    The older I get the less time and patience I have for these people.
    When you work 40 hours a week, cook all your meals, drive around including a 25 minute commute to work each day, have a house a mortgage a husband, a dog and a million other moving parts and cogs that fit together to make your everyday existence then when you're indulging in your free-time-interests then trust me when I say you really are not in the mood to see any of this bullshit.

    Just a short anekdote from my local gaming club: We were doing a small 1000p Age of Fantasy tournament, 4 rounds in one day. There were a lot of cool games, nothing really salty, but the most bro thing was at the "award ceremony": Since a member of the club won the tournament, the price (a collection of basing materials and tools) went to the last place, giving him a small win after a long day. Good times.

      Back when I was a teenager and we used to do YuGiOh local tournaments our "wooden spoon" prize was a booster pack of the guy who placed bottom's choice.
      Kid once pulled a £50 card out of it and fell to his knees in celebration with his hands above his head like he'd just scored the goal that won the FA cup. Was wholesome as hell.

    My friend joined one of these teams.
    I can understand people doing it, it gives a sense of belonging, being part of a "dojo".
    However, he quited after some time and told me, the coaching often had part where they explained how to skirt around rules.
    Certain tactics, which are technically just not cheating yet.

      That's very sad, but I can't say it's surprising. I think this is very common in any physical sport as well, how to 'foul' a player without getting penalized for it, how to get away with a nasty slide tackle or an off-sides, etc. Takes away from the spirit of the game.

    I don't play 40K but attending many Adepticons and watching the 40K players, specifically in the 4-Man Event, I think the jerseys, team t-shirts, or costumes for some really (at least outwardly) make for a fun event. Maybe it is just the outside view combined with the 4-Man Team tournament format that encourages the team t-shirts. I think the problem that this nightmare calls out is he was playing against an arrogant jerk and the team and shirt just magnified things and gave him a tribe to encourage him. I don't think the team shirts are bad, especially at larger tournaments or cons where your shirts may help you spot your friends easier.

    I'm a new player who was introduced to the game by someone in one of those shirts, on one of those teams, and I haven't had any issues what-so-ever. They've all been welcoming, helpful, and incredibly patient with how slow I am as I get used to the rules. They actually organize events, they have pre-game beers with everyone, and they're overall lovely people. I have no doubt that the person in this story is telling the truth but I wanted to add something positive.

      Northern also consistently tells people to leave games when people behave that way, and says himself he would leave a game over something as benign as someone asking for his rules more than twice
      lol.

      I went back and listened to the episode that was in and have a bit of an update on it. With the way 9th was going attendance went down until it was pretty much just the team playing each other. Then when 10th hit people came back to try out the game again and see what changed. The first event they held for 10th I was told had 12 players from that team that showed up with eldar armies and smashed everyone off the tables. Now for this month they are again down to just playing themselves as they have run everyone else off.

    I can't honestly imagine taking yourself so seriously as to believe you're a big shot in a niche competitive scene that even the player base barely cares about that much, that's where it gets truly cringe - wearing team shirts if you're just having a laugh and not taking it that seriously just sounds like a bunch of lads enjoying themselves, nothing like the kinds of "professional Warhammer players" out there.
    The fact that this guy not only thought himself a big shot, but also *_felt the need to cheat with his pre-nerfed overpowered army_* and then slow-play in order to prevent OP from getting a turn in the final minutes is just slimy - gamesmanship thrives where sportsmanship means nothing to people, folks will bend and break all the rules they can so long as they can get away with it and earn wins, and there's barely anything you can do to prevent it but just refuse to play with that person again until they play fair and respectfully.

    I don't play 40 but I am interested in learning about it, as I have been into wargaming for many years. I looked at course about learning the rules offered by the company you mentioned several times. While I am sure they improve a player's performance on the table, I could see gamesmanship being promoted; "the art or practice of winning games by questionable expedients without actually violating the rules." Which is what this story was all about.
    If that is what some people want to pay their money for, then that is up to them, but it is not for me. Team t-shirts and gamesmanship are bad news for everyone.
    Keep up the good work and jeep promoting the better aspects of the hobby.

I've had horrible games against people without uniforms or teams and great games against people with. The shirt doesn't change the person

  • @thephilguy1
    @thephilguy1 Год назад

    Team T-shirts only make sense in a team tournament context when everyone in your group is playing toward a shared goal, and individual members are willing to sacrifice their own performance, draw a bad matchup, or otherwise "take one for the team". Team members are supposed to represent their team in the best way possible so as to make sure everyone at the event remembers their team is a good sport and a group you want to play with again. Otherwise, yeah, wearing a jersey comes off as taking the game way too seriously. As much as GW tries, competitive 40K is not an e-sport, nor is it high stakes poker. You can be try your best to win but still a good sport, and try to make sure your opponent has fun and can actually play the game.

    I wear my state rep team shirt to events, I don't know if its different here in Australia, but my experiences have been the opposite.
    Normally games against other "known players" have been very pleasant, very little rules disputes, playing on a clock so there's no feels bad moments on time.
    I find my worst games are against "mid table bandits" regular 3-2 players who think they should be winning events.
    Of course this is objective, but honesty so are the nightmares.

    It has potential as an esport with quick games etc BUT these sorts of stories where your opponents are actively cheating or the bending rules because they can get away with it I'd want to have refs or table cams to pick this stuff up so you can call them out on it.
    It's the next stage up from the game we've all had when starting out against win at all cost players who want to punch down on newbies for an easy win. They've moved on to cheating to get their fix.
    Saying that I'd still happily go to a tournament with a local mob in club shirts or patches and have a laugh with like minded people over a few games and beers afterwards.

    I think there is a somewhat false dichotomy between competitive v. narrative players. And I also think it's perfectly natural for a maturing game system to have some growing pains as competitive play becomes more mainstream. Also shirts are fun. I've made them for things as silly as beer pong and softball so why not Warhammer? I'm sorry to hear stories about folks ruining them by associating a shirt with their bad behaviour.
    In short, I think a growing competitive scenes brings more good things than bad things. It forces GW to make the game more balanced which makes for more fun in constructing fluffy lists-- because let's face it--we'd all play good AND fun lists if we can do both at the same time (even if most of us don't aim for perfect optimization like a top tourney players). The biggest thing wargaming needs to do is build a culture of sportsmanship. This will just take time and good TOs to develop, but I think it will happen and will hopefully permeate to better norms in the casual community as well.
    North, I'd highly recommend checking out Rob the Honest Wargamer's vids about adding more narrative fun to tourney games and at least a part of his interview titled "5 New Friends: The Road of an LVO Age of Sigmar Champion" which talks a bit about developing a healthy competitive culture.

    if I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it was an American contribution to the hobby. Ofc we'll have them in the UK and EU now as well, but it does seem like the sort of thing that would have started in the States.
    TBH I find Tournaments to be very off putting. I almost went to local Blood Bowl Tournie once (the main one for my area in the National scene, so it's a big event. I won't say where, as don't want to call him out) but got serious anxiety about it, and never turned up. Thing is I had been talking to the organizer, and had been to his house for a game before. By not turning up a I ruined my friendship with him, and on the two times I tried to email him to tell him about what happened, he just totally gaslit me, which I found weird to be honest (he never denied knowing me, just as soon as I mentioned who I was and why I was contacting him, he just wouldn't speak about it. was very strange)
    Maybe I dodged a bullet, as I would never do that to someone.

      It's 100% an NA thing. The much lower density of 40k players meant there was a tradition of driving to a FLGS for games rather than playing with friends. Since you were playing strangers it naturally became competitive and more adult-oriented. All the major tournaments are in NA and always have been. As the major growth of new 40k players is in NA I wonder what the future holds.

    Hi North, not a "commenter", but sometimes I go down to write some. I'm a Fantasy "player" (=more painter) with the sqare bases in my heart, but even if you focus on 40K and collateral realities I can relate and really enjoy much of your content. As this issue of "Team shir(/t)ty players came up I already had a clear image in my mind, as such attitude is quite "human" in the worst of ways, talking of the bad ones. I was lucky enough never to be confronted by such, but I get the point. As you said You were going to do a focused video about the thing I thought I might unveil that image in my mind as it portraits it perfectly so to sat "in nerd lore", and I'm talking about the "Legacy Team" in the third movie of "Gamers: Hands of Fate", still here on RUclips, quite worth the watch, even as it deals with a fictive card game some D&D and conventions, the dynamic of such a team speaks books, and may be of further inspiration and maybe a suiting metaphor. I know you might not have the time but nonetheless it might still be an entertaining suggestion for when you have some. Hearing of you through the channel soon, be well, you and your relatives. Thank you.

      Except boxing and football are athletic sports that combine physical practise within a fixed set of rules not limited by anything other than your own ability. As opposed to 40k being a highly imbalanced game that changes every few months and can come down to a handful of dice rolls... nothing wrong with taking a game seriously but it can't ever be as competitive as an actual sport.

    • @ImperiumofRat
      @ImperiumofRat Год назад

      @Grintendo I don't belive random nature gives something less credibility as a "sport" ( I'm using that term not as a specifically physical based activity but as a general term) frankly being able to deal with rng is a strong skill factor in who wins matches, unchanging rules again is something that although taken to an extreme comparably when looking at something like football or boxing but rules change in either over time, just MUCH slower and finally there is a level of imbalance in sport 100% weight and gender categories are there to compensate for that, but even with those counted some people are born with natural advantages that although can't purely take them to the top levels do help in this aspect, do you think someone born 5ft4 and skinny can ever compete with top weightlifter, yeah, sure but not to the top level. Both have skill sets that are important but one isn't inherently less due to different parameters of judgement

    • @Grintendo
      @Grintendo Год назад

      @@ImperiumofRat in the case of the 5'4 lifter, they can absolutely compete at weightlifting. That's why it has weight categories which are effectively height categories. Name a top sport with any RNG? There is none. Not to mentioned like e sports it lacks the physical element of sport which makes it both impressive to watch and healthy to play. Maybe you are equally as impressed but do you think tennis would be watched as much if you had to roll a dice to see how many serves you got? I could go on but this is a RUclips comment :)

    • @ImperiumofRat
      @ImperiumofRat Год назад

      @Grintendo okay, tbf yeah, the height thing is a fair point, the healthy to play I feel is irrelevant to its legitimacy but its still a good trait to have, and impressive to watch is down to subjective opinion, the rng aspect is not true, it's just MUCH less important, how much rng means it is not valid? Only indoor sports to weather doesn't effect it? What is so great about esports and other similar systems is that everyone could do it, like chess (which has even less rng than most if not all sports).
      Finally not an argument but what's your opinion on sports like F1 and the like?

    Speaking of Vanguard Tactics, I think the positive image they've tried to cultivate is a steaming pile of BS. Stephen Box is a colossal douche IMO. When rules were rolling out a few weeks ago, he made some post on a Death Guard facebook group where he admitted he didn't actually PLAY Death Guard, but people were wrong to be so negative. He said if people "really loved" Death Guard, they'd look at the army "like a toolbox" and find ways to win. He bragged about having won with "underdog" armies in the past, but obviously stopped short of offering to prove us all wrong by playing the army in a competitive setting.
    Needless to say, we were all really appreciative of him telling us to just git gud, regardless of how bad our rules are. He didn't know why we were upset, but reminded us we shouldn't have been upset. I'm still waiting to see him put his money where his mouth is and take DG to tournaments to prove us all wrong. I imagine I'll be waiting right up until Death Guard get an OP release in a couple of years.

      @@Grintendo I can tell you as a DG player, the main complaint people are leveling at the rules are that they don’t FEEL like DG, are not fun, and finally are not competitive. His opening line is, “I’ll admit I don’t actively play Deathguard.” Then he says, “If you love Deathguard like [name] and [name] you will look at the book like a tool box. If you don’t love Deathguard then you’ll probably be looking at every other book and comparing.”
      The guy legit jumped into a group for an army he doesn’t play, bragged about how he “makes it [his] ambition to play non-meta armies,” and how he’s “proven fine and again it can be done,” and then straight gave us the “you’re not a real fan”lecture. You’ll notice he never gave an actual piece of constructive advice, he just chastised the community. If that’s not a douchebag move, I don’t know what is.

    Imo North youre just too sensitive, in a TOURNAMENT its pretty acceptable to be competitive, have teams, tactics, etc etc, you seem to really dislike competition and what comes with it, playing in a FLGS, or local GW or friends Basements be as fun and light hearted as you want, BUT in a TOURNAMENT where EVERY INCH is scrutinized and have refs and rules and is a COMPETITION then be as strategic, competitive, and cutthroat as you can.. in any other competitive sport its EXPECTED to act and think this way, be casual in a casual setting and nut the fuck up and be serious and competitive when youre playing in a competitive setting.. its not that hard, ive seen too many snowflakes giving wishy washy rules about "how competitive" ppl can be in a Bolt Action TOURNAMENT, and it just confuses ppl with half thinking they need to be serious and bring their A-Game, and the other half thinking theyll sing "Koombaya"..
