- Here's a demo of the immense possibilities of the string sounds on GarageBand iOS. Apple very obviously got the right consultants in on this one (well, every other department as well....)
As a string player, I'm always keen on doing recording work, and while these sounds are very good, of course you can't do everything that a string player can do, but these sounds are extremely capable and is rather a boon to any song-writer.

“Little Brown Bars” - great name for a jazz fusion pub band. Well done as always Dan.
Hi Pete-I'm so sorry it's taken an age to get back to you, but thanks for your kind words on my videos! I'm going to try and do some tunes in a classical vein. I'm involved in a building project at the moment so I'm trying to grab bits of time elsewhere to make films. I'm getting a camera kit for my iPad so I can play sounds with my USB digital piano!
This was quite enlightening. Densely-packed controls and a lot of functionality. I have used pizzicato in a basic way in a song I released, but did not know about the ‘landing zone’ for your finger making a difference for example. I did know you could customise the chords at least, but arranged the song around the defaults for ease. Although slightly hobbled in some ways, the iOS GB is an astonishing piece of music software, derided by some, but personally having Cubase 10 and Studio One 4, I struggled. Not fighting with music, but fighting with Bus and other details. In the end I bought an iPad Pro 2 and have been able to focus on making music. Thanks again for the demo/tutorial Dan.
This is a great addition Dan ...thanks for this video!
They also make 5 String versions of these instruments, 5 String Violins w/ a Low C, 5 String Violas w/ a High E, 5 String Cellos w/ a High E, & 5 String Upright Basses w/ a Low B.
This is the third video I’ve watched by dan and I’ve subscribed my face clean off!!!...nobody else is going this deep into garage band!!!....I’ve learned loads already!!!😎
Wow! What a revelation! Beautiful possibilities ... Thank you, Dan, for making all this available to us!
Whoa, never knew about the multi-touch on the auto-play! I am going to have to check this out in more detail. Thank you!
Great demo, I can't believe I missed the multi touch variations. I also didn't know about the articulation editing. Time for a reinstall.
Awesome video and very in-depth. Thank you 😀
I learned about the multi-touch awhile back, however, you detailed things that were missed. Best iOS Garageband tutes ever! Keep on rockin', Dan! Apple should putting deposits in your bank account, man.
Great. Thanks for the clear info. Very useful
Very useful info on strings!! I didnt know we could do so much customization in strings
iPhone XR is the new phone. iPad is not the only way it can do the audio but it’s so fun to get the app. MacBook is a new one but it doesn’t work it just crashes.
No doubt about it, Garageband is amazing. Excellent video, Dan. Thank you
Wow. I learned so much from this video. Thanks.
Hello Dan. First I would like to thank you for the excellent videos you produce. They have helped me greatly. Secondly, I was just curious about your take on the composition and arrangement, especially the string progressions in Al Stewart's "The Year of The Cat."
You are simply the best mate! Thanks heaps for all you do for the rest of us!
Amazing! Thanks for sharing your knowledge of the program and music theory. Would have never found some of those features.
Very nicely done. Looking forward to more.
Dan u da man! Thanks for unveiling the power of Garage band for me.
Amazing! I’m addicted to your videos!
Wow, you can add variations to the pre-made cords? Had no idea! 🤯
It’s so good, GarageBand. You can basically do pretty much what you want!
thats fucing good than my logic stuido strings...
They are designed with a really good “real world”
Approach
Good video. Very helpful.
Very helpful. Thanks!
Awsome DAW....Viva Apple!,,
Great tutorial!
really useful, thanks
Loved it
great video
🙌
Dan Baker What Ipad do you use????
How you do glissando?
Do you know how to make the notes higher? You can’t change the octaves on the violins for some reason, even though you can on almost every other instrument. The keyboard violins are one way to do it but it doesn’t sound very good. I honestly don’t get your enthusiasm as I think the strings in GarageBand are a huge fuck up
The first thing to recognise is that it’s a piece of free software. As a first-study violinist, I’d be the first to understand the string plugin’s considerable limitations. It’s the auto play rhythms and pizzicato that make this a useable part of GarageBand. I do agree with you that single line stuff isn’t really any good, unless it’s part of a mix and not soloistic. Making the notes higher would be something that’s possible only on playback, where you can edit the notes on the piano roll. I’ve just bought a new computer and logic X, and the strings on that aren’t a huge amount better than iOS!
And how in the world does one find this in GarageBand???
how do i combine piano with strings
lash570 to combine piano and strings, you need to record the piano first, then duplicate your track. Copy the piano part, then paste it onto the new piano track. On the new piano track, go to the keyboard button, and change sound to anything you like, including strings...
@@DanBakerMusic thanks ,,,I'm confused about recording a sound - I don't mean for a specific piano part,,,, I have Ravenscroft piano app and I think I put it in garage band but don't know how to add another track ,,like strings,,,whenever I try ,,,,,,the ravenscroft disappears...?
Very helpful, thanks!
