I’ve owned an Evoque and and early new model XC60. Had to dispose of the Volvo as the various safety features drove me mad. Slamming brakes on for no apparent reason, constant binging and buzzers going off and I couldn’t get on with the touch screen. My understanding is this system is common to XC40. This was one of the first cars so maybe they’ve sorted the software but mine went back to Volvo a number of times without resolution. The Evoque was reliable (despite all the comments on here) and my only criticism was the gearbox which they have now improved fitting the 8 speed ZF box. Every single one - even the Chinese knockoffs. But I haven't driven a car in the last 10 years+ that wasn't nice to drive or (I'm sure) easy to live with.
This review seemed a bit biased from the get go, he just ignored the flaws of the Evoque, eg, the cheap looking sets, slow infotainment, less practical, harder suspension...it was too obvious what car would win. Why bother making these "comparison videos" at all? just make a huge commercial for the evoque and that's it.
Volvos never win these comparisons. Not sure why. Well, maybe not never but hardly ever. I think the Volvo would be quieter with smaller wheels. They always pick the R versions over the quieter Inscription versions.
At 10:32 "plastic coat hangy things here" ... They are for hanging your shopping bag handles on, to stop your shopping falling out whilst braking and going around corners!!!
Worth noting... the electric folding rear seats on the XC40 are not available in the UK anymore, so my dealer informed me when I asked where they were, after I picked our car this week..... gutted, as they were a proper useful option to have.... still has electric folding rear head rests though..no point... but despite that its a great car to drive...the phone app is really good option...
I'm a Land Rover fan and actually own 2 of them, but this Volvo CX40 is beautiful (I would just change the interior color, don't love that pumpkin orange) and I do believe in this specific case Volvo wins. Of course if we compare the XC60 or XC90 against The Range Rover Velar or the Range Rover Sport I would definitely go with Land Rover.
So, the XC40's better by every metric except NVH levels yet this is somehow close? 😂 More practical storage innovations & space. Better value for money, performance & fuel efficiency. Hmmm.. 👀
How did you come to the conclusion that its better value for money? You buy a £6K more expensive Evoque with cash, you will pay less over 3 years than a Volvo as the Evoque holds its value so well. Perfaormace is relative. Would you like to give me an example of one of Volvo storage innovations - that is, not been available on any car previous to it? If you mean the removable centre console,, I can do that in a Sport, which was launched prior to the XC40.
@@Clavinovaman Wrong again gary - Volvo residuals mean that monthly payments over 3 years much lower then on Evoque. An as for your examples of storage, just look at the door bins - and where they have moved stereo speakers to. Harmon Kardon speakers are very good in the XC40.
Sorry, but it is you that is wrong my dear. Monthly payments in the Evoque are lower and you can spend approximately £5-£7K on an Evoque cash, and in three years youll have lost less money on the Evoque, But we shall see who is right. Ill be back in 3 years time.
Well: the Evoque is better in Design (subjective); Interior Quality and Equipment; the XC40 is better in Space, Riding Confort, Performance and Economy; Reliability. It looks clear to me that the XC40 would be the winner, at the end of the test. OBS.: I believe you should have put the cars in an offroad test, also, before giving the final verdict. The Land Rover would stand out, for sure.
I would like to know what are service and maintenance cost? How much costs me each car after lets say 100 000 miles. Which one holds more value, which are more reliable?
I've heard others say similar things about the XC40, but I genuinely cannot see it. The rear looks like a Rover 25 facelift from 2003 - even the lettering is positioned the same. That straight line running from the front bonnet to the font doors is just horrible. On many of the 'public review' pages, the most endearing exterior design element seems to be the daytime running lights. All those millions of pounds of investment and the single most interesting element is the daytime running lights? I'm sure the designers are delighted. But it is inside where I have the biggest gripe. Ugly, over designed and oversized airvents with a naff looking and sounding infotainment system in the middle. Couple this with undersized buttons and you have a mishmash of design themes that really doesn't gel. Totally get the practicality though. The interior design was introduced in the XC90 a few years ago where it looked new and fresh. But you don't see many car companies being influenced with that design. It really hasn't aged well and shrinking it to fit the smaller car, it all seems a little busy and squashed. And those are among the reasons why it won't hold its value as much as the Evoque - its much less fussy, classier, nicer materials, clean design and it will age very well.
Gary J. Some people like the Volvo styling, I think the Infotainment system looks great and I find it hard to grasp the concept of using the Range rovers lower screen without drifting off the road.
@@bigbadbear2962. As far as the dual screen is concerned - try it. Honestly, you may well surprise yourself. Works extremely well. The two rotary buttons are much easier to use than the touch screen in the Volvo. I agree, of course, that 'style' is a personal thing, but the Volvo is a mishmash of different design themes cobbled together rather than a sophisticated design. The front and rear, for example, bear no design correlation whatsoever - the rear looking like a 16 year old Rover 25 facelift. Which are among the reasons why it doesn't hold its value particularly well. The infotainment is a big let down - even the Kia system looks and sounds better. Even at basic spec, the Evoque hi-fi is fantastic.
If you go for the Evoque, my advice is do *not* option 21 inch wheels nor the black interior. If you want boring black plastic, get a Volvo, Ford or Skoda The Evoque is available with a lovely blue leather interior, cream and if you are brave enough...burgundy. Looks great with the limited edition paint.
Why the chuff are so many reviewers hung up on infotainment? Is the car comfortable, safe, reliable and well bolted together? Does it handle well, stop well and can it handle a speed bump at more than 5mph?
Exactly, i go for looks on outside an comfort an space, really dont care about infotainment system size or speed. Just bought a kia sportage 68 plate 1.6 petrol isg2 model in infra red and more thsn than happy with it and economical too get over 40 mpg in the city and 50 mpg going to work, bought this car based on looks outside, size an practicality has an infotainment screen but haven't used it yet, only for radio lol, 😁
It’s like one reviewer says it and then it just gets reiterated in other reviews. Completely overlooking other features like voice command that would mitigate any UI problems. Reviewers do the same thing with Tesla vehicles
No but you still have to look at a screen to see where your scrolling with a dial. Fact of the point is voice control is quicker and safer then taking your hands off a wheel or looking away at a screen.
You may as well just have the test between an XC40 and a hire car, as you'll see very little of the Evoque if you own it as it will be in LR service department.
Having all the controls routed through the touchscreen just made me decide against the XC40- It seems like a trivial aggravation until you have to drive something like that. You shouldn’t have to go five menus deep to change the fade or turn the bass down. Also if and when that thing glitches out it causes all sorts of unforeseen problems. My current vehicle, will automatically turn the seat and steering wheel heaters on when it’s cold outside. One day my touchscreen was unresponsive and I had a 100 mile commute! I was sweating like crazy and contorting my body while loosely gripping the wheel ( real safe I know) to keep my ass and hands from burning. Eventually I pulled over ( again in cold weather) and found the fuses... what a pain
The XC40’s infotainment system doesn’t even have 3 levels of menu…. Nevertheless; have owned one for the last year & I just need physical controls for air conditioning in additional to media. There’s media controls on both the steering wheel & under the screen which is redundant. There is voice control but it’s not very reliable. I’d also like a portrait orientation for the screen + navigation in the digital dash + a HUD: the screen is too small when showing navigation and I have to glance down and do my left to view directions, which doesn’t feel safe. Other than that, it’s far superior to my previous car: Range Rover Evoque. XC40 has better rear seat space & boot space and “feels” smaller to drive. It’s not as wide as the evoque and j swear is a smaller car, but manages to have far better interior space
My days of driving coupes, soft tops and hatchbacks is sadly over. At 75, we both suffer from difficulty getting in and out of the E class coupe, so it's an SUV for us. I asked my beloved which of all the cars we have owned was the most comfortable ( knowing what the answer would be) the s60 she said, and I had to agree, so I think the Volvo for us, but I do like the Evoque's looks and interior
Never heard such a biased and unprofessional view, ....so the Volvo has an entertainment/control system which it turns out is exactly the same working setup as the Land Rover, but because the land rover has two dials to change the heat temperature, its better??... Why would you want two setup screens for starters when the Volvo has it all directly infront of you, without the need to take your eyes directly off the road and look down into the centre of the car as in the case of the Land Rover. Why not point out to people you dont have to have the Lava Orange inserts in the interior. Poor standards of journalism, wont be looking at What Car for advice.
Is the latest Evoque still likely to have steering rack bolt failure ? It’s all very well talking about cup holders, but the steering rack fault is a £3000 fix.
2:00 well it would make sense, Volvo follows and uses Scandinavian designs and making most of the controls on the tablet infotainment-display, clears up a lot of space! I personally like it, and it’s INE of the best responsive systems on the market
Hahaha. You're a comedian, Jani? Ah, I thought so... You're going to tell us next that the Volvo is more refined, better built, better residuals, classier and a better buy than a Porsche Macan. _So funny._ Just save up for a little longer and you'll realise just how mediocre the Volvo is.
@@Clavinovaman No. You're a comedian, Gary. I owe an 2019 XC40 and my previous car was a 2016 BMW 318i. You cannot even compare the Sensus in Volvo with BMW's iDrive. I liked the simplicity and how intuitive iDrive is, but Sensus is the best car system I have seen so far.
Volvo def wins, the Peugeot evoke or is it the Citroen beckham will just be for numptys, I have The XC90 and the info display works a treat, only time I touch it is for Seat massage, all the other settings are set and forget
I have just picked up my XC40 last Friday. What an amazing car! My previous car was a 2016 BMW 318i and I can tell you that Volvo's Sensus is a way better from the iDrive. I enjoy using it much, much more.
Anyone know how to turn off or disable the auto stop/start feature, just bought a 2020 Range Rover and it’s so annoying to have to manually turn it off each time I start the car.
So is the Volvo XC40...it also fares very well in cold and snowy weather. When everyone was skidding left, right & centre, I had no problems driving in my XC40 confidently...
What a poor review Just one example, you say that the Range Rover system is better but confusing at the same time and you need to spend some time adapting 5:32, while on the XC40 it's simpler and easier to get used to. We can see that you just made this comparison to favor the Range Rover in denigrating the XC40, and you could see it as you toss the garbage lid to the rear seats 3:27 and if you don't know why you can remove the lid from the waste bin, it's in order to be able to put a bag, or to make it easier to remove it. The XC40 is far better in every way than the Range Rover.
The Volvo XC40. The Volvo is better in every way even holding its value better. No one is going to use a car like this off-road and if doing so you should not buy the Evoque but one of the other Range/Land Rovers. What also is strange in this review complaining about Apple carplay where the screen in the Evoque is smaller than the one in the Volvo. Getting used to the system in the Volvo is easier. In the Evoque you still need to look down checking is you are in the correct submenu. Safety first?
XC40 still looks rather 'futuristic-y' out, whereas the Evoque looks 'generic-y' in my opinion. Also an XC40 EV is apparently on the way, whereas the Evoque will get PHEV at most.
Why are people so bitter, just cause he’s British does not mean he is biased towards British cars, most British people love to criticise the uk and it’s people almost as much as they love to criticise the weather !
Just compare range rover p300e phev with autonomy ev for 66km with XC40 , it will look like a car for children. Also if you like to go in an adventure range rover is the best off road car - all terrain response system is amazing volvo for sure will be stuck in the first obstacle
Fails to mention any safety features of both cars - did the basic spec Range Rover come with all the extra features on a R-Design Pro XC40 such as heated seats, active bending headlights, lane keeping, headlight cleaning with heated washer jets and a heated windscreen. I suspect it doesn't. So with the Volvo you get value for your money, and with the Evoque - you get an image.
Anyone giving car advice saying the evouqe is better shouldn't really be in that job.Itll spend more time at the dealers and the volvo has so much more class.
The Volvo looks cheap. I know two people who've had a Volvo over the past few years and both have sold them because they have had issues. I have this Evoque but in a higher spec with more fancy stuff. I don't understand comments that it's unreliable - mine hasn't let me down. I also have a 2017 Discovery Sport - it hasn't missed a beat or let me down either. So what are you all talking about? Do you people own either car? I'd definitely rather have a car made in England than one made in China. If Volvo was still made in Sweden I'd reconsider.

There no car like the XC40, it’s so nice and easy to drive and live with
Most cars are easy to drive and live with.
Gary J. What he was saying was it’s unique, he wasn’t saying not every car isn’t easy to live with.
@@bigbadbear2962 No, it was the same sentence, therefore his point was that the car is so easy to drive and live with. Every single car in the market today is unique.
I mean like he said the Evoque is only the s while the Volvo has a quite better trim, we had the Evoque in the HSE and it looked soo much better
Thanks for demonstrating how to empty the bin in the XC40, had no idea beforehand :-)
The guy is from the UK, obviously he picks the Land Rover...
@@maarten9844 I'm not from the UK.
Just ordered the new xc40 plug in hybrid, 265bhp can’t wait
Great review as always Doug but I'd take the XC40, thanks. Better looking in and outside and way more practical.
hahahahah
Gary J. I sat in the Range Rover while it wasn’t moving, I really couldn’t get used to it.
Why does the Evoque sell so well ,the styling is in a league of its own as Jag & Aston Martin.
The evoque doesn’t actually sell that well.
@@bigbadbear2962 it does what are you on about mate
@@greef_karga6402 only in the uk tho. In the rest of Europe the Q5, X3 and XC60 sell sometimes twice as many in a month.
I have the xc40 now but ordered a brand new range its almost ready and cant wait , waaaay more luxurious
Love evoque .
I prefer the Evoque... 😍
Evoque is way more attractive
I'll take the Evoque any day just because of its look.
Looks like an elephant has sat on the roof and the roof has collapsed at the back
XC40 a far cheaper than Evoque. There is not fair bring up this two car as comparison.
The xc40 is 3 times cheaper
Adrian Bergqvist lmao what kind of world do you live in where the XC40 is three times cheaper
CAR Reviewers on every car: Eveything is on the screen and I hate that
CAR reviewrs on the model 3: i love that everything is on the screen
Thanks for the thorough review! Can you tell me what colour the car is? Glacier silver og thunder grey i assume?
It’s pretty clear that Volvo won this comparison- fudging the result only questions your credibility
These days we don't drive cars. We drive computers.
If you want a burst of speed, just knock it down a few gears using the paddle shifters. The box can't read your mind.
You may as well just have the test between an XC40 and a hire car, as you'll see very little of the Evoque if you own it as it will be in LR service department.
Range rover is 4×4🔥
"you can use voice controls" **laughs in Scottish**
I'd have the Volvo XC40
Me too from Malaysia
Evoque feels more luxurious
But the evoque is massively unreliable. It breaks down daily, without any exaggeration. But yeah, it's the best SUV in the looks department, stunning.
@@tally1604 xc40 looks so much better than the evoque end of discussion.
@@tally1604 that is an exaggeration. I had the previous generation for 5 years and 120k mileage with no reliability issues
Great review ..... and I agree ..... I prefer the EVOQUE ! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
These don’t compare! Im a fan of both but they are simply in different leagues, and definitely call for different types of customers.
I didn’t know this size is considered as family car...
I had the 2014 Evoque for almost 4years.
Well done you.
XC40 is the best looking car on the market
2:00 well it would make sense, Volvo follows and uses Scandinavian designs and making most of the controls on the tablet infotainment-display, clears up a lot of space! I personally like it, and it’s INE of the best responsive systems on the market
The BMW infotainment system is very very poor compared to Volvo.
@@ZoranJager Yes, indeed, some people do like simplicity. But that doesn't make it better. It just makes it simpler.
Gary J. You just made his point for him
I have A class 200. I Will change to Evoque. What u think its good idé?
Evoque 😊
Volvo def wins, the Peugeot evoke or is it the Citroen beckham will just be for numptys, I have The XC90 and the info display works a treat, only time I touch it is for Seat massage, all the other settings are set and forget
Robbie Surfer
“Peugeot evoke” and “”Citroen beckham”? Who talks like this and why did 8 people even gave this comment the “thumbs up”?!
Very odd...
@@Jon-zj2nj 🤣🤣🤣I was wondering what am I missing.Very funny though!!
Looking at the A-pillar in the Evoque compared to the XC40, it's like double the size.
H B whhhat is the A pillar
I have just picked up my XC40 last Friday. What an amazing car!
My previous car was a 2016 BMW 318i and I can tell you that Volvo's Sensus is a way better from the iDrive. I enjoy using it much, much more.
Anyone know how to turn off or disable the auto stop/start feature, just bought a 2020 Range Rover and it’s so annoying to have to manually turn it off each time I start the car.
Range Rover will always be my favourite it’s amazing of road and on road it’s luxurious and comfy it’s amazing
So is the Volvo XC40...it also fares very well in cold and snowy weather. When everyone was skidding left, right & centre, I had no problems driving in my XC40 confidently...
I understand what all reviewers say about road/wind noise but who drives in silence?
Good question.😁
Thank you really nice reviews.
Good review. Both great cars 👍
Volvo xc40 the perfect suv.
The XC40 T5 has 248 hp as compared to 188 Hp on the D4 and a 0 - 60 time of 6.7 sec. The Evoque had an 8.3s time.
wish you compared by a hier spec model. mine is amazing and nothing mathes it.
What a poor review
Just one example, you say that the Range Rover system is better but confusing at the same time and you need to spend some time adapting 5:32, while on the XC40 it's simpler and easier to get used to.
4:50 can you seriously not alter seat belt height in the Evoque?
Not for fat people
Doesn't look like it
Volvo - it rocks!
I hate landrover! I love Volvo!
OK & I prefer Range Rover Evoque !!! Thanks
Safety first?
range rover 😍😍😍
Volvo is the best
How much is fuel consumption in XC40 ?
XC40 still looks rather 'futuristic-y' out, whereas the Evoque looks 'generic-y' in my opinion.
Also an XC40 EV is apparently on the way, whereas the Evoque will get PHEV at most.
Its arrived
Didn't mention the reliability of the Evoke did he!?!! Had first hand experience of Range Rover Evoke timing chain stretching after 55k!!
Why are people so bitter, just cause he’s British does not mean he is biased towards British cars, most British people love to criticise the uk and it’s people almost as much as they love to criticise the weather !
I love range rover evoque because it's price is good and have best features
Doug, I like the reviews. I also like that blue shirt on ya ;) ps Volvo FTW can't wait to own my own Polestar some day😈
Yeah thats a beutiful shirt...
Both are style over function - wouldn't touch either as a family vehicle: get a 'normal' estate (wagon) car.
Does the xc40 come without the red interior?
It does indeed Kayleigh, you can choose between Charcoal (Black), Blonde (White/Cream), Amber (light brown), or Oxide Red!
I am for Evoque
The orange trim will show the muck very quickly.
XC40 is such a great design and so good all round, I would choose it any day. I do find this review so biased and ill informed.
