Like Craig said dont be put of by the Infantry in terms of trade. You can get level2 telecoms and work for BT, you can get Truck licence, if you become an NCO you can get level3 management all civvy qualifications by doing an infantry job. You also got RAF and Navy with good jobs. Good luck with your choices

Starting training for the Mercian regiment on Sunday. I’m joining this regiment honestly because at the time it was soonest infantry regiment I could join. I’m joining the army not to build a career but to build myself as a person. To build confidence, not that I’m shy or anything like that but from what I’ve witnessed the infantry is probably the best job on the planet for building confidence in yourself just because of its dangerous nature. The confidence you build not only helps you in any future career you might have but it improves virtually every aspect of your life including your social life and family life just due to the self discipline, hard work ethic, teamwork and people skills that you pick up from spending time both on deployment and in training.
I’m 18. I can’t see myself having a long term career in the army but I won’t truly know until later on in life. It’s hard to say what I will want in 5+ years because it’s likely I’ll have a completely differing outlook on this subject.

Craig, worth pointing out the actual bias by the Army recruiting office staff. I initially had RMP followed by Paras. I ended up in the Guards as they told me as a gullible 16 year old, oh 9 month wait for RMP and you can do parachuting in the Guards! This was based purely on them being in the Guards and also due to location within their recruitment area. Naturally they try and recruit into their regiment but I do think they should be a bit more neutral in that process. I'm not saying they lied but they did stretch the truth. Their role is to assist you in making that informed decision in conjunction with your test results etc. One to watch out for to be fair.

I'll be moving to the UK once my citizenship comes through, then I am going to apply for the army. In the meantime, I am trying to research possible roles.
I am joining the army mostly for self development, it's something that I have my heart set on even though/especially bcs it's out of my comfort zone. I also think that it'll be a good step to take as an immigrant.
I am looking for something that will help me develop a well rounded set of skills (self defence, fitness, fire arm training, vital survival skills, 1st aid etc...) while supporting me doing additional courses (including getting my driving license). I am thinking of pursuing mortuary technology at some point, so I'm keeping anything that helps in that realm in mind.
It seems that infantry is a good sort of catch-all for people who aren't entirely sure which direction they're going in yet, but have a basic idea. I am also interested in the paratroopers and intelligence.
Any recommendations would be appreciated. Be well. 🍄

Remember you will leave at some point, the army has lots of roles that have civvy qualifications so plan for leaving from day 1 so pick something that we serve you when you leave. Everyone plans to do 22 years but not many do. It is great when you are there, you get to lots of amazing things, go around the world, make friends for life but there are also times when it is dull, very boring and may not be for you. I went in as a 17 yr old, left 8 years later as an engineer, HVAC technician and Army Diver and was offered jobs even before I had left. I don't regret a minute of it but glad I left when I did.

In Indonesia, recruits who join as enlisted or non commisioned officer ranks can choose what unit they want to be part of in the military. But cadets who join as officers will be chosen based on their Psychological test in which unit they are suitable for leading. My cousin whos father was Infantry was chosen to be commisioned in Artillery, sadly he didnt make it to become infantry, but it still made him proud, maybe hes father and him had different traits

Hello Craig I'm thinking of joining from commonwealth nation Nigeria to be precise but my extended aunty living in the uk said to my mom that I should not join the British army that racism is practiced in the army and I might be killed. That if she allows me join she should be ready to mourn me soon.... I'm really devastated right now... what should I do as I'm discouraged

You should say to them, I know that I may die, but the chances are slim and I want to do this, tell them your reasons and maybe they will listen. Follow your heart, because no one can do that for you.

It's a great job if you like animals and particularly like Horses and Dogs.
