I am absolutely certain that Karl didn't even realize he was meant to be acting most of the time. This is legitimately just his regular self in different clothes.
Derek is Gervais' most underrated work. And I just love the way Karl is seamlessly incorporated into the concept without having to change a thing. Just put him in a wig and tell him to be himself. I bet he didn't even have scripted lines, hahahaha
No-one is under-rating it. You’re not special because you like it. It’s generally acclaimed and the acting is superb. We all know this, Peggy Hill. What the fuck is it with RUclips cunts saying anything they like is “under-rated”?
I find Dougie the most inspiring of the characters because he has completely accepted his lot in life and he really couldn't give a fuck what anyone thinks.
Taylor Lynn It's funny I didn't like Karl in those other shows, like Idiot abroad etc but in this he was hands down brilliant. Best actor, even better than Ricky, and incredibly well written (thanks to Ricky). Such a huge shame he didn't do season 2.. I couldn't even finish season 2. Apparently he was scared of acting.. even though he is so good at it! I think maybe he did't like the wig.
Makes it seem like his persona is all an act. If this is how he "acts", then his whole stupid petsonality might be an act. In the early seasons of XFM, you can hear him laugh sometimes, like he's breaking character.
Karls 'acting' isnt really acting, Ricky told Karl to just react to whats happening how he would in real life - karl said that when he kicked off with that woman who was sniffing around after her mums money that he genuinely got annoyed cos he imagined it was really happening, he said he was shaking afterwards - i loved Dougie cos really it was just Karl being Karl
"People go, 'Oh, you're quite good in it'. I think I got away with it - it wasn't acting!" said Pilkington."I can put myself in a situation dead easy and get wound up by it, but for me, if you'd said, 'Right, that's brilliant Karl, [now] do it in Irish' - that to me is a proper actor! If you can't do that stuff, then you're not really acting, you're just remembering s**t."
Karl's character was important to the series, he was like a narrator of sorts. a bit of an outsider commenting on it all. his presence was definitely missed.
Derek is probably one of the best comedy shows I’ve ever seen. It teaches life lessons about family, friends, the little things that we sometimes take for granted, to be kind, etc, all while having a jolly good laugh at the same time. Ricky is a genius for creating this show.
Why does this show hit me so hard every. fucking. time? I can't think of any show I've shed more tears from than this one. Happy tears, and sad tears. Well done Mr. Gervais.
I can't believe Karl thought his performance was bad in this - he's fucking brilliant. I was so sad when he left after the first season. Love you Karl.
This show is beautiful. That's the only way I can describe it. In every sense it is beauty. The concept, the acting the approach to the subject matter, the execution. So very well done. By a couple of guys with no formal training and some wonderful actors. Brilliant.
Brilliant 😂 I cried and laughed through the whole series. It's brilliant I watched it all in a day. Derek's such a nice person who keeps losing people but keeps on being happy and kind
It's hard to act, even being yourself. Karl is genuinely a natural at acting. Karl could of easily been so wooden, but he's so effortless whilst working with a script! I'd love to see him do more acting!
I love Derek... and one to the huge reasons is Dougie. EVERY episode is a gem. I'm laughing my head off - and then I'm crying the next moment. Brilliant cast, wonderful writing... just LOVE it! Karl ... (Dougie) ... You're a gem!
The attention to detail with this show is unreal. I love how Dougie was in the library and the book on the table in front of him was "Positive Psychology". Fucking brilliant 🤘
Among his reasons for quitting the show is that he doesn't consider himself to be an "actor." He's a brilliant actor. Yes, he's just playing himself, pretty much. But how many people can do that in such a completely natural, un-affected way? Watch any sitcom when they have some sports star or some other famous non-actor appear as himself. They "act" like a chunk of two-by-four. Karl seems completely unaware that there is a camera in the room.
Mickey Bitsko I think Karl is just used to a studio environment as he's worked as a producer for multiple shows over the years as well as had camera's in his face a lot for things like An Idiot Abroad. If you watch him on the old podcasts or Rickey Gervais Show he does a lot of improv scenarios with Ricky and Steve and takes them seriously enough as if they were actually happening which is very natural and very funny V:
+Cal DW I don't think any producer could appear that relaxed and natural. On top of that he's also very interesting, he doesn't bore you in the slightest. This is all very hard to pull off. Sportsmen are also used to cameras in their face. No matter how you put it he is very talented.
Iv Ko Again I don't think this is down to Karl's knowledge that he's trying to act, he just sort of does it. He can over complicate scenarios when he gets into them but I don't think he's aware he's doing it. He's very imaginative in some respects and oblivious in others which is why he can sometimes come up with complex details to a scenario Ricky or Steve never thought of but he has a habit of taking scenarios too literally at the same time. Ricky and Steve for example have tried telling him famous proverbs like "Peoples in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" and in Karl's head he is thinking of all the negative drawbacks there would be to actually living in a glass house but he doesn't understand how it relates to the real world as a metaphor. In one aspects he's very creative and in another he's just oblivious. This isn't a bad thing mind, he's a very interesting individual and very creative, but I don't think he's learned or trained to be that way like many actors have actually done with full understanding, he just sort of does what he does naturally because that's how his mind works.
Iv Ko Musicians still need to learn instruments and artists still need to learn how to draw. There's a certain level of learning involved when it comes to certain kinds of work and forms of expression. Karl's naturally good at getting into character but he still would have had to learn how to do what he does while considering where the camera will be, sound production and so on though chances are he learned a lot of that back when he was a producer.
Karl has something very rare. Comedy genius without trying. Its just Karl. Ricky knows this and lets him be who he is. The result is classic comedy. Karl doesnt even know what acting is it seems, doesnt care even. Does his lines and its perfect
The part with Dougie and the clingy lady with the mothers ring, one of the best bits and Karl REALLY bit into the scene and character, you could tell. Hate those kind of people that only care about money and jewelry. "How's the ring fit?! Nice that. You want that but what about the box full of pictures, that's your moms memories but you don't care about that".
I don't know what was more heartwarming. What Karl's character said from 3:25 to 4:05, or the fact that it was Karl who said it. I know it was probably scripted, but coming from him, it was pretty awesome. I'm annoyed that Netflix Australia took this down. I've been watching it for years.

I am absolutely certain that Karl didn't even realize he was meant to be acting most of the time. This is legitimately just his regular self in different clothes.
He said in an interview that that's true. He admitted he didn't want to try to act, he was just being himself
66kaisersoza
That is brilliant and absolutely something Karl would do.
SupraSeaPea Haha i was just thinking the same thing.
+PaintraSeaPea Wait, he's acting? Seems like he walked out with no rehearsing, while wearing the hair thing and said "Right, let's start." lol
+PaintraSeaPea Karl has an a amazing ability to get worked up about made up situations hahaha
I like how Dougie is pretty much Karl in a wig
No shit
jimmyboy141414 he means his exact personality
thanks:)
Nathaniel Gatewood yeah the dougie character is basically karl being himself lol
Nathaniel Gatewood Ricky is not an idiot. He knows he cant write a character that is better or funnier for Karl than Karl himself.
The way Dougie explains the frog to Derek is basically how Ricky used to have to explain things to Karl

That Mother's ring episode was amazing. Such an iconic scene from a wonderful, yet sadly underrated show

We need a series based on Karl's childhood and Karl plays his own dad.....wouldn't that be weird and wonderful. Karl's a pretty good actor.
Someone get BBC on the line! We got a show here, folks!
Penny Colquitt he wasn't even acting. That was his real self tbf
Guess fucking what: Karl is doing a sitcom for Sky, and the premise is him living a life without Suzanne and having dialogue bits with his brain.
Isn't that the premise for Garfield Minus Garfield?

The best of Dougie is every scene he's in, basically haha. Karl was this show. hands down.
John Watson fan I must admit, there were very few scenes I cut out with him in it hahaha
