These cars are such a fun hobby but every now and again you have days when you just put your face in your hand and think to your self.... 'why do I bother' 😂
A word to the wise: My 1987 C4 had chronic coolant leaks from blown gaskets between the aluminum heads to the cast-iron block. Over the span of 10-years and 50K miles, a Chevy mechanic changed them once, and I had to change them again twice before I sold it in 2004. The initial symptom for a new coolant leak was the smell of maple syrup on a warm summer’s day. 😬
I’ve driven my 1999 C5 for over 55K miles since I bought it in 2001, and replaced the main belt tensioner and belt twice (with Chevy OEM parts) because of the chronic and very annoying bearing “banshee” squeal. I discovered that the bearings on the alternator and AC compressor also squeal. I replaced the alternator with an AC Delco OEM unit, and it also started squealing within a year, until I discovered that a few squirts of WD-40 Specialist Water Resistant Silicone Lubricant on the bearings got rid of the squeal and swishing sounds for awhile - but be sure to avoid spraying the clutch on the AC compressor, alternator brushes, or belts. I hope this helps. Just a side note: If you still hear persistent swishing/grinding noises from the AC Compressor after lubricating the bearings, don’t hesitate to replace it, as they can easily seize-up. I had gotten so used to the bearing noises from my 1987 C4, and ignored them - then almost had an engine compartment fire. Luckily, I was alerted by another driver that my car was smoking a lot. When I pulled-over and popped the hood, I found that my compressor’s clutch was red hot. 😳
Nice video. I love my C5, but I still miss my C4. But yeah, it's a miserable feeling when you get done working on something and it won't start, and you know it's something you did. Glad you got it sorted out.
Hey Chriss take off the tensioner pulley and check the bearing, cleaned with WD40 and remove the stock Grease, then put bearing oil. For clean and remove the stock grease on the bearing you need an exacto knife or something sharp to open both sides of the bearing seals, is very ease. I had the same issue, after doing that, problem fixed.
I've never seen a ball bearing that was made to be oiled instead of greased unless it runs immersed in oil. Your oil will be running out of the bearing and it's going to go dry. The seals are designed to retain grease, not oil. Good luck with your method.
@@theflying70 Bearings can use both depending of the bearing type and size, but you are right this type of bearing need to be greased due to the high speed and temp operation. Hey that why we are corvette community right to help each other.
That is awesome, I was thinking the exact same thing while watching the digital dash. I wonder how much longer it would have taken the DeLorean to hit 88MPH
Good job diagnosing the C4. After I finished putting GM performance valve springs on my 02 Z06 I started her up and I could hear a loud ticking noise. I started to panic and shut off the car. After calmed down and started looking things over I noticed that I didn't tighten the tube that connects to the exhaust manifold enough. Tightened the bolts correctly problem solved.
Hi Chris, I'm Alessandro from Italy. I wanted to ask you if you could help me: my Corvette, when hot, struggles to get going.- Can you tell me what I have to look at specifically? Thank you very much-
Motor looks great. Was wondering if the hose where the leak was is original??? Looks to be swelled up/soft. Might consider replacing it and other hoses too.

Hello, I have a 1987 Corvette. 4+3 transmission. When I turn the car off sometimes the key won't turn back all the way to release the key. Very frustrating when I have to leave the key in the ignition sometimes. I believe there is a cable from the reverse gear to the steering column but I don't know how to adjust it properly. Any help would be appreciated, thank you..
Chris, I need some professional help, For the pass 2 months I have been trying to fix my 1989 C4 L98 TPI Corvette where someone did put water in my fuel tank. After I did a complete overhaul of the fuel system. Clean tank, New pump, Fuel filter, New injectors.. ect.. Got clean fuel to rails, good pressure.. OBD says code 12 12.. Put a test noid on and shows (NO INJECTOR PULSE).. I have voltage at fuses and on 1 side of the injector plug shows 12 Volts but nothing on pulse side of injectors.. Engine will run with starting fluid in intake but only cranks and no run.., I have now replaced the ICM in the distributor but the results is the same. I am out of options..I could really use your help with this issue? Thanks
sometimes on my c4 corvette 1992 i have trouble rotating the entire cylinder ignition lock and removing the key. I want to know if you ask me to help with this?
I just had issues with my c4 where it will crank and not catch like in the video. I removed my pcv valve and it turn on but idled roughly. Got a new one and still would not seem to catch. Am i missing something?
He might be testing some led bulbs. Leds in turn signal locations requires some planning on these cars. I have converted every bulb to led in my 85 C4 and I am working on a solution to prevent the indicator lights glowing with headlights on.
I have a c4 hasn’t started if a few years same issue. It just cranks but doesn’t want to turn over. The city says it needs to be in running condition so I need to get it up and running. I used some starting fluid into the manifold. It starts up but then turns right off. I was going to start by replacing all the spark plugs then checking the gas tank making sure the fuel isn’t old.
did you figure out the issue? i also have same issue it been sitting for years and replaced the fuel tank with fuel pump , i spray starting fluid and starts but then shuts off. I disconnected the fuel line from the fuel pump and with ignition on, it pumps fuel out, i also went to the fuel line that attaches to the fuel rail, disconnected it and sprays out fuel but no starts, so i assume fuel rail with new injector be the issue?
Something just don't add up in this vehicle. First a heat shield will not prevent starting. There were a few other things that were strange. I have worked on cars for over fifty years and I also have a 91 C 4. They all come with problems.
Selling mine 40k miles mint other than the black paint needs buffing Bc the white spots that might be able to buff out is killing me lol what a good price to sell
Chris, I may have a transmission rear seal leak in my 99 FRC. Can you tell me who you might recommend for a fix. Also due for a new clutch. Thanks. Rick.
Had my c4 for a week now and just a nightmare for wiring it ran for about a week on and off now got no power going to the fuel relay or pump unless I hot wire it and not got no power to the starter
AC Delco means absolutely nothing. A lot of their parts are now being made in good ole China. GM went to China for lots of parts since the early 2000's. Last brake rotors I bought that were AC Delco silver for my wife's car were made in China. I have a Delco throw out bearing sitting on the shelf in my garage that I bought in 04 and the package is labeled China.
I have a 1993 corvette. Starts and runs great until the engine gets warmed up 6 to 8 miles then check engine light comes on and the engine dies. Even dies while at speeds of 40mph or more. After sitting for 10 min starts right back up. Does anybody have any idea's? (Its not the opti spark or fuel pump).

If the harmonic balancer is going bad it will make the belt very noisy...

Change the fuel filter and the fuel pressure regulator. Those seem to be the 2 most common sources on this kind of issue.
Motor looks great. Was wondering if the hose where the leak was is original??? Looks to be swelled up/soft. Might consider replacing it and other hoses too.
Yes looks like it's ready to let go to me.
Sounds good even though you put Japanese spark plugs in it. Can't go wrong with

Most after market parts from O' Rally, Advance Auto and others are from Brazil and are cheap. Good to stick with OEM.
This one is from Canada.
I know why you went to 88mph lol. I know you actually touched 89 but the digital dash is just so 80s it reminds me of back to the future.
Lol, I didn’t even do that intentionally, but that’s funny!

If you are in the Phoenix, AZ area I would recommend Cordes Performance Racing, Bromley’s Corvettes, or Top Gear Motorsports.
How's your harmonic balancer on the c5? Been reading they go out causing problems.
Is your harmonic balancer going bad on the c5? Not sure if that could cause extra vibrations or belt wiggles that cause your pulleys to fail early?

Yes
How did that AC Delco tensioner work?
Nice job trouble shooting. You are the man. Good for you Chris.
lolz, what did I say about selling the C5 and keeping the C4? Tensioner creating tension :P
Still think when Matt loaned you the Z 06 you should have pulled out the C-4 pulled in the Z 06 and called it a day.
Some O'Reilly's parts are trash i had to replace my starter 3 times and just coughed up the cash for a powermaster
I'm sorry, you don't drive the C5 in the summer? Please explain.
Because it gets over 110 degrees F here. 1) the C5 AC doesn’t work. 2) the car doesn’t like the heat.
