Summary:
Unfolding in exquisitely photographed poetic rhythms and coloured landscapes, this is the simple but cynical tale of Muniyandi (Srinivasan), a labourer on the Indo-Swiss Mooraru farm in Kerala. He brings a wife, Sivagami (Smita Patil), from the temple town of Chidambaram. She befriends Shankaran (Bharath Gopi), the estate manager and amateur photographer with a shady past.
Their friendship transgresses the hypocritical but deeply felt behavioural codes the local men inherited from previous social formations: i.e. that women are to be denied what men are allowed to enjoy. The tragedy that ensues (Muniyandi suicide, Shankaran’s descent into alcoholism and Sivagami withering into a worn-out old woman) condenses the tensions between socioeconomic change (as tractors and machinery invade the landscape) and people’s refusal to confront the corresponding need to change their mentality. The tension is, however, most graphically felt in the way Sivagami life-force is extended into the naturescape, which is shot around her with garish colour (e.g. purple flower-beds) suggesting that the very nature of Kerala’s beauty and fertility, as she represents it, has been irredeemably corrupted from within.
The film then shifts to the equally oppressive cloisters of the Chidambaram temple, as Shankaran and Sivagami meet once more: he is there to purify himself through religious ritual while she is now employed to look after the footwear of devotees and tourists. The nihilist film ends with a rising crane shot as the camera can only avert its gaze and escape, tilting up along a temple wall towards an open sky.

കേരളത്തിന്റെയും തമിഴ്‌നാടിന്റെയും അതിർത്തിയിലുള്ള മലയോരമേഖലയിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന വിശാലമായ സർക്കാർ ഫാമിൽ ഓഫീസ് സൂപ്രണ്ടായി ശങ്കരൻ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നു .. സഹപ്രവർത്തകനായ ജേക്കബ് ഫീൽഡ് സൂപ്പർവൈസറും ജോലിക്ക് അടിമയുമാണ്. രണ്ട് പുരുഷന്മാരും അവരുടെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളിൽ ധ്രുവങ്ങളാണ്. ജേക്കബ്ബ് ഒരു സാധാരണക്കാരനായ വ്യക്തിയാണ്, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സാമൂഹിക അഹങ്കാരം ധാർമ്മികതയോടുള്ള അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ എളുപ്പമുള്ള മനോഭാവവുമായി പൊരുത്തപ്പെടുന്നില്ല. ശങ്കരനാകട്ടെ സൗമ്യനായ ഏകാന്ത സ്വഭാവക്കാരനാണ്. തൊഴിലാളികളുമായി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് എളുപ്പവും സൗഹൃദപരവുമായ ബന്ധമുണ്ട്. ഫാമിലെ തൊഴിലാളിയായ മുനിയാണ്ടി ഭീരുവായ ദൈവഭക്തനാണ്. കന്നുകാലികളെ നോക്കലാണ് അവന്റെ ജോലി. ഒരു ദിവസം താൻ വിവാഹം കഴിക്കാൻ തന്റെ ഗ്രാമത്തിലേക്ക് പോവുകയാണെന്ന് അയാൾ ശങ്കരനോട് ഏറ്റുപറയുന്നു. ജേക്കബിനോട് അവധി ചോദിച്ചപ്പോൾ, കല്യാണം കഴിഞ്ഞ് ഉടൻ മടങ്ങിവരണമെന്ന് ജേക്കബ് ക്രൂരമായി പറയുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ശങ്കരൻ അവനെ തന്റെ മുറിയിൽ തന്നോടൊപ്പം കുടിക്കാൻ ക്ഷണിക്കുന്നു. ഈ ചെറിയ അപചയം ദൈവം ശ്രദ്ധിക്കില്ല എന്ന് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്നു. കുറച്ച് സ്വിഗ് റം തുല്യ വേഗത്തിൽ എടുക്കുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് മുനിയാണ്ടി ഒരു പെട്ടെന്നുള്ള പ്രാർത്ഥന പറയുന്നു. എന്നിട്ട് തറയിൽ ഇരുന്നു ഭഗവാനെ സ്തുതിച്ചു പാടാൻ തുടങ്ങുന്നു. നാണംകെട്ട ശങ്കരൻ അവനെ തന്റെ ക്വാർട്ടേഴ്സിലേക്ക് സഹായിക്കണം.

ഓരോ പുതിയ ശബ്ദത്തോടും ഓരോ പുതിയ സീനിനോടും ഭയന്ന മാനിനെപ്പോലെ ശിവകാമി ആദ്യം പ്രതികരിക്കുന്നു. കൂറ്റൻ പശുക്കൾ, മോട്ടോർബൈക്കിന്റെ ശബ്ദം, ഒരു പുതിയ മുഖം, എല്ലാം അവളെ തന്നിലേക്ക് തന്നെ പിൻവലിക്കാൻ പ്രേരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ഇതിന് സമയമെടുക്കും, പക്ഷേ സാവധാനത്തിലും ഭീരുത്വത്തോടെയും അവൾ ഈ പുതിയ മനോഹരമായ ലോകത്തിലേക്ക് അവളുടെ ആദ്യത്തെ ഉറപ്പുള്ള ചുവടുകൾ എടുക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങുന്നു. മുനിയാണ്ടി ജോലിക്ക് പോകുമ്പോൾ അവൾ ലക്ഷ്യമില്ലാതെ ചുറ്റിനടന്ന് തോട്ടങ്ങളിൽ അലഞ്ഞുനടക്കുന്നു, അത്യധികം അത്ഭുതത്തോടെ ഓരോ പൂവിലും തൊട്ടു. മുനിയാണ്ടി അവൾക്ക് ഭയങ്കര ആരാധന നൽകുമ്പോൾ, ശങ്കരൻ സൗമ്യമായ ആശങ്കയോടെ അവളെ സമീപിക്കുന്നു. അവൾക്കിപ്പോൾ അവനെ പേടിയില്ല. അവൾ വീട്ടിൽ എഴുതുന്ന ഒരു കത്തിൽ ഒരു വിലാസം എഴുതേണ്ടിവരുമ്പോൾ അവൾ അവന്റെ അടുത്തേക്ക് പോകുന്നു, അവന്റെ ക്യാമറയിൽ നിന്ന് ഒഴിഞ്ഞുമാറുന്നില്ല. ശങ്കരന് അവൾ സൗമ്യയും സുന്ദരിയുമാണ്, കൃഷിയിടത്തിലെ പച്ചപ്പ് നിറഞ്ഞ ഭൂപ്രകൃതി പോലെ.
ഒരു ദിവസം ശങ്കരന്റെ വീടിനു താഴെയുള്ള റോഡിൽ ഒരു കാർ നിർത്തുന്നു. ശങ്കരനെ കാണാൻ രണ്ട് ചെറുപ്പക്കാരായ സഹപ്രവർത്തകർ പ്രായപൂർത്തിയാകാത്ത രണ്ട് സിനിമാതാരങ്ങളെ കൂടെ കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നു. അഭിനേതാക്കൾ അതിഥികളാകുന്ന ഒരു ചടങ്ങിലേക്ക് അവർ പോകുകയാണ്. പരന്നുകിടക്കുന്ന പുൽത്തകിടികളിൽ ശങ്കരനും സന്ദർശകരും കാഷ്വൽ ഡ്രിങ്കിനായി ഇരിക്കുന്നു. താഴെയുള്ള റോഡിൽ ജേക്കബ് പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുകയും ശങ്കരൻ അഭിനന്ദിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. അവൻ വന്ന് അവരോടൊപ്പം ചേരുന്നു, സംഭാഷണം ഫാമിലെ പുതുമുഖമായ സുന്ദരിയായ ശിവകാമിയിലേക്ക് തിരിയുന്നു. അവളോടുള്ള താൽപര്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ജേക്കബ് ശങ്കരനെ കളിയാക്കുന്നു. പെട്ടെന്ന് ശങ്കരൻ കോപാകുലനായി, ജേക്കബിനെ ശാരീരികമായി ആക്രമിക്കുന്നു, അവരെല്ലാം അവനെ ലജ്ജിച്ചും അസ്വസ്ഥനുമായി വിട്ടുപോയി. കൂട്ടംകൂടിയ ഇരുട്ടിൽ, ശങ്കരൻ പുല്ലിൽ കിടന്നുറങ്ങുന്നു, ഒരു സാധാരണ തമാശയോടുള്ള തന്റെ വിചിത്രമായ പ്രതികരണത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ചിന്തിക്കുന്നു. ശിവകാമിയിൽ നിന്ന് അയാൾക്ക് എന്താണ് വേണ്ടത്?
അതിനിടെ, ഫാമിൽ ശിവകാമിക്ക് ജോലി ഒരുക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമത്തിലാണ് ജേക്കബ്. മുനിയാണ്ടിക്ക് അതിൽ ഒട്ടും സന്തോഷമില്ല. എന്നാൽ തന്റെ ഏകാന്തജീവിതത്തിൽ മടുത്ത ശിവകാമി തന്നെ കൃഷിയിടത്തിൽ ജോലിചെയ്യാൻ തയ്യാറായില്ല. കന്നുകാലികളുമായി മുനിയാണ്ടിയെ കണ്ട ജേക്കബ് മുനിയാണ്ടിയുടെ ഭാര്യക്ക് എന്തെങ്കിലും ജോലി കണ്ടെത്തിയെന്ന് അവനോട് പറഞ്ഞു. ജേക്കബിന്റെ ഉദ്ദേശശുദ്ധിയിൽ സംശയം തോന്നിയ മുനിയാണ്ടി വിനയപൂർവ്വം ജോലി നിരസിക്കുന്നു. സാധാരണഗതിയിൽ "മാനസികത" എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നവരുമായി കൂട്ടുകൂടാത്ത ജേക്കബ് ദേഷ്യപ്പെട്ടു, ഇനി മുതൽ നൈറ്റ് ഡ്യൂട്ടി ചെയ്യാൻ മുനിയാണ്ടിയോട് ആജ്ഞാപിക്കുന്നു.
രാത്രി കാലിത്തൊഴുത്തിൽ മുനിയാണ്ടി ഓരോ ശബ്ദവും കേൾക്കുന്നു. ഒരു മോട്ടോർ ബൈക്ക് പാഞ്ഞുപോകുന്നു, അവൻ തൽക്ഷണം ജാഗരൂകരാകുന്നു. ആ ജേക്കബ് തന്റെ ശിവകാമിയുടെ അടുത്തേക്ക് പോവുകയാണോ? അവൻ ഷെഡിൽ നിന്ന് ഇറങ്ങി വീട്ടിലേക്ക് ഓടുന്നു. അവന്റെ വീട് ശാന്തവും ഇരുണ്ടതുമാണ്. പക്ഷേ, മുനിയാണ്ടി ഭയന്ന് വാതിലിൽ മുഷ്ടി മുട്ടി. ഒരു രൂപം വീടിന്റെ പുറകിൽ നിന്ന് വേഗത്തിൽ പോയി ഇരുട്ടിലേക്ക് അപ്രത്യക്ഷമാകുന്നു. ജേക്കബല്ല, മുനിയാണ്ടി വിശ്വസിച്ചിരുന്ന ശങ്കരൻ.
പിറ്റേന്ന് അതിരാവിലെ കന്നുകാലി തൊഴുത്തിന് പുറത്ത് ഒരു ജനക്കൂട്ടം തടിച്ചുകൂടുന്നു. ഭിത്തിയിൽ ഉയരത്തിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ജനലുകളുടെ പകുതി തുറന്ന ഷട്ടറുകളിലൂടെ, ഫാമിലെ തൊഴിലാളികൾ അകത്തെ ഇരുട്ടിലേക്ക് ഉറ്റുനോക്കുന്നു, അവിടെ ഒരു വെളിച്ചത്തിന്റെ തണ്ടിൽ, മരത്തടിയിൽ മുനിയാണ്ടിയുടെ ഇരുണ്ട, തുളുമ്പുന്ന രൂപം തൂങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്നു. അവന്റെ നിർജീവ ശരീരം മെല്ലെ അങ്ങോട്ടും ഇങ്ങോട്ടും ആടുന്നു, ബീം ഒരു ക്രീക്കിങ്ങ് ശബ്ദമുണ്ടാക്കുന്നു. ശങ്കരൻ പുറത്ത് നിന്ന് ഷട്ടറുകളിലൊന്ന് ഉയർത്തി, മുനിയാണ്ടിയുടെ മൃത മുഖം സ്വന്തം നാണത്തോടെ അവനെ നേരിടുന്നു.
ശങ്കരൻ ഓടിപ്പോയി. അവൻ കാട്ടിലൂടെ ഓടുന്നു, ഉള്ളിൽ പിശാച് പിന്തുടരുന്നു, രാത്രി കൂടുന്നതുവരെ അവൻ കാടിന്റെ കുഷ്യൻ തറയിൽ തളർന്നു വീഴുന്നു. രാത്രിയിൽ, അവന്റെ രണ്ട് ഇളയ സഹപ്രവർത്തകർ അവരുടെ ക്വാർട്ടേഴ്സിൽ കിടക്കാൻ തയ്യാറെടുക്കുന്നു, വാതിലിൽ ഒരു മുട്ട് കേൾക്കുന്നു. ശങ്കരൻ ആണ്, തപസ്സിനായി തിരിച്ചു വരൂ. അവന്റെ മാനസികവും ശാരീരികവുമായ തളർച്ച പുരുഷന്മാർക്ക് മനസ്സിലാകുന്നില്ല. അവർ അവനെ അവരുടെ ഒരു മുറിയിൽ കിടത്തി, അവൻ മരിച്ചവരെപ്പോലെ ഉറങ്ങുന്നു, ദിവസത്തിന്റെ ഭീകരതയിൽ നിന്ന് ഏതാനും മണിക്കൂറുകൾ രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു.
കുറ്റബോധം ശങ്കരന്റെ ജീവിതത്തെ മാറ്റിമറിക്കുന്നു. കുറച്ചുകാലം അവൻ ജോലി ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് നഗരത്തിൽ വേരുകളില്ലാതെ ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് അലഞ്ഞുനടക്കുന്നു. അവൻ മദ്യപാനിയായി മാറുന്നു, ഒരു മദ്യപാനത്തിൽ നിന്ന് മറ്റൊന്നിലേക്ക് അലസമായി പോകുന്നു. അവന്റെ സുഹൃത്തുക്കൾ അവനെ നഗരത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രിന്റിംഗ് പ്രസിൽ ജോലി കണ്ടെത്തുന്നു, അവിടെ അവൻ പ്രൂഫ് ഷീറ്റുകൾക്ക് മുകളിലൂടെ സ്വപ്നം കാണുന്നു. എന്നാൽ മുനിയാണ്ടിക്കൊപ്പം ജീവിതം നിലച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ്. ആടുന്ന ശരീരവും ക്രീക്കിംഗ് ബീമും അവനെ അന്നുമുതൽ കൂട്ടുപിടിച്ചു. അവൻ ഇടയ്ക്കിടെ സന്ദർശിക്കുന്ന ഡോക്ടർ ഒരിക്കലും മതത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിക്കുന്നത് നിർത്തുന്നില്ല. " ഗീത വായിക്കൂ ", അദ്ദേഹം പറയുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഉള്ളിലെ പിശാച് കീഴടങ്ങുകയില്ല. "ഒരു അവധിക്കാലം എടുക്കൂ", ഡോക്ടർ പറയുന്നു. "ഒരു മതപരമായ സ്ഥലത്ത് പോകുക, നിങ്ങൾക്ക് മനസ്സമാധാനം ലഭിക്കും."
ശങ്കരൻ വീണ്ടും അലഞ്ഞുതിരിയുന്നു. അവൻ ചിദംബരം ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലേക്ക് പോകുന്നു , ശിവൻ ആദിമ ഫാലസിൽ നിന്ന് മനുഷ്യാത്മാവിനെ അതിന്റെ ഭൗമിക ഷെല്ലിൽ നിന്ന് മോചിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കോസ്മിക് നർത്തകനായി രൂപാന്തരപ്പെട്ട് ശിവൻ രൂപാന്തരപ്പെട്ടു . ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ അകത്തെ ചുറ്റമ്പലത്തിൽ നിന്ന് പുറത്തിറങ്ങുന്ന ശങ്കരൻ തന്റെ ചെരിപ്പുകൾ ധരിക്കാനും പ്രവേശന കവാടത്തിൽ അവരെ നോക്കുന്ന സ്ത്രീക്ക് പണം നൽകാനും നിർത്തി. അവൾ ഒരു പാവം ജീവിയാണ്, ഇരുണ്ട മൂലയിൽ ഒതുങ്ങിക്കൂടിയിരിക്കുന്നു. എന്നിട്ടും അവൾ മുഖം ഉയർത്തിയപ്പോൾ ശങ്കരൻ ശിവകാമിയെ കാണുന്നു. പ്രായമായ, ക്ഷീണിച്ച, അവളുടെ മുഖത്ത് ഭയാനകമായ മുറിവ്, സ്വയം കൊല്ലുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് മുനിയാണ്ടി അവളെ വെട്ടിയ സ്ഥലത്ത്.
ശങ്കരന്റെ ജീവിതം നിറഞ്ഞു. അവൻ തന്റെ യാത്രയുടെ അവസാനത്തിൽ എത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

Natural Acting At Its Peak
I just watched Chidambaram movie. Its soo good in terms of visuals - equivalent to The Godfather movie, and the songs in the movie were soo good. Made me rethink how far we changed as a society with the technology and the fast paced life. It made me realize we have to take a pause and enjoy and cherish our surroundings and the life itself. However, movie took a different turn at the end which was too mature for that time and even now.
Why is this movie unheard of or not so popular? It deserves better reach and discussions. I have seen studio Ghibili anime movies and people discussing about the silence scenes with good visuals on those movies. But this movie is even better than those as i could relate the songs and music in the background and the visuals and scenes of india in 1980s.
