@@jamesihaka7823 hi, you can often find the seed capsules all year round, but best time is usually early autumn when there will be lots available. The timing then for germination and growth is good as well with it still being warm.
How big is the area you want to make the hedge? Manuka isn't really a common tree for traditional hedging, but you do see it used as in mixed shelterbelt plantings a lot.
@@TreeChatNZ hi it’s to go around our acre field it has a sloe tree hedge on an earthen bank around one half at the moment. I’d like to do the other half of the perimeter in manuka in preparation for the bee house to go in at the top in 5 or so years when established a bit and inter plant them between the sloes for when the leaves fall on the sloes there’s still a bit of cover 👍🇬🇬
@@stuartdelamare4072 sounds like a cool project! You're in the UK? I'd be recommending to check with some local growers as I'm not familiar with your conditions. But if I was doing the same here in NZ I'd be inclined to have the trees spaced 1m apart, with 2 rows and 1m between the rows, staggering the spacings between the rows. That should give a reasonably dense result within a few years, here in NZ anyway.
@@TreeChatNZ thanks for that. I’m in Channel Islands. Almost anything grows here the sloes grow like weeds there popping up everywhere many meters from the hedge I had been re planting them along the hedge but want one half for the birds and other half for the bees. I’ve bought 3 different leptospurmum plants and collected the seeds to grow the rest. as there almost £20 a plant here any excess can be sold at farmers market again many thanks 👍🇬🇬
I'm doing them from seed indoors since i ordered them from Florida and im here in Oregon and its almost winter and cold. Should i put them on a heat mat and under my led grow lights? I also plan to use vermiculite because its indoors and i don't want to deal with fungus or gnats that could be in starting mix.
@@avgrim7729 yes I think heat mat will be necessary and this specie does need light during the day to germinate also. Remember to only slightly cover the seeds with a very fine layer of whatever mix you are using. Good luck!
@TreeChatNZ I covered them lightly like I did when I germinated fig seeds. I put them in a tray with a clear lid so the light will get to the seeds. Thanks for the reply!
manuka seed requires light for germination, should not cover it with mix on top on the seed . Basically just spray them on the soil and cover with a see through
Great vid.
Kia ora, great video. What is the best time of year to collect the pods off the manuka tree?

Could you tell me please. How far apart should the spacing be planted if I were to make a hedge. and how many rows many thanks 👍🇬🇬

This method has worked well for me but I will have to give that method a crack as well
