  • [EPISODE 2] Adam gets the lowdown on one of the most insane racing cars in the history of motorsports: The Porsche 917/30 Can Am racecar, whose flat 12 could turn out 1,580 horsepower at full boost. Only drivers with massive titanium cojones could race this one.

    1.580hp at the Porsche test bench only, in race trim "just" 1.100hp, but with lock differential, 400 liters petrol, a flammable magnesium space frame -> 0-300kph in 11,3 seconds, I think Marc Donohue never felt more alive.

    An insane car, 0-124mph in 5.2sec and 0-200mph in just under 11sec.

      Porsche needs to make a 1500hp flat 12 hypercar that just crushes the Bugattis. Just make it much lighter than a Chiron and the thing would fucking GO.

  • @turboslag
    @turboslag 7 лет назад +78

    Legend has it that Porsche had horrendous drivability problems with the 917 turbo motor, until they contracted Mark Donohue as driver. The thing would only run cleanly at certain throttle and load positions. So, Donohue was talking to the factory engineers after a test session in an effort to work out the problem. He asked how they controlled fuel'ing in relation to engine speed, airflow and load. To his amazement they said they only had control for engine speed and airflow!!! Bear in mind this was before electronic engine management, the 917-30 had a mechanical fuel injection. So he politely advised them to get some sort of load control which allegedly caused some face palming amongst the engineers! Within days they had designed and manufactured a 3D cam for the fuel pump. Once this system was dialled in, the car then became the utter beast weapon that made it legendary. Donohue was the only driver that could get anywhere near the maximum capability of the 917-30.

    Adam...Interesting you'd mention the state of technology when the Turbo Panzer was designed. Probably one of the last remaining 'slide rule' cars in existence. Fortunate to have seen Donahue at Mid-Ohio absolutely whoop the competitors. Viewed from the outside of turn 1 and back straight, could see the rear tires overrunning the front rotational speed, ie: black tracking, wheel spin as he turned up boost exiting turn 1. An article long ago in Autoweek, Leo Mehl, former comp director for Goodyear tire said Mark was the ONLY driver he'd seen that could utilize the full capability of tires w/o abusing them. Says much about Mark's sense of mechanical empathy, mechanical understanding.

      A spool isn't a differential. It's just a fixed connection point of the driveshafts.
      Where as a differential is not a fixed connection point, hence the name differential.

    • @MyLonewolf25

      Tim Johansson yes but in a WELDED diff
      You lock it up in the same way as a spool
      They are basically the exact same thing except ones just a slab of metal from the beginning and the other you turn the spider gears into said slab of metal

    After all these year's, the CanAm powered flat 12 Porsche 917/30, is still the most powerful race car, ever produced.
    100mph in 1st gear, WOOOOOW!!!!
    The later, Le Man winning 956 cars, driven by Stuck, Bell, Ickx, only needed around 700hp, to dominate the Endurance car championship.
    Amazing, the earlier 917/30 developed, at certain races, over twice the horsepower of the legendary 956/962 cars.
    No wonder they were so dominant in the CanAm race series.

    I've always (since the age of 11) liked the 917 and specifically the 917/30. That's when I read "The Unfair Advantage" and it literally changed my life and started my passion for Porsche and the Porsche way of doing everything. Having said all that, Adam Carolla does a great video. Great job. Liked and Subscribed!

    Can-Am. It could only have happened when it did, but it made the world a better place simply because it existed. If only there were a way to describe a universal safety standard that would then allow a second-gen Can Am (as in build it, bring it, run it) "rules" package and races.

    I still remember watching this car at Riverside race way in California, in the 1970"s. Carroll Shelby was never associated with Porsche, but when He was asked what He thought would happen In a 48 hour race, like Le mans, he said..."No doubt Porsche would win, and probability be the only cars running at the end!!!!

    I'm surprised neither mentioned how hard this little buggy is to drive. There's a vid with Derek Bell putting the coupe through it's paces,and I think at one point he remarks with surprise that not all were wrecked. A real testament to the skills of the brave men who climbed into one of these.

    "What is this ZF?" This "German Porsche engineer" is clueless; doesn't know ZF aka "Zahnradfabrik Friedrichshafen"? A 100 year old German gear, gearbox, auto trans, and steering box/rack including P/S pump manufacturer that is an OE supplier to Porsche, BMW, MB, Audi & Toyota. They have a plant in the US manufacturing gearboxes and suspensions for Ford & GM trucks. In fact ZF has been the official partner of Porsche Motorsport since 2010! He's like my Pops, great at the engineering math but technically clueless. To say he's not a car-guy like Adam is an understatement.

    Sorry but not true. The fastest 917/30 Can Am was Mark Donahue´s. His 917/30 had 1323 BHP only and not 1500 BHP, as stated above. Donahue nonetheless achieved an amazing 436 Km/h and a a 0-100 Km/h (standing start) at 2,2 seconds on the french race track at Toulouse (France). These figures were never beaten. You can also read this record up in the Guiness Book of Records 1985 edition.

    They reckon that they saw close to 1500 hp on the dyno. That may be the case or it could be partly calculation. They said the engine was producing over 1200HP when Donohue set his record at Talladega. They claimed it was a world record speed for a closed racecourse. It was officially a record for the USA at about 380 klm per hour or so. ( 220 odd mph ) Of course Mark would die in a formula one car 9 days later. Faster speeds were recorded at Le man but it was not technically a closed racecourse. Of course, while still not on a closed racecourse GP cars from over 85 years ago were way faster then either. They were screwed up to give close to 450 kph and some claim higher speeds. 917 canam cars and Mclaren m8s are my favorite by far.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 7 лет назад +1

      The engineer said it happened _once_. He's neither confirming it nor denying it. If you believe the internet, that means if it could happen once then it happened _all the time_. According to Ian Bamsey, this test resulted in a catastrophic failure, which should surprise nobody. The original 912 engine (its actual designation) was built from 908 bits. and that engine was designed to produce around 350 hp. On top of that, the unique design of the 912 engine was such that it was quite long and without water jackets, quite flexible. Flexibility in an engine block is a seriously bad thing and these two things were the major limiting factors in the quest for power.
      The second thing everyone needs to know is that torque is _measured_ and power is _calculated_. That means the total output will be determined by a combination of torque and RPM. Despite what he says, you can't just keep winding up the boost pressure to get a 25% increase in power in an engine which is already boosted.
