I was 17 when I fell in love with smashing pumpkins Mellon collie......and have been a fan even now that I am 40.....what started as a journey back in 1997 is now part of the footprints that made up my life
You and I are the same. Mellon Collie is a masterpiece. That was my soundtrack to high school. Adore was the soundtrack for my graduation. Saw them a couple of times before they broke up. Then saw them two years ago in Las Vegas, nostalgia overload I must say.
I was 10 in 1995, thanks to my 1980 born Sister. Otherwise, i will be 100% rap music. Thanks to my sister and my dad (Stones, The Who) i'm a 1985 born ecclectic music fan from the Stones, the Pink Floyd, Punk, New Wave, Grunge to Dirty South rap music.
This was my first gig as a 15 year old. Told my parents I was staying at my mates house and went down from Belfast on the bus alone. I was a bit nervous but had one of the best nights of my life. I only just found out this footage existed in 2024.
Great band! Darcy has a lovely voice accompanying Billy. And a beautiful woman too. Instrumental work here is impressive. Glad their drummer has returned. And Iha. Now they need Wretsky.
How I wish I could have seen them live in their prime. Here's hoping that Billy and D'arcy can bury the hatchet and bring all four original members together once again.
I feel like The Smashing Pumpkins in their prime would have been shortly before the Adore album came out, when they still had Jimmy on the drums. I always thought he brought something unique to the band that was lost when they replaced him with this Kenny Aronoff guy who was mainly a studio musician that filled in for different drummers. I always thought the Pumpkins were never quite as good as they were during the Mellon Collie era. Those first few albums were all really good and it seemed like they had just found their signature sound.
Recovering from a life ruined by drugs. Anxiety issues likely because of the psychological damage she took from drugs plus botched up huge lips that got ruined through face lifting (to be fair, she seemed to have stage anxiety all throughout her career). She had the opportunity to reunite with late Smashing Pumpkins but ruined that as well. The reason afaik is that she got butthurt when Corgan asked her to be part time first just to see how she performs. Considering her anxiety issues plus decades of not performing music that was a reasonable thing to ask. He didn't want to risk having to drop a tour in case she couldn't handle it. He even asked her to meet up and jam long before just to see beforehand how well she does but she never showed up. They then made the decision to get a different bass player instead. It's kinda sad. Wish i could go back to the nineties and save her from ruining her life.
SpocksBro Idk if she ruined her chance to reunite...that’s a he/she said situation. That’s just speculation. And yeah she definitely should have left her face alone. She was so damn beautiful
I remember reception of Adore was very mixed with most people being disappointed that it wasn't "rocking" (which I imagine would also reflect in the live gigs, which I didn't attend). However, I quickly grew to appreciate this record, a wonderful testament to dealing with grief. The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete was a favourite I would listen to on repeat and had forgotten about. Fantastic.
I loved a lot of it. I didn’t get how people were like “meh!” Like Jimmy left. The sound was going to change with a new drummer. Matt did his best but he’s from Filter thats known to be pretty heavy. Hence the loud/sharp snare (I think). The jazz influence of Jimmy isn’t there. If you’ve followed them for decades you notice the difference. I was SUPER lucky to see them twice with D’arcy! Billy actually put me on a guest list. It was sold out at the 930 Club. I was obsessed with Billy. As a teenager I was troubled. Abusive home, death threats at school. I was a musician. I played violin, guitar, piano, flute, and can sing. I got lost in the music. It was a great escape. I don’t know why more people don’t appreciate Adore. It’s almost like a funeral, lol. They were super depressed I bet. At least I would be if my drummer left. Poor Pumpkins!
same. i can tell u 1st hand i was a fan in 1998, and i didnt buy it. i was pissed off that they sounded kinda electronica-spliced. and the Adore video was too weird for my tastes at the time. Listening to the album today with fresh ears, i def like it.
Was 22 when Mellon Collie came out and purposefully ignored it at the time. Was a huge fan of Gish and Siamese dream, but living in that time, there was so much mainstream hype around bands like the Pumpkins and such overdone imagery in the MTV videos that I just got sick of any of the bands that seemed to be basking in all that glory. It's funny because after finding this video, I've actually have fallen in love with these songs and have watched/listened to this probably 20 times and have had Mellon Collie and Adore on constant repeat for several days. The audio recording on this vid is excellent and has a nice warm, vintage feel to it. Well done!
Reminds me of the story of when Jimmy first saw the Billy, James, and D'Arcy and they were with a drum machine. "It was awful, but the song writing was great."
I found this after watching a recent Kenny Aronoff interview this week about his time with the Pumpkins all these years later. He mentioned this gig and I’d forgotten I’d listened to it probably on Dave Fanning live and remembered seeing it on telly somewhere as well. I recorded the concert on my tape deck and listened to it so much, such a beautiful gig. Some old friends from my teenage years were at the gig and they shout out another friend’s name at 39:40, brings lots of great memories back 😀
The producer carrys some co-responsibility here. He felt it was necessary to re-track because Billy outperformed James and D‘arcy by miles on the Instruments and they couldn‘t fulfill the requirements that were needed for the record. Different situation live of course.
I'm 31 and I'm an obsessed new Smashing Pumpkins fan! I've heard them many times on the radio etc but have only just got into them and dived into their massive catalogue of songs. I don't know how I've gone so long without truly appreciating them ♥
sounds about right, that's how it always starts off. no matter the era you "discovered" them, that giant catalogue always feels like its all yours. then you move on to the remixing phase, you're own version of mellon collie/sd/adore/etc with your own fav bsides throw in. on and on.
Agree.. I first really listened to them about 2008. Then realized.. how did I miss all this? Well raising kids. But i had given up listening to music & this music returned me. They are one of my faves forever. Genius all
@maninamerica2046 goodwill is hit or miss, & some goodwill stores are great; some never have anything good. City to city, they're all different; then thieves working there, yeah
I seen them in 1996 in Detroit MI i was 16 and tripping my ball'z off on Acid and it was 1 of the best show'z i have ever seen. 90's music just plain badass🤘.
Watched this tour live in Sao Paulo at a venue also called Olympia. D'Arcy would gaze at nowhere, and she'd look right at where I was. And how awesome looking she was in 97-98.
This was their first gig back in Ireland after that poor girl got crushed at the point theatre on the Mellon Collie tour. I remember watching this live on TV that night. They're just nothing without Jimmy.
Gish. First was the best. Raw. Full of emotion and pure rock fury. Siamese Dream is a very close 1.5 and sometimes takes over the top spot in my mind...all depends on what I'm listening to.
Why choose only one? But if I had to have one album it would have Thru the Eyes of Ruby, Geek USA, Everlasting Gaze, the End is the beginning is the End, Eye and For Martha on it. Oh and the Aeroplane Turns Left, Looks Right. And Porcelina, no wait Muzzle. I could neglect listening to quite a lot of the catalog but there are some really great tracks on every release.
In 1991 I had never heard of Smashing Pumpkins and bought 'Gish' on a whim. I still listen to and love their early music but after D'Arcy left, not so much.
D’arcy was 25 years ahead in her fashion sense. Totally captured the imagination of thousands. She added an element to the early SP songs that can never be replaced. I hope she is doing well wherever she is. I hope she knows how much we miss her.
Drummers are tense and rushed. Part of the vibe is jimi's laid back, jazz approach to the kit. even when you watch him play you see him sot sway and move with the music. This dude is a machine gun that never brings it down to a lower gear. Makes some of these songs sound too overwhelming.
I went to their Adore concert in Genova, Italy.... it was great, an important part of my youth... still regret not having gone to their MC&IS concert, that would have been epic!
Without Jimmy, they needed THREE percussionists to fill the void he left behind... And still it's just not quite the same without him. We love you Jimmy!

Wow the tale of dusty and pistol Pete !! Brings memories when I first heard the Adore album when I was 15. Very underrated album, Billy was at his very prime.
I don't think that there is a second of " dead air space"" there was always musical notes lingering in the air..gently, graceful & masterfully weaving the songs to make a comforting good feeling,.which many times tied a knot in my throat as I sing along.,..my eyes in a haze of tear drops,...." too many years built into memories"

For those of you giving out about this gig please remember that 2 years prior to this at a Pumpkins gig in what was the called The Point a fan was crushed to death about 3 or 4 songs into the set and the gig has to be abandoned. This was their first gig back in Dublin since that fatal moment. They played The Olympia which is a small intimate place plus it was an all seated setup as well.
+David Hamill I was at this gig, seated in the back row and it sucked balls!! Bouncers were going ape shit at anyone who tried to stand up and I got shit for taking a photo!
I was at this gig too - seated upstairs. I dont remember the bouncers hassling people for very long. It was annoying but my recollection is that by the middle of the third song people were getting to their feet upstairs and ignoring them anyway. I've seen the Pumpkins a number of times and I actually really enjoyed this gig. But I guess you had a very different experience. I can understand that. I've been to plenty of shows where I remembered it being crap, but my friends thought the opposite. I remember the audience giving the drumming by Kenny Aronoff and his team a standing ovation half way through and the same at the end for TSP. But like I said, we obviously experienced the gig very differently!
Kevin Hanrahan I love the pumkins I really do but I wouldn't have went to see them during this period, very self indulgent and terrible renditions of there classics, I saw them in 2000 wen they done the comeback tour at Glasgow secc, very slow to begin with but picked up halfway through then again in Glasgow O2 on zeitgiest tour alot better they were but still wouldn't say they were great, again alot of crazy jams and renditions of great songs like heavy metal machine, ruby and when they did play the classics it was just a quick run through
Hey David. I hear ya. I caught them that tour too - but in the Olympia again (2000). It was a bit of a mess you're right. There were some great moments but there was a lot of self indulgence. Still though, the pumpkins on their worst night beats most other bands on their best - in my opinion. Adore was my favourite SP album for years so to see it live was just such a treat. Could the 1998 gig have been better? Sure. I think if I'd gone along hoping for plenty of MCIS and bit of Siamese Dream I'd have been royally f**ked off! But I was already obsessing over Adore when they played this gig in Dublin. I worked in Virgin Megastore at the time and had my copy the day before launch - so I knew it inside and out and was just over the moon to see it.
Nice one. I was at that gig. Was the first time I saw them. 4 times total. Last one a few weeks ago in Dublin. Never saw the full original band lineup. No Jimmy for this one and no D'arcy for the others since.
I was at this show lol, front row left side. Never knew it was recorded. Some history- Mellon tour, a girl unfortunately died during the Dublin show. So this time they played the Olympia which is an all seater (and much smaller) venue. sold out day of sale. After all the build up and anticipation, my abiding memory of the show was it was a bit too low energy for my taste.
I was just thinking the other night about which bands I would like to see live in concert if I could travel back in time. The top three were The Doors, Nirvana, and the Smashing Pumpkins. Then I hear about The Smashing Pumpkins reunion tour, well at least I will be able to see one band live. Can't wait!
Thanks for this upload man, remember I was so gutted I didn't get tickets.. but I think 2FM broadcasted this live, still have the tape recordings, was at the point gig prior to this.. sad what happened, I remember Billy pausing half way through the concert, expressing his concern for crowds..
Yeah 2fm did broadcast that you're right. That concert in the point was a nightmare for all involved yeah. I missed that - and to be honest I'm glad. I've listened to the bootlegs of the show over the years - very sad. I remember being very concious of that when they took the stage this night in Dublin. Anyway the Olympia show was great. Loved every second of it.
I think a pivotal moment in SP concerts in general, crowd control, security etc.. I believe Billy did console with the Cork girls family. thanks again for upload.
When you have 2 percussionists and 1 drummer replacing Jimmy Chamberlin, you realize how important and irreplaceable Jimmy was to the Pumpkins. Ultimately, firing Jimmy damaged their legacy. Very happy he eventually came back.
i agree, but i think you need to google who the man in the yellow tint glasses is behind the kit. regarded as one of the greatest drummers of all-time. (as jimmy is)
I get the point of the guys who say that 3 people was necessary to replace Jimmy but no. Jimmy alone couldn't deliver all the atmosphere needed to perform songs from Adore. Having said that, Jimmy is a powerful rock drummer and fits in SP perfectly. Kenny Aronoff and the two percussionists did well during this tour.
V3GAMINGBROS he has probably realised that he can be a selfindulgent tosser haha even though I reguard him as one of the greatest songwriters ever but this live era sucked
Really? I don't think so. Billy's glance at 2:28 shows something else entirely ... I think he guessed the end of the band because of D'Arcy's drug addiction ... What a sad story.
D'arcy wasn't by herself with that. Everybody in SP has had issues with substance abuse and been through rehab, including Billy. Chamberlin has probably gone through it a half dozen times. As of 2017 it's been stated that everybody has cleaned up and is trying to stay that way (just to say something positive, ya heard).
Wish I was there and I live in Dublin suppose you can't go to every gig when your working your Ass off and I Love The Smashing Pumpkins and the Olympia Theatre🎃❤
I went right to "1979" and it is unrecognizable. I don't know why so many people are raving about this concert. The little that I've heard sounds horrible as is "Billy Goats" singing.
Really wish D'Arcy could've been part of the reunion tour. Miss you ice princess!!
You mean, meth princess
She was unbelievably hot. And cool
In this video I miss Jimmy Chamberlain
@@roquesanta9769 don’t think he’s gay but cool for you
They honestly sound a million times better with a real bass player. I did like her tho.

What an amazing first show
Damn, that is just awesome man!!! And just found out recently that it's right here on RUclips ❤
I haven’t listened to these live versions I forever but Jimmy not being there is really noticeable sound-wise.
It required three drummers to fill Jimmy.
Ta tu ceart.

D'arcy the ❤️🔥💓 most beautiful bassist forever. We still Love ya in 2024 d'Arcy Wretzky

The Adore time is good memories
Adore - my favorite album by Pumpkins. Miss those times.
I love Darcy´s look
anything to do with her boobs on display?!
The adore era and the shows just some of the most amazingly beautiful music ever created!
What an amazing performance. Billys voice is brilliant. Adore live is stunning.
I thought this was probably their worst concert ever.
Not a single song is played like it was recorded.
The entire show is one experiment.
@@mart_en .....I remember watching this and being so dissapointed. I thought they sounded terrible.

Waiting for that image. Usually it looks like he's trying to hold her responsible for their voices not being harmonious. But it's him
oh my god been looking for this for ages!!!
thanx so much, beautiful youth memories coming back!!!
@Kevin Hanrahan : Respect for your thorough research and descriptions. Surely a band that deserves it.
thank you so much for this
One of the greatest songs ever
They never get old
I miss all of you Guys. I'm your forever avid hardcore fanatic 😍❤️🙏🙏🙏
I love the Adore era!
Me too!
I adore the adore era
I adore your cute face ;) But also the Adore era. SP's most expansive yet subtle era for sure.
I didn't appreciate it at the time, but in retrospect that album was killer.
Beatriz Vicencio
not bad, but when you listen
to siamese dream right after
that record, it’s pretty clear
which one of those is the
masterpiece...
Great performance of "For Martha" here. A classic Pumpkins style song.
They're reuniting next year! The original line-up, confirmed by Billy himself! Cant wait!
Epic band , Billy’s a genius love the guys voice 👍
Baldy Peter Sellers was amazing on drums at this gig! 😃👌
For those of you giving out about this gig please remember that 2 years prior to this at a Pumpkins gig in what was the called The Point a fan was crushed to death about 3 or 4 songs into the set and the gig has to be abandoned. This was their first gig back in Dublin since that fatal moment. They played The Olympia which is a small intimate place plus it was an all seated setup as well.
brian ruane a seated pumpkins gig sounds great fun........not!!!!
Thanks for sharing, 1998 what a great year, great times that never coming back, no matter what i still live and its 2018 ImI
THANKS for sharing this i,m a big fan of this band
Craig Falconer no problem!
31:37 Nice and original to the vocal arrangement in the album
For Martha and Blank Page... the most brilliant and beautiful tunes made by this incredible band...
Can't wait!
Danny Girl Designs Led Zeppelin, Jeff Buckley, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles..
Btw I saw them -96 abouts in Singapore Millencollie tour, was insane
Definitely Jimi Hendrix, there's so many great bands, you just can't choose one.
I hope you got to/get to see The Shiny and Oh So Bright tour!! It was the best concert experience of my life
Seen pumpkins twice nirvana once wish the doors but born in 81 so not possible on that one but yes get out and see the greats of at all possible
Tonight Tonight needs a Big Muff imo 😉
Great video!!
For Martha gives me chills every time I hear it.
Q delicisia de musica excelentes un honor haberlos visto en concierto en el palacio d los deportes un muy buen recuerdo d mi juventud
Very welcome!
One of the best bands to see live
Thanks Great Concert!
why does this 1979 version sound.... alot more happy and dancey? its awesome
sério... a primeira música... é como se eu estivesse no céu. que sensação maravilhosa
Jimmy = 3 drummers
My favourite town & my favourite band....wish I had been there..
Thank you !
such great memories from these songs.
This is pure gold!
When you have 2 percussionists and 1 drummer replacing Jimmy Chamberlin, you realize how important and irreplaceable Jimmy was to the Pumpkins. Ultimately, firing Jimmy damaged their legacy. Very happy he eventually came back.
Totally agree. I’m glad he was able to overcome addiction and continue to deliver his unbelievable talent.
i agree, but i think you need to google who the man in the yellow tint glasses is behind the kit. regarded as one of the greatest drummers of all-time.
@@josecarlosramos7007 I dont know if you ever overcome addiction But it would be nice to see him healty for at least one tour. As soon as possible.
@ODIN Force I have to say I agree
The smile on Billy's face when he's singing the chorus to Ava shows how happy he was. Either that or he just saw something funny.
I remember reading somewhere Billy was on a lot of downers, and something else during this era. Either it was that, or saw something funny.
He just saw someone shapeshift.
Rocking 90$❤❤
My idol smashing pumpkins..
Nice 👍 lods..
From my country Philippines rocking save of the planet earth 🌍 and God 🙏 whit us blessed
Is that Kenny Aronoff on drums? Ah yes it is!
que vuelva D´Arcy y podamos disfrutar el grupo original nuevamente...
Obi eso nunca va a pasar
Wish I was there and I live in Dublin suppose you can't go to every gig when your working your Ass off and I Love The Smashing Pumpkins and the Olympia Theatre🎃❤
How I feel about some of the arrangement choices 30:41
Billy's wtf-look at D'Arcy when she meets wrong notes on "To Sheila", lol.
I know, like he didn't fuck up, Love him and the band but Billy is a bit of a dick.
"Perfect" version is quite nice
I went right to "1979" and it is unrecognizable. I don't know why so many people are raving about this concert. The little that I've heard sounds horrible as is "Billy Goats" singing.
