to get right but it will also go down to my level of racing which is towards the back (Division 8 or 9), this will at least give me a more positive result instead of trying not to be dead last.
@Overtake_gg.....Great video but I was wondering what your opinion is when comparing f1'23 to F1'24, which do you think is better and prefer to play !?!?
I almost only race against AI because when I have time to go onto the simulator I want to choose a track and car combo. Have all the sims (for PC) and think all have their pros/cons with graphics, ffb, immersion, etc. So for me there is no one is better, it really depends on what I am going for on a specific day.
Speaking only AI as this video is about that 😅
I find Iracing to be the best and the O.G AC to be the worst in terms of racing the AI.
But do agree with you on the points you mention
Thank you for this great video 🎉
Yay single player getting some love in mainstream sim racing videos! Thank you!
I don't have the consoles, so GT7 I've never tested but always heard good things about Sophy, sucks to hear it's in limited content/modes/etc. LMU doesn't count for similar reasons in my books, because you currently can't do more than a single race weekend (same issue in rFactor 2). AMS2 has been my go to for single player experience, mostly because how it's fairly easy to build your own custom championships (AC has this too, but never liked their AI or the overall feel).
On the side note... I'm a big dirt oval fan, so if/when iRacing adds AI to their dirt oval content I'll renew my iRacing subscription and happily go between AI racing and when I have time/focus/energy do some online there too. Because for dirt oval fans, we have basically zero other modern sim options on PC (and they don't seem to be interested to release World of Outlaws on PC)
Too bad that RF2 wasn't in the test. I had loads of fun with it on Riverside International Raceway in sports cars from the 60s with semi-aggressive AI at 100%. To me, the AI behaved almost human like.
Yeah I remember having a lot of fun with RF2 AI, sometimes they would occasionally make mistakes too.
I've always had great experiences with both RF1 and RF2's AI. As long as you set the skill level high enough its a good challenge.
If I had to play F1 24 my eye would also twitch like 1:16, ahahah, but interesting video, for me R3E AI is the go to for some offline racing!
iRacing’s AI is pretty weird. I actually was just doing some AI GT3 racing at Bathurst. Turns 4-9, they’re so slow. They’re pretty good through the esses but they always rocket out of Forrest’s Elbow. The AI seems to always brake early. Sometimes they’re slow on the straights, sometimes they’re weirdly fast. If you’re behind them at Eau Rouge, they’re slow, but if you’re in front of them, they’ll hang on to you no problem. If you make a pass on the AI the completely back off. They may catch up and fight with you later but they always fall back on the pass. It’s pretty difficult for me to get a consistent AI race out of iRacing.
Yep, F1 24 ai is awesome, with the cars never running out of ERS and constantly using it, and getting beaten by Haas in a straight line speed. They are also basically stuck to the racing line, so if you dare to go for an inside overtake going into a corner, they will just turn into you. Mhm.
Gotta say I'm actually surprised there was no clear winner here, mostly as there's often huge bunfights as to which games AI is better (no surprises there tbh).
So it's actually refreshing and surprising to see someone who does play them all (or most of them at least) say outright they're all pretty much the same.
I only race AMS2 out of them all so can't comment on the other games. In fact the only other games I've played recently are FH5 (with it's rubberbanding AI) and Forza Motorsport with it's utterly incompetent AI.
So bad I actually posted 2 vids of FM AI at max settings and AMS2 AI after someone in the forza forums suggested the FM AI was one of the best out there...
When I linked the vid they immediately suggested "Yeah but it learns from the player and will improve over time..."
That's NOT what we were lead to believe by Chris Esaki himself during their FM7/FM23 AI direct comparison who stated in no uncertain terms...
"Forza's new AI is self trained and has completed 1000's and can use multiple racing lines at each track.." or at least that was the gist of the blurb he spouted, whilst showing it to be 13 seconds faster in a single lap at maple valley compared to FM7's unbeatable AI.
You tell me does THIS look self trained???
ruclips.net/video/3NlpCnDgIMk/видео.htmlsi=g-Zx7aSnKj3-KL_8
Even the highest difficulty AI couldn't even match real world GT3 laptimes in the GTE class, in fact the 2018 GT3 24 hours of spa fastest race lap was a 2:19.464. Plus only a handful of the AI cars in that race cars could beat the entire field of these GTE "max AI" drivers....
VS AMS2 AI at 100% and max aggression, and they'll go upto 120%
ruclips.net/video/aAkI8jhMgos/видео.htmlsi=t6cRt9527ey8bHrb
Only the 3 slowest AI drivers were slower than the fastest 3 GT3 laptimes set in 2018...
Back on topic though...
I have tried raceroom but that was over a decade ago so would hardly be relevant comparing to the one game I'm playing just now.
Regarding AMS2 though? I agree with the vast majority of your points, they're pretty good in most respects apart from their habit of braking far far too early, almost as if they're using the racing line braking zones which to me seem set for a wet race and the racing line doesn't change for a dry track.
There is now a facility to create custom AI files with 15 parameters (17 including name and nationality) that can be adjusted with ranges from 0.001 to 1.000.
Aside from nationality and name these are the adjustable options.
Race skill
Qualifying skill
Aggression
Defending
Stamina
Consistency
Start reactions
Wet skill
Tyre management
Fuel management
Blue flag conceding
Weather tyre changes
Avoidance of mistakes
Avoidance of forced mistakes
Vehicle reliability
As with iRacing there's options to just download other peoples custom AI files, from your own channels website no less lol. Not many to be had right now but that'll change over time.
Sadly there's no in game method of adjusting all this like you showed the short sped up footage of the iRacing AI parameters.
Creating your own custom AI file in AMS2 instead involves editing an XML file outside the game and a lot of testing if you want real world racing performances and laptimes when say, trying to recreate ultra accurate laptimes for the Shumacher or Senna F1 eras for example.
I've heard GT7 fans raving about Sophy and I'm quite shocked at how limited it's use is.
Though it does sound like what all games really SHOULD have from the outset..
AMS2 is my choice for serious racing, but for a relaxing time i use F1 24.
It's tough to say really. From my experience AMS2 and Raceroom are the standouts. I have not played iracing or GT7 single player races so cannot comment on those.
ACC AI are quite passive and easy to navigate. The most fun and challenge I've had are for sure AMS2 and Raceroom.
Do any of the sims have the option to do endurance races with AI doing some stints for you?
There is an option and key binding to hand over the car to the AI in rF2 and also LMU I believe. Not sure how good this would work for a full stint though! -Michel
Agree, Sophy AI is (currently) the best racing AI on the market. The only thing, however, is Sophy has become very aggressive, recently. It's divebombing and pit maneuvering me a lot more than when it released. I wonder if it's drawing from online data like the Drivatars supposedly did in the Forza, series? Regardless, the dynamic nature of Sophy's racecraft cannot be beat. I, like everybody else, hope it expands to more races and careers in future updates, and is the default AI in GT8, of course.
thank you Emily, you are the best!
I think iRacings AI is the best. I regulary use it to train for races and i sometimes forget its AI im racing. The difficulty band is amazing if you dont know what pace you have at a particular circuit
AI has always been a pain. As you noted even in the same sim different classes can vary a lot at the same track. But at least even the worst AI is more consistent than what you get racing online against other people! 😃
The best AI for me is whit no doubt Raceroom, because the realistic behavior, and GT sophy is fast but it can´t overtake in certain circumstances and is really predictive.
The potential of AI in iracing is the highest. They must have the most data to build AI behaviour from.
iRacing setup is easy, you just click all the buttons to see what they do and then do magic with it
ac can be decent. it depends on the car and track though. it does all of the right stuff if not too aggressive on 100
The first question is Is it really AI? Eg a learning model. If say iRacing had real AI it has a massive amount of user data to learn from. Sadly when we say AI its more accurately computer controlled. Maybe with AI models becoming more accessible we may get real AI. Am I wrong in assuming its not real machine learning AI?
Unless explicitly stated AI in video games aren't a product machine learning. The term AI has been used in video games before deep learning algorithms were a thing, so it's not like video game companies are intentionally misleading their audiences by using the term.
'AI' in video games has a different meaning, long before modern LLM's, which aren't real AI either.
sophy 1.0 - especially 1v1 - was incredible but the new 2.0 is way less competitive
Since I raced online with others, I never raced with AI again.
I remember Race 07 AI being incredible. These days, I'd say iRacing wins for me.
I can not get my wheel to work in ams2!😂
For me LMU and AMS 2 are the best AI to race against
For me, it´s iRacing. I prefer AI, because you can restart the race whenever you want. 😀
Imo f1 has always had the best ai, the ai defend properly although some previous entries have had slightly better balance and closer to a player. this year is weaker than previous versions of the f1 ai with my favourite being 2019. Acc also has decent ai imo
Original AC with CM and mods like for example RSS has a good AI I think, but my favourite is still AMS2 even though puddles don't exist for the AI. But why isn't Forza Motorsport, a love letter to motorsport, and its wonderful AI that learns from millions and millions of racers that play and will play it around the world, on this list? If F1 24 is on this list it could very well have been.
Bravo! I personally prefer Automobilista 2 above all the rest! And still, the 1.6 update has to come! So...
If you do GT7, you have to do Forza Motorsports too. I'd like to know which of these two has the worse AI. I don't have a PS so I haven't played GT7, but FM's AI is pretty bad compared to the hardcore sims you rated.
RF2?
Overtake just ain't the same as RaceDepartment.
Obviously not GT7. But let's watch the video, may be there is worse 😅
[Edit] agree with you... Sophy is barely a demo very limited in terms of gameplay options. But it is weird, on some events AI is extremely dumb, and on others it can be decent. In the end the most fun I have in GT7 is to race against friends in a lobby.
Simbin's old games like GTR2 eat these for breakfast if we're comparing AI.
AMS2 or Iracing for me.
Le Mans Ultimate and rFactor 2 have the best AI in my opinion.
And now, just for laughs, let's score Forza Motorsport 2023 - the title with by far the worst AI I've ever seen!
dark green nails in honor of off tracks now and then only spurs the ai on.
I been playing single player racing games for a long time. Best AI I've raced against...Project Cars 1, Project Cars 2 followed by ACC. I am a huge F1 fan, but the codies games are bad.
While I like LMU a lot, I think the AI is horrible. It completely ignores where you are, Hypercars are ridiculously slow in corners, at the same time they would just crash you regardless of what "lane" you are in next to them .
I think wheel-to-wheel racing is the most fun in ACC, so much that I would enjoy not even overtaking, just sticking behind 2 cars and see them battle out.
In Automobilista 2, there is this weird "train effect" when 2 cars move almost as if they were stuck together. Not in the cool "slipstream way", but literally just running the exact same truck without the smallest deviation. It is a very immersion breaking sight.
In iRacing the same level is very inconsistent. I get smoked on Sebring by the same AI I can beat by +1 lap on Watkins Glen.
F1 22 and AMS2 has by far the best AI. They actually "race" against you properly by both going for defensive and aggressive moves in places where it makes sense - and what is just as important is that they are capable of regularly making fairly realistic mistakes and don't just drive perfectly lap after lap after lap like in ACC for example.
Gp4
I liked this video but struggled to watch because of the flickering pink light
Sorry to hear that! We have to figure out a better shutter speed with Emily :D -Michel
I was playing moto gp 2020 today because of the sale, but the ai is pretty bad, they rear end me all the time
They realy just skiped normal ac ai how 😓
Do you think AC has a remarkable AI? -Michel
@@OverTake_gg Its not the best, not the worst but is a game that is heavily played and set out a benchmark for others to grow from. I thought it would be there, especially with how much you can mod for AI if you want.
Because the standard AC AI is absolutely braindead. This is why there are so many custom AI mods.
"AI" in original AC actually stands for "Artificial Idiots".
@@larryhaines7109 with mods its realy doable
iRacing.
Sophi is like on an entirely different level but you can't really do much with it. It's a shame. Maybe hints of what's to come.. nobody has any idea what polyphony is doing because they sure as hell are not paying attention to the online racing. Nobody at polyphony cares or is even paying attention to Gran Turismo 7. Who knows what they are doing.
I’m surprised Sophy is slow. Recall you and other World Tour drivers struggling to beat Sophy in the beta release.
They toned Sophy down for the public release. -Michel
We just ignoring the Forza Motorsport exists now? I mean don’t get me wrong it’s AI is absolute Dog Egg but would be nice to at least acknowledge its existence haha
Many of us here we're really disappointed with FM, the bad AI, bad Nordschleife and unfulfilled promises are part of it. We might have to re-visit it after they have done a lot of updates! -Michel
@@OverTake_gg Ah yes, the infamous Nurburgring trees… but to be serious i get what you are saying, and the AI is about as good as a cat flap on a submarine, but i do think you are doing quite a big dis-service to the racing community but not even giving it at least a “dishonourable” mention.
I would hazard a guess that it has a larger regular user base than R3E yet that got a mention.
I’m just saying you guys might not like it or enjoy it, but lots of people do and not including it kinda makes it feel like you are saying it’s not a real racing game.
Trust me no one knows FM issues better than FM players, parts of it are beyond idiotic! BUT for some people it is the best they can do, FM is THE most cost effective way to get into sim racing, £300 console and £15 a month for the entire game pass library including FM and FMH, and you are basically discounting anyone who plays it as not playing a racing game?
@@Blownpistonmotorsport We still include FM in our videos, last time here, we're it was included, but not RaceRoom. ruclips.net/video/kzoWCA3j_ZI/видео.html
