These were the absolute cream of the crop as far as session musicians. At one point it was estimated that 50% of the entire worlds population listened to music with members of this band.
The woman dancing in the video is Cynthia Rhodes. She was married to Richard Marx and played the main female dance instructor, Penny Johnson, in Dirty Dancing.
For me all about Jeff Porcaro playing that classic shuffle on the drums. It’s a master class on how it’s done. Mr Porcaro was such a great drummer and a big drumming influence on me as a young knucklehead back in the day
In a Songfacts interview with David Paich, he explained: "'Rosanna' was about a high school love, one of my first loves, but I just tagged another Rosanna's (Rosanna Arquette) name on there because she was going at the time with Steve Porcaro, my best friend. He had just met her and was looking to title a song with her name, and it just fit perfectly for that song right there.
Thanks for the truth awesome down here iñ Australia we were told he and Rosanna were in a relationship and were always on the coke. Now we really know. Love your work
The Rosanna Shuffle, developed by the Toto's drummer Jeff Porcaro, is one of best-known, well-loved drum beats of modern times. All you have to say is, "Rosanna Shuffle," and every drummer will smile 🙂
Heavily influenced by Bernard Purdie, drummer for the greats like Aretha Franklin and Steely Dan, and the G.O.A.T JOHN BONHAM ... combined with a Bo Didley style bass drum pattern
It's the Purdie Shuffle first played by legendary drummer Bernard Purdie on Steely Dan's Haitian Divorce. Both Jeff Jeff Pocaro & John Bonham on " Fool in the Rain" both took inspiration from Purdie. It's a little disrespectful to not call if the Purdie Shuffle
I wouldn't say it is disrespectful at all to call it The Rosanna Shuffle. It's technically Jeff Porcaro's unique combination of The Half Time Shuffle (Purdie's Shuffle), John Bonham's Fool In The Rain Shuffle beat and The Bo Diddley Beat. If Porcaro was actually doing the straight Purdie's Shuffle then it would be disrespectful to call it The Rosanna Shuffle but, like most music, it is a unique variation or interpretation applied to the players own style.
You really understand what talent exists when they take the time to layer all of those instruments along with the outstanding vocals to create something unique. You want to listen to it over and over and each time you do, you find a nugget in the layers.
I saw this drop but told myself I'd have to wait and watch it after I finished a scheduled grocery pick up. I jumped in the car and "Rosanna" started playing on the radio. I hadn't heard it in quite a while and smiled at the coincidence. I'm enjoying your reactions.
Rosanna doesn’t even have to meet him halfway, he’ll meet her all the way - she’s the fantasy. In appreciation, they made a song to watch her dance to.
The song was supposed to end on "Rosanna oh yeah".. but Jeff continued on drums and Steven went in to an improv guitar solo .. after it they said "did anyone record that?" and kept it on record
The unmistakable 1/2 time "Rosanna Shuffle" on drums. RIP Jeff Porcaro. What an absolute legend! The whole band can almost do nothing wrong. Check out "99" as well
Toto is a deep dive so worth taking...they have some tunes that will bring tears, they were and are always coming up with new ideas and so very good in concert live! Great react!!! More Toto!
The sheer talent of all of the members of Toto was amazing. Almost all of them were top-notch high in demand studio musicians in LA at the time. For example, the drummer Jeff Porcaro as well as being one of the most recorded drummers of that era with multiple artists he also play with Steely Dan for years and the lead guitarist Steve Lukather is one the most recorded studio guitarists ever with having played on over 3,000 recordings over the years. Just incredible.
Love Toto! They opened for Starship Pensacola Beach FL outside free concert. Camped out overnight, spent the day at the beach until concert at 4pm ♥️. Great Memory.
Toto did a LOT of great music. I personally think this is their best effort. Jeff Porcaro is amazing. He is one of the most prolific studio percussionists ever. The drum line in this song boggles my mind. Great reaction, as always!
The Rosanna in this song is inspired by the actress Rosanna Arquette who was actually dating the keyboardist for Toto at the time, Steve Porcaro. She looked a lot like Cynthia Rhodes, who is the girl dancing in this video. Both Cynthia Rhodes and Rosanna Arquette would become much more famous in the mid 80s for other movie roles. Cynthia Rhodes played Patrick Swayze's character's original partner in the movie 'Dirty Dancing' (1987) and Rosanna Arquette played along with Madonna in the movie "Desperately Seeking Susan" (1985). From what I read, Rosanna Arquette was very high maintenance which is pretty much reiterated in the line of the song, "Rosanna, Rosanna I didn't know you were looking for more than I could ever be". She later dated Peter Gabriel and is believed to have inspired his song "In Your Eyes". The video is inspired from not only Rosanna Arquette, but also the musical "West Side Story" (1961). Thus you get the gang rumble over the dancing girl at the end.
Toto founder David Paich is the son of Marty Paich, a top notch jazz arranger who arranged and orchestrated for numerous jazz and pop artists from Mel Torme to Neil Diamond. So, son David grew up around top music talent. Also, the backup musicians on this recording included "session" musicians like jazz saxophonists Tom Scott and James (Jimmy) Pankow, a founding member of the band Chicago.
Nicely done! You nailed one great point - Toto are able to deliver superb musicianship while keeping it catchy and radio-friendly at the same time. The drummer Jeff Porcaro (RIP) gave us an iconic shuffle beat that sounds simpler than it actually is. I think they are just showing off their chops a bit in the outro though, after the radio-friendly first part of the song.
Actually, they won 6 Grammy's that year, including album of the year for Toto IV and record of the year for Rosanna. Great band, and enjoyed your reaction!
Genuinely enjoying you guys. Just recently discovered you. It's been a while since I listened to music reactions almost every day. Which means I also like your content. Which is really rare for me. 👍 👍
Truly a highly underrated band. They are very dynamic and play many genres of music! Look deeper into this group. Their talent is far beyond what most of us are familiar with.
Cynthia Rhodes was the Hollywood dancer in the 80's. She was featured in Dirty Dancing, Flashdance, Stayin' Alive, and even Pee Wee's Big Adventure. She retired at around age 35 to raise her children and was married to Richard Marx for 25 years, also appearing in two of his videos.
This song and Peter Gabriel's IN YOUR EYES, were both written for the actress Rosanna Arquette. Her brother was Dewey in Scream, and her sister was NBC's star of MEDIUM.
The video reminds me a bit of West Side Story with the street gangs , always a great sound from TOTO . I miss the 80's so much where talent ruled and great bands were not fighting to be solo only artist. Great reaction love your channel . :)
Now you know why a lot of people say you can't go wrong with Toto. They have a lotta Bruce Dickerson records ( gold records ) and not even any cowbell ! Thanks you 2 for another nice reaction and the knowledge.
Steve Lukather was the original guitarist and stayed with the band during its entire history. In 2012 Ringo Starr invited him to play and tour with his All Starr Band and he has since, and they play 3 Toto songs nightly...Hold the Line, Africa and Rosanna. Steve also did some studio session work playing guitar on a couple of Boz Scaggs albums and Michael Jackson's Thriller album.
"Some session work" doesn't begin to describe his career... Luke has been one of the most sought after session guitarists since the 1970's. Every member of the band is a monster musician with years of studio session experience.
Roseanna - hands down, one of the very best songs ever recorded. I've seen live performances done later, including the "revival" tours, but this is the CLASSIC. There is so much going on musically that it's almost impossible to know where to start, or to try and get it all in. The "trivia list" for Roseanna is likewise as long as your arm - there are so many side stories and nuances wrapped up in this. Funnily enough, I did not see this video for many, many years after the song first came out. Somehow, the video fits perfectly. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. It's really difficult to play the "if I had to pick just one" game with Toto's music, but the top two, for me, were this and Africa. And I think this still really stands out as extra special. And that red dress? That's the "heart attack" dress with this lovely lady wearing it in this video. Absolutely jaw-dropping. But that isn't what made the song great - it's just another wonderful part of the story.
Rosanna and Africa are from the TOTO IV album, and there's at least 4 more tracks from it that are worth checking out, even if they are but mere "deep cuts" and not charting hits : - We Made It - Lovers In The Night - Afraid Of Love - Make Believe
It always puts a big smile on my face when younger people discover new old music and have an appreciation of the musicians talent, these are some crack musicians, I should know. Turns out, I went to high school with Toto, Paich, Porcaros, Lukather. It was quite a scene, music was everwhere. 50 years ago this month, Jeff started playing with Steely Dan and touring, lucky me, I was there! What a band. It's a great time to still be alive!
Great Band, Cynthia Rhodes, wonderful dancer, who was also one of the main characters in Dirty Dancing along side Patrick Swayze and if you look really close at around 4 minutes 26 seconds you will catch a glimpse of Patrick. 🎼❤️🇦🇺❤️🇬🇧🕺🏻💃🎸☘️
Wow, I never realized just how much of a 1950s greaser/Sha-Na-Na (maybe West Side Story?) vibe was in this song til seeing this video in its entirety. Really cool. Also kinda reminded me of the "gang fight" in Michael Jackson's Beat It video.
TOTO were so amazing, so many talented musicians in that group, they were on Fire 🔥 I also just realised Cynthia Rhodes from Dirty Dancing was in this video, wow !
So glad yall use the music videos when you can in your reactions, it's usually studio quality and it's nostalgia for alot of people when it played on MTV and Much Music in Canada back in the day, awesome reaction guys. By the way at 9:27 when both of the men in the dance off go down like they are going to kiss or something the look on Phil's face just literally killed me, I'm probably still laughing as you read this.
I remember this song most in real time when I was 10 yrs old at the skating rink, a year before I REALLY got into music. I was so spoiled in the early 80's having all these banger songs--taking for granted all those greats like this one, Centerfold & Freeze Frame by J. Geils' Band, Keep On Loving You by REO, Eye Of the Tiger by Survivor, Physical by Olivia, Don't You Want Me by Human League, I love Rock N Roll by Joan Jett, Hurt So Good by Mellencamp, Hungry Like the Wolf by Duran Duran. List goes on and on. Very lucky to grow up with so many.
Great reaction to a great song.. brought so much nostalgia from my high school time..Toto - Rosana was a banger for us for sure..and Rosana added so much spice to the official video.. May I suggest another banger that was released around the same time.. STEVIE NICKS - Stand Back official video has the same uplifting energy as this video...love your reactions and comments...
4 original members, actually - Jeff and Steve Porcaro, David Paich, and Steve Lukather. 5 if you count Greg Phillinganes - current piano player with Toto and previously with them from 2003-2008.
These guys were some of top studio musicians back then, appearing on dozens of albums, so their musical craftsmanship is simply incredible. Saw them twice in concert (Toto IV, Fahrenheit), & they're such perfectionists it was like listening to the albums. "Rosanna" has always been my favorite Toto song (sorry, Africa), and 1 of my all-time favorites - and the only song I'm aware of that has both a synth solo and piano solo! Other songs you might like: 99, I'll Supply the Love, and Won't Hold You Back.
You guys did Lido Shuffle a little while back. The drummer there was Jeff Porcaro. Jeff also was the drummer here. The Lido Shuffle was a regular "shuffle". This here is a half-time "shuffle". Known as the "Rosanna Shuffle" (or sometimes "Porcaro Shuffle"). Similar (or a combination of) to the Purdie Shuffle (Bernard Purdie) or the Bonham Beat (Jon Bonham, Led Zeppelin's "Fool In The Rain").
Toto won 7 grammys in 1983, including Album of the Year for Toto IV and Record of the Year for Rosanna.

Doesn't seem like anyone ever brings up Patrick Swayze dancing in the video. Oops. sorry one comment did. Usually it just slides by.
Really? I didn’t notice that that was her and I never saw Patrick Swayze in the video.
Nobody puts Patrick in a corner
she was also in Flashdance
@@keetahbrough oh that’s right.
They once asked Eddie Van Halen what is was like to be the greatest guitarist....his answer was "I don't know, you better ask Sreve Lukather"!!
That is paraphrasing. It was Albert Einstein who got the question. Not regarding guitar-playing though...🙂
yeah ive heard that attributed to people from guitarists to soccer players
Actually both played in Michael Jackson's Thriller album in the song Beat It.
For me all about Jeff Porcaro playing that classic shuffle on the drums. It’s a master class on how it’s done. Mr Porcaro was such a great drummer and a big drumming influence on me as a young knucklehead back in the day
The end part was an improvised jam session they decided to leave in. The level of talent these guys have is off the charts .
My favorite song by them!! 😉👍😎❤️
Absolutely! Then, on top of that, Jerry Hey wrote the horn accompaniment for it.
@@GinkoYoki234Horn section included Tom Scott Jimmy Pankow Gary Grant Jim Horn Jerry Hey ! Top notch musos!

Fun fact the members of TOTO have recorded on over 500 grammy nominated albums, as they are consided to be some of the top musicians in their field
The piano player, bass player and the awesome Jeff Porcaro are all brothers!
This is the smoothest song ever.
