    Very thorough, honest review. I owned a 17 & 18 Gen 2. And now own a 22 Gen 3. They have all been my daily drivers, and I have off roaded all three extensively. The only thing I think you missed in the comparison is the huge difference the rear coils make in the ride and performance of the Gen 3, especially off road. I'm my opinion that by far is the biggest upgrade they made in the Gen 3's. And it's much more important than the exhaust options, which I love.
    The axle wrap and wheel hop that came with the rear leafs on the Gen 2's is the major reason that Ford detuned the Gen 2's. So people wouldn't be ripping the rear ends out from under the trucks.
    With the 5 link suspension, Ford engineers tuned the Gen 3's more aggressively from the factory. That's why you see the big difference in 0-60 times. Even though the trucks make the same HP and torque on paper. By the way, the problems with the 10 speed transmission that you mention can be resolved completely with a good tune and TCM.
    I'm running a Cobb Accessport and custom tunes and TCM from GooseTuned. Who specializes in tuning these trucks. My 93 MAP provides me with another 100 HP and 80 fps of torque, at the tires. But I decided to install 1050CC injectors so I can run E85. Which gives me roughly another 50 HP and 40fps of torque, at the tires, over the 93 tune. It is a completely different beast and driving experience!
    Take both the Gen 2 and Gen 3 off road. Where you are running them over whoops and around corners at speed. I think you will agree that the five link rear suspension is the biggest upgrade over the two trucks. In my opinion, it's a game changer off road!

    • @whocaresjustdoit
      @whocaresjustdoit 6 месяцев назад +3

      Yes! This is the comment I’ve been looking for. I traded a gen 2 for a gen 3 and they’re completely different trucks off-road. IMO, it’s a miss to review these trucks on road. The gen 3 by far has been the best generation in term of comfort, capability, and efficiency. All in one package. Having a v8 is nice, but getting 19 mpg on the highway with 37 inch tires are a lot better lol.

    I had a 2018 Gen 2 loaded in black and it was my favorite vehicle of all time. I absolutely loved it. It didn’t have live valve shocks though and I also wanted to run 37s so I traded it in on a Gen 3 loaded in black on 37s this week. OMG! Way more difference than you guys are giving credit. It’s night and day. I feel like I’m driving in a cloud. There’s no comparison. Maybe it’s the 37s that’s making the difference. But the power is more in your face. The traction is way better in the rear and feels planted now. Sound system is way better. Exhaust is killer. I took off from my office yesterday and my staff ran to the window to see who it was that made that awesome race car sound. The texted me saying it was awesome. Haha. Ford nailed it with this one. I have no reason to pay another $70k for the R. I’m so happy with this truck so far. It just makes me want to go fast all the time. 😂😎👍

    We have a 2017 Raptor, bought used (1 owner) in mint condition. Anderson Composite carbon front fenders, Method bead locks and we put an MPT tune (a couple options...91, 93) and simply love the truck. The V6 Twin Turbo Ecoboost now puts out 590 HP, 640 Ft LBS Torque on the 93 tune and is so much fun. We've put so many off road miles on it...Mojave, Moab, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana...it just rips.
    My only complaint, if I have any...is it just doesn't sound like a good ol' V8 motor. Man V8's just have that certain rumble, sound...makes me want to get a 2024 Raptor R but just can't justify spending the money on one when I love our 2017!!!

    I had the Gen2, it is unreliable. At least mine was. I never had cam phaser problems, but I had transmissions problems, sun roof problems, two oil pans replaced (leaked - granted mine was a 17 with the plastic pan), radiator leaked, driver window motor, synch crapped out. I'm sure there's more, but that's what I remember. Just bought a Gen 1 today with 48k miles, pretty sure I paid more than the original sticker. Fingers crossed it's more reliable than my gen 2 was. Even if it isn't, it sounds SOOOOOOOOO much better with the 6.2.

    I don't think it's hard to realize the suspension gets MUCH better with each generation. Gen 1 has a rear buck that can be dangerous over large bumps, Gen 2 is significantly better, and I had to upgrade my Gen 2 shocks to handle almost as good as a stock Gen 3.

    Nice videos guys. Can you compare strictly off-road ride quality of the gen 2 and gen 3? I would like to see how the 5 link coil suspension differs from the leaf springs on the gen 2.

    • @TexasTruckChannel
      @TexasTruckChannel  2 года назад +3

      Oh sure, the truth is that they both ride great off road. Most of that is due to the live valve shocks. As far as the leaf vs coil springs go, the coils are slightly more linear throughout the suspension travel. But honestly we were shocked at how similar the Gen 2 and Gen 3 rode both on and off road.

    gen 2 and gen 3 raptors all pull 0-60 in 5~ seconds. weights and everything are all very similar between 2 and 3 so there's no reason the 3 would pull a faster time with the same guts and weight. Gen 2 is sexy af. Gen 3 looks softer. my biggest complaint is that the gen 2 doesnt have the folding shifter or exhaust tuner.

  • @angelperaza5398

    Why compare a low end gen 1 with high end newer gens? For those not familiar the 13-14 gen 1 roush package comes supercharged. You’re comparing a twin turbo v6 with a stock v8..the last gen 1s featured a much better screen, front camera, manual shift, tailgate step and a few other things Im forgetting. A gen 1 13-14 supercharged is the holy grail imo

    • @TexasTruckChannel
      @TexasTruckChannel  2 года назад +19

      Just to clear a few things up here, the Gen 1 that we used in this episode had every single option available from Ford in 2012. The Gen 1 Roush Raptors are often mistaken as a factory option. They were not, and ford never sold a Gen 1 with boost. Every Roush Raptor that you see is an add on from Roush, not an option from the Ford factory. We are comparing a stock V8 verses some stock twin turbo V6's. The 13/14 units had an updated sync system and head lights, other than that, they are identical to the 11/12 units. Including the gear toggle on the shifter. All that being said, you are right! The boosted 13/14 is freaking sweeeeeeeet! And we loved the Gen 1 enough to own it for 5 years. Thanks for watching.

      @@TexasTruckChannel just to clarify your clarification a little more, gen1 13-14 also had a reinforced rear section on the frame rails due to them bending also the torsen front diff became standard option, factory beadlocks became optional, also in 13 terrain color became available and 14 ruby red became available, also the roush Raptors although was a "add on /option" they could be ordered directly from select dealers. I know because I ordered mine in 2013 from a dealer... and there's more to add, but great comparison

      I agree that I’d rather a V8 if given a choice.
      But I wouldn’t rather own a gen 1 over a gen 2 or 3.
      I actually don’t mind the Gen 3 exhaust note. (Gen 2 is lame)
      But the better V8 exhaust note alone isn’t more important than the rest of the improvements made.
      I’d rather the aluminum rust free body, better performance, and better styling (Gen 2 is best exterior Gen 3 is best interior).

    Items of note for a Gen 1...lack-luster front diff. A "limited slip" model. Upgrade with a torsen diff out of a newer model. Fuse #27 is a major headache unless you are aware of it. Easy fix but its a WTF issue. Rear 9.75" axle prone to flexing leading to bearing failure in hard use. Original Fox shocks are cool for a parking lot. Upgrades needed for severe use🇺🇸

    • @TexasTruckChannel
      @TexasTruckChannel  Год назад +2

      Our Gen 1 in this film had a factory torsen front diff. Fuse 27 is annoying, but was never an issue on this one, the 9.75 never had an issue, and the fox shocks looked cool as heck in the parking lot 😎

    • @daveslem4203
      @daveslem4203 Год назад

      Awesome!! I have a 11 SCrew Gen 1. That fuse issue is silly! But, if one isnt up on their reading, a $5 fuse relocation acts the same as a $1000 fuel pump replacement. My rig was purchased in NM and saw a bit of "field work" in AZ & NM. Now in TX its a water fordin machine!🤣 I swapped in a 2014 front diff from a wrecked Raptor so i could get the torsen upgrade. Hard on & off the gas aids in flexing the rear axle front to rear. Lost an axle bearing & pinion bearing due to flex. A couple companies sell weld on truss's to address the flex issue. On Gen 1's, original Foxes arent up to the task of heavy desert runnin for very long w/o big fade!👍🇺🇸

    Great video, fun to watch. Was surprised the Gen 3 was a whole second quicker to 60 than Gen 2. Wonder what Ford did to that tune.🤔. Don't like that Gen 3 has the locked out computers, bad news for tuning. Currently looking at Supercab Gen 2s but beginning to get psyched out by the cam phaser issues people are reporting. Is this a widespread issue?? That could be a deal breaker for me. Like the Gen 1 Raptors too but mpg is terrible for a daily and they are so heavy. I hear those 2.5 Fox shocks don't hold up and need to be rebuilt often. Probably needs 3.0 upgrade.

    Agree that Gen 2 looks the best, but I also think it drives the best. Gen 2 F150s have had the best interiors for several generations (more premium feel than the overly plasticky Gen 1 and much better occupant veiwing position than Gen 3 (due to the screen size wars, Ford raised the entire dashboard so much that it basically narrowed field of vision through the windshield so much it reminds me of a Cessna cockpit). The sound of the 2nd gen really doesnt bother me, and I like the sound much better than any non Raptor F150!
