Very informative! I really appreciate the effort; immediately apparent in the quality. Kinetics are great unless you're a watch collector. Too many watches in the rotation to dedicate the wrist time it deserves. I had a Seiko SUN065 and it was fantastic. Super fun, even more so by the feeling of the weighted rotor. I could directly feel my movements charging my watch.
You sir deserve 1000x more subscribers, your videos are extremely well made, and appeal not only to watch enthusiasts but also to geeks. Thanks a lot for sharing this
That’s very kind of you to say! I just enjoy making them and learning new things. Just finishing up a new one on Lip watches which I think a is particularly good story.
I remember seeing a Seiko Kinetic for the first time and I always wanted one. Years later I finally found a used one I could afford. I still have it and love it. I replaced the capacitor a couple of years ago and it is still going strong. I don't wear it as often anymore but I still love it.
Very informative as I have a 1989 Seiko 7M12-7A20 auto quartz and wondered if it was one of the first early kinetic watches. It is a beautiful Gold colour and in almost mint condition. I don't ware it that often and it takes a bit of light shaking to get it going otherwise it just sits in a glass case along with my other Seiko's because I'm scared to knock or scratch it. Cheers for the video very well put together.
Ha ha yeh they clearly got my dad to buy in as he changed over from his captain Williard to one of these!! The titanium seems to have been a selling point
Thank you for presenting this. I recently saw Seiko's Spring Drive and I was wondering what came before it and now, here I am watching a piece of technological advancement history.
I have watched this video 3 times, and enjoy it every time. I have just purchased a SLQ007, and am aware that they are famous for capacitor failure. I understand only way to repair is to send to Seiko and will cost around USD750 to replace capacitor (and service). Strangely its the unreliability and quirkiness that is part of the mystic and appeal of these watches. Fantastic video and production, a great history - thanks for your efforts.
Absolute buzz, got my stored new parts out to refurbish my yr97 green kinetic, for my sons wedding. Whole watch shows brand new, only the interior was original. Gorgeous!
That was an excellent and thorough review, I just bought one on an impulse off eBay and couldn't find anything out about it, you have sort of narrowed it down, it's new in box old stock, the seller didn't list the specific model number and the dial doesn't display much info, it only says Laurel and Seiko at the twelve o'clock and fine ceramic at the 6 o'clock, it's two tone looking like titanium and gold, but it looks of way higher quality than the two tones I've seen out there, it has diamonds on the bezel at 3,6,9. Finally the seller also took a picture of the book cover that comes with it, but even that only says Laurel Seiko 4m21, the box looks very high end leather and it comes on a huge embossed cushion. I won't know anymore facts until it arrives like an actual model number, but the pictures are stunning, I think this was a very special high end model starting the two tone titanium era of the early 90s but I guess we need to wait and see 😂 anyways your video was so thorough and well put together i have subscribed to you channel for future quality content!
You made a great job by collecting all this historical Data. My compliment and my highest appreciation. The youtube algorithm selected your video, on my research results, as I was looking informative videos related to the Le Phare Jean D’Eve Samara, which claimed to be the 1st Automatic Energy Generating quartz movement lunched on 1988 at 100 years company celebration, so before Seiko...
Excellent news! This video has been a slow burner , but the kinetic fans eventually find it. The Jean D’eve is indeed very cool - with the design element also being very nice for that watch.
You didn't mention the Bulova Accutron II Spaceview 21 and I don't blame you. I can't find anything about it other than that's it's a limited edition of 1000 circa 2010. I just got my unworn Seiko "Jay Leno" SLQ007 back from Japan. It needed a new capacitor. I am still waiting to get the Bulova back for the same reason.
Still have my Swatch Oscillatron with AutoQuarz movement from the end of the 90s, but weak acrylic body that broke quickly at the lugs plus capacitor weakness made that beautiful and fascinating watch a drawer piece. So frustrating…
Most of today's watches and activity watches would not exist without microelectronics and quantum mechanics. Thank you for your watch history presentations. :)
Thankyou! I’m learning loads about things I should already know about. As I’m sure you can tell, I’m no engineer or scientist , but it’s been fun engaging with these scary topics and trying to simplify!

Great video! I own a sun045 50 years anniversary kinetic gmt diver since 2016 never had any issue with it . It tics like a clock as we say in Dutch. Btw, i don't get the issue everyone is talking about.Namely the winding problem. I wear it one's every two months for a few days and it keeps on running. Much better than an automatic with a limited power reserve or a springdrive...
I have two Seiko Kinetics, one from 1996 (just had the capacitor replaced), the other from 2013. I wear them, alternately, every day and they serve me very well. I think they're great value for money. What I find bizarre is the staggeringly high prices for the Grand Seiko watches.
Excellent video! I love your enthusiasm, it's very contagious. Not enough to actually change my mind about Seiko Kinetics, but I did like the video and subscribe to your channel. It was great to learn more about automatic quartz watches through your video. It was a great surprise to me to learn that Frank Muller has made one. But to me, they still seem to combine the worst points of automatic with the worst points of electric. Maybe I'll feel differently if I experience one which had a power reserve indicator and hand wind option. Or maybe what really turned me off was just that that particular Seiko Kinetic had such a terrible bracelet. Maybe a nice strap would bring me around. Okay, maybe you did change my mind.
I’ve had a Jorg Hysek Kinetic since new for over 20 years. Hard to overstate how cool it was at the time. It hasn’t aged well though IMO, maybe it will be cool again one day. A shame about the capacitor, I’ve been though a few and it doesn’t run at the moment. I guess at least there is no risk of battery leak.
I just got a Seiko Arctura Kinetic Chronograph it need repairs i just purchased it for under 90 dollars i always been a seiko kinetic fan very innovative watch
I had the 1st-gen kinetic watch which Seiko called AGS. You really had to shake the watch a long long time before it held reasonable charge and start running.
It's crazy how interesting some of those kinetic watches can be! Do you still have yours; I remember a STOC video where you effectively offer it up for sale - just sheer curiosity because you didn't seem overly impressed with it, I'm not exactly looking to buy)
Ha ha well that was actually why I did the kinetic episode in the first place - as a way of getting me more excited about my own. Now I’ve done the episode - I love my kinetic. How my bizarre brain works!
Great video, again lots of info very well presented. I didn't know anything about this idea. I do remember the clockwork radio at the time it came out. I've got a clockwork torch that I use regularly (it sounds like a jet engine starting up when you wind up the crank). It doesn't hold the electric power for very long now as it's 20ish years old. I'm quite surprised it was developed for use in watches as, don't mechanical automatic watches already perform the same function. What's the advantage?🤔🙂
It’s the same value proposition as a citizen eco-drive but it’s “internal generation” rather then “external generation”. You’re right though on the automatic side the power reserves have got much longer , and in the Quartz side the battery life has got extended, that it leaves minimal real value. I guess that’s why it’s not been the huge hit Seiko hoped! Still cool tech though!
Compared to mechanical automatics, if and when it works well (not taking wear and tear into account), it can 1. hold its charge for months instead of hours and 2. it has quartz accuracy, so about a few seconds deviation per month only.
Great video. I have a kinetic, the sun031p1 with the 5m85. A cool watch. It sits within a collection and I find that as the kinetic system has a slow charge rate then without wearing it a lot of the time I never get to full power and because I wear so many other watches the kinetic often is double ticking and demands wear time. It's GMT with date and just don't want to have set all that every time I pick it up. I tried a watch winder but with no success, I guess the input movement is specific, do you know of a watch winder that will work with kinetic?
A perennial problem with the kinetics. Places do sell watchwinders for these - there is a place in uk that repairs kinetics that sells them - but by havent tried them
Braun Oral-B electric tooth brush charger can do the inductive charging to your Kinetic watch battery. It's on Amazon for 10 bucks, but it is 110V. You could try other Electric tooth brush charger if you have one around the house.

"How did we fit it all in? We took out the battery" No they didn't Kinetics still have a rechargeable battery. The level of dishonesty in Seikos advertising is breathtaking
Absolutely the worst least collectible line of watches (Kinetic) - this is an abomination for any collector unless you wear them daily. Once the battery(capacitor) is exhausted there is virtually no way to revive it outside of hacks that work some of the time. Seiko actually had a charger they sold primarily in Japan and then discontinued because of price point and lack of interest - sell them or store them and forget them as quickly as reasonably possible. They are not collectible and no sane watch collector would pay $1 USD for any.
Yes indeed , this has been the curse of the kinetic range and why the tech is largely redundant. My own was inherited and I got a new capacitor fitted to bring it back to life for a while, but that would make no sense if it didn’t have the family connection. The history of the technology and seiko going in so hard on it I still find very interesting , as well as curiosities like the chronograph and master range. Glorious failures are part of watch history and I think collectors would be more driven by this rather than its genuine utility. The more recent models have a crown where you can top up the energy which overcomes some of this stuff, but I totally get your perspective (likely the more sane one as my collection interests are from from sensible)
The kinetic watches are often so special in there appearance that I could not resist collecting them. They are for sale, but most of them will be in drawers. What a shame.
