Hey Scotty I don’t know any other way to message you to ask but can you please do a video on bestline engine oil additive. No one has a video on it anyone other than the original one showing how good it is so please do a video on this oil I think there’s a reason why they don’t see it in stores with all other oil additive cause I swear it would out do any other brand. I used it and it was better than any oil additive I’ve ever used please order some and do a video on it
My 2023 Venza and 2021 Ridgeline AWD were very helpful on the hills of Pittsburgh. This year’s snowfall were quite slippery and the AWD helped maintain drive. YMMV.
@scottykilmer could you please do an update on this video with the Highlander years to look for and avoid, and also a comparison with the Honda Pilot and Acura MDX?
I have had no problems with my 2018 FORD EDGE 2.7 L engine with 40,000 on it . I do all the maintenance myself and have no issues with the all wheel drive system to date . Change the oil every 4,000 miles not 6,000 . The twin turbo get a good work out from time to time pushing it to 120 mph when it is safe to do so . I am a Ford guy with all my vehicle choices since 1992 when i bought my first E 350 15 passenger van and sold it in 2015 . It also was a great people and cargo hauling vehicle with no issues the engine never used oil and the transmission was extremely solid .
I drive a 2003 mercury sable station wagon with the 3.0 duratec V-6. For me its perfect, lots of rear load space and the low roofline makes roof racking my kayak easy. I have looked at other "suv's" but they just don't have the cargo space that I want and they are insanely priced.
7:32 Toyota applied for the Grand Highlander trademark in the US in December of 2020. Parts of this video are obviously several years old. The Grand Highlander debuted nearly 2 years ago.
The Ecoboost engine, is the worst engine ever built.. everyone I have ever known that has owned one , including my wife, had major problems around 50,000 mile ,, 2014-2018 is junk , and now all American made cars are junk . Anything with a turbo engine is absolutely junk ..
Best to stick to nat-asp 1.6, 2.0, Duratec's. If ya want boost, boost a nat-asp 1.6, or 2.0 Duratec, etc. My advice is actually supercharging on a stock nat-asp 1.6 Duratec. (2017++)
I had a 2015 Focus ST from new with the eco boost engine. Had 155K when I traded it in. Ran like it did when it was brand new. Not a single problem with the motor. The AC compressor went at 60k, and I had a lot of problems with the fuel evap recovery system…but the motor was strong and solid.
@@DetroitMicroSoundI have a 2012 Fusion SEL with the 3.0 Duratec. This engine is very reliable as well. The original design came from Porsche, which was later sold to Ford.
THANK YOU for the DETAILED explanation of AWD to FWD etc... GOOD info.. and helps to make a GOOD decision.. one I was about to screw up (as usual.. ha)
Duratec is my choice of engines when buying Ford cars (I hear that the 4.6 V8 in the Panther platform is great too but I've never owned one). They're well designed, well built and naturally aspirated. This family of engine has a lot of Mazda DNA and the 3.0 V6 Duratec in particular is a Porsche design. I have a 2012 Fusion SEL 3.0 V6 93k miles, and all I've had to replace is the purge valve and one interior door handle. I love this car, as it's comfortable and peppy. The 6F35 transmission is mostly good, although I remain confident that my engine will outlive both the transmission and chassis. I'll personally never buy Ecoboost or anything with a turbo. Naturally aspirated is always the way to go for longevity.
Hey maybe some one can tell me sents Scotty here won't tell me what is better to use for a leaky head gasket blue magic seal up or blue devil head gasket sealer witch is better ??? Thanks
Here’s something . I want an accord. But I don’t want to want an accord. I want to want an excursion. But, I’d take a 3rd/4th gen explorer with a V-8. I’d love to have a F-350 that looks and rides like a peterbuilt. So I could open the hood, and easily work on everything.
Still driving an 88 full size jimmy (squarebody) if not that a 96 tahoe. If I need more room my 91 burban fits the mold. While yeah it would be nice to have a newerish vehicle not sure where to start. I can't say I'm a fan of cuvs and suvs these days are stupid expensive with a boatload of electronics. A truck would be cool but who still has a v8 with 4wd and not cost a few souls to purchase.
Even a minivan has advantages over a SUV/crossover. Lee Iacocca hoped the minivan would replace the station wagon. Unfortunately the auto manufactures don't offer station wagons in America. They only want to make SUVs
AWD is only half the equation, your tires are the other half. My 2022 Highlander with Blizzaks is shockingly good in the snow, the wifes FWD Elantra with x-ices isn't even close. If you live in the snow belt AWD and good snows are a must.
I had a 2007 Mercury Milan that was a great car up until 120,000 miles when I found out the 3.0 V6 had a rear main seal leak. I kept it until about 130,000 miles when I finally got tired of putting cardboard underneath it😂 I think at the time it was around $1,800 to fix. Had i fixed it and kept driving it I know I could've gotten way over 200K on that car.
That's pretty much the only bad thing about the 3.0 Duratec is that it's known to leak oil at some point, but there are plenty of engines that do that or burn oil at higher mileage. As long as people remember to check and top off, like you said you probably would've gotten over 200k out of it. I'm at only 93k miles so it's not leaking on me... Yet.
Hi Scotty, Please answer. We have Honda Accord 2008 with 278,000 km and still going. Recently we change valve cover gasket and plug gaskets. The silicon used was Elring Dirko, which is not good quality I think so. Know I am worried of some silicone broke off and mixed with engine oil it might damage the engine, because I am feeling the engine sound becoming little louder. Kindly advise what to do
That was a very good video!!! Hey Scotty, have you ever seen that pic, where there is a comparison between a garbage canister in India in 1990's, to one of those new Tesla Cyber Trucks?? Let me know if you need more info.
Whats your opinion on improving Tech without Proving tech. WE had/Have some old great engines and small modification could make them get better mileage. Insted they try to Use tech that Just does not Fit the vehicles they use themm on.
Get a performance AWD like a GLK350 4 Matic, it puts more than half its torque to the rear wheels and can transfer 95% of its torque to any one wheel! 🎉
American OEMs have never (imo) produced an exceptional 4-cylinder. Perhaps I'm wrong - someone correct me. I thought the Chevy Vega GT was a nice effort, but could be no better than the powertrain.
Great video. Marketing is everything, duping people to overpay for things they don't need and aren't dependable. Car or Truck is what I've owned. MPG around town, a 6.5' bed and 4x4 for adventure, vacation, hunting, and hauling a trailer.
I drive a Mustang in winter. Even with effectively the best winter tires on the market for it's tire size it's a technical drive for 4 months of the year. It takes way more care and attention than non winter driving, rather than knowing when my car will slip or my breaks will lock and I'll side it's always a big question during winter. Some places it's effectively the same as summer driving. Other places I'm not sure my car won't slide backwards down a hill if I come to a stop. It's not the car's fault it's wildly unsuited for winter. Driving an AWD vehicle is so much easier in terms of not slipping and even just starting from a stop on a road. Each stop light is a balance between accelerating and not losing traction and shooting rocks at cars behind me. Not having ABS is one of those strange things that is extremely uncommon now days that I just have to live with because a new car when my current car still works is just a waste of money. Lucky for everyone, we all know it's winter so every vehicle accelerates and brakes like it's a heavy truck. People check cross traffic at lights to make sure someone isn't sliding through the intersection because the city has the speed of the yellows too short for really optimal winter driving, which would be a waste of time the other 8 months of the year. I wish I could buy a hybrid that had all electric motors at each wheel, an ICE that was charging a battery or a battery super capacitor combo and just ditch all the transmission and it's different types force transfer and control systems. Not use some new high tech fragile super small super efficient engine just a normal small engine without a turbo so it will last forever. Have the battery pack be small enough (maybe 15kwh) that you can pick it up in 2 or 3 parts and replace it without having to lift the car body off the frame to get at the battery. Maybe have an access hatch under the back seats or trunk.
Hey Scotty, I recently picked up an 05 pilot with 84k miles. 1 owner. It was bought at an auction from a tax repo, I have no record of maintenance other than a fresh oil change. No rush from crawling under it. What maintenance would you recommend doing preventative. It needs a power steering pump so I plan on replacing the water pump and timing belt to be safe
Sonce your doing the water pump new thermostat, and coolant system drain and refill. I'd check the tyranny fluid and if dirty I would drain and refill it as well. Do forget to check the battery. Hope you get another 200k miles on it .
Firstly, this video is over 2 years old. Secondly, the Highlander Hybrid has an Electrically activated rear diff which means no transfer case & only activates on demand. So it is practically a FWD and in snowy or slippery conditions it’s a front-wheel biased on-demand AWD with instant torque from the HV Hybrid battery. Thirdly, I’ve never seen a Highlander Hybrid fishtail in snow/Ice/Sleet/Slush so the AWD can save your life & prevent a potential collision. Fourthly, the extra high clearance, the towing capacity, the extra space & cargo is well worth buying it over a Sedan. Go to a hardware store to pick up 2x4s & you don’t need to rent a truck for that. Fifthly & Lastly, please NEVER EVER compare a Toyota to a Ford especially when Ford Explorer is the one you’d compare to the Highlander since they’re both in the same class of midsize SUV (or CrossOver)
FORD SIGMA (Duratec 1.6/2.0+) My 2017 Fiesta is a 1.6, nat! She goes, and goes, and goes, and goes.....And quick for her capacity! Thanks mostly to YAMAHA. 😁 ......AND sounds 100X more beautiful than a direct.
When Ford switched to the 4.0 liter SOHC V6 engine with the 5 timing chains from the 4.0 liter OHV engine in 2001. Ford Explorer quality went down the toilet. Had a 2002 Explorer had to have transmission replaced under warranty. Then the engine blew up when one of the cheap plastic timing chain guides cracked and jump timing. I'll never buy another Ford ever again.
My neighbor has had a 2022 Explorer since new with the 2.3 Ecoboost and doesn't have any issues with it. Personally, I'm not comfortable with buying a turbo engine but to each is own.
I have a 2016 mitsubishi islander sport. With 4 wheel drive, always front wheel drive. Unless I switch it to automatic or locked ninety five thousand miles on it and have had no issues, ten thousand of those are mine

As long as people remember to check and top off, like you said you probably would've gotten over 200k out of it. I'm at only 93k miles so it's not leaking on me... Yet.
Oldsmobile had the best V6 engine
3.8 GM v6 one of the most reliable engines you can buy. Pontiac, buick, olds, maybe even in some chevies...bulletproof
If there was any reliable wagon in reasonable price I would buy it today! Station wagons are the best for families!
You didn’t explain which years were better for used vehicle buys for the Highlander, only the Explorer.
2011 Highlander here. Great ride for many reasons.
What year was the ecplorer called the exploder?
So which ones are the bad Toyotas?
Hi Scotty,
Please answer. Kindly advise what to do
Hey, Scotty, what is the difference between asphalt and ashphalt??
That was a very good video!!! Hey Scotty, have you ever seen that pic, where there is a comparison between a garbage canister in India in 1990's, to one of those
new Tesla Cyber Trucks?? Let me know if you need more info.
You didn’t talk about the reliability of the Highlander
2015 Highlander 175,000 miles. Valve train is noisy but I guarantee it’ll outlive my 07 ranger with 100,000 miles.
Audi. Subaru.
The Honda Ridgeline AWD does the same thing; Honda calls it I-VTM4. Awesome system.
If I had a turbocharged vehicle I'd be changing my oil every 3-4K miles. No exceptions.
Idle car too a few mins before shutting off.
Would you consider the 2015 Toyota Venza a cross over or a suv ?
Venza is a crossover
Still great though. More carlike than highlander tbh.
I have a 2009 Toyota highlander hybrid with 290,000 miles I’m hoping i can make it to 400k or more only time will tell.
U left Toyota's used best biy🤔😁
Get a used oldsmobile country squire station wagon.
Country Squire was a Ford station wagon.
The early 70s Chevy Vega had the worst engine that had a teflon lining that leaked horribly after a few months
American OEMs have never (imo) produced an exceptional 4-cylinder. Perhaps I'm wrong - someone correct me. I thought the Chevy Vega GT was a nice effort, but could be no better than the powertrain.
I heard about the best and worst years for Ford but not for Toyota. Did I miss something?
Great video. Marketing is everything, duping people to overpay for things they don't need and aren't dependable. Car or Truck is what I've owned. MPG around town, a 6.5' bed and 4x4 for adventure, vacation, hunting, and hauling a trailer.
I absolutely love your videos and how informative you are
2010 Honda Accord Manual 4cyl....412,000 kms...still running strong.
The Bronco II had an amazing turning radius
That Gen Ford Ranger was pretty capable. 2.9L Cologne V6 4WD with the 5-speed Mazda transmission.
We get snow maybe one day out of the year. I don't need AWD. We just stay home until it melts.
Goodness, what did we doin snow before AWD? LOL
Crossover anything Crossover sounds like what 'some people' nowadays 'think' they are doing.
This is a lot of good info . 400 hp.Thank you again, Scotty! Need high clearance to get to my home.
Get a Subaru Crosstrek and put $10k+ back into your purse.
I drive a 06 Avalon 309,000 3.5 V6 litter Still will put u in da bac seat frfr (PULLING)
Hello Scotty from Mooresville North Carolina USA 🇺🇸
The Highlander, or Lexus counterpart . The Honda Pilot would also be a good choice.
Avoid all Toyota vehicles, the quality has declined significantly.
I've really enjoyed these types of videos. Very informative. I'm a Toyota Camry fan
Saturday night Scotty University!
Highlander 1st gen awd is my pick for my area and need.
The Highlander is not a $40k vehicle.
Just but a Subaru
FORD SIGMA (Duratec 1.6/2.0+) My 2017 Fiesta is a 1.6, nat! She goes, and goes, and goes, and goes.....And quick for her capacity! Thanks mostly to YAMAHA. 😁 ......AND sounds 100X more beautiful than a direct.
I have AWD on my 2020 Ford Transit van but it’s not AWD until you actually put it on. It’s just two wheel drive.
Has scotty ever covered the 2025 crown signia?
Hi Scotty
Evening!
Ford Exploder
Thanks Scotty
The Toyota Highlander from the later years, but I love both before 2011
I prefer 4wd ,not AWD
I have a 2016 mitsubishi islander sport. With 4 wheel drive, always front wheel drive. Unless I switch it to automatic or locked ninety five thousand miles on it and have had no issues, ten thousand of those are mine
I love my Toyota 1ME-MZ engine.
I remember being i control of what I drove.
I get it. A bunch of us still are.
what do you think about the 2019 kia sportage please let me know by a message. tk u

I thought the Mazda Navajo was discontinued and became the ford explorer.?
Actually the Navajo was a rebadged Explorer.
Just bought a toyota. Not wanting to watch this right now lol

Get to the point Scott, your well infomed. 20 minutes please.
Vicious coupling
Hey
Hey Scotty, I have a question. I have a 2013 Hyundai Aerza that needs new rear struts. What’s a good brand of struts for me to purchase?
All vehicles are garbage now.
