    Heavily peated Sherry bombs are definitely a joy to experience. My favorite homemade peated blend is Bunnahabian 12 60-70% & Ardbeg Uigeadail 30-40%. Put it in a sample bottle and let it sit at least two weeks to marry and enjoy. Even though it's mostly Bunna during the marrying time the Ardbeg takes charge and you get Ugi with the sherry kicked up a notch. A good thing to try in todays world with what we can get now. Cheers

    Hello,
    I had/have all of these Whiskys and i love(d) them all. But...
    Instead of the Laphroaig PX i prefer an IB Expression of it called Williamson (Which is technicaly a teaspooned Laphi) matured or at least finished in a Sherry Cask. Most Time its CS and NCF and NonColoured. Much more quality for same Money .
    Second Issue:
    Instead of Benromach Contrasts Peat Smoke i would choose there Cask Strength Version. Its matured in First Fill Sherry and has more Sherry Influence and Power.
    My Opinion. Thanks for your entertaining Video about these Bottles.

    I’ve had the first three of these with the oogy being my first experience of them. Recently tried Loch Gorm and i got the Laphroaig when travelling earlier this month at £75 for a litre, which I felt was very reasonable. I will have to see about grabbing the other two.

    Particularly if the Laphroaig is finished with PX sherry. That stuff is dark. Adding more color to an already dark natural finish and then bottling in near opaque bottles seems utterly pointless overkill. But then, I tend to view Laphroaig as 'overkill', but that's just the sherried whisky drinker in me...

    Should it be a red flag if a sherry matured whisky is still coloured, what does it say about the barrels? I know they are very expensive.

    • @MaltActivist
      @MaltActivist  Год назад +1

      I think those are good barrels. I don't expect a company like Laphroaig compromise in that department. I think these decisions come from top down and are implemented across the board. So whether you're Laphroaig or Bowmore or Hibiki you're gonna get colored. Sad fact of today's world.

    I'm a Highland Park Einar fan, but my dram is not available to me in the US. I'm looking for an alternative that gives me a "lightly peated" whisky, and, since I'm a hearty sherry cask fan, if that 'lightly peated' whisky were aged in sherry casks, I'd be happy. So, the low end Highland Park product available here don't deliver on what I'd found with the 'Einar'. I'm trying to obtain Benromach 10 or 15, hoping that one, or both, might deliver on the "lightly peated" flavor. I have Lagavulin 16 and Talisker Storm on hand and consider both "too much" for my tastes.

    Lovely list, really enjoy the ardbeg and Kilchoman as well! What are your thoughts on the Sanaig? I think it's a great bang for a buck.
    And (a bit off topic) do you know why lagavulin bottles their 16 yo and d.e. with 43% abv, is it because of the Asian market? I really like the 16 yo but I think this doesn't do it justice, I would much rather prefer 48% abv like the 8 yo has.

    • @MaltActivist
      @MaltActivist  Год назад +1

      Honestly I couldn't answer that even if I wanted to. All I can think of is that they want to a) cast a wide net + it's travel retail so it might be for that reason or b) they've just been doing it for so many years now they're afraid of changing it.
