    Okay, Geoff.... I did it. I put out a spread and offered up drams in celebration of my 70th circuit 'round the sun. I opened my liquor cabinet and laid on extra stock in preparation. I offered up access to 70 different single malts to my friends, family., neighbors, and colleagues who showed up. I offered up iced tea as an alternate. Most who attended did not partake at all of the spirits. They enjoyed the spread of Mediterranean foods and drank iced tea. I offered drams all round, and the usual response was to ask for whatever it was I was drinking. That was Benromach 15, or Glenmo Signet. I'd bought Deanston 18 (2 bottles!) and pointed out that it was my selection elder. It was a hit with several bibblers. One friend requested peated, and, after taunting him with Laphroaig 10SC, I poured him out a dram of Port Charlotte 10. He came back for another. One of my good buddies found the Longrow Peated and was very happy. So far as I could tell, there were no luxury snobs and the age statement folks were accepting of the 18 years. Such are my associates. More folks were impressed with the food offered up than the whiskies.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Год назад +2

      That's great! Glad to hear the whiskies went over well. Some definite crowd-pleasers in there, so I can't say I'm surprised. Always hard to gage what you're guests will or won't like, but with Benromach, PC10, Signet, Longrow, and Deanston 18 you seem to have had most of your bases covered. Sounds like you had a hell of a time, my friend. Cheers! 🥃

    PF= Ardbeg Corryvreckan
    SB= Aberlour Abunadh
    Pur= Dalwhinnie 15
    LL= Laphroaig Lore
    AS= I have lovely 15million year old H2O, non chill filtered, natural color but low abv. Best part, I have it on tap.

    Best bottle I've ever tried has been that Bowmore 21 Aston Martin. Crazy story, my friend's uncle has a huge Bowmore collection, and earlier this fall, we visited him, and he had the 21 Masters selection (Aston Martin) and the outrageously expensive and rare Black Bowmore 42 yr old at 40.5% abv. Both open! He gave me a 15 ml sample of each for $200 dollars total (which he claimed was a steal of a deal and after research, he wasn't kidding!). I let the black Bowmore open up for over half an hour, and took a sip. I almost (pardon the unintentional pun) "blacked" out, it was so amazing. Extremely fruity and oxidized. The best whisky I've ever had at that moment. I then had the idea to leave one tiny sip in the Glencairn, and in the other Glencairn, was the Bowmore 21 Aston Martin. So I asked for a 3rd Glencairn because I wanted to try an experiment. I took about 5 ml's of the Bowmore 21 from a tsp I asked for, and poured it in the 3rd glass, and added a few drops of water to get to approx. the same abv (40.5%) of the much beloved Black Bowmore, to try them at equal strength (if not equal years). I took a sip of the Bowmore 21 A.M, and it was mindblowingly BETTER than the black Bowmore at equal strength. A different animal! The 21 tasted older and richer! I then drank the rest of the bowmore 21 neat, and it was so thick and syrupy, it was the best whisky experience I've ever had. I made that $200 go a long way to get the most out of it! I wish I would have been earlier to the game, I would have stocked up on 2 cases on that Bowmore 21 masters selection. That bottle is very special with the way they made that whisky. Look into it! I wish you to one day be able to try it! Hope you don;t mind my essay! Slainte!

    The only other snob I would add is the whisky snob who buys whisky for the status, rather than the smell and taste. These are the snobs that think expensive rare Macallan is the pinnacle of scotch whisky and will pay $30k on a bottle to impress their rich friends.

    Geoff, what separates the Port Charlotte Heavily Peated 10 from the Port Charlotte OLC:01? Being that both bottles look virtually the same, only a slighter higher ABV on the OLC:01 and almost the same age statement...
    The difference in my market is $170 between the two and I'm struggling to pull the trigger one the OLC:01 because I know the PC10 is great and just can't imagine the OLC:01 being $170 'better' if that makes sense.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Год назад +1

      They do look similar on paper, but the depth, flavour, and complexity are two different worlds. I love the 10, but the OLC is a massive step up in almost every way imo. However, it's about $60 more expensive in my market, and even that's pushing it. If it's $170 more, I'd say give it a pass. It's amazing stuff, but that's just absurd. Australia is not a friendly market for whisky drinkers it seems...

    1. I was going to do Octomore but that seemed too obvious so I went with a Staoisha Bunnahabhain IB. Love the PC range though and completely agree with both your picks. Wish I could find the cask exploration more frequently
    2. Mac18 Sherry Oak. I know that’s boring but it’s really tasty and this isn’t my style so I don’t have a ton of options. Maybe a glendronach
    3. Honestly no idea. This is a style I’d like to experiment with so I’ll try and find your options! UPDATE: after reading other comments I’m seeing Springbank 12 and Local Barley mentioned? If those would count toward this category I’m totally in there. Love both of those and have a Campeltown representation on the list
    4. Also Hibiki 21. Also got it for way more reasonable than I could have imagined otherwise I wouldn’t have. Backup would be Not a Luxury Whisky from Compass Box that was extremely luxurious.
    5. Also Talisker but the 30. I got a couple before the price sky rocketed and am about to finish the first one. Going to be tough to crack the second knowing I’ll never see it again for a price I’m willing to pay. Backup probably an old grain whisky since it would have the age statement for a relatively reasonable price
    6. So many options here. I’m a big IB hound and loved the reveal of this being the mystery category. Probably a Signatory/G&M Caol Ila. Definitely mid teens age statement, cask strength, and maybe a finishing cask since I don’t think anything on the list has used one yet.

    My oldest, ergo max age statement, is Lagavulin 16. I'm Scots heritage. I can't bring myself to spend that much. I'm looking for a 'touch of peat' Scotch and I'd heard that peatiness is the first of the flavor notes to fade over time. I have a bottle of Laphroaig 10 in my cabinet, but it is at the back because I didn't like the upfront peat. When in the Orkneys, I ran into Highland Park's offerings and fell for their Einar because it has that soft, lingering 'touch of peat' in the finish. Of course, it couldn't be had in the US at all, as it is a 'retail travel offering' and only available through the Duty Free shops in UK airports. The HP products I could get here, and within my budget, didn't have what I sought. I knew that Ardbeg 10 and Port Charlotte 10 were too much peat for me, so I sprung for the Lagavulin 16, which sells for just a nickel shy of $100 here on the left coast. It is a distinct improvement over the Laphroaig 10, and, hey, Nick Offerman was pimping it, but it was still not what I sought. At least I'll consume it in this lifetime, which is more than I can say about the Laphroaig 10. Along the way, I tasted my way through a LOT of sherried whiskys and they came to represent the core of my 'go-to' whiskys....Arberlour 12, the Balvenie, Glenmorangie 10, 12, & 14, Glenfiddich 12, Auchentoshan Three Barrel, and Bunnahabhain 12. I just opened my first ever Campbeltown whisky with a bottle of Glen Scotia 15 (there is no Springbank whisky of any kind here). I suspect I will be taken with Aberlour A'Bunadh once I add it to the collection, but it will only be obtained when I'm feeling pretty flush, as it sells for $110 a bottle here. Right at the moment, I have a bottle of Benromach 10 on order....I'm hoping it fills the bill.
    And...Many of the names you listed are not available at all in my market. Neither the Blanoch, Glencadam, nor the Talisker 25 are available in this state. The Glenallachie here is an expensive whisky. The 10 year sells at just cents under $100 per bottle. There is Talisker 30 available (two bottles in the entire state), but it sells for $999.95 a bottle. Tamdhu was already on my list of 'to try' so it's nice to see that you think it can be foisted on snobs and still has good taste. The Tamdhu 12 sells for less than $80 a bottle....much less painful. But successive age statements I consider 'beyond my means'.
    So, at my place, peat snobs get Laphroaig 10 or Lagavulin 16 and I heartily recommend the latter. Sherry bombers have more of a choice, as I stock Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, Auchentoshan Three Barrel, and Bunnahabhain 12. I'll definitely lean into your Tamdhu 12 suggestion when I'm next purchasing. I think that the closest I have to what a 'purist' might be interested in is the Glenfiddich 12, but it is such a pedestrian and slightly sherried Speyside. I'll look around for other light, clean, malty but unsherried bourbon casked products. I've also a Clynelish 14 which is okay, but won't make the repurchase list. Age statement folks will be stuck with the Lagavulin 16 or the Glen Scotia 15, as that's as high as mine go. To the best of my knowledge, I've never tasted a whisky of 18 years or older. Ever.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Год назад

      Sounds like you're quite peat averse. HP is a great gentle peat alternative. Benromach is another good one to fit the bill. How do you feel about Talisker?

    • @kellywellington7122
      @kellywellington7122 Год назад

      @@Gwhisky Well, HP is where I started with the Quest for 'a touch of peat', but everything I've tried with their label since I returned from the UK just doesn't match the Einar flavor profile. I've a bottle of cask strength and it doesn't get much activity; it's rough going and I don't taste any peat at all. I have a bottle of Talisker Storm, which is fine, but it, too, will last some time. The Lagavulin 16 goes down better than the Storm. I've a Benromach 10 on special order and I'm looking forward to it. I'm wondering about the BenRiach line...they have peated 10 and 12, and their regular 10 and 12. I have not tasted. Does their regular line have any peatiness, or are they sherried? How peaty are their 'peated' lines?
      I may just have to be satisfied with Johnny Walker Black. It has that light peaty finish that I like. And the blend is no slough, either.

    Is Bunna 12 really that sherry forward?
    I was a little surprised you didn't stick with Bruichladdich for the purist. I've got a few independent 2nd fill bourbon but when I want barley forward, the Islay Barley shines.
    The budget friendly 21 year old Glen Moray I would suggest for both luxury and age. Not a 95+ whisky but it does deliver for both categories. If you're looking for the friendliest dram.

    Nice video. As usual. For me one type missing. Combination od first two. Budget friendly peated sherry bomber;-) What would you reccomend to Loch Gorm lover but half cheaper? ;-)

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Год назад +1

      That's a tall order. The Sanaig is good, but it can't match the richness of the Loch Gorm. At half the price there really isn't much. It's a different profile, but the Ledaig Sinclair Rioja is a great combination of peat and fruity flavours.

    Surprised the Glenfarclas 25 wasn't the "obvious choice". That's about as reasonably priced as it gets for anything over 18 years. Though for the money, people gravitate to the 21 year, or so I hear, which I also have.
    PeF: Port Charlotte 10 or Ledaig 10 - though if if you ask me the balance of Benromach or Oban 14 is the way to go.
    ShL: "Old Malt Cask" Aultmore 11yr 1st Fill - I'm cheating with an I.B. but at 64.7%, it'll ask the question, "Is there such a thing as too much sherry?"
    Pur: Craigellachie 13, Classic Laddie, Bladnoch 10 - no matter the choice, purists will either hate me or love me.
    Lux: Compass Box Flaming Heart 6th Ltd. - that luxury bastard better have some decent experience under their belt, or I'm not popping the cork on this one.
    Age: Dewar's Double Double 32yr old - I'll pop this only if age bastard: has decent experience under their belt, AND abstains from any alcohol for 3 weeks minimum. Only a refreshed palette will experience the full force. Otherwise it'll be pearls before swine.

    Interesting choices for your 5 types of whisky drinker.
    Agree with approx 50% of your selection...which is fair enough.
    However, can you please refrain from swearing. It does not become you, it lowers the tone and is totally unnecessary.
    Thanks.
