I met a guy from the Aberfeldy distillery at a whisky fair and he ask me what can i offer you and i replied you have nothing i havent tried or want to try. He gave me a funny look and reached under the desk and pulled out a 40y from 1976 and gave me a dram for free and it is top 5 i ever tried but sure it is 2500euro😬

Good list Geoff. I do have a few of those, but generally steer clear of them also. I do have the Tamnavulin Sherry cask which is not bad, and stops me from drinking all of my much more expensive sherry bombs, or my Dalmore Cigar Malt, when I'm in the mood for something sweet as a break from my Islay obsession! New to the channel, but I already like the attitude and approach, and I really like when opinions differ - it's where we get new perceptions and broadens our horizons! It's a good list - for me I could add Jura and Fettercairn. It's a shame about Royal Lochnagar... I'll give you, that entry level 12 YO is not doing them any good reputationwise... But for IB's and special releases, the Royal Lochnagar is one of my absolute faves...! Keep up the good work!

  • @lesterlau

Hard to argue with your list - don't have a single one of these in my collection and not really compelled to get them either. I think I've tried Jura before and it was very average. The Aberfeldy 18 I had was actually alright, so maybe the revamp will put it over the edge for me. Fun list @Gwhisky - hope you're feeling better!

Best review yet, Geoff. I agree with your entire list - supermarket standbys, every one of them. I'll admit I have the Tullibardine 15 - I bought it because it's one of the range that has an age statement, and it's not bad. But all the others are just a "mug's eyeful" - designed to impress the unwary. If you're gonna buy decent whisky, go to a specialist. I also liked this review because, as usual, it takes some unexpected directions. Tripotassium phosphate DOES sound delicious, but doesn't get great reviews - but, like you, I'll choose honey nut corn flakes over oatmeal any day!

Geoff. I tend to ignore these in addition to your list!:- Ardmore Legacy, Glenkinchie, Cragganmore, Benriach, Tomintoul, Deveron, Knockando, Glen Moray.
Don’t know why, but there is usually something far more interesting and I’m not out to buy cheap and average alcohol but something which has the potential to justify the expenditure.

I resonate with you when you talk about Tullibardine distillery, but for the different reason. As the regulation of imported liquor of Taiwan has to reveal the original manufacturer, Tullibardine always appears on the back label of Costco's Kirkland whisky in Taiwan, "If I wanna taste some Tullibardine whisky, I'll just drink Costco's Kirkland whisky because this distillery is like Costco's OEM product." That's probably what Costco in Taiwan did to Tullibardine!

I actually really like Tullibardine. The 228 is quite solid, the sovereign is kind of like a very sharp and woody budget orchard house and I have a bottle of the 25 that some friends gave to me a couple of years ago that is quite delicious if a bit unchallenging.
To me Glenfiddich is a brand that I usually don't give much consideration to , though their experimental series does have some interesting expressions

Hi Geoff. With you on these brands, can also include , Dalmore, Auchentoschen, Bowmore, Glenlivet ( since the rebranding I’m finished with them) and Glenfiddich. Course we’re talking about OB’s right. Of course these brands are for the casual drinker but I’ve got a Tamnavulin ( was a gift) and in the garden or watching a film, over ice it’s fine, or at a party, and it won’t break the bank . Thanks Geoff for the review. Always helpful with your thoughts and opinions.
Some of mine MEH-whiskys so far are mostly low budget single malts and blends, but also some that gone up too much in price for what it is. There are many budget blends in this list, wich I won't mention. But here's some in no specific order.. Jura 12 is definitely one of those, even though the sherry cask version is better. Some others are The Sexton, Gold Bar, Glen Moray, Highland Park 12, Islay Mist original, even though Double Peated is better. Latitude 53 and 55, Tullamore Dew, Naked Malt, Monkey Shoulder, The Balvenie

tamnavulin, tullibardine and Royal lochnagar - can’t say I’ve ever heard of any of them (or, maybe more to the point, noticed them) and I’ve been in a lot of whiskey shops! aberfeldy - I’ve avoided it, not by design, just too many recommendations for other whiskeys out there. Jura, I keep hoping it’ll be good but hasn’t happened yet. Maybe an IB. Cardhu - I’ve only had the 12. Ho hum. Singleton - it’s not bad on the rocks, which generally is how I drink my cheap whiskey so the taste is calmed down lol There’s tons to add though, to each his own

I do agree with your list especially with the extremely bland Aberfeldy. Some permutation of your list is slightly better, eg. Jura 12 The Bay at 44% abv is a step up from the regular 12 and old bottling of Cardhu 12 at 43% abv. Pertaining to Singleton, the Glen Ord is the best among the three.

Aberfeldy is a brand I was not familiar with until I did the distillery tour. I find the 12 pleasant. Maybe good for beginners as the price is right. 16 is also priced well (Ontario Canada), 21 is well over priced.
Side note: On the tour I got a sample of straight from the barrel 21 year old (distilled 2002)... it was delicious. They should bump up the abv on the core range... but they won't.

@Gwhisky interestingly, I asked about it and the tour guide said no, Aberfeldy had no intention of releasing more niche offerings (peated, abv, etc...) outside of the samples for tours... he mentioned Craigellachie (also owned by Dewar's) as an alternative with more "interesting" bottlings for enthusiasts. He wasn't lying... I guess they maintain their lanes. #Business

Given that a brand I've been considering is on this list, I have something to ask. If it ain't too much trouble, I would like to know what you and other viewers would suggest I choose from the older whisk(e)y in my local area available to me that have my attention.
To help in giving a suggestion, so far, my favorite scotch bottles have been Bladnoch 11, Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2013 (not peated), and Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2014.
I haven't tried any older examples of whisky yet, and I've been looking for one to get to enjoy in my own home. I've recently been looking at an IB cask strength Tullibardine malt aged in a bourbon hogshead for 24 years. I was debating with myself between that and a cask strength IB North British 23 year malt aged in ex bourbon cask. At the price they are at, and overall stats, I feel they are a good value.
There's some other stuff under the price those bottles are at that I could get. Bottles such as Bruichladdich re/define 18, Bladnoch 19, and Compass Box Experimental Grain (insert honorable mention for Art & Decadence here. I'd include hedonsim, but I'm worried about that 43% abv). I have had a not so in depth tasting from a CB sample pack and while I haven't finished the 50ml bottles yet (trying to let them develop), the brand has left a pretty good impression on me (excluding the Spaniard).
What do you guys should I do?

I can't agree regarding Glen Moray. It's cheap and cheerful but an honest tasty malty single malt for casual drinking in the evening. I'd recommend you try out their Travel Retail Non-Chill Filtered high abv bottlings. They are nice. As regards Deveron, yes, I'm with you there. Similar to Dufftown, Aberfeldy and Cardhu. Bland Bland Bland. Deveron (made at MacDuff distillery) is another one of those bland over engineered single malts. I would definitely seek out some independent bottlings of MacDuff though. Good examples of the light lemon grass and custard style Speysiders. The current Scapa lineup is to be avoided. I am with you there as well. If you want to know what Scapa tastes like, seek out the 14 or 16 Year-Old bottlings in auctions. These long discontinued bottlings are still relatively easy to find. Recommended.

Never mind them, Glenfiddich's only peated malt, finished in Caribbean rum casks, and bottled as 'Fire & Cane' is a treat. It's a bit schizophrenic in the mouth but somehow the peat and rum sweetness echo back and forth and amazingly works very well.

Absolutely nailed the list for me. I have bought bottles from all those distilleries in the past. The only exception was an Aberfeldy 28 year old I had which was exceptional not only in flavour and character but cost too. All of them are OK and it's probably good to have a bottle of one of them around to share with those friends who are not really whisky drinkers but say they are because they drink Johnny Walker Black or Glenfiddich.
Over and above that list there are a few others for me that just never seem to have me reaching for them on the shelf in my local whisky shops. They include:
Aberlour - good stuff but there's other sherried stuff I like more.
    Glenlivet - no explanation necessary
Core range Laphroaig - this is not for me at all. The cask strength releases and older stuff is excellent.
Compass Box - There are a few I like, but again the core range is "eh" and the special release stuff is overpriced.
Talisker - Other stuff I just prefer
