Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
How is Nick Cave still capable of putting out amazing music this far in his career? That's sum legend type shit, sum GOAT activity.
The man is consistently good. His jesse James soundtrack is still one of my all time favourite.
I think his stuff has always been really "adult" so its easy for the transition
@@vexrosenberg7386 yeah but he hasn't hit a definite slump. (Ghosteen was disappointing tho.)
And that's flippin impressive, I thought his whole "Blues/Gothic Rock" sound would age badly. But he still puts out refined works.
@@balmain-i3e I mean I think I just see it as less of a leap than like weezer, blink 182, green day ect. Thats why I think swans are so incredible right now is because michael gira was like "yeah im too old for that earlier shit" and switched up the way he makes music quite a bit. I feel like most older musicians have to reinvent themselves where Nick Cave has kind of already been making more adult sounding music his whole life
Nick, Warren, and the rest of the Bad Seeds are all the collective GOAT.
The first time I heard that “Hand of God” vocal bit, I knew I’d be hearing Melon sing it
Ofc lol
Dangit, now each time I'll hear Hand of God I'll be laughing

@@anthonyismyname1341 thank you :)
it's shocking that nick cave is this far into his career and STILL putting out such incredible music, traversing genres with no issue.
It’s because Nick Cave isn’t actually writing the music. Everyone in the industry knows that the master songwriting legend Dr. Lil Pump has been writing the past three Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds albums plus this one.
That's one of the most admirable things an artist can do as they age: continuing to evolve and change their sound and never lose any creative juices as time passes. Björk is another great example of this.
him, Radiohead, Swans... can't think of too many others. I suspect Xiu Xiu will be joining their ranks soon enough but their career isn't quite old enough yet
Yes, it’s so shocking. Lol.
@@mattdoeland yes like OMG I CANNOT BELIEVE IT. HE IS ACTSHALLY MAKING MUSIC!!!
youtubers love overly dramatic comments.
Craaving for a 9
still kind of sad that anthony didn't enjoy ghosteen that much. everytime i listen to waiting for you, i get tears. what an unbelievably gorgeous song.
waiting for you & bright horses.. unreal
I never got into Ghosteen when it came out. To me it sounded like a less emotional rendition of Skeleton Tree. Maybe I neel to give it another try
@@joosewv work your way up to hollywood
I recall he gave it pretty high marks when it was released.
@@joosewv it is even more emotional
Y’all know this isn’t Anthony’s opinion right? He’s clearly being held hostage by cal.
Cal is just righting all of the wrongs Anthony is prone to do. He's the hero we need in these dark times.
I was needing a new type of Anthony meme. thank you.
What even happened to Cal? Haven't seen him in ages
Can’t believe Nick Cave & Warren Ellis did the original soundtrack for the Venom sequel.
Wait for deluxe collectors remastered ultimated maximum carnage edition coming in June!

Oh for goodness sake! I've spent weeks trying to work out why CARNAGE had been stylized like that. It all makes sense now. I feel so stupid!
The assassination of Jesse James by the coward robert Ford is still my favorite score ever and in general a criminally underrated film.
White Elephant ending had me like DAMN
Nick Cave tier list when?
that'd be an interesting one! i wonder where your funeral my trial would land.
Almost all are S or A
Boatman's call is B
Nocturna is D
done
@@KingOfTheBeez Boatman is god-tier, yo.
@Alin Deac last time I Checked, his most popular (commercially successful also) records were Let Love In and Murder Ballads
Also, I think most people (including myself) aren't too huge on the Boatman's Call simply for the fact it's one of Cave's most linear releases instrumentally speaking. A lot of samey songs, fillers and the instrumentals themselves are generic, bland singer/songwriter templates. Lyrically it is one of his most pretty, but idk, it does leave a lot to be desired sonically and dynamically. He played out way too safe and, to me at least, most of what this album tries to offer, "No More Shall We Part" does it better
@@freakingjames1820 Agreed. There are some good tunes on Boatman's Call but as a whole it's probably the most boring record they've made, at least to me. And I do love And No More Shall We Part. Its arrangements are more vibrant and the overall feel has more drama. Boatman's Call is just full of happy simple little songs
The fact that Cave has put out albums as amazing and as innovative as Push The Sky Away, Skeleton Tree, Ghosteen, and now Carnage ... 40 years into his career ... is truly astounding.
There’s no doubt that artists like Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, and Neil Young have put out excellent modern albums; and Bowie’s ‘BlackStar’ In particular-is a masterpiece.
But I truly believe that Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen are two of the Greatest, most powerful, and most flawless albums that I have ever heard. And not only are they incredible for how great the actual music is ...
They epitomize what Art is supposed to accomplish;
Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen were an outlet for an absolutely horrific tragedy that Cave had to go through. And when you listen to the albums, you are put into that world and are plunged into despair. But, by the end of the albums, you actually feel better than you did before you listened to them.
To me, that’s what Art is supposed to be about. Finding a way to turn tragedy - into something beautiful. And by doing that, you are actually able to make sense of all the tragedy we endure as humans.
I’ve only listened to Carnage once, but I have a strong feeling that I’m going to end up viewing it in the same league as Cave’s last 3 albums.
I concur. I've heard Carnage four times now and I think it might be in the same league with the last 3 albums, which were all amazing. Nick Cave is truly remarkable.
@@Missjunebugfreak You’re making me excited to listen to Carnage again lol.
Btw, props for your profile pic. Nina Simone is one of my Heroes.
She’s also one of Cave’s Heroes, so it all ties together lol.
Let's agree: Nick Cave was black when he made sculptures
There's a picture of the two Nick Caves together, so no unfortunately
Lots of 8s this year
thanks for spoiling my opinion
its been like that for so long
They said that about last year too
Makes ya wonder how many washes that flannel is getting
just ruined the video thanks not even gonna watch it now
I want to take Anthony seriously despite him calling the amazing Push The Sky Away a slog.
Carnage is a strong 8 though. So I guess he's half right
Holy fuck the title track and balcony man are gorgeous. Cave leaning into his falsetto goes right to the feelsy place. This album feels to me like the kind of project cave and ellis have done before, where they retreat from the bad seeds brand for a bit to do something that might feel too weird or out of left field or maybe even a little regressive to go in the bad seeds catalogue, and just do whatever they want. Those projects are always gorgeous, see also grinderman.
This is my first Nick Cave album I have been exposed to. Really dug it. I do like the harder stuff I've heard he's known for so might go to The Birthday Party days and then work my way from there.
Oh God yes do check out the birthday party it is to this day some of the nastiest rock n roll ever created
Birthday Party is one of the twisted bands of all time. Also check out Rowland S Howard's solo work.
I saw the thumbnail like "give it a 9 you bastard"
Anthony: all but 1 track in favorites
Also Anthony: 8
ANTHONY FANTANO THE BEEFIEST SHOULDERS IN THE GAME
He buff
I legitimately thought this Warren Ellis was the comicbook writer
He’s the second bearded Warren Ellis
I was really hoping them to be the same person
Kinda well timed, considering I was in the mood for something new by him after enjoying Transmetropolitan for so much time now (it must be one of my favourites).
Same
I did too!
Lets argue: dirty three’s horse stories is underrated classic
No valid argument can be made against your statement.
too fucking right!
Why argue? It's a fact
The true travesty is that the drummer of Dirty Three's other band, Xylouris White, is almost completely unknown and have released only great albums the past few years.
No argument from me, sorry :)
Speaking of Warren Ellis, are there any other Dirty Three fans around? Ocean Songs and Whatever You Love You Are are wonderful albums.
Love their self-titled - Everything's Fucked is one of my all time favs
amazing band. seen them on several occasions. phenomenal
@@theperfectimperfect I would love to see them live in person. I've watched many live videos on RUclips and it looks like an awesome time.
I was lucky enough to be at the Big Day Out festival where both The Dirty Three and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds were performing. I'm old but happy.
Dirty 3 - Evelyn hotel residency, Fitzroy, Melbourne, mid 90s. 80 people. Beer, sweat, everything’s fucked. Was earth shaking. Never repeated. Oh, and the last good Bad Seeds - Tender Prey. No. Don’t care. It’s true.
Bring it. 😜

4:31 - Old Time
3:26, 5:06 - Carnage
5:30 - White Elephant

7:08 - Balcony Man
Too many 8s Melon. At this point I'm worried for Kendricks album

So far, 2021 has been the year of outstanding albums but not necessarily big releases if that makes sense.
@@Evanmnm pleeeassee name some

Strong 5
Thought this was a collaborative album between Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, the writer.
Kinda relieved. That dude is a creep.
Yeh, i agree. Wonder how many mix him up with the writer.
In an alternate universe Anthony has the Dopethrone wizards beard and the wizard has Anthony’s round glasses. I’d like to live in that universe.
All these 8s are making me happy, keep it going Fanty.
I agree with a lot of this. I wonder if the more raw, song-focused approach was a function of them recording the record during lockdown and maybe more piecemeal than what they were accustomed to. It seems that the full Bad Seeds records are worked up a lot with the entire band in a room and while the main ideas typically come from Cave and Ellis, the other players have a more subtle influence on the overall sound. At the same time, I do kind of hope this record is a transition to a return to the Bad Seeds' rowdier side, possibly with a more experimental bent to it. I loved the last three records, but they stand pretty well on their own. Doesn't seem like there's much of a need to go any further down that road. Of course at the end of the day, I'd trust these guys instincts above all else. I'm sure the next Bad Seeds record will blow our minds like they all have.
We NEED a Nick Cave tier list!
Definitely on the same page here for this album. I differ with you on Push the Sky Away in that it's one of my favorite albums of all time, Cave or otherwise. Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen are both lovely with some really standout tracks, but ultimately a bit monotonous, especially the latter. Carnage is a breath of fresh air in its energy and diversity of tone!
Another masterpiece worthy of being among the other genius of this priceless CROONER, which should only be revered after more than 40 years, giving us to drink his magic concoction in constant evolution and revolutionizing the musical devices of all living beings, both for savvy as well as lay people with minimal musical fiber and a bit of poetic understanding. By definition, a genius is one who takes nothingness to turn it into something admirable, capable of changing the environment and our lives in incredible ways and that in the future, make of it a sanctuary like an effigy, to be able to consecrate, this divine envoy , for the rest of time.
Dudes Peerless.
Now Carnage should release an album called Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
First thing I thought of when I heard Hand of God was Anthony facetiously going “hand of god, hand of god.” Was not disappointed.
Would love to hear your thoughts on Jolene by Dolly Parton.
Anthony, mom says you can come over and play Call of Duty. She makes some good dino nuggies.

Shame we haven't had a Cave/Lynch crossover yet.
Anthony, your score matched up with pitchfork. Definitely some underground corruption going on here.
i love every bad seeds album and phase, but my favorite is clearly trilogy phase. i'm so happy that he's still over with the sound yet. carnage is fantastic.
Es más simple. Una catarata de poesía perfectamente declamada y ambientada con el fin de incidir más rápido y más profundo.
El video debería hacerse sobre la lírica de Cave. Es el 90% del disco.
Un 10, sin dudarlo.
The Red Right Melon returns.
The strings arrangement on Lavender Fields is still so beautiful though
Heavy on the 8’s recently aren’t we Tony?
Great review melon man, but please stop undressing me with your eyes, it's really creepy
He's saving his 9-10/10 for Squid's album in may
I really feel like they need to do Grinderman 3. There's cobwebs that need'a blowin' I reckon.
Spot on I reckon. Its getting boring unfortunately, just spoken word over warbling synths. Guitar please! Blixa!
Balcony Man was such a beautiful song to end the album, great stuff
Nick Cave always fucking delivers.
feels great to see nick cave still killing it in 2021
I’m scared. It’s March and there’s no 9s
Hell of a lot of yellow flannels tho
I love Nick's music and I wanted to listen to this record once it came out, but for some reason it made me feel weirdly uncomfortable and anxious. I had to stop listening to it halfway through because I was feeling uneasy. I don't remember the last time I experienced something like that
That's interesting, I find the title track to be extremely calming and comforting. I can see why one would become anxious listening to Hand of God though haha
Melon is somehow surprised that this a NC/WE branded project? How many soundtracks now? The last 3 Bad Seeds records were basically this formula with the other Seeds as session guys. This album is so good. Since Let Love In there have been a few less than great records. Nocturama/Boatman/ghosteen I'm looking at you. Otherwise the releases to include the Soundtracks, Grinderman, and now Carnage are truly a fine older catalog. Carnage took me by surprise. Really solid record.
Just listened to Carnage and it sounds HUGE. The mix feels incredibly spacious.
Anthony's Push the Sky Away opinion hurts every time!
Every time I see the flannel I think it’s a 10/10, every....damn.....time.
I think you should just remind yourself its an 8 and above type flannel. It's been almost 3 years since we got a 10.
nick cave albums ranked plz bb at least when he finishes music because this legend got sooo many bangers
Defo up for a Nick Cave: worst to best video from Melon 🍉
Pls review “El madrileño” by C Tangana, best Spanish album of the century by far. It topped first in debut international albums in Spotify. ❤️
Nice dopethrone in the back on this, also loved this record, had some amazing moments from both Warren and Nick! First comment I've left on your videos so will give it an 8 only because ghosteen was a 9 in my books!
You only like this album because the emotionally potent and timely Carnage finds Nick Cave and Warren Ellis letting loose with the aesthetic they forged on the previous Bad Seeds trilogy.
The first half of this album is STRONG. So strong that I was anticipating giving this album a 10/10. I kept thinking "This is too good to be true"; and so it was. Then the second half happened and it was a major let down. It's more sleepy ambient music that does nothing for me in terms of being engaging. Albuquerque was a nice slower detour after the immediacy of the first half but the album didn't pick up again in terms of energy and by the end I was left feeling really disappointed. Had the 2nd half been more immediate, exciting and ambitious as the first half, you were looking at a 9.7 to a 10 from me. What a tragedy...
Hand of God, Old Time, Carnage, White Elephant.
SCORE: 8.0/10
The 10 will come soon boys, just remain patient.

It will come when Nav puts out his psychedelic baroque noise rap album in the 3rd quarter of 2021!
When I saw Albuquerque was on the tracklist I was kinda hoping it was a cover of the Weird Al magnum opus track but in the style of "The Curse of Milhaven".
