Nissan Navara 2021 review: Pro-4X off-road towing test in outback Australia

- The Nissan Navara 2021 range saw the introduction of a new nameplate - the PRO-4X. The Navara PRO-4X model replaces the old N-Trek version, and it looks different to the other models in the pickup range.
There are blacked-out exterior accents for a tough guy look, while 17-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber are fitted for off-road adventures.
We took full advantage of that recently, when Adventure Editor Marcus Craft hit the blacktop to the red dirt, taking on 2000km of towing with an Opus Campers camper trailer in tow.
Check out his thoughts on the new Navara as a towing vehicle, but this is much more than just a towing review - there's some off road review included, too!

Absolutely love my 2021 navara. Without a doubt the BEST duel cab ute ive ever owned. 10/10 Nissan you nailed this one.👍
Easy pleased
When i see Craft i click like! Knowing it's gonna be a good one 👍😊
great reviews mate. stay true!
my friend, you are the best 4x4 car analyst. although I live in Europe, when I'm interested in a well-made review, I follow your channel.
Nice filming, top notch review.
Well that the best bit of ball rubbing i have had for a long time (just watched 4x4 ball rub)
My fav 😍
Looks good 👍🏻
Reckon they’ll bring out the warrior version?
Such a great looking Double Cab, maybe even one of the best looking, but you are quickly let down when you step inside the vehicle which looks more than dated. Seems like Nissan focused on the exterior and had no budget available to improve the interior experience.
It does look good but, yep, Navaras do feel a little older inside. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty
Very true, the only thing that looks better is the steering wheel
Thst s the readon i dont want Navara ... old lame inside
Not only the interior, it is underpowered for real towing ,more than 1.5t
I love these type of comments.
I think we all can agree ALL utes should have at least 500kw and 3000nm because we love to tow our 3.5T trailers @ 200kmh going up a 40 degree incline with 2000kg in the load bin.
The extra power comes in handy when you need to overtake in those conditions!
I really really missed Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Australia from Las Vegas
Good review production all round. I love that lazy lizard cameo. What is is that? Here in South Africa they introduced the model with a twin turbo 2.5d but the same output as the 2.3d, which I love. I reckon they missed a good opportunity to at least eat into the popular Wildtrak market with bit more grunt.
The 2.5 in South Africa is a single turbo. The outgoing model was a 2.3 twin turbo.
The mentioned "trailer sway control" is this in conjunction with a brake controller, and is a brake controller included?
TSC is part of the vehicle's suite of driver-assist tech. An electric brake controller will have to be fitted or you can use a portable version. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty
Sweet truck
Like watching an ad before watching an ad for a truck
"Good easy on the swear words." LOL
Hey crafty i take pleasure in watching your vidwos, now a question, would these new navaras with the 2.3 litre diesel engine be able tow tow a 3 ton caravan?
They tow 3.5 towns, braked
Such a lazy answer. None of these dual cab Utes can "practically" tow 3.5t. Sure in theory, but do the num ers and you'll quickly realise if you want to tow 3.5t you may want to take a dump before you head off to make sure you're legal:😂
I have the new ST-X and love it. Tows my 2.5T boat with ease. Biggest issue is the built in Nav not being able to find street numbers. Common problem apparently. Fortunately has Apple Car Play ;).
No problems with 2.5T? what about up hills?
@@davidriquelme1190 It will always work a bit harder going up steep hills but no problems so far. Have towed the boat at least 2500 k's since owning it, and is smooth rolling.
@@CL-mc8xj Is it still going well?
Yep hasn’t missed a beat
Nice! But no black head lining.
For a day to day mostly and a few camping trips with some off road adventures with a young family, (not as often as I would like, every couple of months or so). Would you recommend DMax XT or Navara Pro-4x? Was leaning towards the DMax but have been hearing the Navara is more comfortable especially with the family? Any thoughts are appreciated.
You found the answer mate ? Same question here
If this had the Merc V6 in it they would smoke the opposition,
It's a shame they couldn't do a reciprocal deal when they rebadged the Nissan as a Merc, to get their V6,
Would be a weapon
Exactly nissan should react to consumer interests.
Excuse me Mazda, but my BT50 uses more fuel than that when not towing..lol Thanks for the video.
What's with the Sydney promo at the beginning of the Aussie Nissan car review?
I know it’s not your area of expertise but any thoughts on that camper? Been thinking about it but all the reviews seem too positive (surely it can’t be that good). Thanks!
Sorry, mate, we swagged it. Didn't even use the Opus air camper-trailer! It was our towed load on this trip. However, plenty of people have said the Opus campers are pretty good. Good luck, mate! Thanks for watching. - Crafty
Why did Nissan do centre power tray, and cup holder delete?
That was a deal breaker and I waited for this release....
Yeah mate, I have the 2018 model & when you drive long distance regularly they're really good features, especially when they have them in other markets, so the original dash is still available but some wally decided to change it for Australian market, go figure.
The NEW Isuzu still has the cup holders, I'm about the start the process of choosing a new ute for delivery in November,
Thanks heaps Crafty! Great review.
@@bretthampson8991 Just purchased the Stelth Grey PRO4X I really wanted the X-Terrain from Isuzu but the wait was 7months.
Test drove the PRO4X and loved the car and can not wait to take delivery.
I also added a Snorkel, Full hooped winch compatible bull bar, tinted windows & (3.5t Tow Bar is included)
Purchas price is $66,343.40 from Horsham Nissan
Машина просто супер.
Still got the lemon 114x6 bolt pattern...... sorry Nissan, thats a fail from me. Might as well have the better 150x5 pattern. So did you test it up a real hill or mountain pass like we have here in NZ?
So Nissan shouldn't listen to premcar, just you! 🤦🙄
I'm in the process of researching the ute market with the DMAX at the top atm. You didn't mention suspension or whether it has a rear diff lock. Has the suspension been upgraded?
Thanks
Mick
@1.53 shows diff lock
Does it have updated suspension? Or the standard across the range
@@michaelnugara1 standard. D-max still way to go
Standard Navara suspension, mate. Yep, it has a rear diff lock. Thanks for watching. Good luck ute-hunting, mate. - Crafty
drive the Dmax and then drive this. You’ll buy the Nissan
I’m as wide as a doorway and 6ft I dont fit In the drivers side comfortably seat base is very thin. And no one would be able to sit behind me shoulders hang outside the door lol
What is the cost of shipping this to Uganda in Africa?
Get the SA one it is Africanised w a 2.5 diesel
@@willemgouws4928 yeah I was about to suggest the same thing
where is this vehicle manufactured?
Spain, according to Nissan dealers.
Thailand
Top of the line but no heated seats or sunroof... HOW?
Yep, for a top-spec variant it's missing a few things and is really an exercise in styling (like a lot of utes in that bit of the market), but I guess Nissan has some plans. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, mate. - Crafty
Don’t need heated seats in australia mate, sunroofs are just more things to go wrong electrical wise
Nothings changed to the interior bummer, maps r outdated
some confusion here and other places are now saying this engine has "sequential" turbo chargers in the bi-turbo format (similar to the 2.0L in-line 4cyl in Ranger where its a smaller faster spinning turbo then switching to a larger VGT type up high), have Nissan changed it from the previous "twin turbo (re: same sized turbos) designs for the generation Navara? Would like to know if that is the case or not.
As for the Navara itself, it's now in it's "5th" version of the original NP300 and Nissan still can't get the rear suspension right even with the previous upgrade (which is now 2 years ago) switch to dual rate springs, the problem is the basic "panhard rod" 5 link design which can never be balanced the right way to be either too soft (sag but great ride) or too stiff (no sag but bumpy ride) because of the lateral movement of the panhard rod which offers no support of the differential, the interior is a shambles also which is a shame however the rest of the Navara itself for the most part is ok, from my viewpoint the Triton is ahead of the Navara even with this upgrade t the Navara in terms of styling.
Looking forward to the future Navara/Triton twins with Mitsubishi taking the lead development work which should improve the Navara rear suspension issues by going back to good ol leaf springs and adding Super Select II AWD/4x4 High/4x4 Low options for the Navara.
Twin turbo, mate. That suspension set-up went well but I was carrying a load onboard and towing that camper the whole time. You make a stack of good points, including about Super Select II. Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty
Thanks for clearing that up that the engine has the same twin turbo (both turbo's are same size working at the same time) as other reviews are saying different size turbo working at different engine rev bands, so basically it's the same engine as it started out with with the NP300.
Yeah I think Mitsubishi will lift the Navara right up just like how Ranger will make the Amarok so much better then it is right now as a solo platform.
Just on Android Auto, I had issues with Sync 3 when using Android 9 and 10 but since Android 11 those issues have gone away due to the way the MTP protocol has changed to allow Android Auto without having to allow it permission to allow file and service system access, using Android 09 based mobile and the issue shows up, my advice is if have ability to do so use Android Developer settings to lock the device into MTP / Android Auto always on mode and that will clear up issue when connecting your device to a multi media device as permissions are set to open.
Better than Toyota Hilux and Mitsubishi Triton 🙂🙂
Why tow a 1.5 t trailer as a test , maybe a 2.8 t van would give us a idea of a decent tow , or is It that the Nissan would struggle.
Given that they are well known as underpowered, you wasted all of our time with the test
Buy a Nissan & u go missin.... break down & get stranded to be precise!😂
Beg to differ... gram 🤣🤣
@@williekeyl850 I think you injected a gram little willie
Was this literally a paid-for-by-Nissan infomercial?????
The list of flaws in the current Navara are no mystery. I'm sure the ute performed well enough, but there wasn't a single negative observation from our "expert"?
Other reviews & tests have been pretty critical of this platform....
(Conflict of interest is real?)
These are definitely biased paid adverts. Nissan does not allow a review they cannot oversee, look at how long they took to allow the review and other 4wd shows who are more brutally honest not allowed a test car. Everyone should take their own independent approach with these utes. This review stunk of paid advertising.
@@ilikethisnamedoyou I hate to burst your bubble, mate, but this was not "paid advertising". I've never been involved in anything of the sort. If you don't agree with the content of a review, that's fine, but don't fall back on lazy accusations and wild conjecture as the basis of your argument. I don't agree with you, and I know that what you claim is untrue, but I still appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. - Crafty
@Simon Barnett Firstly, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, mate. I appreciate it. Secondly, avoid using lazy "paid-for" accusations and instead pay a bit more attention. You really think Nissan would pay me to advertise their utes? With that towed load this Navara did well on this test and on those road and track surfaces. I was impressed with how it went on corrugated sections of dirt track. Read the full yarn at carsguide.com.au for more details. Thanks again. - Crafty
@@carsguide hey crafty his username is dieselsnifer, what do you expect, great review guys,,,
@@carsguide Thanks Crafty. I'm no lazier than anyone else (but I guess sitting on my butt watching YT is pretty lazy).
But ..."pay more attention..."? Seriously?
Get stuffed, I'm not copping that - I'm currently in the market for a new d/c 4wd ute. It will be a big spend for me & I take these reviews very, very seriously. I watch them with forensic attention to detail because I (foolishly) trust they are made with absolute independence.
You can't tell me there wasn't a single thing you thought could have been designed or built better? Forget dopey brand allegiances - I don't have any. I just know every vehicle has something that wasn't done as well as expected.
Nissan Australia threw a dummy spit when another, more hardcore, channel panned their Navara. They had a sook about it & refused to give them another test vehicle 12 months later. But they can't hide on the internet.
Crafty if your so defensive about accusations of biased or rose-tinted reporting, why don't you prove it beyond doubt? Post a video outlining the advertising contracts (and the fine print) currently in place between Nissan Australia & CG ??
And include any briefings, conditions or "guidances" given to CG when that Navara was sent to you for the tow story.
And while your at it, outline any & all perks, kick-backs, junkets, lunches, dinners, xmas parties, trips & expenses paid for by Nissan in the last....say...5 years?
Ford Fuckin Ranger all day over other sh*ts , Being 11 years it still the Best .
Would rethink that mate 💀
nissan have never been known for their interiors...junk
This format is old and tired.
Give me the real meat AND potatoes.
Don't tell me all the things I can quickly find from the manufacturer's website, tell me the good and bad compared to something else.
Telling me the seats are wonderful and lovely, whist going over rutted terrain and sounding like you're talking through fan blades, just leaves me to believe you can't say anything bad or the man behind the camera will take the keys and leave you stranded.
Evolve or die, pointless media format.
Sorry, you didn't enjoy the vid, mate. Didn't you even enjoy the scenery and animals? The camera-work was great, you have to acknowledge that. As for the ute, the suspension did pretty well through corrugated sections and those seats were comfortable over long distances - I don't remember saying the seats were "wonderful and lovely". Thanks for watching and commenting. - Crafty
