It makes me sad when I see the concept art for Kirkwall and the surrounding area. What could've been even with only 1 extra year of development.
Even then if it had a proper development cycle and not just a year of development the entire game could’ve been so much more
Kirkwall is my favorite shithole.
I miss that damn city.
Same lol
It has that effect I'll admit. It's like it gives you this "Kirkwall is shithole! But is our shithole!"
It’s a lot like Gotham City and its neighboring city, Bludhaven.
Kirkwall is one of those places that much like those in our world that just doesn't seem to be able to progress because of past occupations, political turmoil, high crime rates, poor living conditions and poverty for a majority of citizens, and then you have other less relatable issues such as magical crimes. If only some small pound of wit and muscle got around to fixing that...
Kirkwall is the Dragon Age version of Gotham City and Bludhaven.
I am pretty sure 'the Battle of the Squealing Plains' is an affectionate shout out to the Klingon Empire's 'Great Tribble Hunt' where the Tribbles were hunted down to extinction - but after it was done even the Klingons realized what a ridiculous overreaction it was and so they don't talk about it/ are ashamed of it.
I theorized that perhaps the ritual the 5 Teveninter Magistratures used to physically enter the fade was probably performed in/around Kirkwall. It would have weakened the veil which would cause the mages within the city walls to be susceptible to possession, more so than anywhere else. However the Darkspawn didn’t drop onto the Free Marches so...
Tevinter Magisters?
I really enjoyed this video! Also, if I may, I kind of have a suggestion for a video. I’d love for you to make an ‘introduction to dragon age’ video so I could show my friends who haven’t played the games what they’re missing out on. Just a kind of quick explanation of the world with no spoilers. To me part of what makes the games so amazing is the rich world they’ve created for them yet whenever I try to explain it succinctly, I end up all over the place and confusing my friends. Your videos are so awesome and fun to watch, I’m sure if you had an introduction to dragon age it would be very helpful in converting people ;)
might be hard cause of what class you want to play as and what works best. an example I like mage and the first skill I get inquistion is magical barrage cause even though its stated as a storm power it works with your staff element so a fire staff it shoots fireballs a ice staff icicles its same with a lighting staff user-friendlyattack. if i want to play as a dalish i either go mage or archer cause the dalish are some of the best hunters in the lore and i want to stick close to the lore..
Dorian: went to Kirkwall once Varric: Yeah!?! Dorian: bit of a shithole Varric : yeeeeaahh
Wait, if the "Kirk" part of Kirkwall means "Black", does that make Blackwall...Ser Kirkwall? Yep, I'm going to be calling him that from now on.
I was about to comment on this too lmao
Ironically, the city is almost all marble or a similar white stone.
Finally watching this video some months later after its posted and the ending was just... wow you don't sugar-coat the fact that Kirkwall is a shithole do you? I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. That was a perfect ending. Bravo.
is there a video on what you meant by "there's something wrong about Kirkwall" and the stuff about abominations and crimes?
I love this channel ^-^
Mine is way better.
Theory:
Kirkwall is built upon or near the Ruins of "Dirthamen's favored City." Sundermount is as close to a non-secret "holy" place as we know for the elves, it is guarded by a Varterral that is magically bound and thus immortal (the first Varterral?) Even the Tevinter had some obsession with the area beyond simple commerce (the band of three discovering secret magical research, Dirthamen is the god of secrets)
Good stuff. Would love to see you do a companion video on the Band of Three reports.
Nice recap. I'm curious about the spoilers, though, at least the mysteries of the city and why there is such a high demonic presence in the city, and the whole "enigma" of the place. I guess much of it theorized in the game, but it's still tasty to hear and talk about. 😀
Dragon Age Keep site tells the story in summary, no need to talk to Varric in Inquisition unless you want more information.
I wonder if KirkWall was the location that the Magisters use to enter the Fade.
Unpopular opinion, but they should make a remake of Dragon Age 2. Keep the story, maybe fix some shortcommings, but give us better maps, improve Kirkwall up to the lore standards and make it a real city. Improve the playability and influence of some of the companion's stories (such as Fenris, who has one of the best arcs in the game but few figure out how to run it), etc. I think with that, it could become a great game. Maybe make Quentin have a bigger role... He's already a memorable bad guy (and causes more damage to the protagonist than most of the other villains in the series to boot) but maybe give him and his research and relationship with Orsino more time to shine. And add some more complexity, content, and dialogue revolving around the Mage/Templar tension. One of the more grounded stories in Dragon Age lore, and I love that about it.
I find the name "Sundermount" to be interesting. When I first saw the name, I thought that maybe this was where the Magisters Sidereal sundered the Veil (walked into the Black City). The first darkspawn exited in the Anderfels, right, but the Fade is always shifting...
Is there any lore that says where the Magisters walked into the Fade?
PS: This could also explain why the Veil is so thin in Kirkwall, leading to the increase in abominations & everything mentioned in the video.
Bonus pet theory: what they did with the bodies of the thousands of slaves that were killed to fuel the (blood) magic needed to sunder the Veil; they were put in what is now known as the "Bone Pit".
@@glennabuckley7106 It's been seen over and over that places where large amounts of blood has been spilled thins the veil in those areas for some time. The Tevinters killed hundreds to thousands per year they controlled the original city so they could use their blood for magic, and that would account for why the veil there is so thin. In short too much blood spilled over too long a time thinned the veil. Not sure if the veil ever heals from that damage either.
it's said that after the magisters fell from the fade as the first darkspawn they immediately fled underground--could be they roamed the deeproads for years before they started amassing more darkspawn and started the first blight
it is implied Kirkwall is a candidate. in the codex for the three Seekers it is implied (I believe) that the city might have been purposefully constructed in such a way as to maximize a blood magic ritual of massive scale.
plus the amount of slaves needed for the ritual makes the capital of slavery in the empire a good candidate.

Congrats on 5k
now I might be going mad but an item in dragon age inquisition called the Kitty collar tempory generates a shinning Reverent. lead me to wonder if my dalish knight-enchanter could become a reverent. now its lead me to the possibility that all dead knight enchanters could be possessed by a spirit and become reverants. now I know from all of the encounters with reverents they all tend to be at locations of battles and the ruins in the berciliuum forest from the first game also have many battles in them but also a spirit of an arcane knight (early version of this class,)
) in some kind of vile he teaches us the art letting all mages to wield and wear armours associated with them like shields and swords (before somehow mages stopped wearing it in future games) the juggernaut (though anyone can where it) one of the most powerful armour sets in the game are also carried by them and their four pieces of the armour so four had to be killed
one of the early mentions of these monsters comes page you get from killing your first. they bound in service to an archon of tevinter who on his death took his palace and all its knowledge and hid it. now we know knight-enchanters skills and powers come from the ancient elves and were picked up from by tevinter so what if this archon brought all of the ones that were dead and bound them to the spirits to them and his service.
they are also a unique undead unit to fight easily on almost on par with a pride demon and a knight-enchanter. it made wonder why there are not many of them and made me realize that knight-enchanter is not an easy skill to master in the lore
thank its just a theory but thanks for reading
That spelling is very bad. Could you develop it, but better this time?
Also are you saying REVENANTS and BRECILIAN FOREST? Knight-enchanter? You mean Arcane Warrior specilization from Magi?
:o I just had a thought. What if Fenris bands up with Solas! That would be an interesting match up!
I feel as though they would hate eachother XD
Doubt that. Solas loves magic.
May be a shithole, but damn if it isnt my favorite city in the DA world xD
Is Starkhaven next? Can it have spoilers since it has relatively same impacts in game?
And I just released my first DA2 build! What a cool coincidence !
What track are you using in the background at 1:30? I've been trying to find it
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I absolutely loved the story of dragon age 2. Too bad about the graphics though.
My problem is the repetitive retreading of overused environments in that game. The graphics were always pretty cool in my eyes. Never had visual glitches like my first playthrough of DAI. I will agree those first 2 games were behind the mass effect games that came out before them.
I live near the real world Kirkwall in Orkney. Our city is a lot nicer lol
Yikes, I sincirely hope Bioware gave you an official apology...
5k! & happy black history month
Did I hear that correctly? Kirkwall means black wall? Blackwall..? Hmm...
it was where black stone to help build minrathus and much of their work came from
Kirkwall... Kirk meaning Black.... They named the city Blackwall.
No Spoilers good one for a game that came out 7 years ago
I'm quite glad she does spoiler-free videos. I run a dragon age tabletop campaign and not all of my players have played all the games, so these spoiler free videos help me explain the lore without ruining any future playthroughs they might do
wait...if Kirk means black and the name basicly is "blackwall" ...WHAT ABOUT BLACKWALL YOU MEET IN INQUISITION!
(this is a sarcastic joke!)
Not sure if you’re just too close to the mic, but the sounds of saliva as you speak is very distracting.
A great video otherwise :)
