How to Eat Dragon Fruit

- How do you eat dragon fruit? It's easy. You slice it in half and eat it with a spoon, or simply peel off the skin and slice it into bite-size pieces. The skin is not edible. The inner dragon fruit is similar in texture to a kiwi fruit. The fruit is filled with small seeds that are edible, they add a little texture, but for the most part they are unnoticeable. Dragon fruit is found readily in Asian food markets. The color of the fruit varies from reddish to yellow. Most dragon fruit sold in Asian Markets are reddish skinned with white flesh. As the fruit ripens the "scales" will wilt and begin to brown. The fruit will sweeten as it ripens. Dragon fruit grows in tropical climates on cactus plants. Red dragon fruit with white flesh is the most popular and primarily comes from Asia. Dragon fruit from Mexico and Central America will have reddish flesh inside. Dragon fruit is packed with nutrition and easy to eat, but I've found it to be a little pricey in the USA. How much is dragon fruit in your area?

I just got one at Walmart for 6.99$
My grandma said today “when are you going to eat your monster fruit?” 😂🐉
I got it for $4 at publix
I get mine $5 at HEB but I still don't buy it because it's so expensive
got it for 2$ lol
@@pravashrestha9641 I went to a flee market and got two of them for 4 bucks. Definitely worth it
@Red Man I don't even know man but to me it just tasted like water
In Mexico, was free.... fell off the damn cactus and the neighbor gave us a bunch
They call them pitayas and they are native from Mexico and central.. The spaniards sold them to Asian and many other mexican native fruits, vegetables and spices.
@@ccchk1 so these are a form of pitayas?? Bc I thought they tasted like them a lot.
ooof its so expensive in my country it 20 liras which is like 20 dolars

I don't understand a word but I feel you tho!😂🤣
“You could let it dry, use it as a bookmark” 🤣
Just tried first Dragon Fruit. It was the red inside variety. A mate from work grows them in his yard and gave me one to try. Delicious 😋
Red Dragon Fruit 2 pounds for $7.99 and yellow dragon fruit 1.5 pounds for $5.99. Both products of Ecuador found in Chicago suburban Costco.
What area are you from...what kind of climate? 😊
Before I saw his face I was picturing a much younger guy.
I know....that's how I feel most mornings when I look in the mirror
Me too.
I honestly was thinking 20-30 year old guy lol
alex mattyspac hahaha me too
had the same thing hahahahahah
Glad you clarified the seeds are edible. It would have been a real chore to pick everyone out haha
😂True
How someone can eat removing seeds ?

I had no idea this fruit existed outside of games til tonight
Love the chill banter and great instructional info thanks 👏🏾
Thanks for the help. I just had my first Dragon Fruit in my life. I saw it in my local supermarket in Wales, UK the other day and wanted to try it finally. It was £2 so I think it was worth it! Mine was pink/purple inside just like a beetroot, and stsined my fingers too 😅
This dood:
"I feckin hate kiwi!!!"
The kiwi:
"Dude that was like 50 years ago, let it go"
He doesn’t look 50 years or higher old I’ve seen a 90 year old he looks nothing like him
I much prefer kiwi to the rather bland and tasteless dragonfruit
@@shanemurphy9024 would you really eat a sour overpriced ball of green over a culturally important fruit?
@@fumiko_is_typing... Thanks for presuming your cultural value is higher than mine. I was attesting to taste if your were paying attention
@@shanemurphy9024 I never said anything about culture, just the fruit is culturally important, if you were paying attention
I live in the Philippines, just bought a dragon fruit for $1.25 a pound. I hear that the hotter the season, the sweeter the fruit. For those saying that your money is wasted and they are tasteless, I recommend just tasting these fruits the next time you go on vacation at a hot, tropical country!
(Blueberries here on the other hand, go for around $25 a pound huhu)
Philippines is on my bucket list of places to experience.
whoa! $25/lb?! That's wild I thought $5/basket was a lot here lol
No way! I love blueberries 🫐
25 a pound oh my god i thought 6 a pound was absurd
25 a pound???insane
Now I'm not afraid to buy and try. Thank you, Chef!
I got one at Waitrose for £3.50 a pound. Its the red variety, sourced from Vietnam. Thanks to this really relaxing explanation , I would feel confident taking it apart 😄😊

£1.00 at my local Barnet, Herts market! 😂…going to try it tomorrow
WOW it's bargain! @@rogerrandall6124
My favorite fruit. It's like a cake in a way. It sort of feels like you're taking bites of pastry. Perfectly sweetened, juicy with a bit of creamy sensation. Love everything about this fruit.
even the price?
The price in Fiji is around $20.00 a KG 😅
I just tried one and nearly barfed. It was not sweet at all and I paid $10 for it 😭
@@monicapyle Aye Monica, I feel the same way 😂, but I’m going to eat it because I paid a little over $5
@@btruthful163 I let mine sit in the fridge a few more days and then forced myself to eat it. After letting it sit, it got slightly sweeter but still not good enough that I'd ever purposely eat one again lol
I found them for 50 yen (about .42 cent) each in the grocery store in Japan today. They are very good size also. I brought them without hesitation for that price even not knowing how to eat one. Your video definitely came in handy. Thanks!
On the other hand, we've heard that watermelons are $50 in Japan. So, definitely go for the bargain fruits. They're usually local + in season = super sweet and yummy.
@@chelseamaya7828 yes, you have heard correct. Lol. Watermelons are alot of times around $50 in japan and they are about half the size of in other countries
@@TikkoRocksDaMic I want to sell watermelons in japan then
You are very funny. My kind of humor for sure. And who is laughing and commenting in the back ground adds the best touch. 😊
Mine costed five and some change today but it was on the smaller side. I was feeling adventurous when I bought it but got timid about it, greatful to watch you eat it for me lol now I feel like it's pretty straight forward and I'll go try it myself.
seriously who disliked this video...the guy is only showing how to eat fruit -__-
Im glad I watched. I just brought one home and this will be my first time trying it. I hope its sweet enough

Your profile pic is terrifying...
Stracitella yea- Pretty sure I spelled that wrong
Yes, dragon ice-cream.
I love this guy! Shoe, bookmark, and it just got more 'entertaining!' What a cool surprise. I am now looking forward to trying the different versions (i.e., Mexican, etc.) Very informative, especially about softening(sweetness), which he demonstrated by his disappointment, might not always be so. Thanks guy, great job/video/personality! Even liked the female voice input/comments/contribution!😅
Just tried this for the first time today! Delicious! I love in Kentucky and this summer is the first I've I've seen it in grocery stores in my city
I just bough it for $7 -Arizona, one lady in the store asks me what is that?! Is it a pet?🤣
I've lived in AZ for 20yr and totally believe you. I would have said it's a Pokemon. People are that stupid here. XD
Lollll
$ 7 each one!!!!!!!
Pet?? 😂😂😂😂
Im in PHX and just bought dragonfruit for the 1st time EVER and me and my older bro were joking talking about how it's going to make pokemon evolve and shit. Lol
Bought this fruit out of curiosity. Your video helped big time. As in I didn't know how to test for ripeness. I liked the fruit. Probably wouldn't go out of the way to buy it , but glad I tried it. Thank you for the video
we just bought a dragon fruit and had no idea how to cut it!!! thank you for this great video!!
Hello chef buck .new subscribers from Philippines. I am curious of this fruit this week planning to buy and dont know how to prepare... so now i know how to prepare.
Me and my friends watched this video during a media seminar at university, and we then (by chance!) found one in the shop and tried it, it’s changed our lives and we wanted to thank you for this gift
Cost me 2$ at Walmart in Missouri USA... it was 4.99 but cashier couldn’t find the item in system so she just put 2$ lol

I just got 6 of them... 3 red and 3 yellow -- 3 for 99 cents at the regular grocery store in Ontario, Canada. They usually cost more, and I've never tried one before, so I figured with a price like that, now was the time. :) Thanks for your video, I had no idea how to eat them!
Thank you for this. I've never eaten it, but wanted to try it anyway. So I bought some today even though I have zero idea how to prepare it, its a little less than $2 for 3 pieces here in the Philippines. I hope its good, i hope I'll like it. Appreciate the video, truly informative.

Mine are free, growing in back yard in Hawaii
Funny thing is dragonfruit is from the genus Hylocereus. Being a true cactus, Hylocereus originated in the Americas it is just not certain where in the Americas. And now we are charged a "premium" for the fruit simply because it generates images of exotic and tropical areas. But alas, you are not only in Hawaii but have access to dragonfruit! :-P
Jack Anderson i need to try it im from morroco they dont sell it here
Lucky you😄
Jack Anderson and here I am in the middle of North America, growing grass...
U bought the plant and raised it?
I am in Ecuador where they are just starting to grow these commercially. One of these at the market is less than $1. So many pitahaya smoothies!
I was given one from the food bank . Thank u for explaining what it is .
I only paid for dragon fruit once...it was $1.50 and a really good size. Large mango size. I’ve always thought that they are fairly bland but very refreshing. Since they’re full of antioxidants, I still eat them but I like a bit of lemon juice squeezed over it.
You, Sir, are extremely entertaining. All while being informative. Thank you! 👏🏼
We live in Maine. My wife and I just purchased our first dragon fruit two hours ago! Haven’t cut it yet but we’re excited!!! $5.98

When I first bought one in India for 100rs, I expected super sweet taste but actually It Is one of a kind tasting just like water, yeah! I mean it is 95% tasteless but you feel the tiny black seeds crunchy and the smell of the skin: I loved it.
I like the juice its soo tasty when u add with some milk and sugar and one fruit cost is like 120rs in South India
Can't wait to try one. Saw them at Publix. 😊

Yeah but...you have an unemployment/underemployment rate of almost 30%. Extreme poverty, ostensibly free education yet 1 out of 3 girls never get past a 6th grade education because there are hidden costs and so poor families send the boys. I visited a major Metropolitan area and on the way to the market we stepped over many ... far too many homeless children in cruel conditions that made me truly mad. I spent a lot of time in Colombia (born there) and it reminded me a lot of certain parts of it. A few people with lots of wealth and a few more business class / professional class, and scores of poor who have no real prospects. Sounds like you're one of the lucky ones and sorry for any offense, I just can't get the image of those kids outta my head. It's not just the Philippines, it's most places...sad.
Says the skeptic. We should team up to obliterate unfounded happy shiny feelings wherever they may hide!
@@joshuashrode2084 I'm not fun at parties but I did like your point here
Min Val I paid $12 for one one time because I was craving it so badly when I was pregnant but it was ripe and sweet. Very worth it 😂 at the time
It's just some places have unique foods that other places don't. Be thankful with what climate and foodstuffs you have.
I just wanna know how you make a shoe out of the cover now
Tie knots in the ends of a few lengths of twine. Thread the twine through a tapestry needle. Push the needle through the rind near the edge and pull until the knot stops it. You'll want four to six of these around the rind. Tie it to your foot like a sandal. Voila. Shoe.
Maybe he can send you the rinds and you can experiment maje a video
vazzu 😂😂😂
yes 😂
My sister brought one from the .99 cent store for $1.99 each !!! I was some what bitter but okay 🤷♀️!!! I liked the texture with the seeds as well !!!

You can grow it in Phoenix, Arizona and they bloom in the winter here.
Why in the heck are they packaged in styrofoam and plastic wrap , ridiculous !
Because they come to life in the dark 😂😂
Because they are shipped halfway around the globe.
That's that premium plastic wrap... It too came from a dragon

I was lucky someone gave me 3 ...the ones I was given are dark purple like the outside they are delicately sweet ... I liked it a lot the color was beautiful but at price you said would be out of my budget.
I love how you put smoothies as a way to get "lazy jaw" syndrome
I personally like it in smoothies it's good you just let it get really ripe I mean really ripe
