    The problem with steel tanks failing usually can be traced to condensation build up inside the tank. Most of the cheaper tanks are bare on the inside and therefore rust from the inside out. And it's almost impossible to detect this until it begins to leak. However, if you want to prolong your tanks life, you can have an internal coating applied. If your handy, you can purchase the stuff and diy. It can be a bit pricey depending on the brand and supplier, but sometimes you can't put a price on peace of mind. Just a thought. Great videos.

    I have seen people do crazy things to trucks to use off road fuel ..... moonshine tanks like u mentioned, having a switch between the truck tank and the transfer tank, with a set up like old box Chevy with twin tanks, even getting and old school gas tank that mounts behind the seat like in 60s and 70s . There are cheaters every where. As an electrician I saw a set up where the deceased home owner put a device sleeve in his mast head and tied extra wires in to get free electricity off the service before the meter....been that way since the house got a 200 amp service upgrade in 1979. It takes all kinds.

    100% agree with you on the portable gas cans. Funny part is that they are designed prevent spilling of fuel but in reality they end up causing more spills than with one ones with no valve junk.
    As for fuel storage, I added a hand pump to my house heating oil tank and was one of the best things I did. If you are on automatic delivery you will never run out of fuel for your equipment.

    Get a shaker siphon hose for fueling. You'll never go back to pouring.
    www.agrisupply.com/shaker-siphon-pump/p/105925/
    You just stick the end in the fuel tank you're filling, stick the other end with the ball valve in the can and shake it a couple times... starts the siphon right up and you either let drain the whole 5g tank or you can pull the hose out (or pinch it) to stop fueling.

    I heard of a guy that uses his large dump truck. It has two large tanks. He disconnected the right tank sealed it off and carries dyed fuel for his machines. There are signs and labels on the tank stating that it is for equipment only. the left tank is fuel for the truck. Do you think this is legal since the tank is not connected to the truck's fuel system. It would be like carrying a fuel storage container with him. It saves time when on the job by pulling either one next to the other and transferring directly to the equipment.

    Hello, I'd like to comment on your diesel discussion. I worked in the north both as a class one driver and working for a bulk oil fuel company (Gulf Oil), Stove oil is a lighter product than actual summer diesel and is commonly used in winter when the temperatures are well below zero. Summer diesel is thicker and lubricates much better for climates above zero. In the spring and fall when temperatures fluctuate from well below freezing to say 10 degrees above, we would add a quart of transmission fluid to each saddle tank when it got above zero and refuel at the end of the day with winter diesel (Stove oil). It should be the same in America as it is here in Canada. Ps: Really enjoy your videos and am amazed at how knowledgeable you seem to be.

      Kurt bees - That's because the engineers are people that have never had to precariously hang from a sander fueling the engine at 3am in a blizzard with gloves on and hold a tank for 20 minutes while it agonizingly glugs through some device that takes 3 hands to operate. What ultimately happens is the operator removes the entire nozzle in a fit of rage and splashes and spills fuel all over the place trying to dump it in with no funnel. The answer is, make nozzles with a screw cap that is permanently and unbreakably attached to the nozzle and breakproof vent caps. We've sent men to the moon... this is not an insurmountable design challenge. I bet these "spill proof" spouts have spilled tenfold the amount that the "old fashioned" tanks ever did.

    Agreed, the dolt who designed those new spill proof gas cans should be in prison. What a Gonkulator. I've heard of guys telling the DOT if they find red dye in their diesels that they added some kerosine (which is red ) to keep the fuel from Gelling in the winter time. Best to just pay the tax, the fines are crazy. I know they stop a lot of guys near farming communities and do testing. That guy with the false tank with road tax fuel and the main tank with red diesel was brilliant. I think your tool box goes with your truck. It's always best to look insolvent rather than mr. money bags otherwise it will be fines, fees, upcharges, gouging and goring a plenty.

    Kind of off topic, but this video reminded me of some friends of mine who still had a fuel oil furnace, a few years ago. One holiday weekend they realized they had not gotten their normal monthly fill. Tank was nearly dry, they called and could've gotten an emergency fill, that night....for a fee. Well instead of paying the huge fee that I considered extortion from their supplier, I filled my 150 gallon transfer tank, just like the one you have and took care of them. The fuel guy stopped the following week, expecting an empty tank and a charge to relight the furnace. Ended up with a freezer full of homegrown beef out of that one. 😂 Really enjoy your videos and content, too.

    I just bought a battery driven pump for about 14 bucks from Harbor Frt. Runs on 2 c cells and has about a 30 inch hose. Pump tube Fits inside any conventional fuel jug. it will empty a 5 gal can in less than 2 minutes. The pump part goes down into the tank and the diameter of the hose is about 1/2 in......I am 84 now and cannot lift a full 5 gal and fill my lawn tractor without spilling fuel all over the driveway. You will love it. You can thank me later.

    My dad has a oil tank or oil heated house. One day he happened to be walking pass it and he seen it was leaking luckily, there’s no concrete or nothing under his so he called my grandfather and told him to get a patch ASAP so he sped over with a ratchet strap and a hunk of flexible rubber he came down as my father was getting several buckets filled with oil my grandfather applied the rubber to the spot and put a ratchet strap around the tank and over the rubber fixed the hole so my dad then called Irving (oil company) the guy in charge came bombing in the driveway basically did a hand brake turn ran to the tank with a little patch way worse than what my grandfather put there he laughed cause the patch he brought wouldn’t have stopped it but my grandfathers funky rubber patch did. they ended up replacing the the tank. Just thought it was a interesting story. Wanted to mention it

    • @AndrewCamarata
      @AndrewCamarata  5 лет назад +1

      yeah, when they start leaking, just catch the oil, don't dig at the leak. Get another tank next to it and pump it into the other tank.

    Hey Andrew! love your videos. Just a quick tip handed down from my father with regards to the teflon tape that I've seen you use both for water and fuel. Consider using the "back" of the tape when you're applying it to a pipe or fitting. It works the same way and it goes on easier when the diameter of the tape roll is considerably different than what you're applying it to. Give it a try, it actually works!

    andrew as always i love your video`s. but you might want to revise your advice about diesel fumes not being explosive. (you were using a blow torch in close proximity of the fuel tank) in the right conditions i.e. high temperatures diesel can vapourize and become instantly flammable. BEWARE!

  • @joebledsoe257

    One really should not use galvanized pipe for diesel fuel fittings or a galvanized tank. The zinc "can" be etched off of the internal surfaces of the pipe or fittings and will end up being deposited on the injector nozzles, thus plugging them up and causing preventable repair costs. Its not so much an issue now with the reduced Sulphur fuels that we have now for highway use, but I don't know what they are doing w/ off road fuel and its Sulphur content. Last I heard it was still at previous levels.

    I was hoping for a link to the fuel rated teflon tape.
    I recently went looking for it on Amazon UK but didn't see any, just the white tape which is fine for air lines anyway but I'd rather the fuel rated stuff for everything.

    • @johnhansen2187
      @johnhansen2187 5 лет назад +1

      The white tape is Teflon, and I have used it on air, Natural gas (Methane), Water - both hot and cold, Desiel Oil and Gasoline. Fuel specific tape is just wite tape with color and mebby a little;e thicker.

    An add to the comment below. I use this pump to fill the generator when the storm is blowing. Before moving to NC I would have to fill the Genny in the blowing snow. It is so easy to do, even your wife can do it while you are still at Myrtle Beach playing golf and she is trying to do client’s taxes in Conn. in February. Before we moved in the last big storm the gas tank on the generator broke open, could not get it repaired cause everything was shut down due no power, wife had to drive 3 hours to borrow a buddy’s generator. Wife fired me, wanted my paycheck back. Now I have my handy electric filler pump, she won’t break the generator plastic gas tank trying to heft 40 lbs. of gas. I’m still fired though. Think I could start a “Go fund me” site.

    I am an underground scoop tram operator in a gold mine, anyways the fuel pump nozzle, doesn't have a trigger lock, the company disabled them because operators were forgetting to turn-off the fuel pump/ taking off with the scoop tram, which sucks. So now we have to physically have stay with the fuel nozzle when refuelling which is a pain, especially on a scoop tram with a 6' high fuel tank spout, what a joke IMO.

    Wow gas station fill ups? That's pricey! I like that you repurposed old heat fuel tanks. That's a nice idea. I have a 3000 gal and 1500 gal from STAFCO. Single wall skid with Fullrite AC/DC pumps. STAFCO was pretty easy to deal with and they make a nice product but being in Virginia freight cost me a lot of money. There just aren't many diesel tank manufacturers on the east coast, they all seem to be out west. I replaced 2 x 350 gallon tanks. I love seeing people repurpose stuff instead of letting them rust up outside or dump them in a landfill.

    All our tanks at the company I work for have metal containments. The lifting eyes are on the containment and they also have slots for pallet forks. Protects the tank much better and easier to move around. None of our trucks have fuel tanks. Fuel is either left on site or you need more load a tank in your truck at the shop and bring it out.

    There's a company that sells replacement spouts for "old" fuel cans that are just an old school flexible spout and they come with a vent too. I replaced all the spouts on my "old" fuel cans with them. They even sell a high flow version that will empty a 5 gallon can in about 45 seconds. I highly recommend for fueling larger tanks
