    Next level. I said "Oh FUCK" when you put ice in the Springbank, then almost threw my phone across the room when you poured the Coke. And the sleeveless black tee was the icing on the poop cake. Great list Geoff! I DEFINITELY experience most of what you listed. Sadly, I have been hurt (I won’t say “butt hurt” because that’s vulgar) when I have poured a favorite to a friend only to have them say “eh, that was ok”. Conversely, I have tasted some highly aged stuff that really wasn’t special at all (IMO). In those cases I just say thank you and keep my opinion to myself. Snobs rarely know they are snobs. While having scotch discussions (yes, that’s a thing), I have had a friend say “that’s a one string guitar” regarding a lack of complexity in a scotch. I DO NOT CARE!!!! I LOVE that “one string” and don’t give a crap if it isn’t a freaking London Philharmonic Orchestra of complexity. Lastly, it’s ok to buy a budget, low ABV scotch. I enjoy those as an “easy dram” just as much as I do a high ABV, high aged stated, expensive dram. Anyway, my rant is over. I feel better now.

    Blends. There is a certain segment of the whisky community who consider all blends to not only be inferior to every single malt but so bad that they should never be poured. That's okay since it means more Compass Box for me. These are the same people who will go on and on about some no name independent bottler's rendition of a whisky from a distillery who sends 99% of their product to be blended but they wouldn't ever try that blend.

    • @HenrikLassu-igenyteremtes
      @HenrikLassu-igenyteremtes Год назад +3

      To be fair on that point, im one of the people that will probably never buy blends (or at least in the next good couple of years).
      Its not that they are inferior, its just that i want the purer experience. If i wanna taste Caol Ila, i’ll buy it.
      Makes the tasting easier + i find that great whiskies have so much complexity, i’d feel lost in a blend with great whiskies.
      Well that, and most blends are not exactly aimed at the enthusiasts:)

      Are you talking about blended malts or blended scotch? Because even single malts are blends from a single distillery. It's not like blending malts from different distilleries makes for a different kind of distillate as when you're blending grain whisky with a modicum of malt. Blended malts are as good as single malts

    • @germantarapow9112
      @germantarapow9112 3 месяца назад

      @@riccardo5281man is very clear what he means. And blended malts are better than blended whisky but the single malt allows you to taste the malt character isolated. I love Monkey Shoulder and also think JW Green Label is one of the greatest whiskies but in my opinion the fact that making a whisky with no needing of blending it to balance their profile makes them more valuable. But it just my opinion. Just keep enjoying whatever you want.

    How or what others drink/pronounce their whisky I couldnt give a crap about...to each their own! "5 things that whisky drinkers hate" should be;
    1) More tariffs/taxes by governments/countries
    2) Distillers raising prices just because a bottle has become popular
    3) Idiots buying mass quantities of limited or allocated whisky bottles to sell it at ridiculous amounts of profit
    4) Regionalization or limited exportation of better bottles and allocated bottles to some countries
    5) Limiting production when distillers have the production capacity to make more, when they have products that sell out quickly.

    I am a snob, but I am a constructive one. If I find out that one likes a bottle which I have on my shelf while I don't like that whisky so much anymore, I always consider to give that bottle away. In general, it is a win win transaction as I do not like to have too many bottles I do not really like. So, I consider - for example - to give away my Aberlour 12 to a colleague. It is a perfectly good whisky, but I prefer other drams. I only drink whisky which I really enjoy as alcohol is, after all, a poison. Sometimes giving away a bottle which i dont like feels similar to buy a new one (it could btw well be the anticipation of buying a new bottle!)

    My "of the moment" pet peeve is when you send a decent bottle half way round the world and you find out they are drinking it at a ridiculous dilution (we are talking full highball glass -yes, they do have glencairns- from a single dram pour). I only found this out last week so still a very open wound - no more Tamdhu 15, or any Tamdhu, for you there's nothing I can do about the Ledaig 10 that is currently in the Christmas balikbayan box.

    Fun video, most surprising being to learn you're originally from Québec, étonnant, non ? ! I'll go French then...moi ce qui m'énerve ce sont ceux qui prononcent les noms de vins français n'importe comment, surtout ceux qui se prétendent experts en vins et whiskies et sont ultra-condescendants (...), mais il y a aussi je le suppose une partie des usages qui doit être locale et adaptative, par exemple dire "Cab Frank" (prononcer le "c") au lieu de Cabernet Franc, un usage américain apparemment courant et pas forcément dédaigneux, mais qui à nous français apparaît comme vulgaire...Autrement très amusante l'intro et l'exemple du croissant...Je suis sûr qu'il y a d'autres exemples que les 5 énoncés, mais là vite fait, je ne vois pas...Bien joué en tout cas, et moi aussi j'essaie de ne pas trop être rigide pour les usages question modes de consommation...j'ai choqué récemment quelqu'un en parlant de glace dans le whisky, tout en donnant un contexte (jamais dans mon Port Ellen !!! ). Salutations de France !

    Hey Geoff. I'm one of those people who've discussed Gaelic (pr. garlic 😉) pronunciation with you. I tried to do so in the form simply of showing how easy it is to find the correct pronunciations, e.g. a web search. I do understand that the whole of this vid. of yours is in jest. And mispronunciations do not make me angry or irate. But still I am going to suggest one thing to you: names matter.
    Just earlier tonight I watched the first of a two-part report on Al Jazeera for the programme 101 East. It was about deep-sea mining in the Pacific. The Australian journalist/reporter was quite respectful of all whom she interviewed, but it was still a little jarring that she pronounced the country of Nauru as "nah-roo", as opposed to "naa-*oo*-roo"--or "now-roo" is also possible if one "rolls" the "au" part. Sure, just a tiny thing, and I can make mis-pronunciations (& typos.) of all sorts of words just like anyone else. But it matters when such behaviours recur and become patterns, and it makes a big difference whether someone makes such a mistake seemingly wilfully as opposed to simple ignorance. We won't always get pronunciations correct, but again, it makes a big difference if we approach that task with care and respect, and show that we are *trying* to get the pronunciation right, as opposed to a) not caring to bother, or b) pretending to not care to bother simply for laughs. Because it's funny maybe once or twice, but not too many more times after that.
    OK, whisky names aren't necessarily people's or countries' names, but languages are important parts of peoples' cultures.
    I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm saying there are other perspectives/ways of looking at it that may also have some value/utility.

    I am admittedly very picky about how I consume whiskey, but I don't care how anyone else drinks it, so that's not a "snob" in my opinion.

    The opening was great. I can't imagine that Springbank would go well with Coke, but maybe I'm wrong. (I think it would taste good in a sour or a Manhattan.) I have a bottle of Springbank 15. Should I try it? I would have a hard time convincing myself to do so, but if I am ever in the presence of someone who would visibly blow a gasket at the sight, I might have to sacrifice a little Springbank 15. Traditional North American whisky (i.e. bourbon, rye, or blended Canadian) works better with Coke anyway. Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 goes just fine in Coke. I'm sure Pappy Van Winkle would too, but I don't have any of that.
    I don't see the big corporate 40%-43% ABV whiskies ever going away, though I suppose it is possible that they could become less popular. If this happens, hopefully better presented options will appear on the market at non-absurd prices. The heavily filtered 40%-43% whiskies have their place. I suspect that they were gateways to single malts for most of us. Back in the 1990s, they were all I could get, so they were the best choices, and the Macallan line was the best of the bunch. Macallan wasn't so horribly expensive back then - even the 18 was affordable. Many of them still taste good, but because I have since discovered better ones, I am aware of what they are missing, so there is always a little disappointment. The last time I had Macallan 12, this was how I reacted to it. The nose is wonderful, but it is thin on the palate. Imagine how good a non-chill filtered, higher strength version of Macallan 12 might be.
    Someone I know loves single malts, but he likes to drink them over crushed ice. Neat pours are too potent for his taste. I wouldn't drink a nice single malt this way, but we all have different preferences. I'm not going to get upset with someone for doing this, but when talking about whisky, I'll go over some of my history and how I got into drinking neat pours. That way, it comes across as a gentle suggestion rather than snobbery. Also, it can give people a path forward if they think they might want to work up to neat pours. The last time we met, we both had the standard version of Nikka Yoichi at a Japanese restaurant. It's moderately peated and flavorful enough to stand up to ice, so it turned out to be a good choice for my friend.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Год назад

      Yeah offering some gentle suggestions to someone who might learn to better appreciate a whisky without being pushy or snobby is probably the best way to do it. They don't need to listen to you, but they might benefit from that advice. Best we can hope for.
      I've heard from so many people how good Macallan used to be back in the day. Sadly most of us in the whisky scene today were too late for that party. Sounds like good times! 🥃

      There are people out there who think good single malts can only come from Scotland. I don't agree with them. About half of the single malts in my collection are not from Scotland. Many are quite different from the usual Scotch style, but some are quite close. Hopefully one of these days, I'll encounter the one that you mention. I'm in the United States. Unfortunately, most of what we get from Canada isn't all that great. Typically, all I see in the Canadian section of the liquor store are the usual lightweight blends. (Alberta Premium cask strength rye is very good, so at least we get something worthwhile.) Hopefully more of the good stuff will make it here eventually.
