    Thank you so much, Craig, for sharing your experience and knowledge. I bought Book Bolt Pro yesterday, and I was utterly lost. I use Affinity Designer for creating (drawing) puzzles and mazes. But this process is a lot of work. I stumbled upon Book Bolt, and was very sceptic at first but just bought it without thinking about "how it works"!
    Before I came across your tutorial, I was lost because the Book Bolt tutorials didn't work for me. I needed something more "all-in". I found exactly what I needed in your tutorial. When I see your tutorial, I see a "master" at work. Your way of explaining is very easy to follow for a newbie like myself.
    So thank you again for your great tutorial and truly save my day and investment. I really do hope to see more of your work!
    Kind Regards,

    I loved BookBolt, however the near 50 designs I created under the old format were completely deleted once the new format was introduced. All of the work I'd worked so hard to design had vanished. Bookbolt was not at all helpful stating that it had nothing to do with the new format, but that I must have deleted my cache, which I had not. Nothing could be restored, and Bookbolt's dismissive attitude was very disappointing. I deleted my account.

    • @CraigBabin
      @CraigBabin  Год назад +7

      It sucks that that happened, but what you have to remember is that the Book Bolt Designer is a piece of software, not an online storage site. Their saved designs section is more like the temporary cache you see when you open up Photoshop and you see the last 20 projects you worked on. Those projects don't stay in Photoshop either, they eventually get replaced by your more recent projects.
      This is the reason an Adobe subscription offers 1GB of storage space, as well as the option to save your working files to your "own" computer. That being said, that's also why Adobe has a much more expensive subscription price. If Book Bolt was to save every users data indefinitely, they would have to add in a lot more servers and raise the price of their subscription to cover that cost.
      It would be nice if Book Bolt gave you a way to save your working files to your own computer for later use, but that would probably require a lot more coding, which would end up raising the price of their service.
      If you had saved your designs in Book Bolt and every few days opened those designs and modified them in some way and then re-saved them, they probably would have stayed around longer. Put if you hadn't touched them for 30 or more days, then they just become cache that's eventually erased.
      Book Bolt is an inexpensive and minimal alternative to much pricier software subscriptions like Adobe. If you want all of the bells and whistles that come with professional software, you have to be willing to pay the higher price.

    Just a quick easy question:
    Even pages are on the left, and Odd pages are on the right, correct?
    So if I want the words on the left, and the grid for the word search on the right, I would need to have 2&3, 4&5, 6&7 correct?

    • @CraigBabin
      @CraigBabin  Год назад

      Correct. Page 1 is on the right hand side because the inside of the cover is on the left hand side. So each future page spread would be 2&3, 4&5, 6&7, etc.

    Hi Craig, your video super helpful. I am pulling my hair out here I have multiple times tried to submit my csv file and it says there are not enough words!! I have recounted manually a number of times as well as calculated on the spreadsheet, I have 600 word, I want 15 in each puzzle so that would be 40 pages plus 7 for the solutions .... I am baffled as to why it keeps saying there are not enough words. Any clue?? Appreciate your help!

    • @CraigBabin
      @CraigBabin  Год назад

      Try adding in another 30 words or so. Not all puzzles can be designed to fit just any 15 words. Remember, you're dealing with a finite amount of letters in the puzzle, so some groupings of words just may not work together. You need to give the puzzle generator a few more options just in case it can't make certain words work properly together.
      If you still can't get it to work, turn on the "use random words" option in the generator, that should solve your problem.

    • @London72

      I haven't even began my WordSearch project but i yet but I know the answer because I've read enough information overtime. No one seems to be remembering to " teach" the FACT that this tool views a "PAGE" as NOT a single side but rather a SIDE- BY-SIDE. If you imagine TEARING AWAY A PAGE are you tearing away one side of it? Think like that. No, you can't tear away part of it, you're tearing away SIDE BY SIDE content. Hence, if you have SIDE BY SIDE content of 15 words, that is the page containing 30! In summary if you have 600 words how many 30's can you have. The answer is 20. You can therefore only get 20 FULL.PAGES (aka side by side content) 600 words. You are telling the system you want 40 Pages so it is telling you that you are short on words bcuz for the system 40 PAGES is 1200 words. I really hope this helps

    • @CraigBabin
      @CraigBabin  Год назад

      @@sharondennis1914 I think you're misreading his post Sharon. He wants to use "600 words" in his book with "40 puzzles" at "15 words" per puzzle. His math is correct: 15 X 40 = 600. Secondly, if you tear away a page (delete) from the book, you're not deleting a spread, you're deleting the front side of a page. Every page has two sides to it (a front and back side) ... which is why the page count of your book must be an even number in a multiple of 4.
      So if your book has 84 pages in it and you delete 1 page side (from Book Bolt Studio) , that would leave your page count as an odd number 83. So you'd have to delete a second page side to make the count even. But, you would still have an issue, because 82 is not a multiple of 4. Printers lay out books in spreads, not pages. And each spread has 4 page sides to it. The left page of the spread has a front and back side and so does the right page of the spread. And this is why your books page count needs to be an even number that is a multiple of 4. But if you do happen to layout your book in an even number that is "not" a multiple of 4, like I do in this video (76 pages), KDP will just add 2 additional blank pages to your book when printing, to balance it out. So it's not a huge deal.
      This is a point that I make very clear in many of my other self publishing videos. The reason that I don't explain this concept in every video, is because then my videos would just become a regurgitation of the same content. These videos aren't meant to be stand alone, they're part of my "Self Publishing 101" playlist, which I put a link to at the end of every video.

    Does Bookbolt studio allow you to add extra pages to a project while your creating the pages? Does it automatically adjust the cover spine also?

    • @CraigBabin
      @CraigBabin  2 года назад +2

      No, and it's for the very reason you just mentioned. Because it's creating the cover at the same time, it needs to make all of the calculations ahead of time. But it's the same with KDP; once you've uploaded your cover, you can't change the number of pages in your interior, without redoing your cover.
      That's why you need to plan out your book ahead of time. If you're not sure how many pages your book is going to be, then create your interior first by itself (which you can do in Book Bolt). Then once you have that finalized, create your cover separately.

      The configuration should default at 17 X 17 and I don't think there's a way to change that. You can change the dimensions of the puzzle letter board by adding in wider margins in the margin setting at the top of the puzzle generator menu, but that's pretty much it.
      You're stuck with 17 X 17, unless you change the length of your words. Really long words will probably result in more columns and rows.

    Great video, but I have a question. When you create the book, you check the box to add the solutions, right? So, 16 puzzles = 16 solution pages, or a total of 32 pages. If you have 16 puzzles, you will need 16 solutions. So, you could put 4 solutions on 4 pages dedicated to the solutions. I am doing a book with 24 puzzles in it. That would mean that I would need 6 pages dedicated to solutions, if I put 4 solutions on each page. Or 4 pages if I put 6 solutions on each page. So, I planned that way when I created my project. 24 puzzles plus 6 pages for solutions would equal 30 pages. But when I tried that, I only got 6 puzzle solution pages. How do I see all the solutions so I can copy them onto the solutions pages? Hope I am not being too confusing here, but I am confused. LOL Hey, I will take help from anybody.

    • @CraigBabin

      Dale!!!! You're giving me flashbacks to grade 11 algebra and those two damn men on different trains! lol
      If you're going to have 24 puzzles, you need to create your book with 48 pages (24 puzzles and 24 solutions). Then after you've combined your solutions (by copying and pasting them) onto 6 pages (4 to a page), you delete the remaining 16 blank pages from your book. The spine on your books' cover will automatically be adjusted to account for the deleted pages.

    • @dalehan123
      @dalehan123 Год назад

      Well, when you put it like that! LOL. I guess I did take the long way around the barn, but I was trying to make sure you got the picture. Anyway, I guess you answered my question. So, if I decide to consolidate the solutions, say 4 to a page, I just go back and delete the excess pages I originally created, and then all is well in Book Bolt land! Thanks for your speedy reply.
      Here is another question. I am trying to create a multi-puzzle type book. I thought I would do 5 different types of puzzles with 5 puzzles each. To keep it simple, I will just figure that means I will need to create a book with 50 pages, a total of 25 puzzles and 25 puzzle solution pages. Correct? The first 5 puzzles are to be word search puzzles with 20 words per puzzle. I created my word list using ChatGPT. I got 20 words on 5 different subjects, so, a total of 100 words. I copy and pasted them into my spreadsheet separated by one row between each group of words.
      Next, I went to Book Bolt and set up my project. I wanted to create the interior only as I will create my cover in Canva. I set my book as a 6"x 9" paperback and used "Bleed". Next, I followed your video and set my margins to 0.25 and selected the first 5 pages in the template creator. I selected that I wanted each puzzle to have a max of 20 words. So, here's the problem. When I uploaded my csv file into Book Bolt, I expected each puzzle to have 20 words, but instead, they came out with a different number of words to search in them. The first had 20 words, but the next one had only 7 words, and on and on. Each puzzle with a different number of words. Where did I go wrong here? I mean, I have tried to do 16 words max per puzzle, 15 words max per puzzle, 10 words, each time the puzzles loaded with an uneven number of words. Can you help me figure this out? I have done several puzzle books, word search books, and never had this problem. I would do 25 puzzles with 25 words each. I would always get just that followed by 25 solution pages. But this has me stumped. Any suggestions you may have will be appreciated. Thanks

      @@dalehan123 I honestly have no idea why it would do that. The only thing that I can think of is that some of your words are over 20 characters in length, and since they're not usable, the generator is dividing up the ones that are between each puzzle. The KDP margins (the green dotted lines) are fixed and can't be changed. They are set up to KDP's specifications. You have to keep your content inside of those lines. This is why I said bring your content in without margins, that way you can just scale it to fit the KDP margins.

      @@stevesculptor1 The gutter, top, bottom and outside margins are all preset in the Book Bolt studio. They're set up to KDP's recommendations, and they can't be changed. But when you add content using the "page template" icon in the left menu, you'll be given the option to add additional space (margins) around your content. The margins that you're adding there are in addition to the KDP margins, unless you set the bleed mode to "paper" instead of "work area" in the options menu of the page template. You can only set the additional margins on content that is being uploaded from the "page template" section. Anything that you're importing from outside of Book Bolt, has to be lined up on the page itself using the preset margins provided.
      Your best option is to just use the preset margins (the little green dotted lines) that come from KDP and push your page content right up to those lines. Unless you want a full bleed, then just drag your content right off the edge of the page.

Is that still the case? The reason I ask is that I have a feeling that completing my first few books will take more than a few days. I'd like to be able to resume work on a project that I started more than a week or two in the past. Why would BB put such stressful time limits on creators anyway? The answer page format of the Bookbolt puzzle is not good at all! Needs a lot of improvement to be sellable.

    • @CraigBabin
      @CraigBabin  2 года назад

      I wouldn't go as far as to say not sellable, in simple puzzles like these, people very rarely need the solutions. Just giving them an indication of where the hidden words are in the puzzle, for most people would be enough.
      But I agree, the solution pages would be much better if the words were circled as one entire word as opposed to as individual letters.
      I've made a comment to the development team at Book Bolt about this, hopefully they'll fix this soon.

    • @CraigBabin

      If I was using Canva, I'd probably just render out as RGB as well. The only time rendering out in CMYK is advantageous to you, is when you have access to Pantone swatches. I've never used Canva before, but I highly doubt that you have access to Pantone swatches.
      KDP printers can get pretty good results with RGB, so unless you're using a software program like Adobe, I'd just stick to RGB.

      Here's a little piece of advice that may help you make your decision. There's a good chance that Book Bolt will have a Black Friday special this November. Book Bolt notifies me ahead of time to let me know if they do. I'll post in my community section to let my subscribers know the sale is coming.
      So if you're subscribed to my channel and you have the bell notification turned on for all notifications, you'll get the notification that I've posted something in my community section. Then, if you use my affiliate link in the description section of this video, you'll save 20%. And if the sale is the same as last year, you'll also get an additional 40% off. Which will give you 60% off of a 1 year subscription.
      That's how it worked last year anyway.

    Craig, FYI, there might be a bug with the puzzle generator. When I am attempting to use the Word Search generator, even though my CSV file is using all capital letters, the word list clues are all being converted to lower case. I have sent a ticket over to them, and am awaiting for their reply, but if you have any suggestions, or can try this out form your end I would like to hear about it also.

    • @CraigBabin

      Once you've loaded your puzzle on to your page, select it, right lick on it and choose edit contents. Then group select all of the words in lower case, then go to up to the text tool menu, above your art board and use the "Capitalize Letters" tool to change all of the letters to upper case. It's the icon with the small "a" that has an arrow pointing to a capital "A".

    Thanks for the video. I tried to make a book with word search puzzles in Bookbolt. It turned out that depending on the length of the words this service decides the size of the grid itself. I set it up to have 20 words in each puzzle. As a result, Bookbolt generated a different number of rows and columns in each puzzle! I got so that out of 50 pages, part of it was 15*15, another part 16*16 and even 1 puzzle came out 20*20! (I contacted Bookbolt technical support and they confirmed that I cannot set the grid size on my end, the program does it automatically.) How do the buyers of the book feel about that? How do you overcome such difficulties? Thank you

    • @CraigBabin
      @CraigBabin  Год назад

      Most word search puzzle books should have a consistent level of difficulty throughout. Try to make sure that there are an even number of long words and shorter words in each puzzle. If you do that, your puzzle grids should stay pretty consistent as well.
      If they do vary by one or two rows or columns, I really don't think anyone will notice. Just as long as the theme and the level of difficulty, remain the same throughout.

    • @Laikina_Art
      @Laikina_Art Год назад

      @@CraigBabin Thanks for your comment! I didn't think people were interested in solving words of the same length. I thought it was the other way around - they wanted to do the short ones, and to wrestle with the long ones.)

    • @CraigBabin
      @CraigBabin  Год назад

      @@Laikina_Art They don't all have to be long, but if your puzzles are going to have 20 words in them, make sure each puzzle has 10 long words, 5 medium words and 5 short words. By keeping that format throughout, your column and row numbers should stay consistent.

    I think the main issues I am having is lining up the words after they are generated. For example, if I am asking for 20 words each, instead of it neatly stacking four columns, it is providing three columns, the first two being seven words, and the last column laying out six words. It's sort of frustrating, but I might be too anal to let it go also. The two books I purchased has them neatly lined up the way I want it, so not sure if there is an easy way of doing this

    • @CraigBabin
      @CraigBabin  Год назад +1

      There is an easier way. Just use the grid generator with 4 or 5 vertical rows (which ever you prefer). Make sure your snap tool is turned on at the bottom of the page. Then just type out each word individually and then snap them up against each respective vertical line on your grid ... until you have 4 or 5 columns of words. The first letter of every word should be perfectly left justified in each column.
      If you're not sure how to use the grid generator, watch my video on how to create connect the dot books in Book Bolt. I go over using the grid in that video.
