Let’s Agree: If Nick Cave was a music critic, he would’ve given MBDTF a 10

n w o r d
He did say the N word in Saint Huck but if anybody sees that as an admission of racism they are dumb
Only Melon openly calls Kanye the n word.
Dr. Aisaitl and Huck senses something’s wrong.
I'm gonna say the N-word.
*Christian Genius Billionaire Kanye West
Gon be real, as a Christian, i dont personally like the man. He is too boastful and proud, too in your face, too loud of the speck in his brothers eye. Now, this is just my opinion. But i dint like the man, and i dont think hes a good christian.
@@ProTobigen I'm not religious so my opinion may not matter, but I agree with you completely. Kanye is smart, he understands acting this way is an easy path to compassion from Christians and religious folks alike. If he's preaching this stuff 5-10 years down the line I'll believe his devote love of Jesus, until then he's just slimy weasel looking for ways to make money.
Tristan Kennedy do you genuinely think kanye went to gospel and christian music to make money?? literally a bad financial decision for him.
Tristan Kennedy I don’t think it’s directly for the money, he definitely is semi serious abt the Christian thing because he made a whole album about it. However I also think it is a publicity stunt and he is trying to maintain his fame. Said fame also brings money but I don’t think it’s only about the money
@@ProTobigen kanye thinks he's black jesus, lol
I think this is an amazing quote from Cave. if anyone out there is a musician / artist you know that singular vision that you have. Kanye never compromises his vision and you have to respect that. As you said, Kanye could write generic pop songs and chart all the time but his respect to his craft makes him a musical risk taker and icon
Just cuz you say I have to respect it doesn’t mean I do lmao he makes generic pop songs as well as other big name rappers, I feel like we give Kanye an insane amount of credit based on past music tbh bc TLOP and up is pretty mild besides a few hits
@@Kenzoah you're wrong about TLOP. it's okay you'll realize one day how incredible it is.
@@BATTOUSAIBEATS Never understood the TLOP hate, its sooooo good
BATTOUSAI BEATS well let’s not say I’m wrong lmaooo I have my
Opinion and you have yours
TLOP is amazing lol. But, as op said he really does focus on a vision and executes. Yeezus, 808 & Heartbreaks etc. He’s a great artist. Best pod out ruclips.net/video/LdbnTxyhOhc/видео.html
The thing I enjoy about Kanye is that his entire discography is kinda like a “journey”. He’s always changing, both musically and as an individual, so being able to watch his progression as both is pretty cool.
Journey is not about the destination, it’s about the journey itself.
Yep..... until he married the Kardashians and it has gone all down hill from there
caracasaltavista nah, yeezus, tlop and ye (+ ksg) is quality.
Like Bob Dylan's discography
Thats why people like MBDTF so much, because it completed a heros journey. That was his triumphant return from a dark place. With Daytona, Kids See Ghosts, and Ye he was recuperating and reviving from another low point Yeezus and Life of Pablo. Now he's crossing a new threshold as a Christian. Its all Good Mythology
Wow, I'm so early that the comments are actually relevant to the video.
Kylirr Real talk 😂
They're not relevant because you're early, but they're relevant because most people passionately agree with Nick's assertion.

I mean it's hard to disagree, he has one of the most iconic and difficult discographies to rank and every album release is like an event. Fantano even did 2 redux reviews on him despite not doing it for anyone else. He's praised by the normies and music nerds. Great is subjective obviously but it's hard to name another artist like him this century really, maybe Kendrick comes closer than most.
He did a endless redux aswell dude
Kanye said eminem is the best artist
Sherlok Xx lol no.
@@sherlokxx1036 HAHAHAHAHAHA no.
Sherlok Xx maybe before revival lmfao
It's so great to see artists who have been around forever like Nick Cave recognize the value of artists who came later like Kanye instead of just being an old head and saying music used to be better
I'm really feeling it. So many of my other favorite artists talk highly of Ye, Lou Reed, David Lynch and now Nick Cave. The range of artists that have shown him love and the number of times I've seen an artist I love mention Kanye as a big influence is amazing. Brutalism by Idles being inspired by Yeezus was a recent one for me too.
@@kiruakiller3 Bruce Springsteen said he was enthralled with Kanye's live performance of Blood on the Leaves on Later with Jools Holland in 2013. Years after it happened, Bono wrote that he was in the audience of Kanye's Black Skinhead live debut on SNL (also in 2013) and was mesmerized, and called it one of his favorite live performances ever. Author Bret Easton Ellis invited Kanye on his podcast to discuss Yeezus and his ideas around the time it was released as both had mutual fascination with each other's work, and as you mentioned Lou Reed famously raved about Yeezus, and David Lynch wanted to direct a video for Blood on the Leaves.
And this is all acclaim from older musicians for a single album alone. And that too so incredibly jarring and not an easy listen either. Something that most old people would probably put on and think it doesn't even sound like music.
Now consider all the musicians who have praised him for other albums and general career and you have a laundry list of musicians who have been in the industry for decades and appreciate Kanye's art. It's amazing how many older musicians respect Kanye (and hilarious in juxtaposition to their fans who are so dismissive of him).
Kanye’s got at least three classic albums if not more in his discography. He’s definitely one of the most influential of our time so I can definitely see why people say he’s the best of our age.
At least 6 classics dont get it confused
He’s got 4 classics (CD,LR,GRAD,MBDTF)
5 if we’re counting KSG
3 REALLY great albums (808s,Yeezus,TLOP)

I mean, is that even a question anymore? This man has stayed decades ahead of the curve for years on years now. He's been a standout, in and outside of genres, reminiscent of greats like MJ. He's doesn't make the music we want, but the music we need
It's arguable that Kanye is the best of the 21st century so far, and I've made that argument before. But I did NOT need Jesus Is King.
Lol
The new project was ass but Kanye imo is a top 3 artist of all time

Kanye -- Saint Pablo
Ender13123 one of my favourite verses of all time
Ender13123 the Einstein bar ruins an otherwise amazing verse. Einstein’s legacy is so far from what a musician could create. Not necessarily any better or worse but so different there’s no point in comparing the two. Just a silly cocky line in the middle of a fantastic verse that is otherwise very tasteful in its absurd cockiness.
@@drewp.weiner5708 I actually love that about him, *in the music*. I think it's a part of what makes it great. Outside of the music though, it gets pretty cringeworthy. Compare yourself to Einsein in a song if you want. Don't call yourself Walt Disney in an interview.
Omar Hassan ya looking at the night sky wondering if God’s gonna say hi
@@drewp.weiner5708 I can understand where his god complex comes from and I enjoy it in a way. Him being bipolar and having his manic-depressing moments might fuel his willingness to being cocky as a way to cover his insecurities. Or at least that was the vibe I got from Ye. Plus, Kanye wouldn't be Kanye if it wasn't for his obnoxiousness
Kanye’s particularly interesting because he kind of blurs the lines between “art” and “artist,” and not just in a performance artist kind of way (at least, not at all primarily). His allegiance is solely with his art, not the fans or fame, but the art, and because of that allegiance, he is willing to offer himself as a sacrifice for the good of his art. His art exposes the weird duality of narcissism and sacrifice, which explains the continuous implicit and explicit Christian themes within his work.
And to see sacrifice and narcissism as some sort of duality that belongs together is kind of, well... mad. It doesn’t really flow off the tongue well or resonate in the mind well. The only time sacrifice and narcissism are seen together is when one is disguised somehow (meaning only one, not both, are present). But Kanye combines both in a way so crazy as to make it work.

Nick's opening answer is exactly the reason Ed Sheeran (and artists of his ilk) is/are an utterly pointless and vapid "artist/s". He caters exactly to his mindless listeners and doesn't care for the people who aren't his fans. He has no intention of winning over people indifferent to his music. Streaming has actually provided an extra financial safety blanket for these types of musicians and is needlessly prolonging their careers. He takes no risks, pushes no boundaries, but simply farms the preordained casual fans of his music. One day it'll wear off and Sheeran will be just like any 70s/80s radio star that our parents mention once in a blue moon but no one really thinks about in their day to day lives.
Justice so true
I'm saving this
Except for Divide (and maybe Multiply), which was admittedly a cash grab (even Ed Sheeran said that his objective with this record was to make a bestselling album), I have to disagree. Ed Sheeran usually doesn't pander to audiences and jump on whatever's popular. Literally his first album was No. 5 collaborations project, a collaboration album with legendary grime artists which fucking bangs to this day. His follow up, is a great fusion of pop, hip-hop and folk with glints of pretty impressive songwriting. According to Sheeran, his next album is going to be a lo-fi album. His fans don't expect him to make a lofi album after making one of the highest selling pop albums of our time. But he is doing that now. In one of his interviews, he literally said that the sole objective of his career is to make an album that's timeless.
Yeah, Divide doesn't scream of subversive creativity. It was engineered to sell records by Ed and even he doesn't really like a bulk of what he's written. But to fair, almost every pop artist is guilty of making a few cash-grabs. Even Kanye said that he fucking dislikes Gold Digger. He also said he wrote it because he knew it'll sell records.
Just like people shouldn't judge Kanye through shit like Gold Digger and Stronger (which is a great song, but again, it's not a good representation of Kanye's discography, people shouldn't judge Ed through shit like Shape of You and Galway Girl
Kanye will always be my number one. He’s not just a musician, he’s an artist. He prides himself in fixing and tuning his music until he feels like it’s perfect. It’s the reason why he comes into anyone’s mind when they think of greatest album of all time. He’s very flawed but so Are we, we all are flawed we all go through phases and acts of our life we go through heart break, go through struggles, go through rebirth in ourselves, changes that change our mindsets, the difference is Kanye was able to create beautiful pieces of art from these phases. He’s so human that people point more of his flaws than all the good he’s done for Chicago.

i think nick cave is right. when you consider that taste in music is subjective and just focus on artistry itself then kanye indeed is the greatest artist, who became absurdly successful, completely mainstream and yet never sold himself to any norm, spending his entire career doing exactly what he felt like with no strings attached. whether you like his music or not (and thats beyond the point here), kanye is indeed an absolute artist only loyal to his own vision, becoming what the punk movement only aspired of being but never did

FoddyFogHorn literally 250 years of classical composers and then a rapper who puts together random samples into new music
2 questions need to be answered:
From how long ago did “our time” of music start?
Does “artists” include bands?
Electron no just single artist, no bands. And our time would include the oldest person of the generation we can go back to, so our time is essentially the past 100 years. That’s the easiest way to measure it because we know there’s a few 97 year olds out there and a very very small number of people above 100, so our time to keep it simple has to be the century. Kanye West is the best artist of this century, is what nick cave is claiming and I can’t disagree. Especially when we get into the science of how much help or not the best artist receive. For example kanye west has less help than Michael Jackson did. Michael couldn’t make an instrumental, he was a singer and a dancer and wrote music. Kanye on the other hand is a rapper, singer, writer, producer, and then there’s garment and footwear design which is all still art. So when we say Artist are we talking their entire package or just music.

Kanye is a living epitome of free thought and self-expression. He is the greatest artist we’ve seen in a very long time.
When Nick talks of madness and derangement, I didn't read it as mental health at all. Instead, it sounds more like he likens madness to stubbornness. Being so caught in your concept and mentality that you don't allow it to be influenced. A commitment to your ideas so deep that you don't bog it down with trying to internally question it or take into account too many second opinions on it, lest you dilute the premise.
He’s definitely my favorite living artist. I think Nick is pretty spot on. I think it’s Kanye’s willingness and uncompromising will that pushes everything he does to the next level. I saw him at Pigeon Forge a couple of days ago for Sunday Service and he had approximately 38,000 flowers sent to the theater and surrounded the stage with them. I was socked when I felt some that they were all real. It’s such a small detail and must have costed more money than it was worth but Kanye had a vision and wanted to execute it no matter the cost. He’s always been that way the Yeezus tour is a prime example he was losing money every night but all he cared about was sharing his vision with the world.
"I don't even like likes" -Kanye West
I love Kanye. No one is the greatest artist of our time, or of any time though. Anyone who says such things about anyone are just fanboys.

People say Kanye has 3 back to back classics but I would argue 7 classics. I say that because 808s was literally 5-6 years ahead of its it's time. Old Hip-Hop heads HATED it but younger kids like me LOVED it. And around 5 years later (2013-2014) what took place? People like Travis, Uzi, and Juice WRLD openly saying that album influenced then to create their musical sound. That sounds like a classic to me. Then you have MBDTF, and WTT which are certified classics. Next there's Yeezus which was near hated upon release but 5-6 years later (last year or so) it is now revered as a classic. TLOP is now getting into the classic debate as well. . . also 5-6 years later (currently). Kanye West arguably has 7 classics out of his 9 albums, he is truly a visionary
He is the greatest artist of our days and I don't even listen to his music
Start with College Drop and move on from there's. For me, his flawless album is Late Registration. I don't even skip a song on that album
I think he's the greatest famous artist. There's a possibility that a better artist is out there, however they certainly don't have enough recognition if so.
@Mutombo also listen some of his un release stuff. Good Friday is a great mixtape
You should, your missing out
@Mutombo perhaps
kanye is the greatest artist of our generation and one of the all time greatest of all time. its undeniable
Weird that he left out “ let’s agree”
I think Nick's reasoning for Kanye being the greatest artist is a terrible metric and doesn't even give Kanye the title of GOAT. If a singular vision is what he wants, then when we rank albums, is Speeding bullet 2 heaven a GOAT album? What about angelic 2 the core? They don't compromise themselves but they're fucking trash. Have death grips been compromised? There are plenty of artists out there that haven't sacrificed their vision and don't have mediocre albums like Kanye does.
Kanye has made it known that his goal is to be famous and recognized as a great artist. In lyrics he brags about the Kardashians being the new Jackson's, his "superstar family", bragging about his clothing line. And in many interviews he talks about how he's a god and a great artist and shit. I think it's clear that Kanye does a lot of his music to be controversial about it and to illicit a reaction. A goal of his is to become more famous and to be regarded as cutting edge. So no, I don't think Kanye has a singular vision that propels him. If his "singular vision" is to be famous and be known as the GOAT, then that's compromising his personal feelings towards music to gain traction about people. Kanye isn't the GOAT imo. A discography with a good amount of mediocre albums doesn't make you the goat no matter your purpose, and kanyes purpose all along isn't to make good music that he likes, it's to feed his ego.
I utterly disagree, first of all, discography full of mediocre albums?, like are you being serious?. Kanye has an ego but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t care for his art. He has a braggadocious profound character but still is someone who has regrets and isn’t afraid to let it out in public.
This is my first RUclips comment
Nolan Galica congrats
boom boom clap
Congratulations. You'll be copy/pasting in no time ☺️🤙🏾
Where am I
it sucks
What I find especially interesting about this is that someone like Nick Cave has been around for a good long while and yet is absolutely more than willing to give these modern and forward-thinking artists like Kanye their due respect. As a huge Cave fan and a semi-casual Kanye fan, this is super cool to see unfold.
He's right
I think the criteria isn't complete: if music doesn't communicate effectively, you can't expect listeners to be touched emotionally. So the criteria should reflect that too; not just how "vision-centric" or challenging the musician is, but also how effectively they can communicate with the listener.
Exit Sign this is valid, but I would say Kanye tends to be a pretty effective communicator as well. At least in terms of emotion. Especially on Yeezus and 808s
@@nedkuczmynda3782 Yeah I do agree with this too
I don't think Nick is saying Kanye is the greatest artist right now. But that he is the single artist who is least swayed by anything other than what he needs to express.
Wow. The greatest artist of our time calling Kanye the greatest artist of our time.
It is very interesting to think about the idea that great art requires great pain and suffering. I also sometimes think about whether musicians, painters, writers, ect, tend to secretly or unknowingly hold onto their mental struggles or tragedies in order to produce great work. Do "genius" artists have an addiction to their own pain? Not to sound too pretentious, but I recently read Malcolm Gladwell's Talking to Strangers, and in it he mentions how successful poets have a strangely high suicide rate. I wonder what the death stats are on musicians. Sorry for the long comment, I just find this topic so interesting.
Kanye perfectly encapsulates our time and culture. Kanye's artistic vision's influence has had a dramatic effect on all avenues of art. I agree with Nick even if I'm not a huge fan of Mr. West.
Kanye has become more than an artist and exemplifies what it means to be cool today. Incredibly successful sneaker line and a fashion icon, pioneered the artistic use of autotune, married a Kardashian. And now that he's established himself as the coolest man of our time, he has the freedom to do absolutely anything he wants.
lol I hope this is sarcasm.
Cringe
@@professorpancakes6545 Not sarcasm. Name a dude in his 40s with more influence and relevance in popular music and fashion (and in turn, coolness).
frogjumpgood now I know you're joking. Pop music and fashion are about conformity have literally nothing to do with being cool!
yikes
“I’m this eras greatest artists” what was that antnee??
How can it be Kanye when it’s actually Nick himself?
He is definitely one of the greatest.
Magneto by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds is one of the best songs of all time
Alex Swedock I agree
@@Miller14100 "The urge to kill someone was basically overwhelming" - most relateable lyric ever
you could replace any his song with Magneto and I would still like this comment.
Anthony you can’t say that a “negro” can’t be considered for greatest artist of all time
there is no such thing as the greatest artist of "some time period" time
So there's just the greatest artist ever? Surely putting, for example, Kendrick Lamar and Beethoven in the same competition is unfair to both artists?
I think that you can't answer this question until you're no longer in "our time"
He's been relevant for almost 2 decades, I think it's a safe assumption at this point
Tragedy artists are the worst.
Art is food. Art is life. Art is happiness
The correct answer is Devin Townsend
Hate him or love him, I'm sure we can all agree that *everybody* is glad that Kanye isn't Drake, just making soulless "hits" one after the other - instead, making what he wants to make, regardless of criticism or concern for people who aren't vibing
Let’s argue: Elliott Smith is under appreciated and/or underestimated!!
And: are you ever going to review a Elliott Smith album?! That would be awesome!!
Thanks for everything you do... it is pretty great and enlightening!! 😊
dude... yes. elliott smith is literally the most underrated artist ever.
I think Elliott Smith had a knack for lyrics that were descriptive and utilized metaphors in way that captured things I thought couldn’t be expressed but still were simplistic enough to not be purple prose. And his way with harmony was fucking crazy, like how the song “I didn’t understand” was acapella yet I didn’t realize it for years because of how beautifully he layered his voices harmonizing with himself. He definitely has a prolific discography that I don’t think gets enough attention aside from a few songs like “Miss Misery” or “Between the Bars” (which are both good songs don’t get me wrong.)
I do on the other hand think that he is definitely appreciated in the sphere of musicians and sad bois alike, maybe he isn’t as popular or well known as I think he deserves to be but I do think a lot of people understood how genius he really was.
@@linseyspolidoro5122 Good comment.
Elliott is one of my favs alongside Sufjan ofcourse.
There is no argument to be made on Kanye being the greatest artist of our generation. He just is...
we love legends stanning legends
Can we PLEASE have the As Good As Dead review melon??
It's ok to be wrong, nick
Honestly Kanye helped break artists away from their record labels and he helped point out that the power is in the voice not the megaphone. Without him saying fuck you to def jam I don’t think frank ocean would’ve given a fuck you to his label
“Kayne cares about his fans” he’s a god damn wannabe demagogue. The last few years feels like he’s want to be a Televangelist.
How is he a demagogue when he constantly makes everyone angry
