Hello, How much degree is frost resistance for Manuka?
It depends on the region the plants are grown. Its best to eco-source seeds from the same area you are planning to plant in. A plant from Northland will be less frost tolerant compared to a plant from South island high-country for example. The plants are frost tolerant, but depending on how hard and frequent the frosts could have a greater impact.
Thanks for the Video
Please advise me for a good site to buy the seeds
Helpful vids👍 questionI have a lifestyle block that has a lot of Manuka down in a gully and wondering how would I go about testing the plants for UMF? Thinking if high I could start raising seedlings 🌱 for the honey and oil industry... cheers
Hi there, yes you can have the nectar from the flowers tested. Analytica laboratories do testing. They have labs in Hamilton, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. There's a very detailed PDF about the process here: www.analytica.co.nz/Portals/0/Docs/Collecting%20A%20Nectar%20Sample%20V5.pdf?ver=2018-12-12-162548-097
@@FarmsToForests why is it only grown in NZ?
@@Thefunksoulbro It's a native plant in Aotearoa NZ, but is not endemic.
@@FarmsToForests thanks, I'm assuming that it can be grown in most hot contries then?
@@Thefunksoulbro The plants grow in a variety of climates and soil types here in NZ (sub-tropical and temperate).
Some good info here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leptospermum_scoparium
When i buy this flower?
Kindly advice how to get some good manuka seeds thanks
You would be best to look to search for a NZ seed supplier. The plant is Leptospermum scoparium.
Thanks for the video. Pruning video would be nice 😊
Once trees are established, prune back after flowering has finished, no more than 25% of the foliage. This will keep the plant in a semi-juvenile state and will produce more flowers the following year. And you can use the foliage to make oil ;)
Hi, this is really interesting. We live in North Canterbury at about 160 metres, so around 40-50 frosts a year. Would you still recommend planting manuka in winter in that environment? Cheers in advance....
Hi there, that does sound pretty tough. There would be a number of factors to consider, you could plant late winter if there was enough rainfall through spring and into summer. There are also differences in the plants from different regions and altitudes. A manuka from the Coromandel for example has softer larger leaves than say manuka from SI High Country and would likely not make it through that many frosts, however the latter tends to have much smaller, more robust leaves that should handle the frosts, eco-sourcing seeds from the area should also produce plants that will grow in the conditions. Getting them through the first summer is key. How much land are you thinking to plant?

@@FarmsToForests That's really helpful. Planting almost 10 acres. Not all manuka but it is one of the foundation natives we are intending to use.......
@@glynnrigby5512 Sound great! Hope it goes well. Have you checked out the One Billion Tree fund. You should be able to get a grant to cover the whole planting and maybe fencing as well. Talk to you local tree nursery about eco-sourced plants if you go down that route.

Hello,
We bought seeds and planted them, the plant is 2 years old, how long does it take it to blossom? It grows up nicely but no flowers yet.
Depending on when they were planted they should start flowering in the second summer, sometimes earlier.
Where did you get the Manuka Seeds from.?? Thank you.
