I just loved how creepy all of Kirkwall was. Ferelden might awesome, but a story revolving a cursed city beyond hope is wonderful.

This set of Codices was my favorite from DA2. I always found Kirkwall a fascinating and immersive locale, and never quite understood people's hate for DA2 because of its smaller and more localized scope. For me, it felt more personal to have developed ties to each block, each district, each area that evolved and changed over the scope of the ten year period. Even the unique gangs at each corner felt like something I had a personal recollection or memory associated with. The Band of Three were like another set of friends I got to know through their letters and correspondence, and I hungrily searched for more with each discovery. I wish Bioware were able to reveal more about them, showcase more of their story perhaps...

Pretty sure Kirkwall was the place that Magisters used to rip open the Veil and enter the Golden City. What else would require so much effort and blood? And it would make sense that they would have needed enormous power that could be achieved oly through thousands of human sacrifices. After all, kinda the same happened with the Orb. It built up power for millenia to be opened and used to rip open the Veil.

JustMike I like This idea however. It said and take it as only an idea but they sacrificed slaves for centuries. So hundreds of years. The Magisters sidereal sounded like they were running out of time. Additionally how did they survive for 200 years before hand. Thinking about this problem is that maybe they found the key to eternal life before reaching the black city.

xsvrrx Avernus could extend his life so I imagine he wasn't the only one.

JustMike yes true but he had the blight. Via the joining. It has huge implications if they could do this. But its a good point.

And the impact on the mages of Kirkwall makes sense with that thought.

@@xsvrrx I mean they did talk directly to the Old Gods so I'd imagine they'd have some lifespan extending blight magic handy

This is most likely the story of the first attempts by the dreamers to develop the blood magic necessary to enter the fade. The entire city may have been designed to make blood magic as effective as possible, which could also make it even more alluring when in the city.

So...the Veil is spicy in Kirkwall?
Explains a lot. How many crazy maleficarum and power-mad templars did we fight there? WAY more than in Origins, and Origins took place across all of Ferelden.
This doesn't EXCUSE Anders, but it might explain a little more about why he and Justice/Vengeance went so off-the-wall berzonkers.
*sits back and waits for the Anders hate/apologists*

I mean that is fair, but also remember that the Relationship between the Templars and Mages were a lot more tense in Kirkwall than in Ferelden, while generally the Knight Commander and First Enchanter were moderates, and generally had a pretty functional working relationship all things considered. The mages weren’t nearly on as tight of a leash as we saw with Anders in Awakening where he escaped the Towers several time before we met him and mostly got off with a slap on the wrist.

Well Justice became Vengeance cause Anders had to much hatred for the templars

This, in my opinion, is the real story of Dragon Age 2 and it was honestly such a missed opportunity to not make this the real focus of the game.

i wonder if solas is aware of the significance of kirkwall(probably)
the missing elves rang alarm bells. what are the chances that they were saved by the dread wolf, as he built his secret base in the underground where the veil is thin

I love this one. It sounds like 1 of 2 things happened. The mageisters broke though the veil or this is where blood magic was first discovered.

This is probably my favourite set of codexes (codices?) in Dragon Age. The depth, the sneaking, the history, the *scale* of it has captivated me since the first time I read them.

First time I've ever heard of the Daefads. Another tribe??
World of Thedas vol. 2 further goes into the band of three, saying it was created by the Seekers of Truth. + trying to find out if the Forgotten Ones were connected to the Forbidden ones. Sadly they all perished :c

Honestly, I think this is the only mention of the Daefads. From context, it could be a tribe, but who knows!

Ahh okay, I was thinking maybe I had missed something about them. I wonder if we'll ever hear anything about them
Just realized what I typed about the band of three was in your description, d'oh >>

Sooooo interesting! When will you do another podcast for Split the Veil? Will you talk about little mysteries like this in it?

    • @GhilDirthalen
      @GhilDirthalen  7 лет назад +1

I talked a bit on this on my twitter recently! We try to do Split the veil episodes first Friday of the month, but this month our schedules just didn't line up, so, at this point, looks like it might have to be the 3rd Friday. For October, we had a spooky theme planned- but that's all I'll say for now~ Eventually we would like to hit stuff like this!

Oh, good to know! I am looking forward to the podcast. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to the discussions you've had with Exalted March. Really good stuff. I'll keep an eye out for the episode! :)
