Yes and no. I sometimes don't want everyone to know about him. Just us guys. I know that's stupid but..... How can I say this... It's almost like I know a secret that most don't deserve to know? Stupid huh?

I recommend doing this for: Lou Reed, Brian Eno, Tom Waits, The Cure, David Bowie, Bauhaus/Peter Murphy, Swans, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, Yo La Tango, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, and the biggest challenge of them all, The Fall.

i don't usually comment on stuff, but as a Nick Cave fan of far too many years, I have to say that what you did here, my friend, was brilliant. Furthermore, it is a testament to the greatness of my favorite lyricist. The eloquence with which you describe songs, and the intelligence and the flow of your thoughts are a treat. If Nick Cave were to watch this, he would be honored. Thanks.

I generally don't like double albums much as I always end up thinking it would be more enjoyable if the weaker stuff was cut, but it's one of the few exceptions for me where there really isn't any weaker stuff. Looking forward to your thoughts on Skeleton Tree.

  • @TheClever69

Nick Cave is probably my favourite songwriter ever. I'm a singer/songwriter myself and his style of lyricism is a huge influence on me, along with people like Roger Waters, David Bowie, Mike Patton and Morrissey. I think my personal favourite Bad Seeds record is probably No More Shall We Part, I just find it to be a perfect album, and Skeleton Tree is so heartbreaking, I nearly teared up when I first heard Girl In Amber. Truly a one-of-a-kind musician in every sense. I also agree with you about O Children, that song is beautiful, probably my favourite song by Cave, either that or Hallelujah. He's got so many great songs it's hard to decide. Great video, looking forward to seeing who you do for the next one.

    • @deepcuts

I genuinely feel like people that have lived alongside Nick's music have had the opportunity to explore something very eye opening, very beautiful and very unique. Thanks for watching mate, I have a few good ideas for the next video

Great video. I just decided to dig into Nick Cave's discography after being completely stunned by Ghosteen, which is staggering and incredible. I always thought of him as sort of a goth from "The Mercy Seat" or "Red Right Hand" but honestly I haven't really known more of his music than a few tracks. But Ghosteen just completely blew me away. I know it's about the tragic loss of his son, but something about the album feels far more universal to me. I can't help thinking of the record as a sort of elegy to the world we thought we lived in before the onrushing chaos that is consuming it began. Yeah, that universal.

"It feels like the band is still trying to find their feet." Wow. 'Your Funeral, My Trial' is my favourite! The way the band plays here sounds very, very original to me. Such a beautiful, rambling, sweaty, organic, dirty sound. Blixa Bargeld is brilliant on this record. The atmosphere is breathtaking. Quintessential album really, to me. I'm also a fan of Kicking Against The Pricks: such a surprising, varied, fun record. I guess I have a bit of a similar thing with Sonic Youth's output: despite all the classic and often brilliant music from later on, the stuff from the eighties sounds most compelling and fresh to me. And it's not a question of nostalgia, since I discovered both Cave's and SY's music the second half of the nineties only. In the earlier albums I just hear more raw, urgent, unfiltered talent and originality. Later on the music and the productions become more ... streamlined, I guess, but not necessarily better (at least to my ears). Anyway, great channel, enjoying it, thanks, cheers.

Your Funeral, My Trial was such an amazing and cohesive album during that era of The Bad Seeds, and is best enjoyed in one sitting. I think that’s when they really “matured”, and while I love Tender Prey it feels like a bit more of a hodgepodge. Not to mention, Cave himself even considers there to be some poor production and performances and Tender Prey due to personal issues.

I wish I was as articulate as you so that I could more meaningfully convey my appreciation of your work covering one of my favorite artists. What a clever and complete comment about Cave and BS’s albums. I do agree that Nocturama is the only album which lacks of inspiration. All the comments are acute, precise and full of understanding of Cave’s genius. How many artists can produce such quality albums and succeed in a new approach every time?
IMO « no more shall we part » is large better than the comment: romantic, freaky and a tremendous mastering of chaos on some tracks. Thx very much for this video

This is probably the first time the youtube autoplay algorithm (after a solid week of purely watching Nick Cave songs) gave me content that was innovative, vibrant and well executed. And it happened to be about my all time favourite artist. My most played playlist on itunes, basically consists of all the songs you've mentioned + other favourites like We Real Cool, Easy Money, etc...
I've struggled with explaining to my (rather basic) friends why I listen to macabre songs about murders and blues named after emerging physics theories, and this sums it up eloquently in a way I never could.
Looking forward to watching your Skeleton Tree review!

Great to hear this review of his discography. The Grinderman albums are essential NC stuff IMHO. Skeleton Tree is very chilling & haunting, with NC's vocals, ever so full of emotion, going to another level and displaying a absolute sense of connectedness and fragility (even though much of the material was partly developed before the tragedy of his son's passing).
If you want another subject.....The Cure wouldn't be a bad place to visit.

Thank you Oliver! I saw this link and thought, "How could anyone cover all of Nick Cave's incredible library?" But you did! And brilliantly so I have to say! I listened straight through to the end and agree with most all you say -(though "Your Funeral My Trial" is a personal favourite) Like you, my intro to the band was "Murder Ballads" - a shockingly brilliant, moving, terrifying, and surprisingly hilarious album I think is truly essential. From there I became a devotee - listening onward and backward to all they've done and again, like you, consistently shocked by the range , inventiveness, skill, and creative high wire act that is Nick Cave. His film scores and live shows are truly life-enhancing . Now I'm lost in "Skeleton Tree" - an immensely sad, beautiful, and incredibly hopeful experience - transcendent. ( And that it could only have been done by the same man who wrote "Scum" only serves to make me love it all the more) I hope he knows somehow what he means to so many of us. Cheers, Tom.

Hey! Great guide, HOWEVER I’d love to see a follow-up now that Skeleton Tree and Ghosteen have been released, and my GOD, those are a couple albums worth talking about. I think I read that he is working on a new release for 2024, so maybe after that make a follow-up featuring the 3 newer albums and maybe even take that time to touch on some of his film score albums, maybe even include Grinderman…? I’ll stay hopeful.
Anyway, I also saw Nick and the Bad Seeds on the Push The Sky Away tour. What a great album and what a great set list for that show at The Ace Hotel here in LA. One of my favorite tracks on that album (and a completely underrated/overlooked gem) is “We Real Cool”. It is so moody and creepy, and live it was pretty amazing.
    In conclusion, great vid! 🙃

Man, this is the kinda stuff I love. I'm a musician myself, and ever since I started recording my own stuff, I've been really interested in the history surrounding my main musical heroes, and this was really cool! I'd only really listened to From Her To Eternity, Push the Sky Away, Junkyard, Murder Ballads, and a few things from Let Love In, but this was really informative. Great stuff mate.

While Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds is a name that I've been aware of for much of my life (I'll soon be 35), I really only ever got into them when I first heard Jubilee Street on a local indie radio station. I was immediately hooked. I only own both that album, and also Skeleton Tree. In Prague back in December, I got to see One More Time With Feeling at a local theater with a good friend. Also, prior to that mega trip that took me through Prague, it was announced that Cave & Co would be touring North America this summer, and I got lucky with a ticket for their show in Pittsburgh (the day after seeing U2's 30th anniversary tour for their seminal Joshua Tree album, also in Pittsburgh) in June (and, I may also see them in Prague this Fall, if I find myself there again, inshallah).
As Cave has soooooo much music, I have been hesitant to start acquiring more of his older music, as I honestly felt overwhelmed as to where to start. Both this video, as well as Cave & Co's forthcoming, mega (three discs, I think?) best of release will assuredly help to get me started on my musical journey!

Been waiting for a video like this forever; love to see more soon!
Personally, I'd consider their "Golden Run" to start with "Tender Prey" as opposed to "Henry's Dream", mainly because I massively enjoy "The Good Son" and the more sentimental approach taken on the album.
Would have liked to have seen "John Finn's Wife" and maybe another track from "The Firstborn is Dead", but as is, this playlist looks like it shaped up quite nicely.
Oh, and my vote will always go for Tom Waits (since I know Lou Reed's career is a lot longer and a bit more difficult to navigate), although it might make a lot of sense to do a run-through of the Doors albums. I've always found a lot of Doors influence (whether intentionally or not) in Cave's songs, so it's not really too hard a bridge to cross. Plus, they only had six "real" albums, if we discount the stuff after Morrison died, so it wouldn't be quite as huge.
    Good video!

Ive found Abattoir/Lyre to be their most accessible album. It's the one I tend to recommend people start with, then move forward or backward in discography depending on what aspect of the sound they glom onto the most.
I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on Skeleton Tree now that that's had some years to percolate. For me, Rings of Saturn is the track that sticks. I really couldn't figure out what kind of sound that ethereal hook was made of. Imagine my eyes going big when I watch a video of it live and realize that sound is The Bad Seeds' voices! Just a magical song, lyrically and musically.

It was a lot to take in, but did you mention his rejection letter to MTV's request to honor him a lifetime achievement award? It's one of my favorite glimpses into his motivations of his music and how he is compelled to make it, but not for awards or trophies. He's truly an artist down to his core. Thanks again!

One of my favourtie cuts off Tender Prey is Watching Alice. Loved the track the first time I heard it, it sounds almost like a wistful love song, complete with that gorgeous harmonica solo. Then you start paying attention to the lyrics...
I've heard a couple of interpertations that this song is about Lewis Carrol obsessing over his muse, which if true makes the whole song even creepier. Which, of course, is why we love early Nick Cave, isn't it?
My favourite album though is a toss-up between Murder Ballads and The Boatman's Call, depending on my mood. The latter just absolutely destroys me if I listen to it when I'm feeling low, though.

    • @deepcuts
      @deepcuts  8 лет назад

That's a great fact, it certainly makes Watching Alice a far more disturbing listen. Classic Cave! I really love both those records, I never seem to not be in the mood for Murder Ballads, which might reveal more about my psyche than I want...ha.

The sort of channel I've been looking for for ages. Love it so much already.
If I can make a combination of a request and suggestion, once you begin to have a larger following (I'm certain you'll continue to grow rapidly), longform videos that last are closer to half an hour (and beyond) tend to be both more rewarding for the maker and the audience.
Just something I've observed from watching channels over the ages, which you probably already knew.

      @deepcuts  8 лет назад +2

Thanks Timothy, to be honest I decided to start this channel because I spent years trying to find a music channel that wasn't just doing reviews - I love watching reviews but it's nice to be able to dive into music history, the way genres have been shaped, esoteric little sub-genres etc. So I will try my best to deliver what I was looking for!
100% agree in terms of longform videos, my guides will always be that sort of length (and longer) and I'll be creating new series as the channel continues forward. Thanks again for watching and getting involved!

i loved this video ! its very cool to see someone talking about nick in a more expansive manner, iv written a few amateur guides/articles myself, however i think it was a bittuva mistake to leave out 'mutiny ! / the bad seeds ep' from the birthday party's discography as i think it bridges the gap between the birthday party & the bad seeds. i also think 'your funeral' ought to be given more thought as it does the similar job of bridging 'from her to eternity' to 'tender prey.' their 80s work is sorely overlooked here, friend. i'd heavily recommend all of those albums + 'mutiny' to anyone who is really interested in nick.

Oh, the mustache years, lol. This was a really enjoyable retrospective of one of my favorite artists. "Henry's Dream" is my fav album overall (also lots of love for "Murder Ballads"), but I think "The Mercy Seat" is one of the best songs ever written hands down. Seconding the recommend of "Live Seeds" to anyone exploring his work, too. "Brother My Cup is Empty" is even better than the studio version. "New Morning" on that album is just a beautiful, beautiful song - almost unexpectedly so. That's the one that regularly moves me to tears.

I disagree with you a lot on this, but that only goes to show the beauty of Nick Cave's discography. It's made so diverse and comprehensive yet the band almost never falters to deliver something compelling in each of their releases. Every different "incarnation" of the band's sound covers a different ground set to capture a specific set of hearts. Point is, any one of their albums can be anyone's favorite. There's not one bad Nick Cave album by consensus -- you can't say this for a lot of bands, no. Concerning this guide of yours, in my opinion (and this is just me, ok?), I think you underrated Nick's 80s releases inordinately. I mean, how much more insane, deathly, funny, epic and gory can music get than in From Her to Eternity? The song "Saint Huck" alone is one hell of a monster: the horrendous, sprawling, hulking, dilapidated, maniacal, unholy, evil, poisonous sound of that thing! One of rock music's most extreme moments in my book. And it isn't just extreme, It's somewhat elegant and accomplished as well, and that's what makes it compelling as a work of art.
Or how closer can music sound so near to the abyss of death than in Your Funeral My Trial? To me, that album is the greatest goth record ever, for whatever goth is worth. On tracks like "She Fell Away", "Stranger than Kindness" and the title track, the breath of death is so thick in the air it's almost tangible and suffocating. And in the song "Hard-on for Love" I could hear the wildest ever celebration of death and the macabre. "Scum" is probably one of the basest things I've heard on record. When it comes to this kind of stuff, Nick only has competition in Michael Gira.
As for The Firstborn is Dead and Kicking Against the Pricks, I'm not too crazy about those albums either. I must say I haven't listened enough to the latter, and somehow I just don't feel the craving to listen to the former after it's first and by far best track, "Tupelo".
