These are the kind of videos that we need: short, to the point and fully explain of what needs to be done! I just bought a Camaro '89 a few days ago and I'm trying to absorb as much knowledge on them as I can. Thanks for your videos! Subscribed already!
This is one of the best videos I've seen so far on demonstrating the work involved in doing this repair to the 3rd gen. What makes it look easy in this video is that the differential has been removed beforehand. Getting the differential out of the way is a large portion of the work involved. If the differential is still installed on the car, removing that section of exhaust pipe can be challenging. What I've done is to disconnect the rear passenger side shock, remove the rear passenger side wheel, remove the spring, disconnect the rear passenger side lower control arm at the differential, disconnect the emergency brake cable at the caliper and then lift the exhaust pipe up and over the rotor and caliper assembly, and then pull the exhaust out that way. I've done this repair on my 3rd gen roughly 6 - 8 times over the past 30 years. I can do it from start to finish in just about 3 hours. Very challenging job for sure. From recollection I think GM lists this job at a ridiculous 1 hour and 45 minutes job, or something like that. I refuse to cut a hole in the car just to follow the path of least resistance.
Currently having having the same problem with my 87 trans am gta i hear no prime to the pump when key is on ,it turns on but have to push the peddle lightly to keep it running
@@natividadaguayo3318 All the times the fuel pump in my 87' GTA went out, it went out completely and the car did not start at all. Sounds like the fuel pump in your car is not running well or you have a clog somewhere, most probable is a bad/clogged fuel filter. When was the last time you changed the fuel filter? If you don't already know it's located under the car on the driver side right below the driver rear passenger seat. Symptom of a bad/clogged fuel filter is the car will want to die when letting off the gas when coming to a stop sign or stop light.
Hey bro, Thanks for the update on the gas tank removal, I have a 87 pontiac firebird 2.8L and it was a huge problem changing the fuel pump the first time, I don't know why the GM design it this way but is a lot of work doing it.

I did this and the pump failed 3 weeks later. I gave up and went to a body shop and had them make a proper trap door for quick access. I know it's not the right way to go about it, but at least it was done professionally.

Great video!! Say just a heads up if you have to replace the gas tank which I had to do on my 92 Z28 the aftermarket tanks don't fit very well because of the angle of the filler neck . I'm sure a lot you know that but just thought I would bring it up. I did notice when I dropped my gas tank that someone down the road did cut the sheet metal I guess to make a door for the fuel pump but for some reason they changed there mind and welded it back in. So please 3rd Gen Guy don't come after me I didn't do it LOL.

I used to feel that way. I even once modded the lines with flared fittings. In the end I decide to run an inline pump. I think mine was branded Hypertech. Yeah... If I have to change a pump again, it will require a nut driver, and a jack. Runs very well. If I ever go back to an intank pump it will be a modern plastic configuration; to fight any cornering starvation, only. Great video though! Having quite a few years to reflect on the idea of an access hole.. It makes no difference in the car stucturally. There must be changes made to the lines to make it worthwhile; making a disconnect close to the unit. I said 'unit'.
In the process today, most importantly - get as much gas out of it as you can. My third gen is starting to rough idle, last changed the fuel pump 8 years ago, I've changed the fuel regulator, but still same result, minus replacing the fuel pump, what else could I check? IAC or TPS?
Hello I do need some help. I got this old 86 2.8L camaro from a friend. If you can make a video on the fuel line diagram it would help me a lot. I am getting gas coming out of the charcoal canister.
In the middle of attempting this, decided to watch a vid to see the correct way, first step remove the rear suspension, immediately thought yep that's why it ain't coming out, they never thought the car would outlast the pump when they designed this. Also this Camaro is straight pipe all the way from the manifold so yeah. Also I double, triple, and quadruple checked that the fuel pump was not running, after hearing this prime in the video, I know for sure that the pump was getting power and was not running.
I do have a question: I made the mistake of taking mine to a shop and they completely screwed up the repair. I've spent the past year or so fixing their screw ups (it goes well beyond the tank) and have found a gas leak by my fuel neck. I bought a neckless tank and a fuel neck. They lost my fuel neck but replaced it "free of charge". It's leaking at the fuel neck. Could I use the epoxy to fix this oversight?
I’m making a new weather pack connector like you did in the video. My center pin connection isn’t slotted the male connector on the body side of the car. It looks like you slotted your female end on the pump side, is that correct? I was probably going to do that myself.
HA!,HA, HA, !!!!! Ashamed to admit I cut up the package tray with Wiss metal snips. Used a low clearence tubing cutter to cut the lines on the pump & put the new pump in on the rubber lines with hose clamps. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 It was my teenage daughters boyfriend & I did it for free soooooo, 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey, I've had a problem with my fuel tank becoming extremely pressurized after the fuel inside warms up from the exhaust. There is so much pressure in my tank that when I open the gas cap to fill up, there is an explosive rush of vapors that literally spray out liquid fuel as it is venting. In addition, my car always smells like gas from the engine compartment around the canister, and the charcoal canister system doesn't seem to be working right and appears to be getting liquid fuel into it. What could it be? For the tank pressure: I have the heat shield in place above the muffler and I have replaced the vent on the hose at the gas tank. At the cannister: I have replaced the cannister twice as well as solenoids, hoses, and valves near it. I'm wondering if the hose that the vent attaches to is somehow clogged inside the tank not allowing it to vent. I'm also wondering if somehow someone crossed lines before I acquired the car which is causing unused liquid fuel to be going to the cannister rather than back to the tank. I own the official factory shop manual and the CD version, but this still bewilders me. If you happen to know of a resource that does well explaining the fuel and vapor system on this car it would be tremendously appreciated. It is for a 92 5.7L Z28. Our neighbor used to have a 92 RS as well, and when I brought this up to my dad, he mentioned our neighbor also had the same problem and after multiple trips to the dealer, they could never fix it and he eventually traded it in.
I did a video on installing a new vent valve. ruclips.net/video/Y70jB-wVnbc/видео.html no gas should shootout of the cap, just a slight hiss is normal. the tank has 4 lines the 3/8 crimped line is the fuel out the 5/16 line is the return the 1/4 line is the EVAP the normal 3/8 line is the vent.
as I mentioned in the video, my axle was out getting rebuilt. you have to drop the axle far enough to get the tank out. means unbolting the shocks, and brake line brackets
doesn't look like Rock Auto has it for your year. i'm not too familiar with the early 3rd gen stuff. best to search through thirdgen.org for an answer.
I am going from tpi to carb on my 85. I have my tank and pump assembly removed. Been looking for an older model 3rd gen pickup with no luck, any suggestions? Are they all the same? Ps going mechanical pump.
@@3rdGenGuy it's referred as that because it propelles the vehicle. I just did a fuel pump for a customer the other day. Had to take the rear axle out lol
Great video! I just dropped mine and found that it’s a spectra premium replacement (po put it there). Now mine doesn’t have that bucket for the pump. Any one has any ideas how to properly baffle the pump to prevent starvation?
I have a 84 Z28 its carburated there's no electric fuel pump but I want to install a external fuel pump by Holley I need not do all this but hook it up to the fuel line
Not sure why you had to remove the wheels or do anything with the suspension. I simply backed the rear wheels onto ramps, got under the car and changed it. There was ample room and access. Didn’t have to remove anything else.
the axle was already removed for repairs as stated early in the video. you do not have to remove the axle to replace the pump. just dropping the axle is enough
Sorry, I was only referring to the fuel ventilator valve in my comment, not the fuel pump, which your video is about. Not sure what happened but I had been watching some short videos on that ventilator valve and commented on that.
Fixn cut mine if that's what it is it started out quiting on me mechanic says it's the computer so he charges me 800 bucks to fix it and it ran worse than it did before it went out so I got to looking at the distributor found cracks in the button and the cap changed it all runs better but it quit again now it's not firing and fuel pump quit at same time so this leads me to believe I got a faulty ecm I think
@@3rdGenGuy I have one question if I were to get these lines would I want the inside diameter to be that size or the outside? And can I ask what brand the rubber lines or what material they are? I believe my return line is damaged and need to replace it
the Priming? before it was like 3 seconds, the new pump primed for 10 seconds. Not really sure why. it's been a while with the new pump and it's holding up fine.
for the record, i'm not against the trap door. i'm against cutting into a car and hacking it up. you can make a nice trap door, or be a savage and tear up the metal.
I bought my Formula 350 new in 1989. I went through this replacement. It was a royal pain. I am going to cut the hole. Gonna do the same on my 2005 Grand Am GT. Good video though and l understand your stance. Just disagree.
To preserve it, it's worth it. But if it's already a project, you might as well save yourself the hassle. I bought mine with the access panel already cut and currently needing to replace an old, broken line, this saved me an entire day of work just to find out what line was broken
@@darquille could not agree more. I love working on my Formula. In the middle of restoring it with new paint and interior. I would hate to be on the road and have a pump die on me. Pay a sorts of money and time to fix it. Instead just pop the door and install. This happens with my grand am and I paid a ton of cash to get it fixed. Never again
Couple of things: First, given the unreliability of fuel pumps for these cars, making a proper access port is both logical and superior in every way to dismantling your entire rear suspension. Second, what kind of tape did you use, that yellow golden stuff on the weather pack section? Third, good luck finding me, because she's getting a trap door, I only want to drop this tank one damn time and put in the suspension once. If my pump goes, I have no interest in dealing with all that nonsense.
If you purchase a quality fuel pump, you should not have to do this more than once. Hurting the structural rigidity of a unibody car and potentially installing an unsafe access port is not something many people are willing to do. Very RUclipsrs are in-depth about proper maintenance procedures with these cars, with 3rd Gen Guy being one of the most resourceful I've seen yet. You can cut up and ruin your car all you want, ultimately it is your car, but I and a lot of people prefer not to ruin our stuff, put ourselves and passengers in unnecessary danger, and treat things with care.
@@skulltrail5757 you do realize GM has made dozens of Unibody cars with built in Fuel Pump Access right? Get off your high horse kid. I operate on specific guidelines given to me by people who know more about this stuff than I do. Most amateurs do that. Following that logic, most amateurs are not interested in cutting a fuel access door if it means that them messing it up(which is more likely than not with inexperienced people) and getting fumes in their cars can mean brain damage or permanent structural damage. More experienced people may be more comfortable doing this. I do know that fuel pump access doors have been made that, with the proper skills, can be made very structurally stable(obviously!) and I am not trying to debate that.
I didn't modify the weather pack, just shoved new wires int the old one.
What brand do u recomend on a fuel pump assembly?
whatever OEM you can get.
Acdelco, Bosh exe.
The shop that rebuilt my car cut a hole. Wasn’t happy about it. I’ll give you their info
The access door that GM should have engineered into these cars but just didn't?? Oh, yeah!
You ever think about adding a drain plug to the fuel tank?
I hate not.
I just rig my fuel pump to run when the care is off and I use that to drain the tank.
I have a convertible and I don't want to cut an access panel. Now the pump is out and there's fuel in that tank.
you can try to use a syphon to drain it, but it's pretty hard to get that working on a 3rd gen.
I did a video on installing a new vent valve.
ruclips.net/video/Y70jB-wVnbc/видео.html
no gas should shootout of the cap,
just a slight hiss is normal.
the tank has 4 lines
the 3/8 crimped line is the fuel out
the 5/16 line is the return
the 1/4 line is the EVAP
the normal 3/8 line is the vent.
Anyone have a parts list?
I got this issue right now what should I pay for parts and labor
Do you have to drop the axel or can you leave it?
as I mentioned in the video, my axle was out getting rebuilt.
you have to drop the axle far enough to get the tank out.
means unbolting the shocks, and brake line brackets
Hello I have a 1983 Camaro Z28 Crossfire would anyone know we’re can I buy the sending unit or the whole kit with fuel pump ?
doesn't look like Rock Auto has it for your year.
i'm not too familiar with the early 3rd gen stuff.
best to search through thirdgen.org for an answer.
I am going from tpi to carb on my 85. I have my tank and pump assembly removed. Been looking for an older model 3rd gen pickup with no luck, any suggestions? Are they all the same? Ps going mechanical pump.
honestly don't know. i'd try to find a junkyard car and steal that tank, or retro fit a 4th gen plastic tank.
By axle I'm assuming you mean propeller/drive shaft?
this ain't a boat lol
@@3rdGenGuy it's referred as that because it propelles the vehicle. I just did a fuel pump for a customer the other day. Had to take the rear axle out lol
Great video! I just dropped mine and found that it’s a spectra premium replacement (po put it there). Now mine doesn’t have that bucket for the pump. Any one has any ideas how to properly baffle the pump to prevent starvation?
Convert to a plastic 4th gen fuel tank
Excellent well made video but this makes want to cut a hole in the floor pan very much
I Have a pump panel welded to my car.
very clean install.
but I really encourage people to drop the tank before welding in a panel.
@3rdGenGuy after the video, I went and checked. It has some electrical pannel door attached over the the hole. This car has seen a few owners
What size are the fuel lines you replaced??
vent line is 3/8in
EVAP is 1/4
and the return like is 5/16
for the rubber lines for the tank
@@3rdGenGuy I have one question if I were to get these lines would I want the inside diameter to be that size or the outside? And can I ask what brand the rubber lines or what material they are? I believe my return line is damaged and need to replace it
@@yaasielmoreno1135 that would be the inside diameter
there's a
3/8 vent
7/16 fuel line
5/16 return line
1/4 line EVAP
How long did it regularly take?
the Priming?
before it was like 3 seconds, the new pump primed for 10 seconds. Not really sure why. it's been a while with the new pump and it's holding up fine.
@@3rdGenGuy just taking the whole gas tank down!
@@3rdGenGuy I have a 1984 Camaro and I know there’s rust and junk down there and this helps a lot to
No bigger rivalry around to cut or not to cut.
god why did GM make the fuel pump difficult to get to?
I didnt get the statement at the beginning of the video, but after further research... i honestly laugh so hard. WHY ARE PEOPLE DOING THIS?!?!?
for the record, i'm not against the trap door. i'm against cutting into a car and hacking it up.
you can make a nice trap door, or be a savage and tear up the metal.
Never again
Detroit Speed makes a weld in access panel, it's no big deal really
I cut the hole….. buttt I’m doing it the right way now
It’s Easy to say that ain’t no transmission in there
you mean the axle right?
I have a video on removing that as well.
1982-1984 LG4 has no electric fuel pump
all the tanks are mostly the same, so this guide works for those with mechanical pumps as well.
Lo tuvimos que bajar el tanque 2 veces por bombas vieja y la otra por que fallo 😐😐😐😐😐
And if done well, this removes very little sheet metal and can be built so that it is quite strong indeed. But sure, go ahead and tell me more about your engineering degree kid 😂
@@ariyanadumon4549 This will be my final word with you about this issue because I obviously will not be able to convince you. You are right, I do not have an engineering degree, but I trust that you do not have an engineering degree either, most people do not...So moot point on your end I guess?
I operate on specific guidelines given to me by people who know more about this stuff than I do. Most amateurs do that. Following that logic, most amateurs are not interested in cutting a fuel access door if it means that them messing it up(which is more likely than not with inexperienced people) and getting fumes in their cars can mean brain damage or permanent structural damage. More experienced people may be more comfortable doing this. I do know that fuel pump access doors have been made that, with the proper skills, can be made very structurally stable(obviously!) and I am not trying to debate that. But they can much easier be made horribly.
I do not understand why you are watching this video. Allow people to make their own decisions on this issue and leave everyone else alone. You are projecting really hard and justifying your own behavior by flaming a video that made a quip about people who create very poorly made access doors(that very obviously rustled you the wrong way). Attacking videos and people who will not reassure you on a decision you have already made and advising people to do something recklessly is not constructive.
@@skulltrail5757 I wouldn't have even cared of he hadn't thrown shade about hunting people who did this. But opening like that when there are literally hundreds of these done in a way that endangers nobody, there's literally tutorials about making them even seal properly so your fume bitch isn't even a thing. No, I'm not an Engineer, I fabricate and do a fuck load of bodywork so yeah, I think it's shitty when people immediately think this is a bad mod because of some fucking memes. Fuck yourself dude.
@@ariyanadumon4549 Oh okay I see now. Literally chimping over a 1 sentence joke. Absolute state.
There are two ways to do anything. He's memeing on both people who cut access doors and people who flame people who cut access doors. He didn't even go into depth on it. It literally doesn't matter what people do to their own cars if they don't care. This is literally just an informative video. Chill now. You've been memed. And you are now perpetuating the "retard fuel pump access door cut apologist who freaks out literally every time", this makes the joke even more funny and I want you to imagine me laughing
Okay now here me out i bought a 91 z28 and I wasn't opposed on dropping the tank but found out the guy who had it before me cut the gateway hatch in the back am I still sought after by third gen cops
Detroit Speed has a VERY nice access panel you can buy. hides the gaping hole
cut a hole in trunk is the only way to go
you can check out my trap door video as well.
to late i cuted already lol
Sucks didn’t show me how to Put the gas tank Back in
10:16-11:30 shows installing the tank.
Please watch the video before saying stuff like that......
I'm cutting it the he'll with all that
what a crazy design failure. this is ridiculous
Or you could just be normal and put a fuel pump access panel in your car. But I think that might be too tough and beyond the scope of ability for most of the people in the comments, lul.
Oh boy cheap chinese fuel pump you will be doing this again very soon most likely less than a year. After the first one went I cut a hole you can knock this whole evolution down to about 1 hour. Good luck though hope you get lucky
I used a OEM AC-Delco replacement.
$80 is not cheap for a Basic 90s GM pump
it's all good bro
to much work and to expensive to send garage took me 1 hr take it cut and change next time no problem lol ha a you don't see it anyway why people make big deal i know why because the garage wants to @#$% you with a 1200.00 bill and now people are getting smarter i done all my work my self by learning on the youtube i saved thousand i aim not feeding these garages i haven't had my cars in garage for more than 20 plus years saved thousands
The right way would be the factory way….according to the factory.
I bought from Holly and very nice WELD IN, FULLY SEALED FROM OUTSIDE VENTILATION FUEL PUMP TRAP DOOR.
Took 5 hrs to install correctly….had to remove some of my interior to do the work.
Same amount of time to do it the factory way…BUT if it ever needs done again…the next guy will find the trap door when he pulls the tank😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
