- Drivers view of a Porsche 936 at Le Mans... Amazing 340 kilometers (211mph) run at Le Mans, France... Watch as he passes the slower Porsche Carreras like they're standing still. Driver is narrating in German gear changes and strategy as he makes his way through the course at Le Mans Subtitles in English. Pretty Awesome...
For some reason this old Video gives me a sense of speed like no other. The drivers calm voice as he passes those Carreras like they’re standing still. Wonderful
I could be wrong but it sounds live an overlay audio, probably not live audio
Absolutely. I was going to pontificate about not parking your Carrera on the Hunaudieres. :)
This is definitely a Martini sponsored drive, but definitely NOT the Martini Porsche 917K that smoked the competition in 1971. This is Le Mans 1977, and this is the Group 6 Barth and Haywood Porsche 936, car No. 4,. chassis 001. It blitzed everything that crossed its path for 23 hours... Even Jacky Ickx ended up sharing their drive after his own 936(winner in '76 ) took an early nap. He nearly had a total misfire in this car too but Jurgen Barth dragged it over the final hour to win Le Mans, still by 10+ laps over the 2nd place Group 6 Mirage-Renault.
...smoked the competition in 1970... not 71.
1970 was the first win for Porsche
@@therealsharps The Martini 917K (chassis 917-053) entrant No. 22 driven by Marko and Lennep did smoke the competition in 1971, and covered a distance record that stood for nearly 40 years. It was not until 2010 that the Audi R15 TDI plus (chassis 204) entrant No.9 beat this record by only a single lap. Nobody said that a Martini 917K smoked the competition in 1970, it is well known that the Porsche Konstruktionen-Salzburg 917K (chassis- 917-023) entrant No. 23 driven by Herman and Attwood brought Porsches first overall win in 1970, and the nearest Martini Porsche was the famous 'Hippy' art-car 917L in 2nd place.
Isn't it great being awesome... when you hear about this that or whatever... and it's kinda funny...cause in most cases you were there... and some experts try and wing there way thru it
Porsche 936 #4 1977 Le Mans winner..not a 917
+Timinator62
Well stopped, this is a spyder, not a coupé, there not a 917. Plus, don't think a 917 ran in these Martinis colours
Martini Racing, D Porsche 936/77, that came First with Jürgen Barth,D Hurley Haywood, USA Jacky Ickx,B DNS (res) Eberhard Braun, D. The reserve driver Eberhard Braun did not drive during the race.
+Timinator62 LIER! the car its a vw fusca 1200 four-turbo
There were 917 Spyders in CanAm, though this is not one of them
Timinator62 I agree. this car is a 5-speed. 917s were all 4 speeds.
This looks like footage from a 936 at Le Mans in late 70s. 917 successor
"the slow carerras" lol...
Nice video. As other have said its a 936. Great race car. Its funny, the Le Mans track has changed so much since the late 1970's.
Looks more like a 936 to me,not a 917.
You are quite right! This is spider 936, not coupe 917!
You're correct. The only 917 spyders were the 917-10 or 917-30 that were CanAm cars. They never competed at Le Sarthe.
July 2020. It's still not a 917.
@@epistte.....Can you imagine Donohue in Penske's 917-30 "Panzerwagen" at Le Sarth? It held the closed-course speed record of 222 mph for years.
936!!!!!
You have to have seriously HUGE balls to drive that fast.
hahahahaha)))))))
Their massive balls lower the car's center of gravity allowing it to go faster ...
---
but seriously, it's impressive these guys. The old sports cars were more like wild beasts. The skill involved is awe inspiring.
The cars were SO light, and not much protection for the driver if something went wrong........
Eric Larson not to mention not much in the way of down-force, until the 962 came around that is ...
Yep
936 not 917
The guys in the Carreras must feel like they're in peddle cars when this monster fly's by them. Awesome video footage of this legend in action.
When you call Carreras slow you know you're going fast.
This clip allows to almost 'feel' it. Very good. The friendly and calm comment of Mr. Barth is priceless. Thankyou :).
No es un 917. Es un 936, es fácil ver que no tiene techo y el motor tiene turbo.
Das Ding ist nur noch Brutal!!!! 211mph : 340Km/h Ich liebe die alte Streckenführung!!! :)
This track was so much more pretty without all the vegetation that we have now
And it's still a Porsche 936. It was open. The 917 wasn't. The Martini livery was found on the 936 but never on the 917. This footage is from the 1977 LeMans btw.
👍sober mature driver respecting the slower cars, waiting to pass them when safe 👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇲🏁
Supposedly the only way to survive and bring her home in one piece :)
Damn that is fun to watch
This is only excerpt from a video of Porsche at Le Mans in '77. Patrix446 is correct, this is a Porsche 936. Specs for the 936 are: Single turbo flat 6, 2140cc, 540 hp. The car weighs 1540 lbs, and has a top sped of 205 mph. From 1976 to 1981, the factory entered Porsche 936 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times with Jacky Ickx ('76, '77, '81). Various sources give a top speed of 217 mph, I think that figure is for the later spec 1980 cars.
Really nice to see a cool headed response to this. Top speed claims are invariably overstated. The ACO speedtrap figures (the only ones I trust) show this car doing 353 km/h (218.8 mph) in 1979 and then 356 km/h (220.7) in 1981. The ultimate refinement of the 936 was in 1983 when one was clocked at 371 km/h (230 mph), the fastest of any that year but I think one or both of these later variants had closed cockpits. You might know more about it than me. This is the 1983 car:
www.lemans-history.com/imagens//1983/24h83_15_porsche.jpg
That was the Joest version. The Kremer version, called the CK5 looked like this:
www.lemans-history.com/imagens//1983/1983-22g.jpg
Both were 936 chassis and neither had ground effect.
I´m only say one name... PEDRO RODRÍGUEZ.
Pedro, while a great driver, was long gone when this video was made.
He was my Hero.
917 ? that wasn't, because there was no roof. The can am style 917s were not legal because of engine restrictions. In fact that's why Prosche stopped racing 917s in Europe. So what was that?
Que genial, en ese tiempo no estaban las dos curvas en Mulsanne, los autos si alcanzaban velocidades exuberantes!
its 1977 Le Mans the Porsche 936 Gr6 Sportscar Martini Racing
I preferred watching the race in the days before the chicanes were put in on the straight. Trying to slow a race car quickly from such a high speed had an fascinating element of drama.
While it's a nice video, I'm rather sure that it's not a 917 ( i'm no expert ), unless someone did video stability, I could not see any wind buffering. the few 917 video's I have seen ( video stabilized or not ) always show wind buffeting.
Everyone's saying its a 936, so I Googled Porsche 936, and I think they're right. Still nice vid.
the speed difference compared with the "Carreras" is insane
The sound of a turbo charged 6, open cockpit & Martini colors means it's a 936 not an NA-12 917
It definitively IS a 936!
Imagine the whole race with much, much more traffic!!
Porsche 936 not 917
Jacki won 1st overall in 1977 in this car a 936
miss the old track layout
This ain't no 917!
Sorry, but this is a Porsche 936 from 1977.
The good circuit, with none of the BS chicanes that have caused some of LeMans most serious acccidents.
You need to read about this. The chicanes were installed because of driver association pressure to do so. There have been fewer serious crashes since.
The 917 at Le Mans is superb.Never thought I would see on film what I read about in MN 50 years ago about the speed difference on the 5km straight. The drivers were all heroes . When it rained PEDRO was No1. If you were a fan of sports Prototypes you know who I mean.
All cars are PORCHE CARRERAS XD
The Timinator 62 is right: This is the 936. Jurgen Barth never raced a 917 anyway. Besides, The 917 did 240+ miles down the Mulsanne/ Hunaudieres...... and no dreaded chicanes back then! Great video though webgrafix! Thanks.
No it didn't. These are the offical ACO speed trap readings for every year from 1960 to 1990:
www.mulsannescorner.com/maxspeed.html
It is a 936!
Steel balls ...
Oh .. so this is the slower car .. the 936 .. well I imagine a ride in the 917 as popping a Xanax then.
Good to know.
Cmon, you people, the driver is narrating. he is not live, he is calm because he is holding a microphone watching a film like us; otherwise we could never hear him inside a race car.
to the poster of this video this car is not a 917 it is a 936.
Es una maquina magnifica pero no conseguian pilotos por ser muy inestable a fondo .el piloto es imprecionsnte y la maquina el valor de andar asi
Smart driver.........taking it easy on his shifts. The clutch loves it!! cheers
Rodney Hayes .. I noticed that too. He also doesn't touch a single curb. It's a different style of driving.
The car has to last for 24h...
I love the ol open cockpit of 936..there actually my favorite
That Mulsanne straight without chicanes looks awesome, i can only imagine the condition of the top gear on that straight
An Epic ride..
That was the real Le Mans ! Thank for sharing mate !
Doing 340 kph. That would be 208 mph, wouldn’t it?
Awesome car
340knmh in a 936 is probably a realistic speed down the Mulsanne, I don't believe that any 917 reached 395km/h (246mph) down there as is frequently quoted. Donohoe was clocked at 240 in the 917/30 which had double the power.
What I read was:
"1971. In the pre-test, Derek Bell revs his 917 LH engine to 8100 rpm on the highest gear on the Hunaudieres straight. Back in the pits, engineer Norbert Singer calculates the corresponding speed must have been 246 mph/396 km/h.
and
"The 1971 Porsche 917 LH is almost synonymous with the exceptional Vic Elford and his race at Le Mans.
Elford returns to race with Gérard Larrousse in the same car. After intensive wind tunnel testing resulting in the development of covered rear wheels, the right-hand kink at the end of the Mulsanne straight can now be taken at a full speed of 380 km/h."
To me its unbelievable anyway :).
That is absolutely necessary
Nice focus
Até mesmo do interior do carro o som é maravilhoso!
This guy has the balls of a dump truck!
from 0.57..thats breath takingly fast
0:25 it creeps me out to hear german speeling S
and to think, this 936 would be lapped about every ten laps by today's hybrid prototypes.
and to think , this was more than 40 years ago !
Sure. A 917. Alright, and I am a cat.
Incredible skill. Incredible... Porsche!
This is not 917 its the 936 If I remember
boah what an awesome straight
I did not like this course and car in gran tourismo 4 it was crazy. No feel for anything. Super fast, super touchy, brakes predictable. Face for days lol ha ha :D
Didn't sound like a 917.
Seems like this was filmed during a Porsche day and not during a race.
Great footage but a pity its not in HD does anyone know if this is posted in HD anywhere
joke? lol
It's actually a *Porsche 936* Spot the MARTINI sponsorship.
Porsche never raced any open-cockpit 917's at Lemans. The 936 however was designed for Group 5 racing regulations.
Legendry lemans of all time.
Uhh, not the 917. This is a 936.
This is not a 917….concur
Entire comment section: That's a 936!
People, if there are already dozens of comments saying the exact same thing, you don't need to say it also - there's this thing called upvoting.
They need to start programming straight-cut gears sound like the sound from this video into the fake engine noise audio they pipe into today’s car interiors. At least make it an option.
Obviously a 936. The presence of 934s and 935s also rule out the being early enough to be a 917.
molto interessante, un auto che cinquant anni fa riusciva a non scomporsi su una curva a 340 km/h ha sicuramente un telaio molto stabile e un motore veramente indovinato. Bella la spaziatura del cambio.
LoL group C cars went a lot faster than f1 and they did not have traction or stability control so good on them.
ロスマンズカラーは、936では?
toppppppppppppppp
Nice 936
That’s not a 917,it’s a 936,the open cockpit racer.
that 935 looked as if the driver accidentially put it in reverse :D
Let me try !!
This is 936 not 917 there is clearly no roof on this car...
Its a 936.
Its a 936
hope they can do well next year in wec and got webber as a driver! good day mate!
No.4 porsche 936/77
Um, simply put, the dude and car are insane and everyone else looks like they are in reverse 😅
😮😮😮
936
Filmed entirely with a russet potato
Porsche really changed the game.
Back when the Mulsanne was the Mulsanne.
I think this is a Porsche 912, the VW engined, 4 speed 911, not a 917.
936.
Which pixel is the Porsche?
C' est pas une 917 c' est une 936!!!
FAHRT!
THIS IS NOT A 917!!!
@ Red Saltire thats 1977!
I think 936
How fast is that Porsche going down that straight?
Christopher Porteus Just around 330kph would be my guess. Can be wrong.
In the video he says he's going 340kph which is 211mph.
The 917lh4.9 was going 238mph on the mulsane strait in the early 70's...
The 917 LH n°21 set the speed record in 1971 at 246 mph . Only beaten in 1988 by the Peugeot WM P88 at 253 mph .
@@vitakyo982 The 917 never did more than 362 km/h (224.4 mph) at Le Mans. Here are the official speed trap figures from 1960 to 1990:
