Note for engineering: After designing and everything "should fit" always add a 1/4" or 1/2". Makes a world of difference! Awesome desk though, would love to try and build one.
Just a word of advice from a drummer. To get even pressure around a round surface (like the res here) you need to tighten one screw, then the screw directly across from it, and then move on to the next screw and the screw across from that one and so on. This ensures that the surface pressure is equal through out the top of the res and you're at less risk of breaking your res and will ensure the o rings are pressurized properly. (Really you're supposed to make a "star pattern" but with this many screws that's not really as easy to explain how to do)
Such a cool project! One of the things that I would have done different is using epoxy glue to glue the acrylic to prevent leaks and it would look like a one piece.
Hey Linus for future builds, you want to use a spiral point tap when tapping acrylic. The way the flute is cut is to be used on holes that go all the way through and instead of the chip gumming up inside and ruining everything it forces the chips to be pushed through the hole leaving clean threads and you can go reasonably fast with this specific tap.
It might be worth looking into vacuum filling. There are kits for filling automotive cooling systems. They work a treat. Not that expensive. Be bubble free and easy fill in one shot. I encourage you to look into it.
Seeing how the loop is tested with pressure, have you guys ever tried pulling a vacuum on a loop and drawing water in that way? No need to bleed air out afterwards.
Its awesome how a channel can post every day for this long on multiple channels and still have content that is good. I know that they're like a business and all, but to post everyday and not to have stale content is astounding. Great job LMG, keep it up! 👍
To be fair, right now even something on a budget GPU from Team Blue is an episode of "you can't afford this". I'm pretty sure there are old Scrapyard Wars where you couldn't build the system anywhere near the price tag it had then...
The res almost needs to have screws coming in from both top and bottom that way both sides are compressed well.. or glue all of it together except the top piece so you only have one place for leaks which would make it way easier to handle :) ❤ loving the build . It made me get drawing for a new customer build that's wild :)
Do your tapping under a drill press with a little downward pressure. Keeps the tap from slipping, the threads normal to the hole, and allows consistent smooth pressure tapping the threads
I'm commenting about this again and Colin has improved his hosting so far. Think he is more comfortable to host with a partner but it would be not all the time but keep it up. Not all people started great.
Try on a scrap piece , slightly undersize the hole you drill in the acrylic . Then , heat the tap with enough heat to slightly soften the acrylic as you screw it in to cut threads.
I truly wonder the amount of money going into this project. The cost of components to all the man hours spent to work on this. This is such an amazing channel giving wonderful content.
You should boil the water prior to using it as that will remove a lot of dissolved gases from the water. Or you could use a vacuum chamber to remove all the dissolved gases from the water or even combine the two methods. The added benefit is that if you do get rid of all dissolved oxygen from the water, corrosion problems get mostly non-existent. Then you should use a vacuum filling station to get all the air out of the systems during the filling of the water system. Also adding some car cooling fluid would mitigate corrosion problems. It could solve a lot of problems... Regarding your homemade reservoir, use a torque screwdriver so that the screws are tightened down with the same torque, which will put a perfect consistent pressure on the o-rings...
I put a sub near my computer and ran bass sweeps and it helped a lot with dislodging bubbles from the loop. It was years ago but the vibration really helped just a thought for anyone who has a tricky loop.
I love it when Canadians say things like “this hard line run is going to be an absolute nightmare, there’s no other way to get it in and OUT of there.” 4:35
One problem with using soapy water is that the pressurised leak could blow the solution away and make it appear that there is no bubbles, the best form of leak detection is Swagelok Snoop
You should use a bike pump or a soccer ball pump. They adapt easily to the EK pump. Using the mini EK pump is not practical because IF there is pressure loss, it is also happening while you are pumping so it could take forever to get to the “green zone.”
