You think it's silly, and that's fine but remember,.. one man's trash is another man's treasure!!!
Someone told Maynard that he sold his soul to make a record. Maynard answered with, "Dipsit,.. you BOUGHT one!!!" Maynard never denies selling his soul. In fact, he kinda affirms that he did!!!
All I'm going to say is that when you get to Parabol and Parabola.....do not mess it up by not listening to them together. You only get one opportunity to hear something for the first time. Hell....I might have to do a donation just so I make sure you read those requirements. 😅
❤️
Word... Do it!
Send more 💸
Agreed!! Parabol+Parabola should ALWAYS be listened to together just like Wings for Marie pt.1 & 2.
i would Love to see the reaction to the video, its maybe the best Musicvideo ever made, and you get both songs together
Possibly my favourite tool song. Definitely deserves the justice of listening to it properly
I was on a road trip for a wedding in upstate New York when this album came out. We stopped into a record store and bought this CD in Ridgefield, CT. When this song came on, we looked at each other and said "did he just say that?" Some memories will never be forgotten. Love this song.
He said that. 🤣❤
Oh he said that 😂
Had two hour drive to a wedding the day fear innoculum came out... it's the only speeding ticket I ever got. I'm 42.
Tom, Corey and partners involved..true soldiers of the Tool Army ✌🏽❤️
Moments like those are the key to life
The one passage in this song sums up what it's about quite succinctly...
"All you know about me is what I sold you, Dumbf*ck. I sold out long before you'd ever even heard my name. I sold my soul to make a record, Dipsh*t. Then you bought one."
In concert at the time, Maynard introduced this song with "This song is about all our new merchandise."
Pretty accurate, actually.
I think "Schism" should be next.
Well said.
For real dude
Tool has so many great lyrics but this one is near the top.
@@timg7627 Maynard can either be incredibly blunt or incomprehensibly cryptic with his lyrics.
This one was definitely one of the ones where the meaning was pretty cut-and-dried.
Those lyrics changed my perspective on fandom. This song made me realize I don't know my favorite sports ball player, or movie star. Its always good to keep Parasocial Relationships in check.
There's a segment in the song where a barely audible Maynard is literally reading the merch list
I got into tool when I transferred to an all white school and some of the dudes I made friends with turned me into tool. 24 years later, tool encapsulates my soul and vocalized that angsty anger. Its my go to running / work out music. It gets you into a headscape I haven't been able to replicate with any other band
I walk a lot, very late, down a dark, curvy road, hill and river on 1 side, ditch and mountain on other. I love screaming out/singing Tool. When I heard Parabol, I lost my mind.
If you haven't, check out The Humbling River by Puscifer, then hear a Perfect Circle's version
U trans bruh?!
what's an all white school?
Polo: "I really hope this isn't going to be good..."
Everyone: We told you there is no bad TOOL song, just levels of greatness.
The first EP and the first album leave a lot to be desired, but everything from Aenima on is gold in my opinion.
@@richcapoI'm in my 40s and going through a ton of shit. "Undertow" now hits way different and I'm even more in love with it than "Aenima," which I never thought I'd say.
@@jenynz5334 Crazy isn't it...? How you can watch the weather change 🎼
for me there is no question Undertow is their best, i love Opiate as well, its not a whole album none of those songs are skipable for me. Aenima is my 2nd favorite, Lateralus was the first tool album i got and I dont like it as much, still a great album with great songs.
“No bad Tool song”
Sober 💀
On being sellouts, the band asked the label if they could have more artistic freedom. The label agreed. Then Tool doubled down and said if we take even less money from the label can we have complete artistic control. That does make Maynard, Danny, Justin, and Adam THE MAN, in control of their own work and quite the opposite of sellouts.
Every time I have ever seen Tool live they have played this song. The last time I did, I realized Maynard was singing a song about selling out to a sold out show to an audience who all paid good money to be there, and were wearing merchandise that says "Tool" as if it were a label, while he was belting out the lyric "Fuck you buddy" and we all happily sung along. Well played. Love it.
Your reaction to your son humming along to the Descending is pretty close to why we like watching music reactions. We love the music and it just makes us super happy to see people experiencing it for the first time like we did so long ago.
Agree and well said.
It’s official!
Welcome to the Tool Army!
Yes, we’re watching with pride like you felt w your son.
This band can change your life - once you find and open your third eye, which by the way would be the natural progression from HWAP. 👏 🤘💥
@@poncandn1 I would definitely like to see him react to Third Eye
See you all at the bottom of the rabbit hole
Third eye is their best song, or 46&2 love them so much.
Tool possibly at their most “punk”. And not because the lyrics mock the whole idea around the idea of “punk rock guilt”, but Danny is in rare form laying back in the pocket, these drums would be at home in most Vandals tunes. Simple, crushing riffs too.
I really love that this low-key jam sits in the middle of their very progy album that yearns for enlightenment.
It’s cool that these dudes can deliver such simple, strong statements too.
This kinda music is what felt missing in their newest album
@@roadrash2005 I agree. I feel like "The Pot" is the closest thing they've done since that has a very straightforward, in-the-pocket kind of feel, but it lacks anything I would call punk. Tool aren't the first band that comes to most people's mind when they think of punk (understandably), but there's a good amount of Swans influence still swimming in their DNA. They even performed a very straight forward cover on The Ramones "Commando" when they played New York after Dee Dee's passing as tribute.
ruclips.net/video/OPoVqKYJujM/видео.html
i'd say musically, their most punk was on opiate and undertow. this is probably the most straightforward rock song off aenima though
@@FirstnameLastname-nd9wx I hear that, but I think the drumming here is more reminiscent of a lot of 80's hardcore punk. I think Opiate and Undertow have a lot more of an industrial influence from the likes of Swan and Ministry (industrial is downstream of punk, so I think your perception is still perfectly valid).
This is such a great song. I was happy to hear them play it live last year on their tour.
same. it was such a treat to hear this and Pushit live.
Probably one of my most favorite Tool songs. It's such an incredible middle finger to folks that cry "sell out."
On a humorous note, I saw Tool at SDSU Stadium for Halloween (the costumes were epic), and one guy dressed up in a tiny halter top, wig and miniskirt with a stuffed pen!s hanging out that went past his knee. Best concert, best costume. Hands. Down.
In the 80’s there was a movement called “alternative music” that was really only defined by the fact that it was not mainstream but retained a significant following. It was not distinct to a region, style, instrumentation, or philosophical ideal but certain bands were uniquely... alternative. Fans tended to pride themselves on their “ownership” of this fandom trumpeting counter culture as a virtue. Of course, any artist will want a broad audience and as time went on... some of these little known gems broke through. At a certain point (I’d say 1992) record labels recognized that using “alternative” as a marketing brand gave subversive new credence to the same old formulas. Thereafter everything was alternative even if a band made their debut in the top ten. Beer and tacos were marketed as alternative. While the word didn’t really have any cohesive meaning to begin with it now no longer even differentiated between popular music and the obscure. Hipsters had trouble with it. Tool arrived before this transition and developed a cult following but in the race to tap the market, MTV and radio aired ‘sober’ and it was widely accepted by audiences (high school football players and cheerleaders and the like) that wouldn’t likely have heard or cared for the style before the paradigm shift. Since alt rock hipsters felt the music no longer “belonged” to them and could not empathize with audiences outside their circles, they accused tool of selling out.
Saw them play in May and they played this song. Absolutely epic to witness live, especially the drums. A brilliant "diss track"
I say them last February and they graced us with this track as well as Pushit. I was FLOORED (first time with floor seats for tool too lol)
@@ethosfm1262 Ooh floor seats....then you got the glitter/confetti shower! I was so jealous of the people on the floor at my show! 😆
There isn't a bad Tool album!! They are all amazing in their own way!!
This whole album rocks. Try Hush from Tool. They love it in the parking lot at work😂
Lmao reminds me of when I would sit in the office parking lot and blast municipal waste - 12 step program
Swamp Song
Yeah, older school Tool is still my favorite. Hush is great. Opiate too.
Undertow is the album he’s referring to their first studio album, they made an EP in 92 hence “OGT 92 from the first EP” and switched up their sound which was a lot darker and more grunge sounding yet still amazing, and the people that were the OG Tool fans took this as selling out because the album went crazy in the charts and was all over MTV with singles like (Sober, Prison Sex) and this album took an even different direction, which is more psychedelic but also heavy and angry at the same time, every Tool album sounds different then the last one, that’s why they fall under the “progressive” genre because they always evolve their sound and some elitist weirdo fans consider that selling out lol
What's so stupid about that is that the Opiate EP was way more accessible than the entirety of Undertow...hell, Layne Staley jumped on stage and performed Opiate with them before Undertow was in general release...don't matter, I bought Opiate the week it came out and I have loved them since...
@@johnjohn37371 💯🤘🌀
Undertow is badass. Haters will hate.
I've always liked bands that evolve their sound as they grow. Sure, selling out is when you have one major hit from an album, and then your next album ALL sounds like that song. It's catering your art to what sells. Obviously, this is not what tool does. Even the record producers were afraid that Lateralus didn't sound enough like 'tool, (and the added Ticks and Leeches for the record execs) I'm a big Deftones fan, and they've always just made whatever sound they felt like making at the time.
Funny thing is, is tool write and perform a song, THAT is what Tool sounds like. When people get stuck on a single album, or style of a song, that's a Them problem.
@@Onikame exactly I’ll never understand the hate that FI gets either, it’s so progressive and tight, descending truly is one of their masterpieces hell every song they’ve ever made is a masterpiece I’ve never skipped a song from Tool when I’m listening to an album they don’t have one bad song not even one 🌀
I think you're ready for Right In Two. Top 3 Tool song
On Maynard's voice, my take is that he's adding extra distortion in production to add to the image of what you're buying is not real. It also makes him sound mad AF, so that's pretty dope too.
I know Polo doesn't go in blind, so it was great seeing you/him reacting to the delivery and emotion of the lyrics. Puts a whole different punctuation on the song. There IS NO WRONG ANSWER TO "THE BEST TOOL SONG."
Another scream not to miss is Eulogy. Beautiful track + Angry Maynard = Tool 🔥
Absolutely agree that this is one of their best. This has been one of my favorite Tool songs since the album came out
Total banger of a song. So wonderfully crunchy and bizarre. Perfect message delivered brilliantly
Still waiting for Reflection 😁😉
This whole album is what changed my whole world in the late 90s. As a lil teenage hiphopper, this was world shattering. Not sure if u have reacted to Eulogy, H, and Jimmy yet. If not check em out. 🔥
I love watching these reaction videos because it takes me back to junior high when I was listening to it for the first time. Reminds me of the magic. Keep the Tool Flowing please! Check out more from Undertow!
One of my favorite Tool moments is them playing this song live. Because right before Maynard said something along the lines of "Buy our new album so I can afford to buy more waffles".
Yeah buddy! Your son humming to Tool at 6 is awesome! It's good for his mental development ;)
You reminded me of when I was listening to Lateralus in the car with my son who was 8 at the time. He was physically rocking back and forth to the beat and when it was over he begged me to play it again. I was so proud of his ability to express himself and know what good music is.
Check out Puscifer:
The Humbling River
Man Overboard
Conditions of my parole
Conditions of my parole! I second that
Heard this one live… it was awesome…. The 15000 people sang every word..
My absolute favorite song from them. So much aggression! They drew a lot of inspiration off of Kyuss in this track
The breakdown in this song is definitely Tools most heavy riff imo, love it
Seeing this live on their 2022 tour was insane
Sorry to not disappoint you. Hooker With a Penis is a killer track. Tool never sold out - several of their best, and most progressive songs are off their latest, Fear Inoculum. A few more great ones worth mentioning: Eulogy, Third Eye, 46 and 2, Disgustipated...almost anything. :)
He said "I sold out long before you ever even heard my name, I sold my soul to make a record, and then you bought one."
Can't wait until you dive into their sophomore album "Undertow"
I haven't listened to this song in years, but I still love it. I remember when it came out. There are always a lot of know-it-all fans who think they know more than everybody else.
I don’t know that they ever sold out. Wasn’t till recently you could download their music digitally. They didn’t much of their music be used in TV or movies and all their songs are so long the radio doesn’t want to play most of them.
Great reaction, still need to check out Jambi and Adam on the Talkbox mid song, maybe some Eulogy after.
Technically their music has been in tv, movies , documentaries, beavis and butthead, rock band etc. they are played on pretty much every rock station.
Their mtv success is what helped them blow up and for good reason they have some cool music videos. Doesn’t mean they sold out for those reasons, but just pointing out the facts.
LoL yeah. Everything by tool is awesome. A perfect circle as well.
Love this!! Hope you’ll react to Jambi by Tool next. That one and Parabol-Parabola are among my favorites for sure. 👍
I think the entire concept of selling out is ridiculous
Everybody who's ever been in a band want to be successful want people to like their music
Frequently you hear that a band sold out on their second album because they're not as angry
Of course they're not as angry their first album was successful and now they get to live their dream how can you be angry about that
I've been suggesting this video since the beginning next to 46 and 2 and eulogy
Magdalena and 3 libras from a perfect circle as well
I know you'll get around to them eventually and I'm glad to be here to witness when you finally do
You keep being awesome brother and I'll keep watching
Man L take here. Just make the music you made the first time around, so people that wanted that music and made you big get what they pay for. False advertising is annoying as fuck.
I think it had a lot to do with things outside of playing on stage and releasing albums. Things like Maynard touring the country visiting Whole Foods markets to sell his signed bottles of wine with a strict no photo and no autographs unless it’s on the expensive wine.
That and a bit of the pretentiousness puts people off. The latest albums were a bit long winded while you wait for the meat of the song too… this album for example was full of bangers and very little fluff.
Really tool fans are worse than tool ever is though 😂😂😂😂
Some of the biggies you haven't done yet = "Jambi" "Schism" "Parabol and Parabola" "Eulogy"
Hell yeah brother. I was really hoping you did this one. Gotta love a Tool "Diss Track".
I think you're right about pride, I think that's exactly it! I don't listen to much reactions as well, but Tool is my favorite band and I'm so proud when someone new falls in HARD for this band! I was so proud when both my kids first listened to Tool in their rooms ... without me!!
Edit: And Aenima is the best Tool album. Period. Fight me!
I've never found it again, but one old live video I watched them perform this, Maynard opened by saying, A friend of mine was down on some street looking for some live for sale, he got more than he bargained for. Not the exact quote of course but I laughed for quite a while at that one.
When they did this song at the show I went to last year, it got the biggest crowd pop of the night.
Dude the part you rewind at 11:48 is my favourite piece of music in Tool's discography. The chord progression is so damn good.
I don’t know why either - but I absolutely love videos of people discovering TOOL ! Greatest band ever
We're all so divided. You want to share something you enjoy with someone else & you can't. This is a way people can not feel alone. We're listening to something together.
The world is moving in this depressing direction more & more.
People see differences mostly today. They don't look for the light in others.
We need to ask ourselves, where am I in you & where are you in me?
One of my favorites from Tool
I'm always surprised that this isn't more of a favorite of others, but I love it. Sometimes I miss their unbridled rage.
What I love about this song is that he called them out in such a way he shut them down completely. Being a fan for so long you see a lot of their growth, which is amazing and if they did “stay true” then we wouldn’t have more of what they gave us! And I like what you react because part of what I love the most about music is sharing it.
You got the meaning of this song on your first listen! This is easily one of my favorite top 5 Tool songs. Thank you for reacting to it
Been snowboarding for over 15 years and this song and a song from
Ministry = Just one fix, are my go 2 's for pumping me up for my first run always.
Young Maynard’s voice was a force to be reckoned with!
What a great song! So angry! On a separate wavelength, I would like to see you react to Tool's Fear Inoculum. Something tells me that if you love Descending like you do, you will also take to Fear Inoculum!
Speaking of OGT (Original Gangster Tool) from back in '92, on the first EP.... It is titled "Opiate", has 6 tracks and? a hidden track sort of. Anyways, don't skip it. Some tracks were recorded live, it's very raw, very early Tool, so not quite as polished but you can hear the untapped talent. Features their first bass player : Paul D'amour. They are all solid tracks, Jerk-Off, and Cold and Ugly are my favorites.
You need to see this live! Pure Fire🔥 when they're on stage!
This song always sets off the pit. Mega-mosh.
Right in Two is definitely next on the Tool rabbit hole. Magnificent song and lyrics
Jambi is a great song 🎵
Jambi by " Tool"
Jambi
"He was humming to it, and I felt so proud."
That reminds me, 8 or 9 years ago I had my niece in the car. She was 5 or 6, and I had some poppier songs on the iPod for when she was riding with me. I don't remember what was playing, but I had it on shuffle. t.A.T.u. came on, which she really liked, but she asked me to skip it, so I went on to the next one. It was a Dresden Dolls song that she normally liked, but she asked me to skip it again. Then a song from Korn's Unplugged album came on, and that's what she had me leave on. I thought: that's my girl!
You aren't silly Polo. It's a pleasure to watch anyone discover Tool. I'm glad you have and thank you for sharing your reactions with us. :)
Polo GOD DAMN I wish Bob Ross was alive to hear his name and Tool in the same conversation 😆. I'd like to think he would be very proud. The thought of him painting a landscape to this song is priceless. I think he might go outside the lines on this one. Keep up the great work my man!😂
One of my personal favorites. You're reactions are so genuine and you're starting to learn that Tool doesn't have a bad song, just good songs, better songs, and the best songs. Now trust me when I say check out Passenger by The Deftones featuring Maynard James Keenan. I'm going to keep spamming your comments until you do that song.
Seconded
Adding - Know Your Enemy by Rage Against the Machine
It's impossible to narrow Tool songs into a personal top 5 favorites, but this one always manages to squeak in for me. There's just something about it. :)
When I first saw them in 2001 they opened with this song. Maynard was amazing to listen to and it was mind blowing tight.
9:03 that’s why I watch. I’ve listen to this song 1 million times and I have played this song on the guitar about as much and I never noticed that was the melody slow down but here you noticed it on the first listen! that’s why I watch.
I know how much you love them now and you don't think it is possible to like them anymore....... until you see them live. Life changing is all I have to say. I was lucky enough to see them in a smaller venue (Orpheum in boston) which is a completely stripped down version of their arena shows and it was honestly just as bad ass if not more. Enjoy the journey
This is one of their best. It's transcendent.
This has been one of my favorite songs for the last 25 years 🤘😁🤘
This has always been one of my favorite songs from tool
This might be the most straightforward TOOL song that you'll hear. A shallow fan is acting shallow and Maynard calls him out on it. No more, no less.
This is the best TOOL album.
One of the best all round albums in History . It should be listened to as a whole album to just song for song. They truly take you on an emotional journey over 1.5 hrs start to finish
@@ev6808 Agreed. I wore out three physical CDs of this album in high school alone. The digital version I have is the seventh time I’ve bought it.
I bought this album the first week it was out. This was my #1 track on this album at release and still is. I love raw emotion. This track is jam packed with raw emotion.
POLO REACTS, Maynard said he was at the mall and this kid in all designer clothes, holding his soda cup, told him that Tool sold out. Maynard kept his cool, then Tool put this song on the next album.
I LOVE singing/screaming these songs. Parabol is my favorite, my mantre.
Been waiting for this one!!! Loved your reaction!!
It’s a joy watching you discover some of my favorite songs.
This is so great. Watching you absorb it all the exact same way I did 20 years ago🎉🎉😂
If you had a band/song/toy/car whatever that you loved so much that you wanted to watch the joy of others feeling the same way....that's why we watch reactions mostly I believe. I learn a few things along the way usually from the comments.
This is my all time favorite tool song for so many reasons
Tool lyrics often have a sense of humor. 46 and two was a kids song when mine were growing up.
3rd longest scream form MJK.......And this song is one of the reasons he sings in the dark behind the band , cause your here to hear TOOL not just him.
Gotta say... you really come alive to tool more than any other reaction brother. Love that you discovered and love it
I really like that you liked this one. I recommended it in the comments of a previous video. I was actually laughing when you were annoyed that you liked it.
Sorry for double commenting again, but I have to say I love watching your journey into the metal genre and so have to say, Tool sets the bar pretty high for depth of content. Love it.👏👏
I can’t wait to see you react to 46 & 2. Danny goes off!!!
I believe he has, one of his first listens.
Best. Album. Ever.
tbf when you've heard this fifty times his lyrics are clear as day.
That's part of the fun. Like driving out of a fog into clear sunny skies
I was never a big fan of this song until I heard it live a few years ago. After hearing it live it's definitely a whole new song to me. Great video as usual ✌️
My favorite song.. yes I love all Tool.. but this is soooo underrated
You’re not wrong, dude. This is my favorite rocker from Tool. You need to hear Jimmy from this same album too. You’ll love his vox on that.
this is one of my favorites, it just goes so hard. also the drums are unreal, even by Danny's standard.
Tool's first EP, Opiate, was more raw than their later albums, which had more atmospheric and progressive elements, so this song is saying they can still go heavy af when they want.
Hush or Part of Me are good examples off Opiate.
I think my favorite part of this song, is during the transition in the middle, the barely audible vocals buried in the music is Maynard reading the merch list and prices
//"I don't get reaction channels." // It's simple: When you treasure something, you want to share it. Watching another's reaction to something you adore is like rediscovering the song (or whatever the topic). Lastly, insight into the lyrics, or just watching someone understand the first time, is addictive.
When you were saying “I hope I don’t like it..” I was laughing knowing that you were going to dig it. 😂 Great vid.
My wife and I scream these lyrics at full breathe all the time! ❤
When I saw them last March, they played this before intermission and when that double bass kicked in at the end, you could feel that shit in your entire body from the other side of the stadium.
I'm a single dad to my 10 year old girl and she loves all my music including Tool and yes I feel proud. Song comes up and she knows if it's Deftones, Tool, slipknot, SOAD, Rage, Metallica etc. I'm doing something right as a parent.v
14:40 - Try "opiate", title song of their first EP, from '92. And after that listen Opiate², a re-vision of the song they made 30 years later. Which is also the latest song Tool has released. :D
You are awesome, love watching your reactions to Tool. You nail it each time. Keep them coming. 😘🌞🌈
When I first listend this song, I was like "I love Tool but man, I'm not going to like this song, no way!". And now I can't stop playing it everytime I drive no matter who's sitting next to me and I can tell it's not easy when it's your father right next to you in the car, reading the title...
Hooker with pens? Oh, that's an apostrophe! Hooker with Pen's? Pen's what? Wait, is this about Teler?
