Here’s an idea for when the fairy type then vs now comes out: Instead of cutting straight to the generation that the fairy type came out, you could cover all the pokemon who previously Weren’t fairy types that became fairy types, like for gen 3 you could talk about gardevoir before it got the fairy type, and then talk about how the fairy type changed it.
Also all the types he's covered are either ones who started off borderline non existent or flat out non existent or had a wild ride of buffs nerfs and overall quality
Note: Future Sight was only 80 base power till Gen 5, where they buffed it to 100 bp, and buffed again in Gen 6, where they buffed it to 120 bp. Also, the damage it dealt was typeless, so it did hit Dark types but did not do super effective damage to things weak to Psychic EDIT: Also did not receive STAB when used by a Psychic type Pokemon till Gen 5. It was inferior to Psychic in every way till it got some buffs
@@jeffreygao3956 fire seems too overused or there are just no major changes other than roster and moves. I'm gonna guess it'll take a long time to take part of this series
You forgot to mention how Amnesia was OP in Gen I before the Special split. It raised users Special by 2 stages, which was absurd considering how many Pokemon had already high Sp. stat.
In case people don't get it - "before the special split" means it raised the special stat. Which was *both* the special attack and special defense, so amnesia in gen 1 was a *4 stat boost* and one of them basically made your pokémon invincible, especially if it was either Esper or it had Recovery. *sigh* god Espers were fucking broken gen 1 lol.
And accidentally made Drapion and Skuntank viable (although Bisharp is really a better option for Psychic/Fairy, in particular, but Bisharp was _already_ good)
"cresselia just... doesn't die" cresselia's signature move would like a word with you... and also more attention. it isn't lunar dance's fault that it is a garbage move that dishonors the label of "signature move"
@@goldenhydreigon4727 it is still a signature move which makes the user faint and only benefits the next pokemon to be sent out. think about it from the perspective of a wild cresselia: what benefit does it gain by knocking itself unconcious like that? given that the effect is to heal just the next pokemon sent out, it wouldn't be the type of thing where it could use it in order to heal a massive number of pokemon that are suffering (this being cresselia, I imagine that would be what it would use it for if it could, more specifically to heal pokemon who are being attacked by darkrai). additionally, one could argue that knocking itself out like that would just leave it vulnerable to darkrai's nightmare powers (as if it wasn't already a bad match for its rival legendary, being a psychic type matched up against a dark type). actually, that matchup is such that i suspect that cresselia is another of those legends that might have been fairy type if it were introduced today (along with celebi and jirachi, among others), but they didn't want to change the types of any legendaries.
Now they are basically overclassed by fairies, because they are only strong vs 2 types, the only useful psychics today have op Stats, have a good secondary type or have nice supp moves. If we quit the overpowered psychic legendaries, psychic is like one of the 3 worst types.

I will say: I think that the introduction of Fairy types kind of did impact the Psychic type, at least indirectly. Because since then, Fairy sort of became the “new” Psychic-type, but maybe even better. If you have a Fairy type on your team, you have a reliable check against Fighting types, which was kind of the main type that Psychic countered before Gen 6. And Fairy is also strong against Dark types, the type that is strong against and immune to Psychic types. The only advantage that Psychic has over Fairy is that it’s strong against Poison types, whereas Fairy types are weak to Poison. But, if you have either a Steel type or Ground type (or a Pokemon that at least knows Earthquake), you can easily counter a Poison type. In other words, the Fairy-type kinda made the Psychic-type redundant. If you have a Fairy-type, you don’t really need a Psychic-type on your team.
Also many Psychic mons got Fairy coverage or Fairy added to their typing Stuff like Reuniclus ran Focus Miss as a Dark types counter, now it gets Dazzling Gleam..
@@AlldaylongRock true. Also, it’s funny how he mentions Bede at the end of the video. Bede going from Psychic specialist to Fairy specialist is basically the devs admitting what I’m talking about: Fairy essentially replaced Psychic. Lol
@@rzeitouneh Fairy is a way better type than Psychic, I actually think that it is as OP as Gen1 Psychic or veeery close It completely shifted the way teams are constructed and it has only one real weakness, because who the f*ck is gonna use a Poison type to counter Fairies(Unless you do Toxic stall strats with Toxapex or something) when Steel types are already used for both good offensive and defensive utility? (Not to mention Steel/Fairy types being absolutely broken defensively) Plus with virtually all Fairy types getting Psychic-type coverage (not mentioning the plethora of Psychic/Fairy mons there are) but only a few getting Ground/Fighting/Fire coverage on their best attacking side it just makes sense to use a Steel type.. Fairy was actually another nail in the coffin for Bug types.. Because see: resistance to Fighting and Dark, while being SE to both(the Fighting resistance and SE against Dark were the only selling points of Bugs, because Dark and Ghost took care of Psychics already) and it also resists Bug for some reason.. I think that while surely Dragon was a brutal offensive type, the Fairy type having sooo much offensive power (SE against the 3 best attacking types, also isn't Moonblast the most powerful, 100 accuracy, no drawbacks move that exists while being widespread ? Correct me if I'm wrong) and defensive utility means that it totally is the best type in the game and something that you have to have a way to deal with it
I’d love to see a Dark-type Then vs Now. Only because I want to see your reaction when you realise that apart from getting Umbreon, there was literally NO WAY of getting a Dark-type Pokemon until you get access to Kanto. And I wish I was kidding!
I was basing my joke on Pokemon Gold and Silver. Snaesal is only obtainable in Ice Path in Pokemon Crystal, and I already mentioned that Umbreon is the only Dark-Type Pokemon you can get before beating the League.
For some additional perspective, with Mewtwo's Special stat of 154 in Gen 1, he would effectively have a BST of a whopping 744 if converted directly to later generations! That's over TWENTY (20) points ahead of Arceus and Crowned Zacian/Zamazenta (720), only TEN (10) points behind Ultra Necrozma, and less than 40 points behind the strongest obtainable Pokemon in the series (all of which are temporary forms). When they say "We dreamed of creating the world's strongest Pokemon. . . and we succeeded" they weren't exaggerating!
The fairy type’s introduction definitely made Psychic a bit stronger. Adding a weakness to poison and steel in exchange for making big and dark neutral is a trade off Psychics love. They can obviously handle poison and although steel resists Psychic, a lot of steel types are lacking in special defense… and only really being checked by steel and ghost isn’t exactly a terrible place to be
If you ever play Pokémon Crystal, try to get Shiny Tyrogue from the Odd Egg. Evolving it into Hitmonlee will get you High Jump Kick before the third gym.
Those elemental punches helped but Alakazam was hard countered by Snorlax and really struggled against Mistrivious. Tyrannitar could also prove problamatic but it's lower special defense and HP meant it could be overpowered. Snorlax though was a hard stop to any phychic type Alakazam or otherwise. In Gen 1 they didn't really have a Pokémon that was a hard counter. Tauros was strong but it was an attacker and it was slower than Alakazam and Starmie so it couldn't take 2 phychics back to back. Snorlax however could and would KO them back in one hit. Gen 2 Snorlax really is the single most dominant Pokémon competitive has ever seen.
@@MrMarinus18 Misdreavus was a late game pokemon in GSC. I did not intend to say that Alakazam can handle a whole Johto but most parts of it. I used it on my Crystal playthrough, it helped a lot.
Alakazam can still use the elemental punches in gen 8, I think it peaked back in gen 2 because the elemental punches were all special moves as fire, ice and electric type attacks were all special until gen 4

12:25 I wholeheartedly agree. While I’m mostly a dragon tamer myself, I do think some other types deserve some time to shine, particularly bug since I’ve also got a little bug catcher in me, but also because Volcarona was cool and I’d absolutely adore another Pokémon like it. Maybe they could even make it a counterpart to Volcarona, representing the moon instead of the sun.
@@randomjeffy9710 Ok so you don't know, but I'll explain it. PMD2 is a shortening of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2, the sequel to the first Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Game, which is a spinoff. (spoilers, kinda) At the postgame, Cresselia joins your team to fight Darkrai. But while going through the dungeons, Cresselia goes to defeat every Pokèmon in its way, which means it takes a lot of damage before you even reach Darkrai. Because of this, the PMD fandom just says Cresselia is stupid because it either wastes their reviver seeds, or makes them fail their mission altogether. I don't know if you already knew this but I explained it anyway.
Mewtwo was arguably the SINGLE MOST OVERPOWERED Pokemon in gen1, with Alakazam, Jynx (due to ice being actually good in gen1 competition and having lovely kiss), and Exeggutor (one of the best competitive Pokemon that generation) being all close seconds

In other words, the Fairy-type kinda made the Psychic-type redundant. If you have a Fairy-type, you don’t really need a Psychic-type on your team.
Except maybe Metagross.
Also many Psychic mons got Fairy coverage or Fairy added to their typing
Stuff like Reuniclus ran Focus Miss as a Dark types counter, now it gets Dazzling Gleam..
@@AlldaylongRock true. Also, it’s funny how he mentions Bede at the end of the video. Bede going from Psychic specialist to Fairy specialist is basically the devs admitting what I’m talking about: Fairy essentially replaced Psychic. Lol
@@rzeitouneh Fairy is a way better type than Psychic, I actually think that it is as OP as Gen1 Psychic or veeery close
It completely shifted the way teams are constructed and it has only one real weakness, because who the f*ck is gonna use a Poison type to counter Fairies(Unless you do Toxic stall strats with Toxapex or something) when Steel types are already used for both good offensive and defensive utility?

Nah still skip especially when it’s annoyingly in the middle of the video
Nah I also don't skip tomskas

"Gen 2 was pretty severe for Psychic Pokemon"
It's just a misconception, Alakazam was OP at its peak because it learned the three elemental punches.
JUST ALAKAZAM

Were you referencing PMD2?
@@RandomHans what is PMD2??
I had no idea that the Psychic types went from so f*cking op to average.
He covered it in bug type then vs now
Mewtwo was arguably the SINGLE MOST OVERPOWERED Pokemon in gen1, with Alakazam, Jynx (due to ice being actually good in gen1 competition and having lovely kiss), and Exeggutor (one of the best competitive Pokemon that generation) being all close seconds
@@matthewkuscienko4616 In Gen 2 however, the most overpowered 'mon was probably Snorlax.
@@robertlupa8273 Yes, from what I heard, Snorlax was basically the OU metagame, and it could pretty much do just about anything with it's sets it could run
