I used to have Seiko Kinetic, it survived a lot of damage and elements, but lasted only 8 years , Capacitor (battery) wore out and could not push rotors inside the mechanism, still I want this one again
Very cool to see someone reviewing a kinetic. Still have one from a long time ago. I was surprised to see a watch Aliexpress came with one. I didn't think Seiko was were making them to sell to other brands.
Thanks...it was a movement I'd heard about but was on the wayyy back burner until this watch. Didn't know AE had any kinetic. As usual after doing one of these reviews...I'm on the prowl because of the movement being phased out. Hope all is well with you in TX. Jack Mason now has my attention, no thanks to your videos feeding that interest. Take care and thanks for watching.
Got mine from Jomashop about a year ago. I wear it more than any other watch in my collection for two reasons. 1) because I need to keep it charged and 2) because it is an amazing watch. I’m not saying I like it better than my Speedmaster, but I like it at least as much. Truly a beautiful and unique watch. It gets noticed more than any other watch in my collection.
Think solar kinda killed the kinetic movements. My brother, who is NOT an addict like me, wore Seiko kinetics for years. He beat the crap out of them and only replaced them when they become too beaten/scratched to wear for work. Great video!
Very attractive piece indeed! The kinetic movement is unique and rare. My first “real adults” watch was a Seiko Arctura kinetic perpetual (2006). Got it from my late father when my first daughter was born. Coincidentally, I checked it a couple of days ago- gave it a 90 seconds continuous shake- runs beautifully. The calibre 7D46👌🏻
Many thanks for this review. It made me aware that there was still an affordable Kinetic model available and a handsome one at that! I immediately found one at Jomashop and ordered it. I know I'm going to enjoy it. Cheers.
I recently acquired the same one....and yes it is beautiful and keeps perfect time and is just fun to wear. I have about 5 nato style straps of various stripes and colors that match it perfectly - it can be a different watch every day depending on my mood!!
I'm more familiar with the 5M85 movement, which is the GMT version of the 5M82. I have a soft spot for kinetics, as my first ever serious watch is the Sportura Kinetic GMT given to me as a present from my elder brother. The capacitor of that model just turned a bit faulty recently, so it might need some service at the Seiko service center afterwards I guess. On the other hand, I ended up picking up a Kinetic Tuna (SUN21P1) and a Kinetic Perpetual watch (SNP129J1) myself just because how carzy accurate to the seconds these watches are. I think the concept itself is good, but the capacitor/battery technology still can't keep up with the concept. Batteries just dies when the time comes and there's nothing you can really do about it as that's how batteries are. Even Solars will eventually run into the same problem as it's just the charging method is different and you still need something to store the energy for the quartz movement. It's not like Seiko is interested in throwing everything with a spring drive and make the Grand Seiko line worthless. Even if they do so, nothing can beat a good old quartz movement, which still needs it's batteries. I guess if you look in the other way and view kinetics as a "movement that does not require a lot of battery replacement", it'll make more sense and have a better reputation.
I do like the engineering of the kinetic movement. Capturing energy through movement is a great technology. It has its shortcomings but for me, it’s a conversation piece and the watch I have with the movement looks stunning.
Always a good day when you can learn something new. I did not even know about Seiko’s Kinetic Movements. Thanks for showing it to us. And is it me or is the second hand hitting all the markers? Wow…Thanks again!
Why yes, the second hand is hitting all the marks. I had heard of kinetic movements but didn't realize there was one out there at this price point. have a great week.
Beautiful watch. Something the keep in mind. I’m still on my honeymoon with my Heimdallr Captain Willard homage and Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster BN0150-28E Diver. LOVE these watches.
I don't want to get between you and your watch bride...s...Not sure how this works. The Cpt Willard is a staple of Seiko and legendary comfort. I'm on the prowl for an Eco-Drive...somthing a little off the beaten path. Have a great week!
@@Realidealgear Lol. Well, the Heimdallr does a great homage (although it might have a feature or two that might irk you). The Citizen is awesome. ISO certified so it can take a beating. I bought mine on eBay. Good luck and have a great week!
So this video is 5 months old now. Did the capacitor live up to the 6 months? I have a kinetic which has quickly become my favourite watch. And is has nothing to do with the movement. Crystal, dial, case, hands, bracelet and a sweeping day. It all comes together beautifully. So now your Seiko has got my attention! I already have a Citizen 'Seaplane' which is superior with it's solar movement but it's an olive green sunburst. There's much to not like but it fits well on my wrist so it's a love hate relationship. Anyway, think I'll move on my casio Oceanus (too small imo for a 7.25 wrist), get this Seiko and then decide between that and the citizen.
I was searching for this watch just today and found it in Amazon but in the specs / description it says the country of origin is China.. should I be worried or does Seiko make produce this model in Chinese factories? Thank you in advance!
Great question. Made in China doesn’t affect my decision making any more unless you’re looking for a Made in Japan stamp on the watch. The same issue would be true then for Casios not made in Japan and made in Taiwan.
I have a soft spot for Seiko's Kinetic line. My dad bought me one when I was sixteen and I enjoyed that watch for many years. I love the green dial and that step down at the edge. Paired with that leather strap it looks really good! Interesting... I have not seen a display window of a kinetic movement before! I am not too familiar with Petrified Fish's models but that looks like the Rogue to me. If so that's an awesome knife. Friend of mine has the Bunta and that is just fantastic as far as EDC's go! I think this is a great watch! 9.9 indeed! Hope you have a great week Tim! Take care and God bless Brother! 💪💪
I’ve had a hard time not wearing this watch because it’s grab and go, beautiful dial, lower cost…sort of, and 100m WR. Your dad has great taste in watches. The petrified fish is a fun button lock. I’ve never kept track of the model…hence I just refer to it as the ‘petrified fish.’ Have a great week my friend.
@@Realidealgear Thank you my friend. He sure did! I wonder how these hold up long term having both a capacitor and a mechanical component. Yeah they are really nice for the price! I like their design and the fit and finish is pretty good on the blades too! Much appreciated Bro!

Sorry guys. Seiko Kinetic is a no-go unless you only have one watch and walks it every day. My kinetic has been returned to Seiko in Munich for replacement of the capacitor. I have more watches and only wear it occasionally. That means it goes all dead. It takes several days to get it running properly again and you are not able to rewind it unless you shake it for several hours. I have given up on it though it is a beautiful GMT diver. Cannot recommend Kinetic. I think every one will regret unless you only have 1 watch and wear it all time
I own one of these Seiko Kinetic movement watches that I bought in late 90s. I an unhappy as I thought that this so called capacitor/battery really sucks. It simply does not last. Maybe it does a little bit more than a battery does and I do not think it is worth the extra money that they want for it. I do like the concept that the capacitor is charged with movement though. Replacing that capacitor becomes extremely more expensive than just replacing a battery. Again just not worth the pain in the butt. I will take a mechanical automatic movement any day over it. I would just bypass it as a great idea that was not fully thought through.
I just ordered 1 cant wait!
Enjoy!
Great review, I just picked one up.
