Nice! I went with Spohn subframe connectors and I love them. You are so right about the squeaks and rattles diminishing. I also love how the car now goes over train-tracks as a big solid piece of metal instead of a flexible belly-pan.
Good work. Think im going to go with this same setup on my 92.
This install is on my 89 firebird list for the updates list thanks for the video AWESOME!!!
Installed spohn ..torq arm adj..trailing arms adj..sub frame connectors.Panhard bar.. .400 turbo 4 in. driveshaft ..1350 joints 370 MOTIVE GEAR 9 BOLT AUSSIE BORG.. 2400 b&m stahl..388 stroker 750 quick fuel..full roller lunati voodoo ..dart aluminum..air gap... 580hp...REAL DEAL...
Hey! That's my car in the opening pictures lmfao! I totally didn't expect that. I took that pic at Robert Sanford's autobody in Nova Scotia, Canada probably 14 years ago now. That's my home built rotisserie that now has a 71 z28 hanging on it. This is my 87 iroc in your vid that is still in pieces to this day.... lots of goodies ready to go though, 400 sbc, afr heads, 704 lift solid roller , jesel shaft mount rockers, a 10 pt cage fit tight to the t-top and a t56 all sitting with it now. Maybe I'll get around to finishing it haha. Still as rust free as it was 14 years ago, it was coated with 2 gallons of epoxy primer, tinted black just after this pic was taken.
I just grabbed a 3rd gen at an Autocross because i don't have Pics of mine running
@@3rdGenGuy nah, the pic of the car from underneath that you drew the subframe connectors on. That's my rig. Just thought I'd let you know I was quite surprised to see my car pictured Haha. No worries, I just figured... what were the chances of perusing RUclips and seeing my car on another channel lol
Thank you so much for your feedback and advice Sir. I apologize for my late reply. Unfortunately I've been stuck at different and crazy workplace. Thank your for always helping me Sir. I'm going to do exactly that. It seems much easier and I like the idea of a lower center of gravity
I just found this subscription. I love this. I have a 83 camaro i want to be autocross quality just for a weekend driver
I did this same install. I love how much more rigid it feels. By any chance are there any ways to fully box and frame this car?
A guy on thirdgen.org put a frame in his. it weighed a fuc ton and didn't help much.
the next step after 2 sets of SFC, is a full Cage.
the cage is the only thing that's gonna make a difference after installing 2 sets of SFC
I had just built a strong 355 for my iroc and tore the floor all the way in half from the right door to the left door!
But what i wanted to say is because i had to deal with the floors,
I welded all my sub-frame members Exactly half above and half below the floor line joining the floor to the members with New carpet and an extra layer of insulation(for noise) and you can barely tell i did it from the inside and i have NO Exhaust Clearance issues or ground clearance problems, If you look under my car they dont slap you in the face, and are more integrated rather than stuck on.
SUB-FRAMES ARE A MUST DO, My car is like a BRICK! I can not tell you what a difference it made.
I've been welding for 30 years and that TIG makes my MIG look like poop.
MIG gets the job done
TIG makes it look nice.
All Thirdgen's should get this done. It's a known fact from the 80's these cars would ratle after reaching 40k miles. I can honestly state it's one of the best improvements you can do to an Iroc.
the 3rd party that GM hired to make the convertibles acually made their own SFC because the doors wouldn't close ha ha
even new these unibodys were cardboard.
40 year welder I THINK yours are fine good job
Shout out for another awesome 3rd gen video! Years ago I got the Competition Engineering bolt ons, just to give my new shell some easy jacking points (obviously I wanted stiffening as well). I can't say I recommend them. I'm going Alstons for inner, and making newer outers myself, going taller on the profile. I love your videos!
I've done inners and outers separately, best to do both.
i agree
Great video. I've been looking for a good video on this. Thanks
I have an 88 TA . I thought of doing both myself!. Right now there are only Competition Engineering bolt ins.. A temporary measure, jut to give me 'safe' jacking points. I discovered I had a rear driverside foot well pan with some rust.. :( Wish I could find a reasonable pan repair piece. Great video! Thanks!
Your videos are absolutely awesome this one also help me to mount the heat shield. Since I couldn't featured out how to put it back
I even reference my own videos because I forget how things went back on.
@@3rdGenGuy 😄👍🍻
Thank you for the great videos. Much appreciate.
Great work on 3rd gen Camaro! Really enjoyed the video's
You did it correctly on a lift with the weight of the car on all 4 wheels.
I was told to use a 4 post lift.
but there a few master fabricators on the forums that claim using a 2 post works fine as long as the load is distributed evenly across the SubFrame.
Im about to do this. Sadly im going to have to do it on ramps in my garage.
ur not alone man.
blocks and jack stands work, it's just not as ideal.
protection from slag/ex is important when ur that close with a MIG gun.
Eh, who has money to waste on renting equipment. More money for parts.
just found your channel and love it! i have owned a 1994 for 22 years :)
So I’m curious why you felt the need to upgrade to the Detroit Speed SFC’s. I love them but the install you did lookes a bridge too far for me. Excellent work as always. Looking t]forward you your response.
the DSE SFC basically gave my car the stiffness of the 2x SFC I had before.
while dropping 30lbs off my car.
that and the Holley t56 cross member gets in the way of the inner SFC.
Great video!!! New subscriber!!
Thinking about this for a 4th gen camaro ss convertible. Dont want to weld it in however
there are Bolt in kits, but weld is the best method by far.
Ayo how do I get sfcs on my 3rd gen firebird with having absolutely no knowledge of welding? I'm savvy with a wrench but this stuff is miles above my head
Have someone with experience welding a SFC on a 3rd gen do it. That would be my advice.
That welding helmet was actually a costume prop from the mad max movie. Worn by a sweaty psychopath on a rat bike.
By any chance do they make the Inner subframe connects for the 4th gen Camaro???
I think 4th gens only have 1 type of SFC. and yes, there's TONS of brands.
I purchased jegs bolt in frame connectors for my 91 rs.am i in trouble with these ?
no, the Jegs ones are fine for street cars.
you can bolt them in, then weld for extra strength.
Wish you had better pictures of exactly where they are mounted.
I have outer sub frame connectetors. And roll cage. Do I need the inners?
most likely no.
the cage stiffens the body alongside the outer SFC.
Thank you for posting this video ,,I Have a question would the outer UMI be good enough for my hard top 3rd gen ?
street cars really only need 1 set.
the Alston inners are 1/2 the weight of the UMI ones but are harder to weld in.
Has anyone used a tubular k member for long while? Have heard they crack and rip? Cheap welds
I was gonna use one, but i heard the same about the poor weld quality.
so i just powder coated my stock one.
i'm an Aerospace welder, so the idea of some MIG monkey making parts i have to drive with makes me cringe.
you have to realize, some MIG moron getting paid $12 an hour to weld those up
they don't purge the inside of the tubes
they don't do penetrant inspections
3rd Gen Guy yeah but i wanted the optional rack and pinion steering instead of the 82 to 84 rip the frame at the powersteering box
so the rack and pinion steering is not really a good option unless you are drag racing.
the issue is, the Racks they sell are too short for the width of 3rd gens.
so the tie-rods arms are WAYYY too long and induce pretty awful Bump steer
the 4th gens have a factory power rack and pinion, but the length of their-arms is FAr shorter.
a fully rebuilt steering setup feels pretty good as mine is all new (i have a video on that)
There are also aftermarket steering boxes that are lighter and have closer ratios if that's what you want.
and a wonder-bar ($60) solves any frame cracking issues caused by spirited driving.
i wish you were near to me so you could do this stunning welding on my sfc's.i have the same umi connectors .
i would gladly cnc machine some parts in trade,it would be tough because im in Canada(southern ontario to be exact)
love the channel and the car,i look forward to seeing more of it.
Owning a 91 305 auto convertible - installing all Hochkis front and rear, is there a need to add connectors?
Regardless of suspension, you 100% need subframe connectors.
even a stock 3rd gen needs SFC regardless of power.
also, pretty sure Hotchkis has subframe connectors.
Thanks for reply, was thinking the convertible had reinforcement.
some convertibles had SFC stock, but they suck.
if you have a Vert, i'd go with Inner and outer SFC like i installed in this video.
your ride will feel like a totally different car afterwards.
Thanks for this Video! I really appreciate your work. Im thinking myself to do the same but because of the Government restrictions it needed to be removable. Do you think it could be done with screws and nuts?
you can bolt them in, but it's not nearly as effective.
but local laws are hard to get around.
Hi. What locality and laws regarding welding SF Connectors are you speaking about?
Huh?
Good video. Do these hang down? Are they visible from the side?
the UMI outer are only visible if you don't have the RS ground effects body kit.
Probably going to go this same route on my 91. Too bad the prices have gotten insane on these.
they were about $180 at one time. now 2x that.
So you need both out we and inner sfc? Or can you just have one? I have an outer set that I'm going to be I stalling soon.
bare minimum= 1 set.
good= 2 sets
Ideal= 2 sets of SFC and a full roll cage.
Are this tubes 2" x 3"?
no idea.
Great vid 3rd Gen Guy ,,You think a need them for a hardtop 3rd gen ?
SFC are a MUST for any 3rd gen. (single set)
the Hard tops are better, but not nearly stiff enough.
@@3rdGenGuy Thank you for the reply will install on my hardtop then
@@3rdGenGuy Thanks again for the reply BTW do I need the 2 sets of frame connectors or just one for my hartop ,If one ,,Which one should I use ?
Which is better round or square subframe connecters
from an engineering standpoint? Round is better for torsional stress. but you won't be able to tell the difference between round and square.
I did the UMIs today. Why add the inner alstons?
Added stiffness.
i autocross this car so everything helps
ive talked to guys on 3rdgen.org and they did the inners and outers separately and noticed a good difference between having just 1 SFC and the pair.
that and i have a 600hp 6.2L LSA being built for this car.
Do these outer UMI sfc’s Go from frame to frame? Or frame to the floor panel?
Frame to frame
they are directly welded to the Front and rear SUbframes.
Awesome thanks
I want to install subframe connectors on my 83 Pontiac Trans Am. How long and how much do u think a garage would charge me for a job like this?
if you get a set of Outer SFC and Bolted them in yourself, a shop could weld it EASY.
like less than 30min.
They'd probably charge you an hour's labor. so $100 or so depending.
@@3rdGenGuy Thanks dude. I can't do it myself , I have a stress disorder that kinda holds me back. But I did have a new motor put in and I want to get them in there before I run it. I'm worrying about this new motor twisting her body up a bit. Nice videos, I love these cars.
The garage that did it for me charged $280 just for the outers.
Anyone have this set up on a lowered suspension? If so how low ? And is it bad? Scrapes? How low can ya go with this set up ?
So the UMI outers will NEVER scrape no matter how low your car is.
The inner SFC scrape with 3in+ lowering springs.
BUT, what would you like to scrape?
2in steel tubes that are $200 & replaceable. OR your transmission oil pan or exhaust?
@@3rdGenGuy Good to know thank you! Long time owner of several 3rd gen Camaros and have over 10 years of experience with these cars... So I am very familiar with these cars... I've done tons of work on them but strangely enough never installed subframe connectors😮 CRAZY stupid insane I know.. Always known the value of the SFC especially on the 3rd gen just haven't got to it yet...😒 The outers they an eyesore form the side view of the car? I really like the original look of these cars ... Id like to keep the original look. Are they an "Eyesore" ?
@@Toast355 you cant see them and they dont interfere with anything(if you install them right)
Did you remove any interior prior to welding?
No, i did not remove any interior.
if ur careful about managing how hot ur weld it, it's not a problem.
the welds are mostly connecting the SUB frames. ( the 3x3 boxes)
u would have to have a stupidly HOT weld to burn ur interior.
BUT some people have burned their interior by accident.
that's why i recommend a fire extinguisher for "OH SHIT!" moments.
May i ask how much did you pay to use the LIFT?
it was $20 an hour. think it took 4 hours to compete. if went with just the UMI outer SFC, it would have been done in 1 hour.
@@3rdGenGuy Thanks
Hello, I have a 1986 IROC, but no way to weld in my own sub-frame connectors, but I did notice that JEG's has a bolt on set. I have read that the bolt on type is not as good as weld on, but they are cheap, and would be much cheaper than taking my Camaro into a shop to have them do the welds. Would you think that the bolt on connectors would achieve the same results as the weld on?
so the Outer UMI SFC (both bolt on and weld) are super easy to install. i spent maybe 30min TIG welding them
any muffler shop can do it for around $120
the bolt on ones work, but not nearly as well as weld on ones
what you can do is, buy the bolt on ones, THEN get some cash ready and have them welded on.
Do these outer UMI sfc’s Go from frame to frame? Or frame to the floor panel?
answered above
I've got three questions.
1) Do either SFCs inner or outer decrease ground clearance?
2) What was the total time for install?
3) I have a Lincoln flux core mig welder. I'm relatively new to welding. Do you have any idea what settings would work best?
1. the inner connectors sacrifice about 1in of ground clearance. outers don't take up any room BUT those bars acually protect everything else. want to scrape an oil pan, or some 2in round tubing SFC?
2. not that long. the outer ones took like 1 hour tops (super fast). inners took 2 hrs as they needed a lot more fit up.
3. I only deal with TIG machines, i don't anything about Flux or mig ex.
i can tell you the car's frame is about 0.150in thick or so. not hard to blow holes in it by accident.
3rd Gen Guy - I only ask about ground clearance because I'm about to pick up a convertible as a daily driver. An inch of lost clearance isn't too bad, I had a 92 back in '99 and def bottomed out entering some normal parking lots and driveways. I know the rigidity will help the ride and squeaking. Just weighing the loss of some accessibility as a daily driver for the better driving experience.
I've been playing with a bunch of little welding projects with pretty thin sheet metal and haven't burned an holes. Just have to be conscious not to over heat anything and cause deformations.
Thanks so much for your input and great video!
Upon doing some more research it seems like the outer umi SFC don't work on convertibles due to a piece of sheet metal that Alston actually welded in for the factory. Is this correct? Can I only use the Alston inner SFC?
You selling that thing ? I’m in PA
That's my High school car, defiantly not gonna sell it. Ur in luck though, 3rd gens are still cheap. a clean z28/IROC is still under $5K or so.
Id get rid of that converter
been gone for years.
T56-mag life
Wtf is a catalytic converter?
A catalytic converter is an exhaust emission control device that converts toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine into less-toxic pollutants by catalyzing a redox reaction
What country do you call home?
Texas
@@3rdGenGuy I know cut em off every car I own 😂
I have a question for god...........WHYYYYYYYY!!!!!😢
why improve your car with basic SFC?
because it makes the car way nicer to drive for everything. from around town to racing.
If your not willing to do it on your back in the garage. Your not a real car guy.
Work Smarter not harder Jon.
As someone who works on F35 parts exceeding $1,000,000 a pop; i will always take the safest method first.
Whoa!
