when I was in 9th gradee these first came out. A kid at my schools dad had oneand hearing that v8 coming to pick him up was insane. Picked up the Gen 2 about a year ago and I'll probably have this thing until my kids can drive. Best truck out there!
Very thorough, honest review. I owned a 17 & 18 Gen 2. And now own a 22 Gen 3. They have all been my daily drivers, and I have off roaded all three extensively. The only thing I think you missed in the comparison is the huge difference the rear coils make in the ride and performance of the Gen 3, especially off road. I'm my opinion that by far is the biggest upgrade they made in the Gen 3's. And it's much more important than the exhaust options, which I love. The axle wrap and wheel hop that came with the rear leafs on the Gen 2's is the major reason that Ford detuned the Gen 2's. So people wouldn't be ripping the rear ends out from under the trucks. With the 5 link suspension, Ford engineers tuned the Gen 3's more aggressively from the factory. That's why you see the big difference in 0-60 times. Even though the trucks make the same HP and torque on paper. By the way, the problems with the 10 speed transmission that you mention can be resolved completely with a good tune and TCM. I'm running a Cobb Accessport and custom tunes and TCM from GooseTuned. Who specializes in tuning these trucks. My 93 MAP provides me with another 100 HP and 80 fps of torque, at the tires. But I decided to install 1050CC injectors so I can run E85. Which gives me roughly another 50 HP and 40fps of torque, at the tires, over the 93 tune. It is a completely different beast and driving experience! Take both the Gen 2 and Gen 3 off road. Where you are running them over whoops and around corners at speed. I think you will agree that the five link rear suspension is the biggest upgrade over the two trucks. In my opinion, it's a game changer off road!
Yes! This is the comment I’ve been looking for. I traded a gen 2 for a gen 3 and they’re completely different trucks off-road. IMO, it’s a miss to review these trucks on road. The gen 3 by far has been the best generation in term of comfort, capability, and efficiency. All in one package. We have a 2017 Raptor, bought used (1 owner) in mint condition. Anderson Composite carbon front fenders, Method bead locks and we put an MPT tune (a couple options...91, 93) and simply love the truck. The V6 Twin Turbo Ecoboost now puts out 590 HP, 640 Ft LBS Torque on the 93 tune and is so much fun. We've put so many off road miles on it...Mojave, Moab, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana...it just rips. My only complaint, if I have any...is it just doesn't sound like a good ol' V8 motor. Man V8's just have that certain rumble, sound...makes me want to get a 2024 Raptor R but just can't justify spending the money on one when I love our 2017!!!

love my 2013 6.2 raptor! Yeah not great mileage, but not why I bought it! My dream truck! Yeah, the faster you go, the smoother it is. But the engine is much more dependaple!
I like all of them. However, Ive heard a lot of gen 2 owners have sold and went back to gen 1 strictly for reliability. The 6.2 is bulletproof compared to the ecoboost. With that said, I just purchased a gen 1 2013 Roush Raptor in Terrain color last week and it's a beast. But honestly, I love all raptors. Gen 3 obviously is the most refined.
Me and my dad both have gen 2’s he has 121,000 miles on his with no issues. Mine has 187,000 also has never had any issues still on original turbos. About to sell mine to upgrade to the gen 3
Gen3 looks good, I like the increased size of the ambient lights, they look brighter too. The gen2 still look better but the interior feels dated for 2022 standards.
I had the Gen2, it is unreliable. At least mine was. I never had cam phaser problems, but I had transmissions problems, sun roof problems, two oil pans replaced (leaked - granted mine was a 17 with the plastic pan), radiator leaked, driver window motor, synch crapped out. I'm sure there's more, but that's what I remember. Just bought a Gen 1 today with 48k miles, pretty sure I paid more than the original sticker. Fingers crossed it's more reliable than my gen 2 was. Even if it isn't, it sounds SOOOOOOOOO much better with the 6.2.
The Ecoboost has issues with the turbos going out and destroying the engine. At least that's been my experience. Cam phasers are also a common failure of that engine. I prefer the look and feel of the gen 2 though.
I don't think it's hard to realize the suspension gets MUCH better with each generation. Gen 1 has a rear buck that can be dangerous over large bumps, Gen 2 is significantly better, and I had to upgrade my Gen 2 shocks to handle almost as good as a stock Gen 3.
Nice videos guys. Can you compare strictly off-road ride quality of the gen 2 and gen 3? I would like to see how the 5 link coil suspension differs from the leaf springs on the gen 2.
Oh sure, the truth is that they both ride great off road. Most of that is due to the live valve shocks. As far as the leaf vs coil springs go, the coils are slightly more linear throughout the suspension travel. But honestly we were shocked at how similar the Gen 2 and Gen 3 rode both on and off road.
I have a gen one and will probably get the raptor r next but have been waiting to see if ford puts the raptor r motor in the bronco raptor. That might change my mind
As a 2020 owner.... I love the sound... of the metal I listen to as the exhaust notes hit.... in fact... sometimes.... I'll turn down the radio to hear those turbos suck freedom... Sorry you have to make up for something in your round edge Alt Nation V8
gen 2 and gen 3 raptors all pull 0-60 in 5~ seconds. weights and everything are all very similar between 2 and 3 so there's no reason the 3 would pull a faster time with the same guts and weight. Gen 2 is sexy af. Gen 3 looks softer. my biggest complaint is that the gen 2 doesnt have the folding shifter or exhaust tuner.
Why compare a low end gen 1 with high end newer gens? For those not familiar the 13-14 gen 1 roush package comes supercharged. You’re comparing a twin turbo v6 with a stock v8..the last gen 1s featured a much better screen, front camera, manual shift, tailgate step and a few other things Im forgetting. A gen 1 13-14 supercharged is the holy grail imo
Just to clear a few things up here, the Gen 1 that we used in this episode had every single option available from Ford in 2012. The Gen 1 Roush Raptors are often mistaken as a factory option. They were not, and ford never sold a Gen 1 with boost. Every Roush Raptor that you see is an add on from Roush, not an option from the Ford factory. We are comparing a stock V8 verses some stock twin turbo V6's. The 13/14 units had an updated sync system and head lights, other than that, they are identical to the 11/12 units. Including the gear toggle on the shifter. All that being said, you are right! The boosted 13/14 is freaking sweeeeeeeet! And we loved the Gen 1 enough to own it for 5 years. Thanks for watching.
@@TexasTruckChannel just to clarify your clarification a little more, gen1 13-14 also had a reinforced rear section on the frame rails due to them bending also the torsen front diff became standard option, factory beadlocks became optional, also in 13 terrain color became available and 14 ruby red became available, also the roush Raptors although was a "add on /option" they could be ordered directly from select dealers. I know because I ordered mine in 2013 from a dealer... and there's more to add, but great comparison
I own a gen 1 and subscribe to the school of less tech less to fix and easy to fix & maintain . With the initial cost & depreciation at two to three times higher with the 2nd&3rd gens I’m going with gen 1.
I agree that I’d rather a V8 if given a choice. But I wouldn’t rather own a gen 1 over a gen 2 or 3. I actually don’t mind the Gen 3 exhaust note. (Gen 2 is lame) But the better V8 exhaust note alone isn’t more important than the rest of the improvements made. I’d rather the aluminum rust free body, better performance, and better styling (Gen 2 is best exterior Gen 3 is best interior).
Thanks for the comparo guys. How dailyable is the gen 1? Does it suck for long highway cruises? Looking for a fun pickup truck. Only hauling needs would be dirtbikes in the bed or camping/surfing gear
They are all great at long trips. Super comfy with climate controlled seats available in all. We used our Gen 1 for about 8 trips to Houston a year with no complaint. Thanks for watching 🤟
Items of note for a Gen 1...lack-luster front diff. A "limited slip" model. Upgrade with a torsen diff out of a newer model. Fuse #27 is a major headache unless you are aware of it. Easy fix but its a WTF issue. Rear 9.75" axle prone to flexing leading to bearing failure in hard use. Original Fox shocks are cool for a parking lot. Upgrades needed for severe use🇺🇸
Our Gen 1 in this film had a factory torsen front diff. Fuse 27 is annoying, but was never an issue on this one, the 9.75 never had an issue, and the fox shocks looked cool as heck in the parking lot 😎
Awesome!! I have a 11 SCrew Gen 1. That fuse issue is silly! But, if one isnt up on their reading, a $5 fuse relocation acts the same as a $1000 fuel pump replacement. My rig was purchased in NM and saw a bit of "field work" in AZ & NM. Now in TX its a water fordin machine!🤣 I swapped in a 2014 front diff from a wrecked Raptor so i could get the torsen upgrade. Hard on & off the gas aids in flexing the rear axle front to rear. Lost an axle bearing & pinion bearing due to flex. A couple companies sell weld on truss's to address the flex issue. On Gen 1's, original Foxes arent up to the task of heavy desert runnin for very long w/o big fade!👍🇺🇸
I have owned all three generations. Gen 2 to three is the largest difference. Massive increase in on-road handling. Mainly at high speeds. The rear end stays way more planted.
Great video, fun to watch. Was surprised the Gen 3 was a whole second quicker to 60 than Gen 2. Wonder what Ford did to that tune.🤔. Don't like that Gen 3 has the locked out computers, bad news for tuning. Currently looking at Supercab Gen 2s but beginning to get psyched out by the cam phaser issues people are reporting. Is this a widespread issue?? That could be a deal breaker for me. Like the Gen 1 Raptors too but mpg is terrible for a daily and they are so heavy. I hear those 2.5 Fox shocks don't hold up and need to be rebuilt often. Probably needs 3.0 upgrade.
Just did phasers...again. Can comfirm its why Im going back to a Gen 1. I love the truck but god damn the engine is absolutely hot garbage up here in Canada.
14:32 wow. Had no idea that 6 cylinder sounded so…..6 cylinderish. I can’t afford any of them, but I do appreciate a V8. Im going back to my corner for the “poors”.
Agree that Gen 2 looks the best, but I also think it drives the best. Gen 2 F150s have had the best interiors for several generations (more premium feel than the overly plasticky Gen 1 and much better occupant veiwing position than Gen 3 (due to the screen size wars, Ford raised the entire dashboard so much that it basically narrowed field of vision through the windshield so much it reminds me of a Cessna cockpit). The sound of the 2nd gen really doesnt bother me, and I like the sound much better than any non Raptor F150!
Special ordered a 6.2 gen 1 with no options. Out the door for 43k. Best truck I ever owned. Still own it.

What did you do to make it have more HP?
just got a gen 2 about 3 weeks ago and i love it..
I just got a gen two like a week ago, I feel you. It's a lot of fun. Not as squishy as I expected but idgaf it mobs
That gen 2 rips!
How the heck do you guys only have 15k subs. Y’all’s video quality had me thinking you guys had at least 500k subs, hands down the best raptor comparison video I’ve seen.
Thank you so much! Sadly it takes time to grow without click bait tactics, which we just can't bring ourselves todo. Thanks for watching, and feel free to share/subscribe, that helps us alot!
@@TexasTruckChannel Maaaaan, thank you so much for not using gimmick clickbait tactics. I hate seeing so many channels "selling soul" just to get a click. Hats off to you gentlemen! 🙌🏻
@@TexasTruckChannel : It might not count for much but you got another new sub today. I always like when I find good channels that are based here in TX. It was nice to see a review of all 3 generations of Raptors back to back. It was exactly the video I was hoping to find.
Great video guys! Just picked up a Gen 2 and loving it.
Had gen2 now have gen3. Both are excellent. My favorite trucks. Borla makes a fine exhaust for gen 2
I have a 2011 gen 1, not only the best truck I’ve ever owned but, the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. I’m sure it will continue to serve who ever I pass it on to
Gen 1 owner - 2013 @ 283K miles. Love it, some rust, but looking to make it right so I can pass this down to my grandson
Raptor gen2 best looking
Best bang for the buck
Gen2 simply best truck
My husband had a gen 1 when we were just boyfriend and girlfriend, a Gen 2 when we were engaged, and now owns a gen 3 when we are married lol. Every F-150 Raptor gen has been a major part of my life, since my late teens! 🤗. I have had so many great adventures in those trucks! I'm looking forward to owning a Ranger Raptor!
I love the gen 2 as well, because it looks best!
That is awesome!
2010 Gen 1 here. Love my SVT 6.2 V8❤️🔥
Congrats on that!
Never owned a truck and your video helped out a lot. Thank you and Merry Christmas 🎄
We love to hear that. Fingers crossed that you end up in a raptor. Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas!
@@TexasTruckChannel Dealership has a slot for me. Need your guys help. I’ve seen a bunch of videos about moonroof fails. I’m not a fan of them. Dealership says people expect them. I don’t want one. What would you guys do?
Love my gen 2. I wish it had the exhaust and exhaust button and suspension button. Also a custom drive mode like the gen 3 would be nice. Of course the newest sync and screen would be nice but the one in the gen 2 is fine tbh
I was pretty skeptical about the 3.5 but I just traded my 2016 with 275k on the clock, couple throttle bodies and turbo oil pipes is all I ever replaced. That motor is solid..
My Raptor - Tickford turbo back exhaust
Tickford ugrade front brakes
Tickford upgrade 18" Method Race rims with Bridgestone rubber
TurboSmart blow off valve
Fenix Massive intercooler upgrade
Fabulous Fab twin airbox upgrade
Dyno tuned.
WHAT A BEAST. WELCOME TO THE 300kw+ CLUB
Method wheels are a downgrade over oem
I just got a ruby red metallic crew cab gen 1 raptor a few days ago, I love it!
Gen 1 is the best
Gen 2 is by far best looking.
I am looking for a Gen 1. Can’t afford more than that, but I am glad to know it’s not too far off even from the gen 3
Going to need to do this when the Raptor R drops and the 5.2 V8, it's just adding the boost to a V8!
Absolutely!
Same exact truck. Just 1.5 seconds faster 0-60 and a deeper exhaust sound. All that for $60k more.
@@jeffm8882 not same truck, suspension changes too.
Can’t live without the tech in the Gen3. From the controls on the wheel, to the Sync 3 with wireless apple CarPlay.
Great video. Possible next video: reliability comparison. Problems with each generation.
Awesome video men! Love every bit of it!
Thanks Matt!!
love my 2013 6.2 raptor! Yeah not great mileage, but not why I bought it! My dream truck! Yeah, the faster you go, the smoother it is. But the engine is much more dependaple!
Great video gang!!!! Lot of useful stuff in here!!
Thanks!
I like the Gen3 the best. The catch is if I went raptor shopping, I would shop for a Gen2 because the gen3 is out of my price range.
Congrats on the roush raptor! The 6.2 with boost is no joke.
Me and my dad both have gen 2’s he has 121,000 miles on his with no issues. Mine has 187,000 also has never had any issues still on original turbos. About to sell mine to upgrade to the gen 3
amazing video guys, thank you.
Thanks for watching! We can’t wait for our next Raptor review.
@@TexasTruckChannel it would be nice to see a video on what to check when buying a pre own ford raptor.
Gen 1 was and will always be the best Raptor. Its a tank and they sound is amazing.
I've got a 2014 special edition and I absolutely love this truck. Only truck I would trade it for is a new Raptor R. Gotta have that V8
Very cool to see these 3 gens together
I have a Gen 2 and it’s my favorite and the best looking by far imo
The Gen 1 Raptor looks like a Giant Cough Drop tablet 😮
Looks goofy ..like a kicker football helmet
Thank you guys, great video based on your knowledge and passion.
24 gen 3 802a 37" tires and not looking back love the truck.
My truck had the 6.2 and I concur, given to us from God😂. Great video y’all! Looks like y’all are located pretty close to me!
AMEN on the 6.2. Are you in DFW?
@@TexasTruckChannel I’m in stephenville so not too far away!
just picked up a 14 in mint condition low miles ...stoked :)
This was a great video, thanks for making!!
You bet, thanks for watching!
What a profesional small channel great work
Thank you!
I just bought a gen 3 and love it coming from a 2018 gen 2 !
Congrats!
Great! Staying with Gen 1
Gen3 looks good, I like the increased size of the ambient lights, they look brighter too. The gen2 still look better but the interior feels dated for 2022 standards.
If gen 1 had a gen 2 wheel it would be the best
I wonder if that Grey Gen 1 is the truck I see around Aledo. I’m the other Grey Gen 1. Hood graphics, no bed graphics and a Diamondback bed cover.
I am in deep love in gen 2. I wish I could afford one and ship it to europe.. i love big cars and the front on mk2 is the most stylish one :)
I would never get rid of my gen 1, to much of a damn good truck
Short answer: YES.
I have all the fun on the planet, hauling my rooftop tent in my SVT 2012,, where my Raptor will not go, my dirt bike will. Have fun go Offroad 🤙🏻🇨🇦
That is awesome! Thanks for watching.
You guys...
Why are you doing that to me...?
I am gonna buy one someday ❤
DO IT!
Love my gen 1 . On 37” the 6.2 will downshift from a roll and still burn the tires .
I’m going to start using that word, bench marked. I didn’t copy my work i bench marked it off of previous data. 😂
😂
Thank you fellows. Im looking to by Gen 1 soon.
You bet. Happy hunting. We miss our Gen 1 all the time.
Has it been more reliable?! I REALLY want a gen 2…. But I’d much prefer the reliability of gen 1
The Ecoboost has issues with the turbos going out and destroying the engine. At least that's been my experience. Cam phasers are also a common failure of that engine. I prefer the look and feel of the gen 2 though.
Good video, hmmmm kind of expecting a bigger hill!! 😂 That's like a driveway!
Thanks! Raptors are good at making hills look like driveways.
My gen 2 jumps and hops really bad in the rear end over the smallest road imperfection even with low tyre pressure
Gen 2 you can adjust the steering and shocks. Gen3 you just add on to it
gen 2 and gen 3 raptors all pull 0-60 in 5~ seconds. weights and everything are all very similar between 2 and 3 so there's no reason the 3 would pull a faster time with the same guts and weight.
Great video. We need to collab on some tuned vs stock Raptors.
Sounds great. Shoot us a note when you have a minute: BrakeCheckShow@gmail.com
Don't care how much lighter or faster the new ones are, still sticking with the V8.
I agree that I’d rather a V8 if given a choice.
But I wouldn’t rather own a gen 1 over a gen 2 or 3.
I actually don’t mind the Gen 3 exhaust note. (Gen 2 is lame)
But the better V8 exhaust note alone isn’t more important than the rest of the improvements made.
I’d rather the aluminum rust free body, better performance, and better styling (Gen 2 is best exterior Gen 3 is best interior).
Great and very informative 👍 🙏
Thanks!
Gen 2 looks just as new from the out as the gen 3
F-250 diesel is 5.5 seconds and gets 20 MPG hwy, according to Car and Driver.
Ok so in 2012 the gen 1 got the Torsen front diff?
@@jlc6423 i believe that is correct. Mine is an 11 and was limited slip. Swapped in a 14 diff.
@@daveslem4203 ok great to know thanks. I picked up a gen 1 a year ago. Had 52,000 miles on it. Couldn’t resist lol
I have owned all three generations. Gen 2 to three is the largest difference. Massive increase in on-road handling. Mainly at high speeds. The rear end stays way more planted.
Great review
Good review for someone looking into getting a raptor, whatever gen lol.
Thanks!
GEN 2 !!!
Well done
Trail control is a one pedal drive system. It requires throttle control but no brakes. Otherwise this was a great video!
