      When's the last time anyone bought anything that didn't need work? For me, has to be 2005~6 when i got a Bosch drill. Then it just went down stairs from there. Alignment, repair, modifications to make it work as advertised. Just recently i bought a 6 way blade from Komatsu. Brand new. It did not fit the dozer it was parted for. I had to notch 4 mm off the blade's ears, and i never even thought, to call the dealer to figure things out, i just reamed it out to proper spec.

      @Rob G true, but it also looks like the screened larger rocks could be used on some jobs for drainage stone ( I saw later in the video Andrew also noticed this), so i can see some applications where it would pay. I see more advantage using to screen soil. Around my area high quality top soil is extremely expensive expecially in smaller quantities. This would be awesome if you are not in a big rush.

    After 44 yrs of doing inspection work, I can tell you that the new screening device works well for placing fine material for about 12 inches above the pipe to protect it (filling the entire trench that way would take forever). After that, you could probably get away with your standard procedures with the excavated material to backfill the trench except for some of the 8"-12" rock that would be too big to compact even with a walk behind roller. Even with the fine material in the bottom of the trench, I'm assuming you're going to compact it with a jumping jack or a small compactor of some kind.

    Andy left an absolutely outstanding comment on the owners website, along with a 15 minute video on the owner’s website!! “This thing works great! The big advantage I'm seeing is you only have to handle the material one time. You can screen right where it needs to be. And they sell different size screens for it too. The brush keeps the screen clean and from clogging up, and since its not a vibratory machine, its not shaking itself apart the whole time. You can also screen directly into a truck, dirt in one and your rock into another or wherever you need it."

    This unit is going to take some patience to master. My first impression of an improvement in backfilling a trench would be to leave 2 or 3 feet of bare level ground on the machine side of the trench when digging. Then screen the material so that it flings the occasional bigger pieces onto that side of the trench. Then push the screenings into the trench , completing the backfill with the leftover unscreened material. It'll be interesting watching Andrew perfect his technique in the coming videos.

      Andrew is not one to go buying brand new stuff. I would guess that most of the brand new attachments you have seen have been comps from the manufacturers for the free publicity. AC should disclose it CLEARLY in the video, whether it is promotional item, or whether he paid for it himself, and whether he is affiliated with the company in any way.
      Having said that, I think this machine has lots of shortcomings - doesn't screen very well, larger rocks are being flung from it during screening, especially in the beginning of the process. Even doing one revolution over source material does not complete ensure this not happening. In short, I don't find this screener useful for professional, nor private user.

    Seems to me you could dump 5 yds of pea gravel (or sand) in that trench for a lot less than using that screener.,

    • @RSDX99
      @RSDX99 3 года назад +6

      As an Electrical contractor I would go with 18" of sand first. seems like an interesting toy perhaps for other uses.

    • @TrailTrackers
      @TrailTrackers 3 года назад +11

      @cdouglas1942 : Exactly what I was thinking. Bring in a single load of sand and bed that pipe properly in half the time. That screener thingy is a classic example of somebody spending 5 bucks to save 1 buck.
      Another issue imo is Andrew filling the whole trench with screenings. If you're gonna do this at all, you just need 12" or so pipe coverage, place your locating tape and finish backfill with native material.

    • @guffaw1711
      @guffaw1711 3 года назад +5

      Especially considering how much material is lost due to the screening. It looks like 20-40% of the excavated material was rocks. That volume is missing from the filling later anyway.

    • @josephking6515
      @josephking6515 3 года назад +13

      @@TrailTrackers They don't have sand in their area so they have to get it from another county and pay the extra price as a result. I don't know if you noticed but there is snow on the ground which means any sand is going to be frozen with any melt that has seeped through it. Do you think Andrew hasn't gone through all this and the costings to see what is the best for his customers?

    • @kman-mi7su
      @kman-mi7su 3 года назад +6

      @@josephking6515 Exactly, and over time, it will pay for itself in the fact that every job you use it now you don't need to buy extra materials such as sand or gravel. You can use what is onsite. Plus, those big rocks he was screening out are an extra added bonus to the homeowner, they can be reused for landscape architecture, or if they have a ditch or area where there is a need for erosion control it can be put to use.

  • @valuedhumanoid6574
    @valuedhumanoid6574 3 года назад

    If there was a hydraulically actuated door that once you scooped it up, close it up so nothing can fall out and 100% of the material has to pass through the screen. As it is right now about 90% is being screened. Which is still great. Nice attachment. Clean fill is expensive. This will pay itself off in no time

    What we need these days is a lot more Andrew's and a lot less Wharton (or similar) MBA's. Andrew is a heads down get it done guy using his body and mind to assess a problem, devise a plan to correct the problem, implement the fix with no whining and evaluate the results. Today's mid 30's MBA know everything, are never wrong and always ready to blame some one else for their failures.

    I think you might have bought a dud this time. I'm not sure how you missed it while editing this video together but that thing dumped dozens of large stones out when it wasn't supposed to, any one of which could have shattered that cold pipe if they hit it directly. Maybe its faulty design, maybe it's user error. I don't know, but if used as shown i definitely wouldn't trust it to backfill my pipes when they are cold.
